> The Doctor and her companions travel back in time to Montgomery Alabama in 1955, where they meet Rosa Parks, a legend of the US civil rights movement. But they’re up against an evil criminal called Krasko who’s determined to prevent the fight for equality.

>From TV & Satellite Week magazine:

> …when the Doctor detects a strange energy source coming from Montgomery’s bus depot, she realizes the might not be the only time travellers in town. A criminal called Krasko plans to stop the bus boycott, yet the cosmic racist has met his match in the Doctor and her friends. Inspired by Parks and determined to make his late grandmother proud, Ryan is willing to do whatever it takes in the fight for equality.

> …viewers will be shocked by the abuse Ryan is subjected to in the opening scenes.

I remember when Jodie was announced the consensus seemed to be "well at least Moffat isn't writing the first female Doctor" but fucking hell so far there's absolutely nothing notable or interesting about 13 other than the fact that she happens to be a woman now.

Compare TWWFTE to The Eleventh Hour and you can really see how incredible that episode is. Moffat manages to continue right where RTD left off and carry the weight of the past 5 years and still manage to be 100% accessable to new viewers. The concepts of the Doctor, regeneration, as well as the TARDIS/Time Travel are all explained for new viewers to understand without feeling heavy handed for returning viewers. We're introduced to Amy and Rory, introduced to the Cracks, and the Pandorica/"Silence Will Fall" are all established as the new arc for this series. Most importantly, it firmly establishes 11 as his own character, stepping out of the shadow of 10 in the eyes of the viewers and planting his feet right next to him. All this in under 60 minutes. Moffat took everything to its full potential in that episode.

The Woman Who Fell To Earth doesn't establish the Doctor as an alien time traveler. The new companions are just kinda along for the ride by means of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Doctor doesn't even invite them to travel with her in the TARDIS, nor do they express any desire to (how could they if they don't even know what it is). She's just like "alright bye" and only keeps them around because she fucked up her transporter thing. Fucking hell the episode doesn't even have the opening titles.

I know off the top of my head that Series 5 was shot on the Sony CineAlta (after Series 1-4 was shot on fucking betacams) and had issues with digital noise that they had to cover with artificial film grain for the blu-ray release (which for the most part looks pretty good) which is why 11's shirt pattern looks weird in certain scenes. Series 6 onwards were shot on Arri Alexa XT's which was a noticable improvement and increased the camera resolution from 1080p to 3.4K, although they definitely finished each episode in 2K. I read somewhere the other day that Series 11 has been shooting with the new Alexa LF which would mean that they're shooting in 4K, but I don't know how accurate that is.

Either way, Twice Upon a Time was just released on 4K UHD blu-ray (has anyone here watched that?) and considering they used the same Alexa cameras that they always used for that I can't see why Series 6-10 can't get a 4K blu-ray release. Most major blockbusters (aside from Star Wars) has 2K digital intermediates and are upscaled to 4K and it looks fine, so I don't see why Doctor Who wouldn't benefit from a similar release. If they upscaled Series 1-4 for blu-ray releases after shooting those on fucking betacams I think they can upscale from 2K to 4K.

Whithouse ofc has showrunner experience with Being Human and contributed to every Moffat-era series with the exception of Series 8 and also played the German soldier in Twice Upon a Time.

Whatever happened to Stephen Thompson? He was the 3rd writer with Moffat and Gatiss for Sherlock and wrote for Series 6/7/8 of DW but hasn't written for either show since 2014. Did he have a falling out with Moffat or something?

there was a 16 year gap before that point so it would have been moot either way. >Look, think of it like this. Eventually, there will be another TV series of Doctor Who. And it will fail horribly, because inevitably it'll be aimed at the kind of fan-targeted SF market that didn't even exist until Star Trek: The Next Generation came along and spoiled everything. Doctor Who only works as a family adventure series, but when it finally comes back you can bet any money you want it'll be like Babylon 5 or something. It'll only last one series, maybe two. So then the TV programme will be dead forever, the license will be in limbo, and nobody will ever want to pump more money into it as a TV concept. Not a live-action TV concept, anyway. But animation's just getting to the point where it's breaking through properly, especially now there's so many computer-generated effects around and people are starting to forget the difference between "real" film and CGI. Pretty soon, British animation companies… the Cosgrove-Halls of the twenty-first century… are going to realize that there's a massive amount of potential in a British Manga-style movement. We're the perfect country to do that kind of thing, to do the European equivalent of Akira or Ghost in the Shell or whatever. And I want to be there when it happens, and I can't think of a better spearhead for the whole thing than an anime version of Doctor Who. I'm thinking ten years into the future here, obviously.

<So if you got the chance to do this, would you tell the whole story of the Time Lord War as you see it?

>Well, epic wars are great for animation. Planets getting wiped out, million-strong armies of Cybermen marching across battlefields, Time Lord warships the size of moons… brilliant visuals.

We are excited to at last now be able to tell you that there is a major project in the pipeline to bring K9 back as the standalone hero that he deserves to be.

We have entered into a partnership with a major US/UK company and are currently now developing a new multi Million Dollar series/s which will establish the K9 "brand" prior to the release of the feature film.

A K9 film would have been a one off, but with now having a new series to investigate, (which will be set in Space akin to Guardians of The Galaxy etc) we will be establishing our own universe on a much grander scale than we could do before.

OMEGA will still play a part and we haven't dismissed the ideas of other characters such as The Axons, however we are very keen to establish new adversaries and alien creatures for K9 and his new associates to face.

The project will look to appeal to both new and old audiences and there will be more news in early 2019 so watch out on our social media.

Bob and Paul would like to thank #K9fans for their patience while the original plans developed into this far bigger opportunity. K9 will be back with you soon!

>AMY: Nothing. It's not one of those things you can fix like you fix your bowtie. Don't give me those big wet eyes, Raggedy Man. It's life. Just life. That thing that goes on when you're not there.

Dinosaurs:

>DOCTOR: So, dinosaur drop off time.

>RORY: Actually, we think home for us.

>DOCTOR: Oh. Fine. Of course.

>AMY: Not for ever, just a couple of months.

>DOCTOR: Right. Yes. I'm pretty busy anyway.

Mercy:

>DOCTOR: Okay, so, our next trip. Oh! You know all the monkeys and dogs they sent into space in the fifties and sixties? You will never guess what really happened to them.

>AMY: Could we leave it a while? Our friends are going to start noticing that we're aging faster than them.

Hopefully it signifies the same will happen in 2021, and Mathieson or, preferably, Harness will run the next era. Reading between the lines I really feel like Whithouse was being set up as the successor though, more than Chibnall, but presumably the failure of The Game (and BBC higher-up changes presumably meaning Whithouse fell out of favour a bit) and the massive success of Broadchurch shifted things. I could be completely wrong though, as Moffat indicated he did talk to Chibnall about it a fair while ago in terms of years.

But you're right to note there is still definitely a change in 11 and the Ponds' relationship after S6. The best way I can think of putting it is, if Manhattan had happened in S6 it would have been like the Doctor used the hold he had over Amy to drag her to a sad ending. After The Power of Three, Amy and Rory have both matured enough in their own lives that they make the decision to fly away again with the Doctor in no illusions about how it might turn out. This leads fittingly into Manhattan, where the Doctor is essentially useless and slowly regressing into a child while Amy and Rory make all the pivotal decisions of the story.

A forced miscarriage basically. That seems rather terrible. Plus Time Lords seem much more advanced that they would be a above little human concepts like having sex. It seems normal for us but rather primitive for the most highest and mightiest race in the universe.

You don't know what's primitive for the highest and mightiest race in the universe; maybe they think sex is the highest and mightiest thing there is! We just never see that, because this is a family show.

The Christian understands the madman because the madman sees the world for what it is, though perhaps his response is poorly calibrated: pregnant with meaning, inscrutable, rapturous, ecstatic. The Catholic is so enamored of the World, in fact, that he consumes the Word which entered it.

The secularist shares nothing with either because there is no meaning save pleasure, efficiency, preference. The only insanity is not to respond to one’s own appetites. The only perversity is worship.

To be frank, it’s boring. What an utterly uninteresting world to inhabit. All conversations about art are reduced to the enthusiastic exchange of platitudes, incommensurable because grounded in esoteric preference. Sex is a slightly mystical, erotic stand-in for eating a big cheeseburger. Health is good because it prolongs life and life is good because, well, nobody wants to die, right? (But life is only good if you were born to a family that wanted and could afford you, if you persist in a state of productivity and happy consumption. Remember this.) Environmentalism is the new religion. Save the world, save yourself by means of its various concrete practices, talk rapturously about the evils and goods of human behavior. Have pets, not children, because my God aren’t children obnoxious. And expensive! Couldn’t spend $25,000 renovating a van to drive around the Western states taking photographs of my aesthetically pleasing life if I had a child.

I am becoming more Nietzschean, I think, as a result of being surrounded by people who have read Nietzsche and misunderstood him. I long for someone truly mad because perhaps they will speak to me as a soul might speak to another.

Okay Im in the middle of watching the episode and its "alright" like it isnt making me angry or anything. I really dont mind that its a simple A to B sci fi story and its not like I wanna stop watching

but does anyone find the editing REALLY weird? Like there is a whole speech about the Doctor giving Ryan a pep talk to climb a ladder, and then we skip the actual climb completely. And when the ship crashes it cuts to the people on the ground falling back without a shot connecting it to the crash. And the Doctor creating the EMP blast felt super quick.

Also for some reason after the robots wanna cut off their air they decide to leave the tunnels 5 seconds later, like shouldnt the air in there still give them even half hour at least? Why go immediately into the dangerous night?

Also yeah, you guys (and androzani reviews) make me realise that the Doctor asks a LOT of questions and a lot get ignored. And Chibbs is using the Sonic even more than Moffat did which is an achievement.

Also, I realise that I actually dont like Ryan, he's a complete flatline most of the time, even as an exposition machine Yaz just has better reactions and acting in general. I like Graham too but Ryan is so far a dud.

I actually like the setup and the other characters though, I think Chibnall is good at worldbuilding, just not quite at executing/writing it.

>New Earth is abysmal

Agreed.

>and is worse than TWWFTE

I would contest this.

- New Earth had heart to it - although I didn't enjoy the interactions between 10 and Rose, their annoying-tourist-couple nature that would become prevalent throughout the series was immediately made clear.

- There were undeniably some moments that carried over for the show - take the Face of Boe. This is something Chibnall's clearly trying to do similarly with the Stenza and it's going to fail because there's nothing emotionally driving surrounding them as a concept, despite Grace's death which SHOULD have been the emotional drive.

- New Earth is actually aware of itself as a "fun", energetic and introductory episode. TWWFTE is aware of itself in all the wrong places: the meta-monologue on the crane (the opposite of which being the salad tosser).

- TWWFTE also lags behind because of what it was supposed to be, and never lived up to. Being the first episode of Doctor Who ever to primarily feature a female Doctor, everybody had higher expectations for this one than probably any ep since The Day of the Doctor.

DWE?

The shopkeeper in Germany does not fawn upon his customers. I accompanied an English lady once on a shopping excursion in Munich. She had been accustomed to shopping in London and New York, and she grumbled at everything the man showed her. It was not that she was really dissatisfied; this was her method. She explained that she could get most things cheaper and better elsewhere; not that she really thought she could, merely she held it good for the shopkeeper to say this. She told him that his stock lacked taste—she did not mean to be offensive; as I have explained, it was her method;—that there was no variety about it; that it was not up to date; that it was commonplace; that it looked as if it would not wear. He did not argue with her; he did not contradict her. He put the things back into their respective boxes, replaced the boxes on their respective shelves, walked into the little parlour behind the shop, and closed the door.

“Isn’t he ever coming back?” asked the lady, after a couple of minutes had elapsed.

Her tone did not imply a question, so much as an exclamation of mere impatience.

“I doubt it,” I replied.

“Why not?” she asked, much astonished.

“I expect,” I answered, “you have bored him. In all probability he is at this moment behind that door smoking a pipe and reading the paper.”

“What an extraordinary shopkeeper!” said my friend, as she gathered her parcels together and indignantly walked out.

“It is their way,” I explained. “There are the goods; if you want them, you can have them. If you do not want them, they would almost rather that you did not come and talk about them.”

On another occasion I listened in the smoke-room of a German hotel to a small Englishman telling a tale which, had I been in his place, I should have kept to myself.

“It doesn’t do,” said the little Englishman, “to try and beat a German down. They don’t seem to understand it. I saw a first edition of The Robbers in a shop in the Georg Platz. I went in and asked the price. It was a rum old chap behind the counter. He said: ‘Twenty-five marks,’ and went on reading. I told him I had seen a better copy only a few days before for twenty—one talks like that when one is bargaining; it is understood. He asked me ‘Where?’ I told him in a shop at Leipsig. He suggested my returning there and getting it; he did not seem to care whether I bought the book or whether I didn’t. I said:

“‘What’s the least you will take for it?’

“‘I have told you once,’ he answered; ‘twenty-five marks.’ He was an irritable old chap.

“I said: ‘It’s not worth it.’

“‘I never said it was, did I?’ he snapped.

“I said: ‘I’ll give you ten marks for it.’ I thought, maybe, he would end by taking twenty.

“He rose. I took it he was coming round the counter to get the book out. Instead, he came straight up to me. He was a biggish sort of man. He took me by the two shoulders, walked me out into the street, and closed the door behind me with a bang. I was never more surprised in all my life.

“Maybe the book was worth twenty-five marks,” I suggested.

“Of course it was,” he replied; “well worth it. But what a notion of business!”

Rewatching old Moffat episodes because I realised there's a few I don't really remember very well (and didn't appreciate fully back when I did watch them), and it just reinforces my disappointment in Chibnall's writing so far. He has new cast, new crew, and a bigger budget… and yet all we've had so far is dull scripts, dull characters, and wasted potential.
