The series finale is set in Belfast, and bombs are going off, british soldiers are gunning down irish kids. There's a plot twist at the end that it isn't set in the past, it's set in Northern Ireland after brexit leads to a customs border, and the ra destroy it, leading to peace being destroyed.

Like The Ghost Monument would be a story where 2 found this group of people that worshipped a powerful object that supposedly let them talk to the dead, but the Doctor doesn't believe in all that shit and he finds that it's some weird alien or some computer projections.

I really love subtle things like this, implying that tardises have evolved over time, because of course they have. But it's not done in a flashy way, it's not really drawn attention to, it just looks sleeker, thinner, shinier, and has different doors (In the name of the doctor clip, the door slides open, in Hell Bent the doors are hinged). There are different kinds of 'good writer'. And they are not all good for the same reason. If you criticize Chibnall for simplistic plots, forgettable dialogue, seemingly unoriginal concepts, you are ignoring the fact that his priorities as a writer (and possibly as a show-runner too) may be elsewhere. It would be like saying Moffat is a 'bad writer' because the worlds he writes are not believable, or the characters he writes don't feel like real people. Both avenues of criticism are fine, but it isn't necessarily the best basis on which to make qualitative statements. Some people prefer the whimsical to the grounded, and vice versa, but that doesn't make either objectively inappropriate or 'worse writing'.

So the next time you criticize Chibnall's episodes on their writing, try to do it on their own terms and understand what they are trying to achieve, rather than simply making an unfavorable comparison with Moffat.

For all we know, 13 just convinced him that it was the best way to fuck over the race host as payback for putting him through everything

 No.122372

Seeing so many criticisms that talk about weak plots is really surprising to me. Doctor Who has relied on Alien Invasion/Base Under Siege plots for so many years. Chibnall could easily have just regurgitated another one of those, but he tried two completely different scenarios instead.

In 55 years the show has only done one Space Race before, and that was in 1982. There might have been another Big Game Hunter Chasing Humans plot in the past, but I can't remember it off the top of my head. Both of those are almost completely unique ideas for this show, yet he's being criticized for poor plotting. It's boggling my mind. If he had done a by-the-numbers, Alien Invasion of Earth, would everyone really be happier? Why?

Of course not. We just wanted him to do something as high-concept as "Doctor shows Rose what the end of the world looks like" or "Doctor find the United Kingdom on top of a space whale, and has to figure out who is really in control" instead of "Two guys race for a prize".

Sure thing! As I recall, a few months before the premiere someone on Twitter managed to see/find out that the S11 premiere had a funeral with Graham making a speech, through some crossed wires or supposition they erroneously reported that the scene would be a flashback filling in Graham's backstory, and that the funeral would have been for Graham's (non-existent in the actual series, it seems) dead son. A fellow /who/re filled me and some others in on this and it was rather exciting in seeming to tread ground Chibnall was skilled at, as evidenced by Broadchurch, and one could imagine the Graham/Ryan relationship taking on a certain texture if that report had been correct. In the end, it seems it was all conflation and half-wrong reporting. Rather disappointing in the end and a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing, so to speak, but it did engender some S11 hype before it started. I felt sorry for Kinda in particular, who was really looking forward to that relationship dynamic.

Indeed, I wonder if it was someone genuinely getting things wrong or if they added the dead son element just to add some flavour to it. This is something I enjoy with following series in real time, all these elements leading up to the actual release which affect our opinions on what comes. I didn't get any of this for the DW series I didn't watch live, you know? Which is a good thing and bad thing, in a way it's more "pure" to just watch a series without all the background noise leading up to it, but on the other hand, that background noise arguably does constitute an important part of the experience, at least in context or in terms of how it plays to audiences (this is part of why I really like the Eruditorum and how it grounds everything through that mindset).

>>122517

I don't really know where to start; I've been organising/running a marathon of the totality of Torchwood here for months now and so I discuss TW at least 4 hours a week, I spent months collating the entirety of Torchwood into chronological order here https://fuckofferino.wiki/wiki/User_blog:NeoCLSTR/Torchwood_(Neo's_Archive), I kept watching Torchwood back in the day even after I dropped Doctor Who after the Series 3 finale, it's something I have so many opinions on it feels kind of floundering for me to encapsulate it briefly. I love RTD and I think it was a show that played to his strengths and philosophy a lot more than Doctor Who did. Torchwood is kind of the negative space of Doctor Who, as Gwen famously speaks to in the last episode of Children of Earth, it's a comment on the things Doctor Who and similar sort of platforms and narratives shy away from; it has the same element of being a portal into a nearby, more semiotically direct shadow world (the rift stuff, occasionally the fae stuff, and in general just the idea of transposing X-Files/Angels esque melodramatic American sci-fi narrative setting into Cardiff) but actively engages with the dirty corners of that. Torchwood cleaning up messes doesn't just feel like a vehicle for generating SF stories every week, it genuinely feels like them cleaning up the sorts of messes this genre would produce, seen particularly keenly in episodes like Adrift or the whole of Children of Earth or Small Worlds or even, sigh, in theory, Cyberwoman. It takes these genre elements seriously and follows them to logical conclusions while grounding it all in a very specific but eclectic aesthetic and setting. This is part of why the "Series 0B", of Torchwood throughout the 20th century, is so appealing, and why people here responded to it imo, because of how it reconfigures the familiar with the unfamiliar in ways that don't just feel like story fodder for the sake of story fodder, but actual interesting twists and lengthenings of the genre. This is all exemplified best in Jack himself, commented directly on in the text as being "wrong" in too logical a conclusion to a narrative ("I bring life"), too human, too long-lived. TW feels free to be existentialist and dark and nihilistic and actively confronting issues looming at the corner of these sorts of genres and their typical narratives without shying away and bathing them in the saccharine at the last minute, and that appeals hugely to me (and many others here I'm sure) as someone who's absorbed more of this genre than is comfortable. "Not one bit", "as a gift", "because it makes me happy", these moments aren't nullified later, they're left to stand on their own even as much as they repudiate so much of how audiences typically interact with these genres. Much can be said of how juvenile the show in particular could be at times, but TW is not a show that would ever bottom out its uncomfortable thematics a la Death in Heaven, or sidestep an uncomfortable foray into suicidality a la Twice Upon a Time. It is comfortable with how uncomfortable it is. And that's not even touching on how the actual promise of the brief eventually got met consistently with James Goss' stewardship of the audios, where he gripped onto the most interesting avenues of the premise (the screeching imperialism of the premise, the proximity to conspiracy narrative, horror as more the base to the stories than SF, the key to the whole series being that it is the space between other stories) and ran with them for good. Basically, Torchwood is a negative space in a genre I find overplayed, that explores issues I find fascinating in ways I find fulfilling in their commitment, and has a unique aesthetic and setting I find consistently fascinating and dynamic.

I'm reminded of watching 42 when I was about 9 or 10 years old and thinking it was the most boring Doctor Who I'd ever seen.

A while ago I made a copypasta of all Chibnall's lines that pissed me off the most; that could be completely replaced with S11 lines now, most of which have already been thoroughly lampooned by /who/.

"Tim Shaw" bathos was insulting, so was the crane speech.

When I heard the premise of Ghost Monument, I was hoping for something like Season 24, which I'm a fan of, but we basically got Season 24 played 100% straight, with Epzo basically acting as a cardboard cutout version of Pex. I wasn't even sure how much I was supposed to find Epzo funny.

Jodie is underserved, I'm not enjoying her performance so far; and Bradley Walsh's acting gives me Michael Craze flashbacks, the sort of performance that was occasionally charming in 1965 but doesn't cut the mustard today.

It's early days, but I feel like I'm living through a cosmically shit era of Doctor Who.

>Again, there are lots of mad speculative rumours that it is Harriet Jones inside the red dalek as the 'Mother of all daleks', not quite sure I give that much credibility. It is being referred to as the 'Supreme Dalek' and there are some interesting pics of it, Davros and a chained up Dalek Sec (from which it is alleged all the rest of the daleks have been cloned). >Thoughts on Rosa?

I want the episode to start with Rosa Parks's morning routine while Westminster Bridge plays in the background.

>Thoughts on the Stenza as arc villain?

I don't believe they'll go through with an Invasion of Time-style fakeout, I think it's for real, and I really do think "they [indirectly resulted in the death of] Grace!" is Chibnall's idea of a strong emotional hook. The fact that they're the only practical monster we've seen so far is telling. Also, the gathering coil was more frightening and evocative, the shot of it on the train was one of the only things I liked in Ep 1.

>Thoughts on how the general public is receiving the series?

Unsurprised, Chibnall's "and then, and then, and then" style storytelling appeals to the sort of people who wanted the Doctor to break out of the Confession Dial and then wreak out an epic vengeance on Gallifrey and then face Rassilon because he escaped and that's a loose end and then team up with Jenny from Series 4 because her not coming back is a plot hole, sort of people. My one irl friend who watches Doctor Who is hating it along with me though, so that's nice.

>>122813

"Proper" fiction is a loaded term, if you mean what separates it from fiction ostensibly for adults then it's mostly the simplicity of the prose and thematics. They are essentially children's stories stretched out to a length that feels affirming for a teenager, with a veneer of either worldbuilding/edgieness/topicality/romance/genre-flavour to give some kind of hook. They make sense as books for young adults and I don't really begrudge actual adults reading little else besides them (beyond feeling very sorry for them), but the posturing around them as if they really are comparable to adult fiction, let alone literary fiction, is silly. Luckily, it's nearly exclusively espoused by those who only read YA fiction, so all the points are terribly written anyway.

I hadn't thought of that but that makes sense for sure. I also think there's an element of second-opinion contrarianism there - "actually, it's smarter (and thus I am smarter) than it seems at first glance, for X reason only us smarties have worked out!". Though a lot of the time those headcanons are just people having fun, not genuinely trying to show off or take them seriously or anything.

>>122826

I actively despise the story largely for that reason. "You should always be kind/reach out/mend relations with family members no matter what despicable acts they do" is a legit harmful, dangerous thing to frame as admirable in a show millions of children watch.

 No.122828

Why is it called YA fiction if it's mostly read by teenagers rather than actual young adults? The same goes for "adult animation". The only shows in that genre that actually seem to skew towards adults are Archer and Bojack Horseman, neither of which are particularly good.

What did we learn about 13 in The Ghost Monument again?

As you come into this world, something else is also born. You begin your life, and it begins a journey towards you. It moves slowly, but it never stops. Wherever you go, whatever path you take, it will follow. Never faster, never slower, always coming. You will run. It will walk. You will rest. It will not. One day, you will linger in the same place too long. You will sit too still or sleep too deep, and when, too late, you rise to go, you will notice a second shadow next to yours. Your life will then be over.

Talking Angstrom and Epzo - the whole point of that meme (in my opinion) is that it's so bizarre to have a civil war over characters, the only detail you know about is their names. It's all set around that incredibly meaningless synopsis. So after the airing of actual episode the meta meaning kind of disappeared, making the meme unfunny. Personally I thought Susan Lynch was very nice as Angstrom and probably had a better character than Shaun Dooley. So there shouldn't be any shame over preferring Angrstrom over Epzo when meme died out
