It was slated for Boris Johnson to be PM but he got backstabbed by Davis at the last minute, the idea was that Theresa may would be unifying, she was a darling of brexiteers for a while since her Lancaster house speech parroted basically every major leave talking point but since then has failed to follow her own red lines, because of things such as the Irish border and the NI customs union (which are separate issues)

Theres only a few outcomes from now

>the tories JUST push through the current brexit deal, which brexiteers hate because it';s not really brexit, and remainers hate because it's called brexit. This can ONLY be done with labour votes, which is seen as a complete betrayal by many hardcore constitutional tories, passing things with opposition votes is very naughty to them.

>no deal happens because everyone keeps dragging their feet until the deadline, without a doubt will cause major division, shitty short term, probably pretty safe medium term and hard to tell long tem as it's based on whatever trade deal eventually gets made

>canada deal: seems like the only """"compromise"""", if done right would be the safest outcome but could also see the entire island of Ireland getting fucked raw.

Politics aside, i'm glad we can all get together in appreciation of Chibnallkino, the sunday night treat that keeps us all coming back for seconds. Seriously lads, we've got it so good, it's got corridors, it's got silly monsters, what more could you ask for? Doctor Who is the greatest idea anyone has ever had for a TV show, so just do that really. After three unbearable slog series of Crapoldie, three series of Doctor Cbeebies, and four series of pavement blowjobs and flying skeletons (lol) we are finally getting the vision of Doctor Who that the fans deserve. So I think we can all agree if we aren't too full on sunday night popcorn - thirds please!

Two episodes of aired of this show. Treating the entirety of Doctor Who is a legacy move that makes little sense actually in context. What meaningful connection does this show have with the three years, or the four before that, or the four before that? Or the show as it was in 1985? Or 1972? Or 1968? Treating Doctor Who as some cohesive umbrella programme that everyone should feel unwavering brand loyalty to because they enjoyed some iterations of it is woeful consumerism at best.

It's for the best and the key reason the show can even exist this long; that it isn't all the same show but many shows riffing on roughly the same premise/title character. The thought of someone genuinely being able to watch every episode of Classic Who and New Who and genuinely love the totality of them all is alarming, imo. Hartnell's era alone is not the same thing when it ended as when it started, acting like people owe some kind of love to Jodie's era already because of the half century of different shows preceding it is certainly the kind of character fetishism and brand loyalty I bet Chibnall would like to engender but not really something conductive to anything else.

GRAHAM: I know. Well, three suns in the sky are a bit of a giveaway.

RYAN: It’s another spaceship!

GRAHAM: Another spaceship about to crash land.

GRAHAM: That’s an old police box.

YASMIN: Yeah, like the one on Surrey Street. Only the one in town’s green.

EPZO: You don’t get to take charge here. This is about me and her fighting to win.

DOCTOR: Where are those people now? Why are there so few signs of life? What happened to everyone?

DOCTOR: Those suns are starting to set. They’re moving way faster than I realised.

GRAHAM: Doctor? Scorch marks all along the walls.

DOCTOR: Inscriptions on the floor.

GRAHAM: What is it, some sort of cave painting?

Jodie said: “I am 36 and I have a bit of a career but I have a lot to go as well and if there is any advice I could give anyone in this climate it is ‘don’t be an a***hole".

“Chris Chibnall gave me this extraordinary role of Beth Latimer in Broadchurch, which was a wonderful series to be part of, and it was five years of my life".

“Now had I been an absolute kn**head on that job, rude to people, not a team player and not an ensemble member, my life would not have been the same because Chris would never have wanted to work with me again".

Straight-talking Jodie, from Skelmanthorpe, near Huddersfield, West Yorks, said: “I swear a lot and so the pressure is not dropping my natural vocabulary into every interview and realising I am going to be kicked out.”

I don’t really have much grounding to moan about Whittaker when she really is being given near-nothing to work with – just consider, for a moment, how many nuances Twelve, Eleven, and Nine had by their respective second episodes, versus how inert Thirteen’s character still is as of Monument – but I’d be lying if I said she’s doing much to rescue the scripts with interesting and imaginative choices. The general lack of vision as to who Thirteen is, what Doctor Who is, and what a story is seems to have permeated through to the actors.

 No.123867

>>123862

She can't help that the scripts are giving her next to nothing to work with but goddammit she is an ACTOR, it is her job to transcend that. Plenty of Doctor actors have brute forced their way through thin scripts to deliver some kind of interesting performance, hell, near the entirety of Nightmare in Silver's final plot was Gaiman giving up and just trusting Matt to go insane. Maybe it's unfair of me to keep coming back to The End of the World/The Beast Below/Into the Dalek and all the ways the Doctor actors had begun modulating and stretching their performances there, as those scripts actually were giving them plenty to go on, but then I think of all the endless Doctor Who scripts with nothing to go on that plenty Doctor actors still managed to push interesting performances through, and I verge. Jodie doesn't deserve to be patronised, she is a good actress and should know what she's doing, that's precisely why I'm disappointmed in her performance, and I hate what I suspect is a slightly performative overcongratulation of her around the media and whatnot, though I understand it's probably necessary in a sense given the radical nature of her casting at all. But one can't help but start to think of other British actresses that wouldn't have still been stalling two episodes in…

>>123865

It's particularly frustrating to me because her performance in Broadchurch was one of my favourites of that series. This conflation in Doctor Who between both her and Chibnall underserving us is really disappointing.

This week is the first test to see what Doctor Who looks like under the new normal, when not written by someone we already know to be a hack fraud

Perhaps jodie will finally get some material to work with

Perhaps any of them will, frankly. Ryan and Yas having to react to being the victim of extreme prejudice should be a good chance for them to show off what they're capable of as actors.

That's being far too specific. It doesn't have to be law to be a barrier–it can just be unexamined attitudes and informal distaste for seeing non-white people, plus structural biases (people hire people most like them or that they know well, so white people hire more white people, even if they have no specific dislike for black people)

The sentiment of society being improved by people standing up to racism everywhere is valid, but yas did make a specific claim.

The UK doesn't have the same history of relentless discrimination that the US does. It's certainly true that people had (and have) personal racist attitudes and biases independent of the law which come into effect when hiring people, but historical documents do show cases of POC in positions of authority in the UK over 200 years ago. Yas used the absolute "can be" rather than "more likely to be", which is more accurate given that the theoretical possibility always existed, but chances for her have increased over time as biases have decreased.

It's semantics, but it still results in a statement that misrepresents the situation.

I’m also proud of a line – I’m very rarely proud of anything I write – but I’m proud of the line ‘Do you think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?’ because I got obsessed when I started to write this that Cybermen have no emotion, so it starts with Clara unable to find a way to say I love you and ends with Danny unable to find a way to say I love you, there are two phone calls that book-end it, and in the middle, the cracked old Caledonian gets it exactly right, he says I love you perfectly. […]

>He’s surprised he has to say it. That’s the truth about him, he says lots of horrible things all the time, that’s because he assumes all the other stuff is taken for granted and it’s only in that moment Clara realises just how much he’s assuming is taken for granted, absolute monomaniacal devotion to her. One of them is an american who saw series 1 without any knowledge that the show had existed before then and loves RTD, another is a scottish woman who grew up with late 70s/80s who, and prefers Moffat. There's a few others I remember less, but they all have varying opinions on the show. So happy Christmas

I don't even think it's as far as that Moff's era/s were too complicated, I think it's something darker than that. Like gig put it,:

>How does this connect to the BBC’s desire to boost the popularity of the program? Easy. Moffat made the fatal mistake of wanting his viewers to engage closely with the content of the show; the problem with that is, if a viewer does so, they might decide they hate it (and if they don’t engage, they’ll be lost and hate it anyway). Chibnall Who has hit upon a foolproof remedy: make a show that the viewer can understand without following it. It is near-impossible for a show like this to offend or frustrate its intended audience. They can’t part ways with it, because it hasn’t asked them for any commitment to begin with.

>This phantom Doctor Who has its own, peculiar, oppressive power. If the content becomes largely irrelevant, then the act of “watching” the show becomes a ritual without a clear purpose beyond its own perpetuation. The BBC want people tweeting along during the episode, performing the affirmation and boosting its online presence, instead of having any direct confrontation with it – awareness fading in and out not unlike the Ghost Monument itself, keeping their experience of Doctor Who just abstract enough so that the séance can continue, en masse, all over the country and indeed the world.

>As for the contents of that forgotten, neglected screen? The things that, unlike the big locked door, made it to transmission? All of the creative potential and hard work put into producing that sorry rectangle of disposable content has been like a fire, raging away inside a concealed furnace, powering a vast engine so that it might grind on and on, and keep forcing out blackened slabs of a lifeless – haunted – end product.

Reminds me a little bit of the VNA Head Games, which features the TV Comic version of 'Dr. Who' trying to assassin Queen Elizabeth (the second) because he mistakes her for a tyrannical leader of planet Eath. It's a parody of those TV Comic strips where the Doctor would arrive on some alien planet where the people are oppressed by some dictator, fucking kill the leader, and liberate their society in the space of 24 hours, because systemic problems are too complicated for TV Comic's prepubescent audience. That was a GOAT book.

Also, the book revealed that Mel left because the Doctor hypnotised her and made her leave. No, really. Honestly, can't say I blame him desu.

I won't spoil it here, but I'll just say it's something between third and first person narration, and there's an in-universe reason it's told that way, that could only be done in a Land of Fiction novel.

>New showrunner, Chris Chibnall wrote the episode and it was directed by Jennifer Perrott.

>Episode six, entitled Demons Of The Punjab, will see Jodie’s Doctor, Yaz (Mandip Gill), Graham (Bradley Walsh) and Ryan (Tosin Cole) travel to the Indian state of Punjab in 1947.

>The Doctor will quickly discover the demons are haunting the land and it’s up to her to find out who they are and what they want.

>This episode was written by Shane Zaza and directed by Jamie Childs.

Oh, one thing I almost forgot to mention though, the first few chapters of Head Games are some plot on the planet Detrios along with some aimless plotless wanderings through various fictional landscapes, and is pretty dull, but the book soon picks up and becomes very enjoyable indeed, featuring a complex examination of the simplistic 'good guys V bad guys' of the TV Comic stories Vs the complex moral ambiguity of the VNAs, the return of the Valeyard, a cameo by Sixie, Dinosaurs, literally every novel or TV companion of the Seventh Doctor returning - even the one-episode ones, and basically so many elements that any less GOAT book would get muddled and confusing, but Head Games manages to expertly juggle all its characters and plots.

But if you didn't catch the TARDIS at the right moment, it would completely phase out for several centuries. Thirteen lost hope because she thought she missed the window of opportunity.

As a side note, I like how bluntly 13 says "We'll die within one solar rotation." There's a touch of Twelve still in her.

I don't mean jerking off, I mean literally just rubbing their own chest. For 10 minutes. There's one scene where that happens on a bed and another where it happens in the shower, possibly more than one. I can't remember if it was multiple or it just went on for so long that it felt like multiple.

 No.124381

I suspect that Whithouse will find himself getting lower in the priority list of finding Doctor Who writers in future. That depends on how well Jamie Mathieson's second story turns out – Flatline was marvellously inventive, and next week is going to be something of a comedy as well. As well, it's a co-authored script, which could mean that Moffat is taking Mathieson under his wing in a way that he isn't with Whithouse. Whithouse is a more established television writer, and after several years of working with his scripts, the Moff would be well aware of his limitations.

I also have high hopes for Peter Harness' Zygon two-parter, and Catherine Tregenna's episode, the sequel to Mathieson's story, will likely be her first of many Doctor Who stories. Sarah Dollard seems to be an example of finding a writer better than Whithouse through Whithouse's networks, as she wrote a knockout late-period episode of Being Human and an episode of his The Game.

Doctor Who has always been a show that struggles to find its best writers. It's plain difficult to write for this show, generally speaking. So you sometimes have to hang on to the folks who are solid enough at stringing a story together, give them a less-prominent spot in the season, and let the bright talents shine brighter in comparison.

And with so much of 1's and 2's eras lost and my distaste for reconstructions, I've sorta relegated myself to just reading the novelizations of missing stories. Haven't gotten around to that very much yet.

Six, on the other hand… I like a lot of his mannerisms and his prickliness, but so much of it was done better with Capaldi and Eccleston and the actual stories he was in are some of the most intolerable shit I've ever watched.
