>See how they play with her. See how they toy. They want her to run. They need her to run. Do you feel their need, Doctor? Their blood is screaming kill, kill, kill! Hunter and prey, held in the ecstasy of crisis. Is this not life at its purest? Compassion, Doctor. It has always been your greatest indulgence. Let this be my final victory. >Genocide in a moment. Such slaughter, not in self-defence. Not as a simple act of war. Genocide as a choice. Are you ready, Doctor? So many backs with a single knife. Are you ready to be a god? Why do you hesitate? No one would know. Clara Oswald is dead. Is this the conscience of the Doctor, or his shame? The shame that brought you here.

>Finally, a big feast of lives. Yes, squeeze the life from all of you. You can't save them. We smell your fear too. The strongest of all. A dozen lives? We'll take you first. You lead but you're scared, too, for yourself and for others. Afraid of your own newness. We see deeper, though, further back. The Timeless Child. She doesn't know. We see what's hidden even from yourself, the outcast, abandoned and unknown. Now we crush those fears from you.

 No.124721

Doctor Who star Matt Smith has been officially banned from dating his companions.

Show boss Steven Moffatt, 50, held talks with Matt, to warn him off starting a romance with Karen Gillan.

But the details were supposed to stay private until Matt blurted them out at a fans screening of new episode Asylum Of The Daleks on Tuesday night.

Asked if he had ever “got it on” with Karen Gillan, who plays companion Amy Pond, Matt said: “Absolutely not, we’re professionals and that was another conversation I had with Steven.

“Oops, I can’t say anymore about that. But she finds me repulsive in that way anyway.”

As laughter filled London’s BFI cinema, show boss Steven Moffat added: “Matt, I think I may have started that talk with ‘Strictly between you and I’ .

"But it seems that was with unfounded optimism.”

Speaking to the Mirror afterwards, Moffat admitted it was an “embarassing” thing to come out but suggested it was more of like a ‘father and son’ conversation rather than a ruling.

Moffat has not repeated his talk again with new actress Jenna-Louise Coleman, who will replace Karen Gillan as Matt’s companion at Christmas.

* The new series of Doctor Who starts with Asylum Of The Daleks on BBC1 at the end of the month.

The War raged, but for most species in the universe, life continued as normal. The War was fought in the Vortex, and beyond that, in the Ultimate Void, beyond the eyes and ears of ordinary creatures. The Lesser Species lived in ignorance. If a planet found its history subtle changing – perhaps distorting and rewriting itself under the pressures of the rupturing Vortex – then its people were part of that change, and perceived nothing to be wrong. Only the Higher Species – those further up the evolutionary ladder – saw what was happening. - RTD, 2006 annual

the showrunner did have control, because he already changed the monster from what it was originally. It was originally a godzilla like creature that absorbed everything in it's path the showrunner, Russell T Davies, chose to write the character this way, to cast Peter Kay, he approved the design, he wrote all the dialogue. I have zero issues with how the creature was created by that kid actually. Giant creature that absorbs whole buildings is pretty cool

You know, there were jokes about Chibnall making every episode mediocre, but I actually found the first 2 episodes actively bad. This one was just bland. Once you ignore the political message, it's a fairly simple episode, with not a huge amount of personality from the characters, but much more than last week at the same time. If you don't ignore the political message, it's slightly preachy yet doesn't actually explore any ideas that well. There was no interesting take on segregation, the civil rights movement, what it was like to live there….. Exactly what I expected from Chibnall, and yet much better than the last 2 episodes. Probably says more about the last 2. This one was okay

>I loved the scene. The acting is extraordinary and that is what I think has powered this series. I’m also proud of a line – I’m very rarely proud of anything I write – but I’m proud of the line ‘Do you think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?’ because I got obsessed when I started to write this that Cybermen have no emotion, so it starts with Clara unable to find a way to say I love you and ends with Danny unable to find a way to say I love you, there are two phone calls that book-end it, and in the middle, the cracked old Caledonian gets it exactly right, he says I love you perfectly. […]

>He’s surprised he has to say it. That’s the truth about him, he says lots of horrible things all the time, that’s because he assumes all the other stuff is taken for granted and it’s only in that moment Clara realises just how much he’s assuming is taken for granted, absolute monomaniacal devotion to her. He absolutely loves her.

God that was so fucking bad. I hope to God there are normies watching this at home and realizing what drivel they just watched, otherwise I legitimately question their mental capacities.

First and foremost: this was not an episode of Doctor Who.

This was an episode of a historical drama aimed at portraying the 'struggle' of black people during the 1950s with a title card that said "Doctor Who" at the start and featured a barebones plot between a character called The Doctor and a fugitive from another world. I don't care what anyone tells me otherwise, this script was written primarily to promote and highlight Rosa Parks and the Civil Right Movements. The alien plot was abysmal. It's as if the writers thought: "what's the most basic alien plot we can tack onto this episode that has no consequence on any of its events?" and then wrote this crap.

Has anyone noticed that all of Yaz's characterization just comes from her telling Ryan "remember when x happened in y"?

Has anyone noticed how Ryan's characterization is just him mourning about what his Grandmother would have done? I honestly feel like the Grandma gets more character development than any of the companions and she died 2 fucking episodes ago!

Has anyone noticed that The Doctor's conflicts are always solved by something she's had to do nothing to achieve and yet she acts so braggingly and smug about everything?

Has anyone noticed how boring the camera work is? 80% of the shots are just the top half of a character, or their face or body, towards one side of the screen. Those shots where the camera pans down and everyone is standing in a diamond formation like the fucking Power Rangers are cringe inducing.

Has anybody noticed how there's no action? Every single scene is just all the character's standing still or slowly walking.

Has anyone noticed that Mandeep Gill is the only one of the main crew who can actually act beyond one emotive range, and even then she's above average at best?

Honestly it's a 0/10 for me. This series has gone to dogshit.

The Invention of Death is GOAT.

>no real villain

>genuinely interesting SF concept the whole story revolves around

>explores original alien society in detail and with great consideration to societal differences

>extremely comfy moments (Ian/Barbara chemistry, 1/Ian/Barbara/Susan campfire singalong)

>resists doing continuity references that would have been extremely easy to indulge in

>capitalising on Ian and Barbara's jobs in ways to evolve the story

>entire story is interconnected, the climax/twist a natural evolution of the worldbuilding

>1 in full experimenter/inventor mode

>doesn't shy away from sex

>very memorable premise all round

The 1DAs are interesting because they're like an AU take on starting Doctor Who, not just an emulation of Hartnell era. Going more alt-universe is more interesting and has more creative longevity as there comes a time where basically everything BF can mine from an actual era is mined.

>None of these actors [in the 1DAs] are doing impersonations of the original actors. What they're doing is playing these parts as written. And, you know, we've written them - our brilliant writers, you know, Matt Fitton [sic], John Dorney, and, uh, Andrew Smith, and, uhm, Guy Adams - sorry Guy, how could I forget you, I'm just old and forgetful…uhm, they've written these greats scripts that the style, very much in the style of the First Doctor Adventures, and the cast are coming to it, ah, and playing the parts as written. Written in that very faithful way. So, you know, you're not going to listen to it and think 'Goodness me, I thought that was William Hartnell' - no, you'll hear someone playing the First Doctor character, uh, s-perhaps a slightly different i-interpretation. And with all the other characters as well! I think there will be moments when you think 'Oh yes, yes, this is exac-I recognise that', but this is the sort of new way of looking at it. We just thought it'd be fun and exciting thing. We've been trying to do it for ages but, as it gets mentioned in interviews coming up in future podcasts, David Bradley is so busy, really, uh-th-so we were trying to do these even before, uhm, the Christmas special was mooted. Was, you know, just a coincidence! When they t-, when the BBC finally said 'ooh, and David Bradley is gonna be in the Christmas special, tis top secret', we said 'Oh? You're g-oh! We were already going to do something like that', but anyway, it all worked out very nicely.

>Briggs: "What's fascinating about the cast and their performances is that they're not impersonating William Hartnell and his TARDIS crew. They're playing those parts as written in the scripts. No one can replace the brilliance of those original performances. What we're presenting here is a kind of reinvention of that era, completely in the spirit of the original. They are new but entirely faithful interpretations of these characters."

Why did they have to do the Rosa planning scene in a dirty racist apartment? Couldn't they just check all that shit up in the TARDIS?

I know it's because they needed that one tense scene with the cop, but still.

After destroying the guy's briefcase and his vortex manipulator (fucking LOL), why didn't the Doctor and crew not just like, tie up the guy to a post or something? Maybe lock him inside the TARDIS? Maybe my mind is fuzzy after a couple of drinks, but how/why was he let go again?

Why did Chibnall think the last scene, where everyone stares at a rock in space, would be like, good?

Oh, and can we all expect all secondary characters to return in the finale? Especially given how quickly they just teleport off the story?

I'm pretty sure the Epzo/Angstrom duo, Krasko and Tim Shaw will teleport in the finale for whatever reason.

Rosa was always going to be bad because civil rights is too dour a topic to make for a good episode of Doctor Who. Doctor Who has had plenty of historicals set in unpleasant times that didn't directly address injustice because it's just not entertaining. What were they even thinking?

Funny how much white people are liking an episode ostensibly about Rosa Parks that quite literally foregrounds the holy suffering of white people in their truly impressive maintenance status of the quo in staying quiet as implicit racists. That really is the most sensible note to play in the climax of an episode of "Rosa". It makes all the sense in the world for people to be identifying with Bradley Walsh's character the most in that sequence. Fantastic work Chibnall. Truly, in times as dark as these, we need a pillar of hope as white as this.
