I think it's probably likely he got bored, and I always admired his commitment although deeply questioned his compulsion. Sometimes I think I "feel" like he's around sometimes, (like on 4 chan, someone made a carry on post in a DW thread the other day) but surely he's moved on to greener pastures. Hm interesting. Is it just going to be about the Prometheus, or are they doing other ships too? They surely won't touch any iteration of the enterprise. I don't think they could afford Shatner and half his crew is dead and Stewart is otherwise engaged with the franchise again. Peter David did a line of EU books about a "non-human" captain featuring Cmdr Shelby from TNG's borg episodes that was actually pretty great if you're into that sort of thing. I haven't actually read anything about the Prometheus and the only thing I know about it is it was captained by a hologram Andy Dick. If they go that route those legendary Big finish lunches are going to get a whole lot more interesting with Dick around.

I don't know anything about it other than it's happening. There's apparently an animated show from one of the minds of rick and morty which if stewart's involved in I may legitimately have a melt down. That's entirely possible since Stewart's getting up there in age. There's also the starfleet academy show that they've been talking about doing since TNG which I think is probably likely too. Him being the dean or what have you. He won't be a captain, so whatever it is he's probably going to be in of an administrative capacity whatever the show is if it's live action.

>starfleet academy will be SHITE. what a boring idea. pissed off that they're wasting time and money on it.

Oh I completely agree. I trashed my room when I read in like fucking starlog (i think) back in 96 or whatever when the postulated that the wesley episode at the academy with the grouchy grounds keeper was a soft pilot or a testing of the waters for a spin off. You just know that they're looking for the riverdale audience, and with Sabrina's popularity and it's comparisons to riverdale it's almost inevitable that it's going to happen and I'll very reluctantly watch it.

My concern is stewart is been kinda focused on comedy for a good long while now. I can see him jumping on an animated comedy with a silly captain picard that's too old to give fucks anymore and that kinda sounds good on paper but I can't see it getting tedious after about 6 episodes. I hope it's live action and I hope it's as good as STD (which as flawed as it is, it's a strong first season for ST), but I have my doubts.

Just endless parades of continuity wank with no mind paid to story or context or meaning or any fucking thing, just more more more more more more more more more more as if Doctor Who is some inherent good they are so blessed to make and we are so blessed to receive. Big Finish is essentially ten or so middle-aged white British men churning out the same stories with the same characters from the same perspectives forevermore. Whenever they do chance upon a good idea they run it into the ground as quickly as they can and cross pollinate it with all their other shit to advertise more and more and more and more and more and more. They do not tell good stories. They do not break new ground. All they do is produce. They are just an endless stream of mad libs for Doctors and villains.

BF plan out a 16 story boxset series in advance advertising it on the basis of being a big interconnected story with a beginning, middle, and ending. This is Doom Coalition. It doesn't have an ending, just a cliffhanger, so the next 16 story boxset series (Ravenous) continues the same story, with the two worst companions humanly possible to write. There's an evil Time Lord the Doctor sometimes fights. There are evil space tentacle clown things Tme Lords are scared of. Churchill works with some Polish pilots. Everyone complains a lot. Nothing really happens, and we know none of it matters because we see the main characters (8, the villain) in the Time War boxsets already so we know nothing changes. It's just a lot of noise.

 No.135162

>>135150

I think it's a good example of the Doctor starting to form into a more interesting character. Before this he's just sort of been pottering about and getting into scrapes but all of a sudden he finds himself out of his relatively shallow depth. He's met the Daleks before, and each time they've been dispatched fairly easy but this is the first time where they've had a large enough force to seriously conquer everything or anything they wish to. A normal story would have him do something clever to wipe them out or carve a sizeable chunk out of them but the Daleks have The Time Destructor to fall back on so it raises the stakes from a "6 part romp around the galaxy and back in time for tea" to a "we have to stop them before they kill and conquer literally everything."

TDM also goes the step further to prove that companions can be at risk of death. Up until that point the worst that happens to anyone on Team TARDIS is (and this proves my knowledge of the Hartnell era) radiation poisoning on Skaro, and all of a sudden you're given scope with a brand new companion getting killed just out of the starting gates. Katarina isn't especially an interesting character or companion but she acts as a vessel to demonstrate the larger stakes at hand and disprove companion infallability. AFAIK Katarina's fate wasn't explicitly written for Katarina as Terry Nation wasn't even aware that she was a thing until it was time to film - the death was originally meant to be for Vicki, but after she left in The Myth Makers they bumped Adrienne Hill off instead. If it had been Vicki I think the dramatic effect would have been a lot stronger.

Is TDM the best Dalek story? Not at all. Did I enjoy it for what it was? Absolutely.

4K. I'm curious if they'll release Series 5-10 on 4K blu-ray as well since from Series 6-onwards they filmed with Arri Alexa's and mastered each episode in 2K, and Twice Upon a Time was no different. Upscaling from 2K to 4K has proven to be successful since most mainstream movies with CGI have 2K DI's (the only exception being the new Star Wars films, which have 4K DI's) and no one can tell the difference really. Series 5 was filmed in 1080p *I think* but if they were able to upscale Series 1-4 for blu-ray then I can't see why Series 5 would be any different since the difference in quality between SD and HD is a bigger jump than HD to 4K

blu-ray discs more space than DVDs, which means less compression for the video and audio. So even if it's still in 480p, the quality is going to be better on a larger disc. It's like listening to a song on youtube in 128kbps compared to a 320kpbs (or maybe 256kbps I'm not sure) download from iTunes. And Series 6 had Rolling in the Deep in Episode 1 and that Muse song when they were in the TARDIS at the beginning of the flesh two-parter.

Englishman in New York playing in Angels Take Manhattan was a great needle-drop on Moffat's part. Damn now I wish Sting could've played the War Doctor, he's the only musician/actor aside from Bowie who could've been great. John Hurt was god-tier though so its okay

if you take out Danny then Series 8 becomes perfect for me. It's like Moffat couldn't decide what to do with his character, he doesn't give him enough to do where he eventually comes a companion like Mickey and Rory since Moffat was planning on killing him off at the end of the series and didn't want people to get too attached? but at the same time he's still in the episodes to have enough of a presence where his death has some impact. The end result is that he just kinda feels neither here nor there and when it feels like he only exists to annoy Clara by calling her while she's on adventures or by driving a wedge between her and the Doctor, he loses all likeability. Even after he dies, he's the worst part of the finale

I maintain that Danny would have been potentially VERY based if he'd been better cast. Anyone with even a bit of chemistry with Jenna, or who could put up a compelling enough performance to be worth watching even when he's just bugging Clara, would have been able to sell it. And Danny goes on an absolutely huge journey in the final two episodes, the likes of which don't exist anywhere else in NuWho, but nobody appreciates it because Anderson undersells it at almost every step.

The man fucking meets the child he murdered in a war, then has to let his girlfriend abandon him in a horrible afterlife to stop her killing herself, then he's a zombie Cyberman who can still feel pain, all of it is fucking insane. Frankly even a good actor would be stretched by this.

 No.135425

Orson was the only time Danny was likeable because he wasn't being a fucking bitch to Clara or the Doctor (or both). Eleven bursts out of a cake at Rory's stag party to tell him in front of everyone that he and Amy kissed and Rory still gets over it and becomes friends with 11, and the result is that Rory ends up being by far the most likeable of the 3 by the end of their run.

Or Mickey when it came to Ten and Rose. Dude was making jokes about Ten/Rose being a thing in School Reunion ("the missus and the ex meeting each other" when Rose and Sarah Jane are talking) and Mickey is based in Series 2. He's alright in Series 1 to begin with but his likeability shoots way up when he's not dragging Rose or the Doctor down and is just along for the ride.
