has anyone else been watching holby city? mcgann plays a great villain. the show's writing isn't always great, but his character is, and watching his slow descent into madness has been pretty interesting. it's a shame that his time on the show's coming to an end, i've actually been really enjoying it. but there was only so long they could go on without other characters finding out about the murders

also yea this isn't doctor who but it's a show about doctors saving people, and it stars mcgann, so it basically is

None of them are "important" because Classic Who is a serialised/anthology show with little regard to continuity and limited contact between writers of individual episodes, but you should watch the animated episodes, specifically The Tenth Planet and Power of the Daleks since they are the final and first episodes of Doctors One and Two

>>139910

i don't necessarily enjoy the rest of the series, hence why i've been watching a supercut of only mcgann's scenes and nobody else's, because i really don't care for the rest and their storylines are pretty boring, run-of-the-mill "drama" stuff. even mcgann's character started pretty unremarkable (high-profile neurosurgeon, super charming, intelligent, and here to save the day), and continued like that for a few episodes, until you hit a point in the show where suddenly everything just clicks, and you realise that he's been manipulating everyone the entire time. he's a character that very much follows the philosophy of "the end justifies the means," so he ends up with a lot of blood on his hands in the name of the greater good. some of the deaths he causes are direct, some less so. most of them are unforeseen consequences of his heavily flawed medical trial, but perhaps the cruellest is when he gave one of his closest friends (and a main character on the show at the time) locked-in syndrome, then ultimately murdered her, all because she discovered how ethical his trial really was. it's interesting because, ultimately, he does want to do good work, and save lives, but he's reaching the medical breakthroughs by climbing over a lot of corpses on the way. fascinating character. not always given the focus he needs, and i'm hesitant when it comes to the second half of the current two-parter (which looks to be the… permanent exit, for his character) because there's a lot of story potential that i'm almost certain will be wasted on account of the fact that whoever's in charge of the holby storylines often seem unable to write themselves out of a paper bag

the exterior is different? aside from RTD->Moffat I've never noticed a change in how the exterior looks unless there's like a side-by-side in the show (ie: Day of the Doctor, Twice Upon a Time). imagine if they got all the docs from tennant onwards involved in a 60th special. Jodie would have just left or possibly would still be around, and would look the same. It would be a few years for Capaldi, but he already had a few lines and grey hair, so it wouldn't even be that noticable a difference. His hair would probably be short, so they might imply he's come from series 8 or something.

But Matt and David would look so much older. It would be so jarring having just those 2 being noticably older, while the rest are more or less the same(ish)

Also that's 4-5 doctors. Probs too much to each be the hero, but I imagine the then current doctor would take centre stage.

I'm not doing this because I want to beat someone — or because I hate someone, or because I want to blame someone. It’s not because it’s fun. God knows it’s not because it's easy. It’s not even because it works, because it hardly ever does. I do what I do because it's right! Because it's decent! And above all, it's kind! It's just that. Just kind. If I run away today, good people will die. If I stand and fight, some of them might live — maybe not many, maybe not for long. Hey, maybe there’s no point in any of this at all, but it's the best I can do. So I'm going to do it, and I will stand here doing it until it kills me. You're going to die, too, someday. When will that be? Have you thought about it? What would you die for? Who I am is where I stand. Where I stand is where I fall. Stand with me. These people are terrified. Maybe we can help a little. Why not, just at the end, just be kind?

 No.140254

>>140159

NON-CANON TIER:

The Doctor, The Widow, And The Wardrobe: I've never seen this one but literally everyone seems to agree it's utter shit. I should give it a watch, the Chibpocalypse will probably make it seem like a masterpiece.

Twice Upon A Time: I remember feeling like this was the Twin Dilemma to The Doctor Falls's Androzani, but after seeing what came after it this doesn't seem so bad at all. It's the perfect bookend between eras; you can almost feel the kino draining away as it goes on.

WATCHABLE TIER:

The Snowmen: I've never seen this one either, except for the "Clara climbs up to the tardis" bits, but those were very good.

The Next Doctor: From Russel's "that was actually a bit insulting" period. 60 minutes of scholck strategically deployed to generate as much tabloid hype as possible. Completely disposable after it's served its purpose.

The Runaway Bride: Russel hit the bottom of the "kitsch holiday alien invaders" barrel pretty fast, didn't he?

The Time Of The Doctor: No idea why this one seems so popular lately. It's an utter clusterfuck, but I'm not exactly upset we got it, considering the Silence arc had gone on long enough by then. Everything about the regeneration was completely embarassing. Doesn't old 11 lie at the end of the episode when the truth field's still supposed to be up?

The Return Of Doctor Mysterio: Possibly the most generic Christmas special: comedy premise; written to be watched when inebriated, annoying thing the showrunner probably thought was funnier in his head, etc. It certainly exists.

GOOD TIER:

The Christmas Invasion: It got the Eccleston-Tennant transition done, and still retained a bit of Russel's darker wit. Feels like things are still moving forwards, which you really can't say about The Runaway Bride.

The End of Time: Yes, it's tastelessly meledramatic and overstays it's welcome, but there's an art to this sort of thing, and Russel was on point here. Also, it has the best regeneration scene in the history of the show; the transition from David's all-encompassing state of doom and gloom to Matt not giving a single fuck is pure kino. All it really needs is a better face-morph; as it is it almost looks like David's eyelids melt mid-regeneration and new ones form out of Matt's eyeballs. No wonder he groaned like that.

The Husbands of River Song: It turns out River's not all that bad when Alex Kingston doesn't have to pretend she has chemistry with Matt. The Capaldi era's "death" theme certainly helps ground the episode with a particular focus as well. A fitting end for the River/Doctor relationship (presumably - god, just imagine Chibnall trying to write for River), but the Kino Tier should be reserved only for true kino.

KINO TIER:

Voyage of the Damned: fuck you it's kino

A Christmas Carol: One of the only Moffat-era episodes to work primarily through visuals. Perfectly captures the simultaneous darkness and whimsy of the early Smith era.

Last Christmas: It's Inception but better than actual Inception. Easily the best use of the "don't do x" monster gimmick Moffat had been relying on in some capacity since Blink, and fittingly the last time it was used. After this episode the new approach was, indeed, uncluttered by any of the old approach, but the transition itself is stellar all the same. The GOAT Christmas special.

I was actually surprised when I found out how much it was hated on /who/, I thought it was such a nice quiet little story after the absolute balls-out explosive kino crescendo that was the series 10 finale. 1 being mischaracterized bothered the fuck outta me but I've learned to let it go and not ruin the episode for me, I enjoyed Bradley's performance regardless. I also think 12's regeneration scene is underrated. I adore the concept of the Doctor giving his next incarnation a pep-talk about all the ideals held by the character that should not stop being aspired to, regardless of whoever it is that comes out at the other end of the regeneration. Yeah some of the lines are a bit naff, but Capaldi absolutely sells it for me and there's some good stuff there as well. "If their hearts are in the right place, and the stars are too…" One little kino dash of Moffesque Shakespearean/fairy tale writing. What else could you want really for his final lines on the show

The only reason why I don't like the "children can hear your name" part of Capaldi's speech is that it fucks up the momentum of it and feels kinda out of place as part of that specific speech. Like everything before and after that is the Doctor telling his next incarnation everything he's learned since becoming 12 as well as reassuring himself about regenerating. Children being able to hear his name doesn't really fit with either of those.

Either way, there was no way Moffat would be able to top Eleven's regeneration speech. I remember when spoilers leaked out for that episode (remember Eleven's peg leg that ended up being cut?) and "I will always remember when the Doctor was me" was one of them, I thought it was the stupidest sounding line of dialogue and had to be fake. you'd have preferred Chibnall to write it on his own? >indian man writes a historical about indians

same thing, but I don't think Demons of the Punjab is "about" Indians, it's just the setting.

>woman writes a historical about women

jesus christ dude we know next to nothing about the episode other than it takes place during the Witch Trials and has Alan Cummings in it yet you're writing it off as "about women". I don't think the writer was hired because it might be an episode "about women". Every episode has women in it. Having an episode in the first series with a female Doctor take place during the Salem Witch Trials is such a briliant idea that I honestly think Chibnall fought against it.

anyway back to Doctor Who. If you were showrunner what new ideas would you bring to the show to keep things fresh? I've always wanted the show to experiment more in terms of episode format and how each story is being told. For example, something I thought of the other day that could be cool is if for an episode that takes place over a couple time periods in the past 50 years or so, the visuals changed to reflect how the show was filmed in that decade. ie: they travel back to the '60s and it turns black and white, then they go to the '70s and it looks like a Tom Baker-era episode, then they go to the late '80s and it looks like a Sylvester McCoy-era episode, etc. It'd kinda be like the opening to Name of the Doctor, though I'd have gone further with it and maintained the 4:3 aspect ratio for those clips.

A similar one would be to have an episode be done in claymation for narrative purposes, with the Doctor fully aware of the fact that they're now made of clay and trying to fix it, but I suppose that might be a bit too difficult to pull off for anything more than a single sequence in an episode

Also, I realized that part of what makes the "antimatter speech" so weird is that the camera focuses on the Doctor. If we had some reaction shots of Yaz and the other people in the room looking like "Uhhh….what the heck?" or even trying to snap her out of it, the intent would be clearer.

Yeah i mentioned something like this the other day, it'll be more clear over the next few weeks but it feels like we're at a point where it's actually a BAD thing for the showrunner to have personally written episodes, ironically this is also the most we've had a showrunner doing in a while.

Here's hoping that the next few prove this true and blow chibnall out of the water.

Yaz being honestly excited by 13 weirdly takes away from her character's depth? Like, because 13 is less angsty, it makes Yaz come off as literally following the leader.

hmmm yeah, seems like a lot of these issues center around yaz in a way, which is ironic because she's the most normal part of this series. I'm starting to think chibnall only wrote her in to make something consistent with the rest of nuwho (young woman companion). Maybe S11 will be bearable if I try to come up with some deeper explanation for the inconsistencies that have reared their heads so far.

RIP to the stream and this thread.

The watch face itself has a nice design, I've always loved how circular Gallifreyan looks. The sign on the band feels a little bit like overkill, but it's still a nice enough watch.

Yeah, Morph didn’t show up and Capaldo left while we were waiting. In the end only myself (NightmareofEden) and Sloath were left, so we decided to postpone.

there are events that happen but they mention it so you can keep track, all you need to know is that Eve Myles is the maid and has a dead husband

Chris Noth, Eric Roberts, Timothy Dalton

Underrated actors who all completely understood the tone of what they were doing in Doctor Who, and gave a pitch perfect performance
