For Thursday Torchwood, should we do the standard 2 stories, or would it be possible to do 3 stories, because the stream after this one will be Believe which is a 3 story set apparently best listened to in one sitting? What do you regulars think?

I'm not going to pretend it's some great cover but it's clearly going for an "aging poster" look hence the cheesy shape and discoloration, with the girls meant to look like cutouts of old photographs hence the drop shadow and uneven white rim (Nyssa's wavier hair giving rise to the inconsistency). The white text having a black outline is completely normal for BF covers.

Of course, because everybody lives in London.

>For [Ryan] to politely pick up a glove that a woman’s dropped and for him to be punched in the face, it was absolutely shocking. And it’s like, ‘Right, this is where we were only a few decades ago, and this is where we’re heading again'.

Yeah, black people are still being oppressed by university grants and better employment prospects, it's like Jim Crowe all over again!

>My kids haven’t learned about Partition, I know barely anything about Partition, and I’m a fairly political person. To be bringing that into all these homes, to start that conversation, and to put Yaz in the middle of that story and to see it through her eyes, it’s just brilliant. It’s just everything I want in television.

How can you have any sort of meaningful conversation after that episode? It's got zero context for why partition even occurred.

>It Takes You Away

'On the edge of a Norwegian fjord, in the present day, The Doctor, Ryan, Graham and Yaz discover a boarded-up cottage and a girl named Hanne in need of their help. What has happened here? What monster lurks in the woods around the cottage - and beyond?'

>The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos

'On the planet of Ranskoor Av Kolos, lies the remains of a brutal battlefield. But as the Doctor, Graham, Yaz and Ryan answer nine separate distress calls, they discover the planet holds far more secrets. Who is the mysterious commander with no memory? What lies beyond the mists? Who or what are the Ux? The answers will lead the Doctor and her friends towards a deadly reckoning.'

I feel that there's a lot of details from last season that were quite subtle and sweet, like the doctor gifting Bill some photos of her mum for instance, that aren't quite there in Series 11, or when they are they're not so subtle, so they don't seem very well done. b) Every episode has multiple guest stars that completely crowd out the already too large main cast, no real reason for this.

c) Every episode moves at breakneck speed even though barely anything happens.

d) When these moments do happen they are very blatant like Yaz talking to Ryan about his dad in Tsuranga or Ryan and Graham fixing the boat in Ghost Monument, completely inorganic.

Gaiman sounds like that one unknown Graham Williams era writer who tried to submit a story with cat people in Wembley Stadium.

>“Normally you have about five or six months to set up and do preparation on a series with, usually, a few unused stories in the cupboard. We had nothing. The Invasion of Time came about because the original script for that slot came in right up against the deadline. And when it did come in, it proved to be unworkable. It just could not be done. There were things in it, I remember, like an amphitheatre the size of Wembley Stadium filled with killer cats in the audience. So that story went out of the window, leaving us just five days to write three hours of television. I don’t think either Anthony Read or I went to bed for three days solid.

Whether your pro woman doctor or not, or pro social justice or not or pro nuwho or not, the facts are things don't look good.

The ratings in the UK are down to 5mil overnights on a Sunday evening against no Opposition and is a lead in to Strictly Come Dancing and the ratings are dropping lower and lower.

The USA ratings are abysmal the show which once was a flagship for BBC America is now only getting just over a mil per episode, with many people saying they just don't like Whittaker and cant understand what she's saying.

The Australian ratings are even worse, the show has completely dropped out of the weeks top 30 programmes.

There is no Christmas special.

And now the reports are that series 12 is going to be delayed until 2020. Possibly even Autumn/Winter 2020

Can we just face facts that nuwho's days are numbered?

It depends on audience reception, really. Americans always seem sort of inherently charmed by British people, and it would've added to the otherworldly feel of the character for them. Unlike with the BBC, the Fox version of the show would be pretty heavily focused on ratings—seeing as they are, after all, for-profit—which is why it was insisted that certain elements be added to the TVM to appeal to the mass market. If it had gone to series and the reaction to a British actor in the role was generally positive, they probably would've stuck with that, because if ain't broke, why fix it? They went through a really extensive casting process before they even got to McGann, and they were pretty dead-set on keeping that aspect of the series consistent. I think, under the same showrunner, the next Doctor would also have been British, but after that… I don't know. The thing is, any British actor taking up the role would've had to move halfway across the world for it (it must be noted here, also, that the TVM was filmed in Canada, rather than the US), and that's a lot to ask of anyone, particularly if they have family. McGann had to uproot his for the role, and he had a young son at the time too (see: pic related). I think, hiring a British actor again would only really have been viable if the show was a particular success, because you'd have a hard time convincing anyone to make that commitment for a two-bit little sci-fi gig, though I suppose there's an appeal in that it would've gotten them a foot in the door for American work. Still, I'm continually surprised that they asked so much of McGann for something they weren't sure was going to work (and actually didn't), and it's pretty remarkable that he accepted in the first place.

>>144692

Yeah, there were a lot of great ideas in the series proposal. Some a little odd, too, but not necessarily bad, depending on how it was handled. I'm forever sad that we have such limited footage of the console room, too. Limited footage of McGann as the Doctor in general, really.

The Pandorica was namedropped in The Eleventh Hour but reitereated again mid-series at the end of Flesh & Stone. "Silence Will Fall" I'm not 100% sure on when it was mentioned but I specifically remember the villain in Vampires of Venice saying they ran from "the Silence" and when the Doctor asks her about it she says "there were Cracks. Through some we saw Silence and the end of all things"

Honestly Series 5 is the fucking gold standard in terms of how to develop and maintain the mystery of an arc throughout the entire series without it feeling intrusive or overly complicated

I think that a lot of tarnished icons are going to go into hibernation or die as frustrated executives find themselves unwilling to fully commit to the idea that they made a mistake by going all in on left wing politics and need to call up some people who like Aristotle to guide them going forward. Instead, what they're trying to do is convince white men that the far left is not malicious without actually abandoning a single one of their bigoted and hypocritical positions; at best, they acknowledge a twisted semi-strawman version of the complaints leveled at them and try to grant white men a low position on the progressive stack as an olive branch (not without portraying them as petty and irrational in the process, of course).

Steven Moffat has said that Peter Capaldi “came close” to staying on in Doctor Who.

The Twelfth Doctor will regenerate in the 2017 Christmas special, but he could have carried on into Chris Chibnall’s debut series.

“It took Peter a long time to make up his mind,” Moffat tells Broadcast in a new interview.

“Chris tried to persuade him to stay [on for Series 11 in 2018].”

He adds: “I knew it was a possibility that he’d leave because Doctors tend to do three years. I thought that he might want to opt out, rather than go through the trauma of a change in command and maybe leaving a year later anyway. But I think he came close to staying.”

 No.144863

It’s been eight months since Peter Capaldi stated that he hadn’t made my mind up over whether he would return as the Doctor for Chris Chibnall’s Series 11 in 2018.

In-between that time rumours have swirled that the BBC want a “clean slate” with a new, younger Doctor to take over.

However Capaldi has now claimed he still hasn’t actually made the crucial decision whether to stay on or not.

Speaking to Wales Online he said: “I’ve been asked to stay on and I haven’t made my mind up about that yet, mainly because I don’t want to have to make that decision. I’m trying to avoid it!”

He continues: “Doctor Who does take a lot of time, but it’s a wonderful use of it. It’s special. I’m lucky enough to be in touch with other Doctors, and we all agree how extraordinary it is to be in this position. To decide to leave is a tough decision for everybody. [It was] very tough for Steven, so I’m just putting it off for as long as possible.”

The article concludes:

If he does decide to stay for series 11, which would start in 2018, it might mean he’d celebrate a landmark birthday as the Doctor.

“That would be a good way to spend your 60th birthday, don’t you think?” he says.

I've figured out the problem with this series. Doctor Who can have a bad monster of the week plot if its supplemented with good character writing. Doctor Who can have bad character writing if its supplemented with a good monster of the week plot. Series 11 hasn't really done either so far.

Like compare Smile/Ghost Monument.

Both had low stakes, and were mostly walking around pretty scenery. and had rushed endings. Yet Smile was enjoyable because the character writing was acceptable, the dialogue between 12/Bill was enjoyable as was Bills reaction to the planet. Where as the character writing in Ghost Monument was pretty much bland the whole episode.

Basically, Moffat could have saved this series. Bring back the Moff.

it's because even the worst episodes (bar possibly The Lie of the Land) in Series 10, and most of the rest of Doctor Who, are structured according to a particular theme that the story is supposed to illuminate

chibnall writes the story and throws in a bunch of fun facts and talking points with no regard for how they fit together

this is why Demons of the Punjab is far and away the best episode of the series so far even though it hasn't really blown anyone away. it's the only one that attempts to make it's elements and character moments fit together well enough to have actual themes, instead of a series of moments that are all trying to do one thing with no regard for how they work in concert with the others.

I think the reason why Series 10 is so meh for me

is that I never really cared that much about Bill as a companion. I didn't dislike her or anything, but she wasn't as compelling and interesting to watch as Clara or even Amy and Rory were. Maybe it's because she didn't get enough time to develop (if I based my opinion of Clara just on Series 7 I definitely wouldn't consider her my favorite companion) or because I always knew she wasn't going to last longer than 1 series since Moffat and Capaldi were both leaving.

I also think Moffat felt the same way for the most part. He'd have never in a million years had Amy, Rory, or Clara get shot at the beginning of the penultimate episode, spend the rest of that episode with them alone with The Master, end that episode with them getting turned into a Cyberman just before the Doctor arrives to save them, and not reverse that fate in the finale. He wouldn't even have done that to Nardole. But with Bill, it worked. Even Twelve seemed kinda resolved to her fate in The Doctor Falls. He spent 4.5 billion years punching a wall and dying over and over in order to finally return to Gallifrey and force the Time Lords to save Clara's life when she died. Bill being a Cyberman was just kinda an afterthought for him. Maybe he was too preoccupied with the two Masters and everything else going on in that episode, but every time Twelve and Bill interact in TDF it's like Twelve has a moment of "oh shit right Bill's a Cyberman now, fuck that sucks" and then forgets about it again when he walks away

She starts of the review as if she hasn't been giving a pass to every other episode of the series without fail

Also

>And more broadly, there’s a milquetoast tendency throughout to place responsibility for the violence of partition on the masses instead of on the British empire

Is such a fucking weak reductive take on what Vinay was going for with the conflict.

>There's an old voice in my head that's holding me back

>Well tell her that I miss our little talks

>Soon it will all be over and buried with our past

>We used to play outside when we were young, and full of life and full of love

>Some days I don't know if I am wrong or right

>Your mind is playing tricks on you my dear

>Cause though the truth may vary

it's time to share an unpopular bf opinion

after having listened to a significant amount of audios featuring her, i don't understand the hype that so many fans have about charley. some of my favourite audios put great significance on her relationship with the doctor, but i've never actually felt convinced by it. i get that she has a crush, but the doctor makes it clear it's not reciprocated, at least not in any way that she'd like, and he generally seems to be downright uncomfortable with it all. despite this, i see them lauded as the ultimate doctor/companion romance. maybe i'm spoiled by the length of the the dw books i've been reading, allowing for more drawn-out storylines, but i also feel like there's a lack of significant development before we reach audios like scherzo and we're expected to believe there's some sort of deep, near-fanatical devotion. i would've expected the subject matter of scherzo to be relevant only further down the line, though i appreciated it as a sort of character study into the doctor's approach to love. as for charley herself, her jealousy whenever the doctor interacts meaningfully with someone else is a little grating, and hardly fair to the doctor. it's not that i dislike her, i think she's lovely enough, she just rubs me the wrong way sometimes. perhaps in the few audios i have left to get through, things may change. at the moment, i can't say i'm convinced.

terror firma, scaredy cat, other lives, time works, something inside, memory lane, absolution and the girl who never was. i'm putting them in spoiler text because i think that last one might be when charley and eight part ways, though i don't know for sure. i'd like to enjoy charley more than i currently do, but all this time i just feel like i've yet to be sold on her fully.

also, i really appreciate that you shortened audios and then immediately had to type the full thing out anyway to explain. it was utterly useless, i love it.
