8th doctor audios with book companions WHEN

>>145646

Ah, shame about Samson and Gemma. I did enjoy them, but the nature of their appearance requires there to be mystery surrounding them, and if someone were to stumble across audios featuring them as companions before listening to Terror Firma, well… sort of ruins the twist, I suppose. With the other stories, I think I knew most of what they were referencing but either way, I'll definitely give the audio another listen at some point and maybe by then I'll have full context for everything.

As for Charley and C'rizz, I'm very excited to hear more of them. Other Lives is the audio whose cover features the Doctor with that terribly photoshopped beard isn't it? I'm excited for that for so many reasons, and the hilarious-looking beard is at least three of those. On a sort of related note, it would be interesting to hear a pure historical with C'rizz as a companion, given his appearance. Maybe there is one, and I've yet to encounter it. Perhaps he just shuffles along in the background blending into walls so nobody points at him and goes "ahh, a big scaley lizard thing! the devil's work!"

I still haven't remembered what other thing I was going to say, but I'm sure it'll come back to me at some point.

Good storytelling is fractal. Parts represent the whole, and the whole represents any part. Expand or contract a good story as far as you want and this will hold true, micro to macro. The self-destruction of unchecked ambition in Macbeth occurs at the geopolitical level as it does in the marital and the psychological. Unmindfulness as the doorway into horror resonates across multiple Kyle MacLachlans, families and screens both in and out of Twin Peaks: The Return. Cyborgs, soldiers, and rejected companions filtered through all televised Doctor Who in 2014 as Moffat processed the Ship of Theseus across an entire series. Writing stories in this way isn’t revelatory or unusual for layered storytellers of any sort of prestige, but the commitment with which Moffat started imbuing his Doctor Who under Capaldi with this kind of literary approach reflected a maturation of Doctor Who and a recognition of series as cohesive units of storytelling in their own right, not just platforms for episodes connected through sequential plot and character arcs.

We’re quite a ways from that kind of thematic unity by now, but “Demons of the Punjab” wasn’t just an implicit repudiation of the preceding five episodes and one special in their Doctor-centric wankery and reassertion of the expansive rather than constrictive storytelling potential of Doctor Who, it was also a return to fractal form, a script where every minor element reflected the major, and the major in turn could be shrunk down to harmonise with any minor.

Dental hunting for sport, listless youthful ennui, abrupt family tragedy. A galactic race, forgotten sentient rags, a reclaimed ship. Century-defying white supremacist movements, temporal determinism, the intricacies of bus scheduling. Spiders, egomaniac politicians, abandoning home. Space cancer, a vegetarian gremlin, male pregnancy. “Just make it really”. Andrew Ellard calls it “thematic dyslexia”. Ideas, characters, and events smashed together in not-quite-an-hour to be half-watched, narrated all the while.

Then comes…countries being split apart, a family being split apart, the attempted union of a new family through marriage. Religious prejudice and narrative prejudgement. Misconfiguration of narrative, and unprescriptive acknowledgement. One story being told on multiple levels, through multiple characters and events big and small. What story is being told? Almost as if it belongs in the self-aware latter Moffat era, one about stories themselves. What is being said?

We are not entitled the stories we expect, let alone want, and owe it to both ourselves and storytellers to listen and acknowledge where we all too easily judge and narrativise.

People project their own pet narratives onto other’s stories, and try to coax stories out of others to add fuel to the fire of their own narratives. Assumptions become the baseline of interaction and supposed exchange, rather than actually listening.

>Yaz tries to coax out Umbreen’s story about the watch through making it part of her own; “Your life’s OUR heritage”

>The Doctor immediately miscontextualises the Demons as Doctor Who villains, her heeding of not interfering in history less actual passivity than it is part of her attempts to assert the sort of Doctor Who episode narrative she is comfortable with over the proceedings (see also her misunderstanding of the dust)

>The Partition itself a product of a land subjected to staggering miscategorisation

>Umbreen tries to fit Manish’s own self-actualised actions as part of the narrative leading to her wedding

>Yaz immediately objecting to the clearly evident reality of Umbreen’s life; “But I thought…” in response to her living circumstances and “You can’t be” with Umbreen marrying a man not her grandfather

>”I thought I knew my nan’s story. She inspired me. But if this is her story, if this is her life, she lied to me”

>”So what, you’re a flower merchant?”

>”I said no fuss” / “You have to celebrate your birthday”

>Immediately trying to change/fix the watch

>”We’ve lived together for decades, Muslims, Hindu, and Sikh, and now we’re being told our differences are more important than what unites us”

>”What are we going to tell the others back there?” / “They don’t have to know”

>“You killed the demons.” / “No, just exiled them”

>Prem conceptualising his brother’s marriage as symbolic rather than familial, fitting it into the patterns he came to heed through “listening to angry men on the radio” - note his constant awareness and insistence on the magnitude of the Partition, identifying the episode’s conflict as symptomatic of that larger event while also missing its integrity unto itself

>”We are your people, Prem. India is your country. You and Kunal fought for this.” / “This is not what I fought for.”

When we instead just listen to stories, letting them play out without trying to commentate, frame, reposition, subjugate, and contort them into scenes and sources for our own stories, mindfulness can be achieved and much can be learned.

>Graham stresses mindfulness as the key to both enjoying and actualising the constant lived “story” of one’s own life as well as the key to understanding and empathising with others in what is of course his first conversation with Yaz

>Graham also emphasises the importance of self-actualisation and morality over moralising when he encourages Prem to recognise the value in sustaining his own goodness, honing his own morality and taking strength from that, rather than applying that morality to others in the way that leads to the cycles sustaining the sort of hatred Prem identifies as besetting him and his people

>The episode itself frees itself of Doctor Who narrative structure after its twist, sidelining both the science-fiction elements and narrative control of the Doctor and her companions after the second act, liberating the third act to let the guest character’s story play out on its own terms, which inevitably becomes the most compelling part of the entire series

>Yaz finally respecting Umbreen’s agency

>13 apologising to the Demons and recognising her ignorance and prejudice

>the Demons becoming witnesses rather than agents of change, honouring and acknowledging the fallen where Testimony extract and duplicate them - where Testimony is transactional, the Demons are purely selfless

>the episode’s placement implicitly endorses an idealised version of Remembrance Day as just that, about purely acknowledging and honouring the fallen instead of inevitably using them as fuel for whatever narrative they’re useful for in a given year - note the story’s condemnation of the way powers manipulate Manish and many like him, on a day representative of how powers whip up nationalistic militaristic war fervour for their own gain

>contrast Rosa’s usage of pop music, morals from the future (Krasko) and constant contextualisation from companions, to here where most discussion of Partition comes from the episode’s guest characters and it amounts to a small-scale story of forgotten hardship where even the score is shifted to accommodate the episode’s unique original story instead of the other way around

What’s more is, apart from a few odd lines of 13’s, Vinay - a first-time writer! - pulls all this off effortlessly and without comment. The rope Manish uses to mark the invisible, arbitrary line that is the border is recontextualised as the officiating symbol of Prem and Umbreen’s marriage, and not a single character comments on the inherent poetry of that. It’s an incredibly well put-together, self-assured script. I cannot wait to see what Vinay does next.

>On the other hand, I think i’ve figured out the optimum Who watching strategy to not get overly disappointed with “meh” episodes. Episodes must be watched near midnight, midweek, when you should be asleep but are instead a little bit tipsy. It’s easier to overlook the flaws and have a good time after a couple drinks.*

all that said, fitz is still my favourite by far

what i was trying to do anyway was see how long it took for the 10th doctor to do big finish after he left, and that's 6 years. we're just about 5 years out of matt smith's era now. i really hope they have a surprise 11th doctor thing for 2019.

So, when these stills were first being revealed, I noticed that Clara's suit really didn't seem to fit her very well, plus the tie being loose. I also noticed the rest of that episode's cast in proper suits, including Capaldi who to that point had mostly been in his sharp magician look. My conclusion was that the planet they were visiting had a dress code and Clara was presumably going to show up in a sweater or something, so she was going to be issued with a loaner suit and tie.

There was so much meaning and significance in Moffat Who that even little scraps seemed like they could carry important clues.

And I wouldn't mind Rassilon being a villain again. Chibnall wouldn't even have to explain anything. It doesn't even have to be the same actor as last time, just he's an ex-president of the time-lords, he has a grudge against the Doctor, and he's a bit of a cunt.

Because RTD has a dalek fetish. Serious answer though, RTD had built the daleks up as a species that could rival the time-lords, so they were already a bit overpowered, and then he had his version of the cybermen be from a parallel earth with early 21st Century technology.

By the logic he set up, Cybermen, being more or less contemporary earth tech…. should not stand a chance against the mythically powerful daleks. So I get it… But I also like the idea that classic cybermen and classic daleks are more or less evenly matched, and that the Capaldi era cybermen are more or less evenly matched with bronze daleks.

I've never been super clear on whether or not Cybermen have time travel. Humans get it eventually, that would suggest Cybermen should too. I could see Missy's Cybermen being built from material from the distant future, but hers are obviously so purpose-built that I'm not sure what relation they really have to the rest of the "species". In particular, the fact that she's replaced the Cyberiad with a chunk of the Matrix is pretty huge.

Several times in the classic series it seems like they're one step away from being that powerful, presumably it all came together as one giant leap in the early days of the Time War. To challenge the Time Lords you need not only to be able to travel through time (something we know they eventually are able to do) but to have the ability to control it, something the Daleks are rarely explicitly shown to have any tact with. I think the likely answer is they bootstrapped themselves, violating their own timeline by traveling back and giving themselves the technology they already had and thus causing aeons of development to take place over the course of a century or two. This would fit well with the way Genesis and Remembrance seem to act as bookends to the classic series Dalek storyline, and both feature the use of time travel to try and affect the central history of the mythology.

One of the lingering questions still completely unanswered about the Time War (unless Big Finish is approaching it, which I doubt) is whether the terrible things born in the war were all the result of Time Lord warfare, or whether the Daleks also took part in the making of nightmares. On the one hand, I like the idea of the Daleks and Time Lords both giving as good as they got, and it would be a fun history for the Cult of Skaro. On the other hand, I also like the idea of the Time Lords putting every ounce of nightmarish art into their war for the cosmos and the Daleks merely advancing inexorably as they always do. To an extent, it would be the ultimate explanation for the controversial decision to have the Last Day be just a laser fight over the surface of Gallifrey: The Time Lords tore the universe apart trying to unmake or destroy the Daleks, but the Daleks merely rolled forward inexorably. The horrors at the heart of the Time War are all of the Time Lord's making, the last Gallifreyan being exterminated with the same death ray as Nyder and Davros was always the ultimate outcome.

It would also help explain why the Cult of Skaro, founded to come up with new and creative ways to win the war, just go back to doing what Daleks always do.

DOCTOR: You weren't there in the final days of the War. You never saw what was born. But if the Timelock's broken, then everything's coming through. Not just the Daleks, but the Skaro Degradations, the Horde of Travesties, the Nightmare Child, the Could-have-been King with his army of Meanwhiles and Never-weres. The War turned into hell. And that's what you've opened, right above the Earth. Hell is descending.

MASTER: My kind of world.

>Lawrence Miles has the better take in Alien Bodies where the concept of a time lord enemy during a war is introduced but in the same novel the daleks are beaten offscreen by krotons and clearly aren't the enemy.

That take would have worked in the long run though. Alien Bodies was good, but it's hard to imagine the War in Heaven working on TV. Especially when it took until Obverse for people to find out who the Enemy actually was. TV audiences wouldn't have taken to it, and seen it as a Abrams-style twist that offered little satisfaction. Or when BSG kept harping on about the Cylons' plan, only to reveal nonsense.

I've said this before, but genuinely I want to see RTD write a novelization of Utopia/Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords. Imagine all the shit you literally could not show on TV, for budgetary or censorship reasons, that Rusty could really, properly indulge in. The horror he could just write down, and we'd all read it, and from then on whenever we thought about the story we wouldn't remember all the things we dislike about the episodes, we would remember the book version, and how wonderfully horrible it was.

Plus, after he had the balls to put Graham Norton's intrusion into the novelization of Rose, my god, imagine the hoops he'd jump through to explain "President Elect".

 No.146288

If the Daleks were reimagined as evolving to the same level as the Time Lords and adapting themselves to suit their new circumstances while retaining their evil xenophobic philosophy and a few identifying markers it would make sense, but they would have to be completely transformed.

The Nation estate wouldn't go for it because it would mean shaking off Terry's conception of the Daleks almost completely, not to mention how this sort of evolution would make them less marketable.
