 No.148715

Imagine starting the show with S10, watching WEAT/TDF and having no idea who the master was since they never tell you

 No.148716

What I find interesting with S10 is for all S10 was originally billed as a "jump on here, this is the new Unearthly Child/Spearhead/Rose/Eleventh Hour, brand new standalone series", it devolved into labyrinthine continuity references (fucking Alpha Centurai, Missy/Simm, Mondasian Cybermen, etc), but in a way I don't really think just operates as laziness or Moff and co falling back into old habits, but kind of a thematic reinforcement of the finale's point about "you can't escape your past". For all the self-improvement Missy might do, she can't undo the excesses of Simm, and for all the continuity-shedding Who might do, it can't really shake off its history in a sense. Starting off as "dive in here, no continuity required" and yet ending in a huge fanwank clusterfuck actually works for the finale as like a "you cant escape your past" thing a la Simm killing Gomez worked in an odd way imo. Not as neat an "introductory" series idea as S1, but certainly an interesting idea for a Doctor Who series, whether intended or not.

 No.148717

>"you've met the ex", what? is the master missy's ex boyfriend?

 No.148718

Maybe there's something to be said for S10's finale vaguely superficially resembling S8's ("the Master controls an army of Cybermen") tying in with how the S10 finale hinges off the whole "can't escape your past, trapped in self-destructive cycles of your past, past repeating itself" stuff (Missy trying to be good unlike Simmaster, Simmaster killing Missy, endpoint of several races being the Cybermen, yet another companion death, yet another regeneration, 12 ultimately deciding "fuck all the repetition, I don't want to experience the past again anymore, no more life for me").

It's funny. S10 is ultimately a very cobbled-together series, Moff's favour for Chibnall, keeping the show on-air while Broadchurch S3 was done, after Moff had done what he planned as his final series (S9), his final statement on the show (Hell Bent), then a comfy sendoff when the Christmas slot needed filling (Husbands).

Moff and all the press were drilling on the "soft reboot, The Pilot is the new jumping-on point, this is the perfect series to get someone into the show!" line, like Moff's last present to Doctor Who was a neat entry-level standalone series. That's a good idea. And it starts off like that, The Pilot does it really well, and the next few eps kinda continue that angle. But…cobbled-together. So S10 being kind of aimless and rudderless makes sense. He goes and does a few things he had a few ideas about over the years, or that he knows other people working on the show would like (more diverse companions, multi-Master special, Mondasian Cybermen).

There's a definite point where you can feel the "new entry-level series!" idea slide off and it devolves into continuity-heavy Capaldi era-ness again. I'm not complaining, I actually prefer that direction, but it feels jarring. Missy's arc, Simm, the Cybermen and everything, it's great but it feels really separate to "standalone entry-level series!" idea.

 No.148722

The series might have felt more coherent if it had committed more to the Missy stuff and made it a bigger focus from the start, instead of doing the Vault tease for half the series, that would have been good. Or if it just concentrated on being a comfy entry-level series with Bill hijinks. But at first I didn't feel the two approaches were melded in a very coherent way. I think the "randomly start Missy's turn good arc" actually works, maybe just because I sync with Moff's substitution style of writing so much, but I don't think the two approaches combined very neatly. But weaponising that sort of degradation into continuity really does play well with the themes of the finale.

Of course, Missy did transcend Simm in a way, but that wasn't escaping her past, that was accepting it and moving past it holistically. So too did the show itself in completing its big rumination on itself, literally to the point of 12 meeting 1 and, well…the ideal would have been them both getting over their issues with future lives and regeneration, now it's accepted with all that and presumably moved past it, then presumably entering enter a new age that can eventually be referenced the way Capaldi Who did to previous eras. But TUAT didn't go that way. And S11 didn't go that way. Sigh.

Mathieson concerns me. He's a writer whose knowledge of Who comes from NuWho. One of Series 11's strengths is that 13 usually bucks the trend of the Doctor "taking over the room", unlike past NuWho Doctors. For all of Mathieson's strengths, I'm not sure he'd be able to break away from the NuWho paradigm.

Russell was creating a paradigm, but Jamie is working with a paradigm already created. Furthermore, a lot of NuWho was a spiritual sequel to the Wilderness Years, which Russell was involved in, and definitely was impacted by. The thing is, there's a difference if all you know of the Doctors are post-War Doctors, who had certain similarities (until 13) due to Time War angst, versus knowing the variety of Doctors of One thru Eight. I'm not saying Jamie won't do a good job…but the fact that many viewers of Series 11 keep waiting for 13 to have her "big speech moment" or that the Doctor should automatically "take charge" indicates that NuWho may have created certain expectations in viewers of what being "the Doctor" is, that someone who had seen Classic and Wilderness Years might not fall into.

It's a legitimately new approach as an overall ethos for a Doctor (especially for NuWho), and I applaud it as the actually original part of what S11 is doing. But the distinction between lived-in geopolitics with tangible connections to today (Demons) to what I imagine will be standard robocapitalism=bad stuff in Kerblam which is so vague and distantly agreeable is something I think could play into differing reception between the two episodes. I don't want to judge too hard until I see the actual episode but I just think it'll be depressing to see something so old school to get overpraised in contrast to something so immediate and iterative in Demons. We'll see what happens.

On one hand, I get you. On the other hand, you're literally asking for what we've already had before. What if 13 isn't that kind of Doctor?

>I want her to do something for fuck's sake.

She has done things, often being the planner and delegator, or being the information-gatherer into dangerous places. You want her to be in charge, or the one who makes the pivotal decision? That may not be 13's style.

Like, this may not be Chibnall Who.

However, I do think we need more uses of her theme. And maybe one Thirteen-centric ep with "moments of realization."

Honestly, if Yaz and Ryan were stronger as characters, especially Yaz, I think 13's collaborative nature wouldn't sting as much.

>Stop misusing the term audience-hostile. If you want to describe something as challenging just use the word challenging.

Capaldi's era is constantly called audience-hostile on /who/, when "challenging" or "character-kino centric" or "fannish" would be more descriptive. If we can call 12's era, which played on Saturday for kiddies, audience-hostile, then we can call elements of Chibnall Who audience-hostile, when the shoe fits.

And some Who fans' reaction to a Doctor that is more collaborative, not the centre of the narrative, and sometimes ineffectual, definitely looks like hostility, with the complaints sounding sometimes like "Why can't it be like the previous Doctors?" I'm not even saying they're wrong (I'd like to see 13 get some proactive moments too) but they are def reacting to something new with shock.

The funny thing about 13's "This Earth Is Protected" moment in Demons…is that to me, it almost felt wrong for her Doctor?* The scene a few minutes later here 13 sadly realizes that the Thijarians aren't evil felt a lot more like how "13" acts.

*It's not that 13 was castigating evil that felt wrong, but that she was "pulling rank" to do it, claiming ownership. I dunno, I might be crazy.

I have super duper top secret spoiler information about the finale from my top secret trustworthy BBC source:

The Battle of Rashkoor Av Kolos is about tears in the fabric of reality erasing the doctor's life from time. by the time 13 manages to stop them, they've already erased two incarnations of the Doctor. 13 will from here on be referred to as 11. 11 then decides to find Rose again, because she needs someone to talk to about the time war, and how she's the last of her kind. It's VNA dark guys, it's gonna be kino

7A was shite, but a weak run of 5 episodes in 2012 is no basis to profane the Moff

 No.149342

Moffat and Capaldi's first season was way worse than this.

If it wasn't for Missy, the Daleks, and the last episode or so, it would have been a total bust.

I do have problems with the new series, and I personally found the last episode to be the worst, but it's not all bad - I'm still interested in seeing what the machine they're building can do

And the arc of the trio in S6 up until Closing Time is very good and nuanced

And the 2013 specials have excellent Doctor arcs

 No.149348

It was just the same thing over and over and over. Higher and higher stakes. It was just exhausting. If everything is the most important thing ever, nothing is important.

I welcome a "smaller" doctor story, for a bit. And I'm certainly not going to judge it until it is all over.

 No.149355

desu I feel Moffat was obsessed with giving weird little mannerism and titles to characters to make them more than they were. The girl who waited. The impossible girl. The last centurion. River songs entire schtick. It's just very over the top. It definitely has its charm in moments but it severely lacks any depth.

I can see people liking Amy and other Moffat characters for their wittiness and charm because it's fun to watch, and it's a cheap way to attach people to character's and even I like them for those reasons because it's entertaining but as far as characters go. I'd rather have boring but consistent characters who grow continuously than witty dialogue dispensers.
