that scene was really bad in general. iirc her race was handled well in the human nature two parter so not sure why it was swept under the rug so badly in that ep.

why did you make a kinogrid of 9 pictures if you posted a bunch more after? why not make a bigger kinogrid?

the answer is that Gareth Roberts is a cletus

it's very pretty. I do however feel that it's not great at portraying the whole world, or even all of London being a forest. No episode could to be fair. It's too ambitious for BBC cgi

Has anyone seen the interview where Moffat confirms BBC didn't want the Eight Doctor in DOTD? Lots of people shat on Moffat for War Doctor but if you look at the facts his hands were tired, Eccleston didn't want to return, Mcgann not allowed. He had to do something. And it turned out great all things considered.

If Doctor who exists as a show in-universe, why does nobody ever bring up the similarities when they first meet the doctor or have an "oh my god it's real" moment?

Since the Cushing films are confirmed to exist in the universe, should we conclude that the later TV show (known as "Doc-") was a spinoff of them?

Because it's a shit show that nobody watches.

Remember how S10 was meant to be a good jumping on point but quickly progresses into fanwank that doesn't even bother to explain things for newcomers?

Yes it was kino.

audience absolutely btfo

Imagine starting the show with S10, watching WEAT/TDF and having no idea who the master was since they never tell you

What I find interesting with S10 is for all S10 was originally billed as a "jump on here, this is the new Unearthly Child/Spearhead/Rose/Eleventh Hour, brand new standalone series", it devolved into labyrinthine continuity references (fucking Alpha Centurai, Missy/Simm, Mondasian Cybermen, etc), but in a way I don't really think just operates as laziness or Moff and co falling back into old habits, but kind of a thematic reinforcement of the finale's point about "you can't escape your past". For all the self-improvement Missy might do, she can't undo the excesses of Simm, and for all the continuity-shedding Who might do, it can't really shake off its history in a sense. Starting off as "dive in here, no continuity required" and yet ending in a huge fanwank clusterfuck actually works for the finale as like a "you cant escape your past" thing a la Simm killing Gomez worked in an odd way imo. Not as neat an "introductory" series idea as S1, but certainly an interesting idea for a Doctor Who series, whether intended or not.

>"you've met the ex", what? is the master missy's ex boyfriend?

Maybe there's something to be said for S10's finale vaguely superficially resembling S8's ("the Master controls an army of Cybermen") tying in with how the S10 finale hinges off the whole "can't escape your past, trapped in self-destructive cycles of your past, past repeating itself" stuff (Missy trying to be good unlike Simmaster, Simmaster killing Missy, endpoint of several races being the Cybermen, yet another companion death, yet another regeneration, 12 ultimately deciding "fuck all the repetition, I don't want to experience the past again anymore, no more life for me").

It's funny. S10 is ultimately a very cobbled-together series, Moff's favour for Chibnall, keeping the show on-air while Broadchurch S3 was done, after Moff had done what he planned as his final series (S9), his final statement on the show (Hell Bent), then a comfy sendoff when the Christmas slot needed filling (Husbands).

Moff and all the press were drilling on the "soft reboot, The Pilot is the new jumping-on point, this is the perfect series to get someone into the show!" line, like Moff's last present to Doctor Who was a neat entry-level standalone series. That's a good idea. And it starts off like that, The Pilot does it really well, and the next few eps kinda continue that angle. But…cobbled-together. So S10 being kind of aimless and rudderless makes sense. He goes and does a few things he had a few ideas about over the years, or that he knows other people working on the show would like (more diverse companions, multi-Master special, Mondasian Cybermen).

There's a definite point where you can feel the "new entry-level series!" idea slide off and it devolves into continuity-heavy Capaldi era-ness again. I'm not complaining, I actually prefer that direction, but it feels jarring. Missy's arc, Simm, the Cybermen and everything, it's great but it feels really separate to "standalone entry-level series!" idea.

remember when we thought jack was coming back kek

Remember when jack actually was going to come back but miracle day filming prevented it

File: f10f5b5feecebde⋯.png (130.36 KB, 240x240, 1:1, amy-gun.png)

add 8 now

The series might have felt more coherent if it had committed more to the Missy stuff and made it a bigger focus from the start, instead of doing the Vault tease for half the series, that would have been good. Or if it just concentrated on being a comfy entry-level series with Bill hijinks. But at first I didn't feel the two approaches were melded in a very coherent way. I think the "randomly start Missy's turn good arc" actually works, maybe just because I sync with Moff's substitution style of writing so much, but I don't think the two approaches combined very neatly. But weaponising that sort of degradation into continuity really does play well with the themes of the finale.

Of course, Missy did transcend Simm in a way, but that wasn't escaping her past, that was accepting it and moving past it holistically. So too did the show itself in completing its big rumination on itself, literally to the point of 12 meeting 1 and, well…the ideal would have been them both getting over their issues with future lives and regeneration, now it's accepted with all that and presumably moved past it, then presumably entering enter a new age that can eventually be referenced the way Capaldi Who did to previous eras. But TUAT didn't go that way. And S11 didn't go that way. Sigh.

I can't remember, did 13 have a line about her old self not letting her eat pears or am I making that up?

I fixed it guys

I had never actually thought of the S10 finale as being thematically about "you can't escape your past", good take neo

What like? I remember in the Partner's in Crime commentary, Julie said something about sneaking a word in twice, but I didn't realise what she meant

Julie is unironically the best producer the show ever had.

Before recording they choose a hidden word to include in the commentary without anyone noticing. The only one I remember was "Guantanamo Bay" for School Reunion. The best thing is when you think "that's a bit of a weird thing to say" without realising that you've heard the hidden word.

that's cute

The Pond era was basically Hipsters In Space whilst the Clara years is Stern Adults In Space. I can see why one era was ratings gold and the other slipped a bit.

why do you feel the need to preface that fact with "unironically"?

Because it's literally so true~

what is series 11 then?

I would have thought unironically went without saying in terms of how utterly amazing julie gardner is.

Just re watched it. Didn't like it on broadcast, not gonna lie. But I went in with the mindset that its about the characters and not really Gallifrey's comeback. I quite enjoyed it and it really highlighted the difference is writing quality between now and then (not that I needed any convincing).

Hell Bent is great when watching the second time. I already liked it on first broadcast, but noticed more details when I eventually rewatched it and ended up loving it. Looking back it seems like 12 & Clara's relationship was inevitably leading here, but I never saw any of it coming at the time. I wasn't the biggest Moff fan during Matt's era, but holy shit did he win me over in Capaldi's era.

>know this

>still have a hard time deciding if Troughton or Eccleston is a bigger git

Patrick Troughton got on really well with the guy who played Ramón Salamander though. Said he was the one good mexican

Troughton might be a homewrecker who lied to his family for years, but at least he didn't pretend like he was too good to be in Doctor Who.

>Chibnall and Whittaker to leave after Series 12

at least Troughton didn't whip his director with his belt as a """joke""" because he was brown.

Frazer mentions in the commentaries that when he and Troughton would go home they would stop off at a house and Troughton would give a woman money

>Troughton married his first wife Margaret Dunlop on 3 September, at the Union Church at Mill Hill in 1943.[29] Troughton started living a double life when, just after the birth of his third child, he chose to leave Margaret and their three children (then aged eight, five, and a few months) to live with girlfriend Ethel Margaret "Bunny" Nuens.[30] He maintained a deception of having stayed with his original family that was so successful that his own mother died unaware of the truth.[31]

If Chibnall was too weak to handle 10 episodes a year, who can take his place? Whithouse is too busy. Brooker is too busy.

Pertwee was a navy man

Probably the truest answer. Him, McGann and Tennant are the first three that come to mind when thinking about who have been in bigger movies

Peter Harness.

To have a good showrunner, you need an insane man whose undying desire to make Doctor Who trumps all sense and logic.

Fucking Jamie Mathieson and no one else.

Frank C. Boyce

You don't think a woman could be showrunner?

Chris Chibnall showed this isn't viable.

Moffat fucking held the show together and now that he's gone we see how fucking hard of a job being the showrunner of Doctor Who is. Praise Moffat.

Mathieson concerns me. He's a writer whose knowledge of Who comes from NuWho. One of Series 11's strengths is that 13 usually bucks the trend of the Doctor "taking over the room", unlike past NuWho Doctors. For all of Mathieson's strengths, I'm not sure he'd be able to break away from the NuWho paradigm.

What about me, anon, as showrunner.

I would be interested in knowing what Gatiss actually thinks about the show now. And Gareth too.

Russell was creating a paradigm, but Jamie is working with a paradigm already created. Furthermore, a lot of NuWho was a spiritual sequel to the Wilderness Years, which Russell was involved in, and definitely was impacted by. The thing is, there's a difference if all you know of the Doctors are post-War Doctors, who had certain similarities (until 13) due to Time War angst, versus knowing the variety of Doctors of One thru Eight. I'm not saying Jamie won't do a good job…but the fact that many viewers of Series 11 keep waiting for 13 to have her "big speech moment" or that the Doctor should automatically "take charge" indicates that NuWho may have created certain expectations in viewers of what being "the Doctor" is, that someone who had seen Classic and Wilderness Years might not fall into.

I just don't think the Doctor has to be in the limelight. Talking to people, getting them to be a team is just as interesting. Like when the Doctor gave everyone on the bus a job to do in Planet of the Dead, or similarly in Voyage of the Damned

I still felt that that story was slightly, nyeruehuehguege boring

I think the 13th Doctor has been passive, but I don't think it's an accident. It's probably meant to counterbalance the previous Doctor's "take over the situation" attitude. I suspect that Kerblam, and the next 2 eps, will counteract that a bit.

that noise he makes reminds me of the scientist from the simpsons

Be nice to him. Because he's about to fuck off in a year.

I forgot we're not allowed to have differing opinions from Neo here

>Like when the Doctor gave everyone on the bus a job to do in Planet of the Dead

So you're using one of the worst Tennant episode as an example to justify this?

I know it's no accident, that's the issue. She needs to get things going, I want her to have realization moments like every Doctor before her with her theme playing in the background. I want her to do something for fuck's sake.

I think viewers are having to get used to what a more team-working Doctor looks like. It's a legitimately new approach as an overall ethos for a Doctor (especially for NuWho), and I applaud it as the actually original part of what S11 is doing. If it's uncomfortable for some viewers, that makes it audience-hostile, in its own way, in a analogous, but Chibnall-era specific, way that Capaldi era was audience hostile with character kino.

a) Fuck Pete

b) I could well be wrong but what we've seen so far, and the advance reviews, makes me think we're getting a rather traditional s24 style runaround, basically a tried-and-tested story Doctor Who has done many times in the past, that I suspect will get disproportionally praised as a return to form over Demons for reasons I think will become evident.

If I get semantically confused I worry Neo's going to have one of his "special" "episodes".

If you know what you mean?

File: 844938900ed9698⋯.jpg (147.25 KB, 1080x720, 3:2, joker.jpg)

Stop misusing the term audience-hostile. If you want to describe something as challenging just use the word challenging.

Yeah, Chibnall Who is certainly audience hostile alright

I don't think I saw any POCs in the Kerblam! trailer, that's gonna be another reason Nilso likes it.

Absolutely agree. I'm not the biggest ever series 11 fan, but i appreciate chibs trying something new, and honestly I don't mind the Doctor not being the centre of the universe. I'm sure in the finale she will get a big hero moment though

File: 414f11fea9cdb89⋯.jpg (24.93 KB, 640x426, 320:213, nilso.jpg)

Not that I've seen, although I deliberately didn't mention the racial aspects of what I meant in that post to make it more palatable. But the distinction between lived-in geopolitics with tangible connections to today (Demons) to what I imagine will be standard robocapitalism=bad stuff in Kerblam which is so vague and distantly agreeable is something I think could play into differing reception between the two episodes. I don't want to judge too hard until I see the actual episode but I just think it'll be depressing to see something so old school to get overpraised in contrast to something so immediate and iterative in Demons. We'll see what happens.

Audience hostility is Red Letter Media calling their patrons pathetic on livestreams, or Lynch leaving the camera on a floor being swept for five minutes, not characters being written slightly differently in a show children still find easily entertaining.

> I want her to have realization moments like every Doctor before her with her theme playing in the background.

On one hand, I get you. On the other hand, you're literally asking for what we've already had before. What if 13 isn't that kind of Doctor?

>I want her to do something for fuck's sake.

She has done things, often being the planner and delegator, or being the information-gatherer into dangerous places. You want her to be in charge, or the one who makes the pivotal decision? That may not be 13's style.

Like, this may not be Chibnall Who.

However, I do think we need more uses of her theme. And maybe one Thirteen-centric ep with "moments of realization."

Honestly, if Yaz and Ryan were stronger as characters, especially Yaz, I think 13's collaborative nature wouldn't sting as much.

>robocapitalism=bad stuff

that's not what the ep is about according to pcj

I do agree that it's probably gonna be overly trad and unambitious with plenty of references to the past to make it popular. I am excited for a s24 style romp though, I do like those. Might not watch sober though

I haven't even seen the preview clip to be fair so it's entirely likely I'm way off. I imagine I will enjoy the ep, it's just the reception I think might induce some eyerolls.

If Kerblam ended up taking the form of a writer literally just verging about trivial grievances over Amazon I would be thoroughly entertained, let me tell you

If the writer of Heaven Sent had profaned the Moff I'd have called it the worst ep of the show.

Can we think of anyone else allowed to profane the Moff other than RTD, Gatiss, and Loz? I wouldn't even allow Capaldi desu.

There are kinds of "people" who will prefer Kerblam to Demons, and that's okay.

Slightly different is completely underselling it. Having the Doctor take a back seat in the narrative is a major shake-up to the show's core and the trajectory it's been on since its fucking revival 13 years ago. It's a major risk taking such a drastic change since the audience is not used to it. Deliberately doing something that makes the audience uneasy, unsure, or uncomfortable: audience hostile, simple as.

The writer of that episode is probably Moff's biggest critic tbqh

walking into nu-nu-nuwho threads like.

The last thing Chibnall is trying to do is antagonise anyone, his entire ethos is against that. He is trying to court a new audience while dimly trying to sustain the old. "It's a recruitment year", not an attempt to shake up past fan conceptions of the character. He is not deliberately trying to make the audience uncomfortable.

that's so true it stops being funny and makes me sad

He's perfectly happy antagonising the entire right wing.

that's so true it stops being funny and makes me sad

>Stop misusing the term audience-hostile. If you want to describe something as challenging just use the word challenging.

Capaldi's era is constantly called audience-hostile on /who/, when "challenging" or "character-kino centric" or "fannish" would be more descriptive. If we can call 12's era, which played on Saturday for kiddies, audience-hostile, then we can call elements of Chibnall Who audience-hostile, when the shoe fits.

And some Who fans' reaction to a Doctor that is more collaborative, not the centre of the narrative, and sometimes ineffectual, definitely looks like hostility, with the complaints sounding sometimes like "Why can't it be like the previous Doctors?" I'm not even saying they're wrong (I'd like to see 13 get some proactive moments too) but they are def reacting to something new with shock.

The funny thing about 13's "This Earth Is Protected" moment in Demons…is that to me, it almost felt wrong for her Doctor?* The scene a few minutes later here 13 sadly realizes that the Thijarians aren't evil felt a lot more like how "13" acts.

*It's not that 13 was castigating evil that felt wrong, but that she was "pulling rank" to do it, claiming ownership. I dunno, I might be crazy.

The Battle of Rashkoor Av Kolos is about tears in the fabric of reality erasing the doctor's life from time. by the time 13 manages to stop them, they've already erased two incarnations of the Doctor. 13 will from here on be referred to as 11. 11 then decides to find Rose again, because she needs someone to talk to about the time war, and how she's the last of her kind. What the fuck are you talking about lad. Just because other people use "audience-hostile" incorrectly, anyone can and it doesn't matter?

Patel - Harness

McTighe - Mathieson

Wilkinson - Dollard

Hime - Cotrell-Boyce

I'm noting that using audience-hostile to describe an element of S11 is the first time I've seen /who/ argue about that, whereas describing 12's era as audience-hostile has never been questioned.

> if its wrong

don't worry mate i've got no idea either

I question it whenever I can.

I think there's a case to be made that Hell Bent and especially Sleep No More could accurately be described as audience hostile but that's about it.

Sleep No More I'd agree with. HB, eh, it's challenging but I think there's a distinction between antagonising the audience and just surprising them.

I specifically think the assumption that the Doctor will wipe Clara's memory a-la Journey's End and the grappling with that is a little hostile, but, y'know. Not a science.

>Come back? He was the worst thing to happen to this show when he became showrunner. He should've stayed writing solo-episodes.

Kill the Moon is audience hostile because it's bad and about abortions

>Solo episodes

Ah yes, Moff's eps from series 5-10 are all co-written with his Showrunner Personality

AU where Class does extremely well but the show was the exact same, and that convinces BBC to make P. Ness the new showrunner. How shitty does Ness Who get? In ways that Chibnall Who hasn't reached?

Will Barrowman mention audio dramas on tv for normal people?

At least PNess would have a vision for the show

Class and S11 are about equal in quality. And they both have the same problems. Lack of cast chemistry. Villains are generic. Seems conflicted on whether it wants to be a brand new show or not.

What creativity? It was just British Buffy.

>Lack of cast chemistry.

As Series 11 fan (and Class fan) , I will immediately admit that Class treated its main cast much better than S11 has treated the TARDIS team, in terms of characterization.

Absolutely fucking ruined, based Cats

In this scene she gets horny, and holy shit it's so much more shit-kino than anything you can imagine. (nsfw obviously)

Watching this is an experience not dissimilar to watching The Room

i only watched one episode of class because of based capaldman but dropped it immediately after

I haven't even watched a second of Class and I never will

Yes, I do inhabit Nilso's head rent free. Thank you for pointing that out.

if i could erase one thing from existence it would be this show

It's not because it's not actually notated like a court case although that was the inspiration, and it's American not commonwealth so "versus" or "vee" would be closer than "and" or 'against".

skellys here

You'd miss out on the wonderful single-room ep, the episode that is a rumination on grief (that might make a good double feature with Heaven Sent, now i think), the utter barminess of the Metaphorical Engine, the April eps that parallels anger of abuse with anger from the shadow aliens, and the gutsiness of the ending ep.

Class had a vision and committed to it

There are things about it that I respect, even though the day to day high school melodrama is unappealing

Class>Doctor Who

Let's compare

>a gigantic fungus that spawns images of your dead loved ones on its tendrils

>a sentient tattoo that manifests as a skin-peeling dragon

>the evil overlord of the shadow warriors is afflicted by the hormonal imbalance of a teenage girl

>a device that can physically teleport you into any possible afterlife

>a meteor fragment containing an imprisoned psychic intelligence

>a guy with teeth in his face

>rags that talk

>cosmic racist

>giant spiders

Same. It's a godawful trainwreck but I respect Ness for it more than I respect Chibnall for s11 so far

I got sick and tired of how flippant it was about everything, with a main character who didn't have much of a personality beyond shouting speeches and being eccentric for the sake of being eccentric.

7A was shite, but a weak run of 5 episodes in 2012 is no basis to profane the Moff

Moffat and Capaldi's first season was way worse than this.

If it wasn't for Missy, the Daleks, and the last episode or so, it would have been a total bust.

I do have problems with the new series, and I personally found the last episode to be the worst, but it's not all bad - I'm still interested in seeing what the machine they're building can do

The Crimson Horror

A Town Called Mercy

Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS

Amy and Rory's S5 arc is very fulfilling imo

And the arc of the trio in S6 up until Closing Time is very good and nuanced

And the 2013 specials have excellent Doctor arcs

It was just the same thing over and over and over. Higher and higher stakes. It was just exhausting. If everything is the most important thing ever, nothing is important.

I welcome a "smaller" doctor story, for a bit. And I'm certainly not going to judge it until it is all over.

finished episode 3, i'll watch ep 4 tomorrow but im really busy after then so im not sure when i'll finish it

How do you think the BBC will report on Chib leaving and s12 being cut short? WIll they try spin it as part of some master plan?

A rose by any other name…

>this thing the previous 2 showrunners did is too hard!

>it's too hard, I can't think of anything for a christmas special

>it's too hard, I can't deliver a series a year

desu I feel Moffat was obsessed with giving weird little mannerism and titles to characters to make them more than they were. The girl who waited. The impossible girl. The last centurion. River songs entire schtick. It's just very over the top. It definitely has its charm in moments but it severely lacks any depth.

I can see people liking Amy and other Moffat characters for their wittiness and charm because it's fun to watch, and it's a cheap way to attach people to character's and even I like them for those reasons because it's entertaining but as far as characters go. I'd rather have boring but consistent characters who grow continuously than witty dialogue dispensers.

Akhaten is boring and cringe at, can't get through it without pausing at multiple points to focus on it
