Hanne is offended because Ryan’s narrowmindedness assumes her blindness to be such a hardship that her dad would leave her.

>In “It Takes You Away,” the fate of the universe rests on the Doctor’s ability to seduce a woman.

>Sure, it could be argued that the Solitract is not technically a woman, but a conscious universe. However, the Solitract only ever presents as female. Peter Capaldi famously refused any romantic scenes for the Twelfth Doctor, even declining to remove his wedding ring for the part. There was a line Capaldi was reticent to cross with the character. Here, Whittaker embraces the opportunity, giving herself over to the scene and approaching the Doctor’s actions with courage. It is an amazing moment of representation, highlighted by a fearless actress’ talent. Actually to expand on this I think Who's lack of canon is a strength of the series.

The Doctor and other people are always fucking around with time, but we, being outside their universe as viewers, are immune to that. So what *we* see has happened, and what the doctor has *experienced* is going to be different, because of the impact of time travel upon the universe.

13's unique characteristic is her empathy, and her willingness to relate to and put herself on the same level as the people around her She has a more personal relationship with her companions, staying with them for a week helping them deal with the grief she inadvertently caused. She's about to practically be murdered in cold blood by a powerful king and her response is to calmly talk with him and try to appeal to his better nature. And now she's even managed to touch hearts with a sentient universe, enough to muse later on that she made a new friend. This is a deliberate choice to contrast 12's alien nature when dealing with other people in order to distance her from her previous regeneration, and to finally retire the Lonely God persona that's followed the Doctor throughout the modern series.

remember the doctor just happening to say 'i love my sonic' in it takes you away, and then ribbons later tries to get it from her? that kind of obvious telegraphing is series 11 all over.

at least it'd lend the ghost monument a bit more significance. well, i'm not at all interested in anything to do with that episode, but it makes it less bizarre that the doctor would be so invested in finding out about the planet's history, finding out about the stenza which she just happened to meet for the first time in her previous adventure, and then seemingly just never references it again.

only cuz Chibnall and Strevens are too scared to actually do anything with the fact that the Doctor is a woman now because they don't want to alienate the cletus portion of the fanbase.

>“Once Peter [Capaldi] had decided he was leaving, the next Doctor was always going to be a female Doctor. That’s what Chris wanted, that was part of his conditions of doing the job.”

>He added: “We knew in our gut it was about time and it felt like the right decision, and the character is not gender-specific, in any way really."

so Chibnall wanted to only cast a woman in the role, but at the same time he's saying gender doesn't matter to the Doctor. Both of which are fine in their own right, but they contradict each other. You can't have your cake and eat it too

 No.162028

>>162027

Well, they don't exactly contradict each other because they're sort of saying different things. Gender doesn't matter to the Doctor in-universe, but gender does matter in the context of the real world.

>>162027

>so Chibnall wanted to only cast a woman in the role, but at the same time he's saying gender doesn't matter to the Doctor. Both of which are fine in their own right, but they contradict each other.

There's no contradiction. Casting a woman in a role previously reserved for only men makes a statement in real life, especially in showing that a woman can be the Doctor as much as a man. But, as well, in-universe, the Doctor's personality in each incarnation is based on much more than the gender, and so there doesn't have to be gender-specific differences or extreme focus on her being a woman.

TL;DR: There's no reason that the concept of being a "Doctor" be gender-specific. Casting a woman in the role is a good way to prove this, as is having the gender change not having a big effect on the portrayal of the first woman Doctor.

 No.162030

That was okay. I fucking hate Clint Hassell.

Which eps do you think were written with a gender-non-specific Doctor in mind—Kerblam, ITYA or both? no, I said that yas has never done something that can explicitly be attributed to a muslim upbringing.

They've made her being a police officer relevant to how she processes and handles situations (albeit sparingly, but an attempt was made). They haven't made her being mulsim relevant. She's never shown to process a situation by relating it to a concept from her religion, or discuss her religion in any way outside of mentioning that she's been called slurs on her way home from the mosque - and going to a mosque when your whole family is muslim is not indicative of her being personally religious.

While I definitely liked the episode a lot I think the anti-zone sequence with Ribbons should've either been trimmed down or cut out completely. It doesn't really serve much of a purpose, Ribbons only exists to get them from one end of a linear path to another before getting killed by the giant moths who don't do anything for the rest of the episode. It's a fine sequence on its own, but it's way too long and unrelated to the purpose of the episode, which is only introduced *after* the anti-zone sequence is finished and Ribbons is dead. Instead, the episode could've given Ryan more to do, it could've made the dad more of a sympathetic character, and also maybe even explained why Erik and Graham were given their dead loved ones back as a way of keeping them in the mirrorverse while the Solitract didn't even try to keep Yaz and Thirteen in its universe. Thirteen I can at least buy the frog at the end being her carrot on a stick, but the only reason why I can think Yaz wasn't shown anything by the Solitract is because there's literally been nothing/nobody from the previous 8 episodes that Hime could've used for her character.

Still, Jodie truly felt like the Doctor for the first time this series. It was also nice for her to finally get a Doctor speech, even if it was a super weak one compared to speeches from the RTD and Moffat eras. Pretty much everything about the scene with Thirteen and the frog is everything I could've wanted from this series. It was surprising, touching, creative, and most of all: it felt like great fucking Doctor Who.

Also, 13 continues her theme of being direct–her "You do not want those words to be your last ones" reveals the flip side to her empathetic side. She has no problem handling enemies (altho note that she's bluffing with that screwdriver, which can't actually hurt Ribbons.) Also, note her cleverness when making her "map."

He's actually right though. I remember thinking the episode was boring until I was amazed grace showed up because it was actually something interesting. The frog scene was interesting from a design and direction standpoint, but the actual narrative reason for that scene was dumb and unjustified.

It's an episode with some good ideas that hide the shittiness as long as you don't think about it with too much depth.
