Not the anon you asked, but I dislike 13 because she doesn't stand for the same values the Doctor has been known to stand for. She liberally accepts that a corrupt system simply needs a few hierarchical reforms, allowing a young, wayward freedom fighter to die despite not understanding the situation in the very same episode. She plays into Krasko's theory that political activism, namely the rights of black people in America, is vulnerable enough to succumb to the flexibility of time, implying that not only is he right to think that preventing her from making her exact statement on that exact bus etc. would stop Parks from ever "rising up" again, but that it'd threaten the stagnation of black rights at all (he roughly says "people like you will stay in your place" once he’s dismantled the bus boycott, and the Doctor admits that "he's smart, I'll give him that"). Whittaker as an actress is the weakest of all Doctors, I don't think I'm alone in that opinion. The few moments she has been allowed to do things the Doctor would normally do – swimming to save Willa's gran, or watching over Ryan as he rides his bike in memory of Grace – are specifically thanks to what's been written in the script and have nothing to do with the performance she gives in them. To be fair, she's given absolutely nothing to work with: no points of interest, no specific traits, no layered undertones. Just quirky, fanfic-tier dialogue suited to any generic incarnation of Dr Who. Both Chibnall's depiction and Whittaker's portrayal of the Thirteenth Doctor are terrible.

the big noodley thing ended up knocking her down when she electrocuted it (?), i guess, but that wasn't tim shaw's fault. you could stretch it to be his fault if you supposed that, by bringing the technology to earth in the first place, it eventually led to grace's death and it's therefore caused by him. but you could then start applying that logic to an awful lot of stuff and start blaming people for things out of their control. "this guy got stabbed, but it's not the fault of the attacker, it's the fault of the person who made the knife in the first place" etc. ultimately, though, grace died because of her own actions. tim shaw isn't as directly responsible as the show keeps trying to pretend.

Most of s11 felt like an episode 7 filler from the Tennant era before the Moffats and Cornells and RTDs came in with the actually good stuff. This episode went a step further and felt like an especially umimaginative Nick Briggs audio. I'm not kidding you, all the Briggs hallmarks are there: the return of a shite villain nobody cares about, humanoid aliens enslaved by said villain (bonus point for the quasi-mystical powers), a big transmitter-weapon thing threatening the Earth, a stranded human spaceship crew, shooting at robots, unengaging moral dilemmas, sci-fi clichés bonanza. This is Briggs Finish taking over the actual show.

If I hadn't been expecting something like this since Chibnall was announced, I'd probably be mad at how he managed to waste a golden occasion to relaunch the show. He was given complete freedom, more support from the BBC that Moffat or even RTD at his peak ever had, and through a mix of risk aversion and sheer lack of imagination he managed to produce something that makes Class look brilliant and innovative.

At least the non-Chibnall episodes were bearable. In fact, I thought Demons of the Punjab, Kerblam! and It Takes You Away were pretty good all things considered, though still far from the best of the previous series. But overall, it's hard to argue that Doctor Who ever showed this lack of a vision before.

assuming i'm not reading your post wrong here, what the fuck do you mean? what, exactly, is the message delivered through this disparity in particular? is it to do with the whole anti-revenge thing? because that assumes that tim shaw was responsible in the first place. every single character is of the firm belief that tim shaw killed grace, but he didn't. there is nothing in the finale or otherwise that touches upon the fact that tim shaw technically isn't responsible. they all just blame him. without any deeper thought. even though the audience watching knows that it doesn't quite add up. but again, what does that disparity add? what message does it send? what's the purpose of the characters believing something utterly different from the truth, without the show ever acknowledging that that's the case, without it ever commenting on that?

You know it's back like it never left (it never left)

It's got a new attitude and a lease on life

Vinay and Ed Hime,

Joy and McTighe, we can sleep when it dies

TARDIS like a pigsty, grab the keys to the ride

Like Nilso's straight

The frog is gay (wish Yaz was gay)

It's on a break, Chib's running late, what can I say?

I heard you die twice, once when you get screwed by Michael Grade

And the second time is the last time that someone reads a VNA

So when the show gets laid to earth, did it take more than it gave?

Did it alchemise emboitments or was it, nyaaghn, very clichéd?

Legend, it's exodus, searching for euphoria

Trudging through the shit to find the kino, no ignoring us

Surrounded by dead bodies we're like Davison in Warriors

My Moffat told me never scare the hare, woo!

[Chorus: Skylar Grey]

I feel glorious, glorious

Got a chance to start again

I was born for this, born for this

It's who I am, how could I forget?

I made it through the darkest part of the night

And now I see the sunrise

Now I feel glorious, glorious

I feel glorious, glorious

Should I continue?

>allowing a young, wayward freedom fighter to die despite not understanding the situation in the very same episode

I agree that 13 not castigating Kerblam! was a serious misstep. However, it should be pointed out that Charlie was literally going to kill 100s of random people for his cause, and that possibly could include old people, young children, and even fellow workers. This wasn't a calculated attack, this was a man willing to kill innocents, and he wasn't even smart enough to recognize that he was hurting his own cause in the process. On a systemic level, Kerblam is terrible (and it murdered poor Kira mostly out of spite and brand protection, and the manager and HR was complicit by neglect, to a degree. But on an individual level, Charlie was doing horrible killings, and not even being smart about it. (His goal for more humans in Kerblam…just brings more people into life-killing jobs?) I would have seriously liked 13 to lay into Kerblam, but Charlie was no innocent (though he was a victim). Frankly, his actions wouldn't have made the system any better.

>political activism, namely the rights of black people in America, is vulnerable enough to succumb to the flexibility of time

> stagnation of black rights at all

On one hand, yes 1 woman can rarely divert the whole black rights movement. On the other hand, this is almost starting to sound Whiggish ("civil rights are inevitable progress!"), and ignores that stagnation can happen, and that stagnation might be payed for with human lives. What if Charlotte had become the bus-rights proponent instead, and the fact she was a young pregnant woman gave the opposition enough fuel to slow down black rights significantly?

>would stop Parks from ever "rising up" again

That's unlikely, but maybe it wouldn't have gotten the correct press to cause the right impact. Heck, maybe had she stayed on that bus, she would have died the next morning, or a fire would have swept through the NAACP facilities. (I specifically remember that at least one piece of legislation in history has been effected by several proponents dying in the Titanic.)

>The few moments she has been allowed to do things the Doctor would normally do – swimming to save Willa's gran, or watching over Ryan as he rides his bike in memory of Grace – are specifically thanks to what's been written in the script and have nothing to do with the performance she gives in them

This is consistently very contradictory.

<stagnation of black rights at all

>On one hand, yes 1 woman can rarely divert the whole black rights movement. On the other hand, this is almost starting to sound Whiggish ("civil rights are inevitable progress!"), and ignores that stagnation can happen, and that stagnation might be payed for with human lives. What if Charlotte had become the bus-rights proponent instead, and the fact she was a young pregnant woman gave the opposition enough fuel to slow down black rights significantly?

Stagnation can happen, but Krasko coming from the 79th century or whatever it was implies that that stagnation is carried through over many, many centuries, across the universe. Rosa Parks' impact in the bus boycotts is implied to have been a singular deterministic event rather than a planned and considered statement for civil rights, as it's known to have been (it's also known it would have been carried out regardless of whether Parks' boycott had been successful or not.) "Slowing down black rights significantly" ≠ preventing the rights of black people entirely (thus "keeping them in their place" as Krasko believes).

<would stop Parks from ever "rising up" again

>That's unlikely, but maybe it wouldn't have gotten the correct press to cause the right impact. Heck, maybe had she stayed on that bus, she would have died the next morning, or a fire would have swept through the NAACP facilities. (I specifically remember that at least one piece of legislation in history has been effected by several proponents dying in the Titanic.)

Thoughts on Occam's Razor?

>Her performance of the script has nothing to do with her performance? I don't mean to be glib, what do you mean?

Swimming to save Willa's gran was written as part of the script. Whittaker did not do that of her own accord. I'm not praising her chosen form of swim stroke, I'm praising the very fact that she swam to save the character in the first place, just the same as I'm not praising Whittaker for the way she dramatically stood in the scene where she watches over Ryan, but the fact that she watched over him at all.

>Charlie was no innocent

>(though he was a victim).

I agree that he wasn't an innocent. He had already killed people and was planning to kill more to get his point across. I also agree that he was the victim of a corrupt and dystopic system not terribly dissimilar to the one we currently live under, and that elevates his innocence – just as Islamic fundamentalists or Irish rebels feel the need to use violence to reinforce their points, whether right or wrong, there is justification in that they are pressured to do so and that liberalism will prevent action from being taken there. See "the system is not the problem; the way people use and exploit the system is the problem. The people like you." The Doctor, rather than stepping in to fight for a just cause as well as preventing a person from committing genocide, puts the blame on the victim of an oppressive capitalistic regime with striking resemblance to the one she had dismantled less than a year ago in her previous incarnation. My point there was that this Doctor does not stand for the values the Doctor always has. Any single one of them would have saved Charlie from making a catastrophic mistake and gone on to help him fully reform (not even necessarily overthrow!) the system that causes the working class to remain powerless, the system which causes the working class to resort to murder to attain the power needed for change. There's a whole political debate there in itself, but even putting that aside, there's no denying that the Doctor "had no right!" (in her own words) to pressure Charlie into dying in that explosion. Graham offers Charlie the chance to come back to them, to which he staggers forward slightly. 13 then angrily suggests this is his "last chance", to which he falters and asks what's happening. The whole scene is fucked.

>But Whittaker did perform the script. She's the one who chose the facial expressions that showed 13's mental struggles over saving the grandmother.

>But Whittaker is the one who performed the stand. Also, that scene where 13 stood to watch Ryan's bike riding is distinctly 13–she actually took time to stick around and watch, a trait that gets continued when 13 helps the funeral in Tsuranga Conundrum.

I'm going to have to rephrase again aren't I. I'm not commending the facial expressions Whittaker made before or after she swam, and I'm not commending the way she swam. I'm not praising the way she performed the stand. I'm praising the very fact that the Doctor did those things in print in the scripts of The Woman Who Fell to Earth and The Witchfinders. It's like praising a specific moment of a book. (This isn't to say I think her facial expressions etc. that you mention were poor; I don't think she's a bad actor, I just don't think she's good enough for the role. And that's besides the point: those facial expressions and the like weren't what made me like the things I'm praising here.)

>empathetic

All incarnations are, some are just better at showing it than others. Empathy is the Doctor's whole "thing," and what the Doctor is and what the Doctor represents wouldn't work without that trait.

>gives responsibility to her team

All incarnations do that, and for all that 13 seems to defer a lot, it's not as though the other Doctors only did it rarely. They always give their companions stuff to do that needs to be done.

>tries to let people have their own experience wihout barging in

The Doctor having the courtesy not to supplant themselves where they're not needed isn't unique to 13.

>enjoys newness, both in experiences and friends, and will get excited for both

Again, not unique.

>babbles out loud when thinking

Wow, this is a totally novel concept for the Doctor! Absolutely brand new, never seen this before!

>likes building tech on the fly

Like every incarnation, yeah.

>dislikes unnecessary violence (don't kick an enemy when they're down or surrendering)

Like every incarnation, yeah.

>often psychoanalyzes enemies in order to defeat them

Like every incarnation, yeah.

>dislikes when someone relies on violence as a main solution

Like every incarnation, yeah.

>often communicates her disgust with a glare

God, I'm starting to see a pattern here.

Yes, she has a personality. You're right. She is definitely a character and she's definitely the Doctor, that's for sure, but is she unique? Does she have something about her personality that makes her stand out? She's a conglomerate rather than an individual, right now. At the very least, the finale did finally acknowledge a character flaw—something previously attributed to poor writing, perhaps is now supposed to be her defining trait: she's a hypocrite, above and beyond the usual. But the show never makes an effort to be critical of that, especially because all of her worst offences (see: Arachnids solution, the end of Kerblam) were treated as hero moments. The Doctor should absolutely have all of these traits you've listed, in that "generic Doctor" should be the absolute baseline, and then traits unique to that incarnation should be added on top. If anything, your lists only help to strengthen my belief that she's got nothing to define her as an individual. I wish she did, I really do. But assuming you really are Immigrant without your trip (and oh, doesn't that make me wonder what else you've been posting under the guise of anonymity?), you seem to think that all this uniqueness is apparent in the text rather than something you're forcibly projecting. And the very worst of it is, you actually get frustrated that nobody else can see it, without realising that perhaps it's because it just isn't there.

But even though they've sent the distress calls, the battle fleets just can't seem to stop fighting over an artefact known only as 'Ranskoor av Kolos'. But what exactly is it? I think it is actually, not a photoshop thing unless I'm mistaken. It reminds me of when I listened to the Verity Podcast where they were talking about Heaven Sent, and one of them was saying how bad the wig was for the Clara stand in….. Except there was no stand in. Jenna Coleman really stood there for her back to be filmed, and she wasn't wearing a "bad wig". I still occasionally crack up thinking about listening to that podcast of someone criticising Jenna Coleman's real hair as "a bad wig"

Hot take: when people say things like "Series 11 is better than a moffat series" or "Ranskoor Av Kolos is better than Wedding of River Song" what they really mean is that there were thing that they actively disliked some of Moffat's work, but dont find themselves actively disliking Chibnall's work. But that's because with Moffat's work thsre's actual meat on the bones, there's some substance to actively like or dislike.

With Series 11, a lot of people are saying "oh well at least its better than moffart" but the truth is there's just nothing there. Nothing to piss them off, but also, what is there to really enjoy?

I hope that our few remaining friends

Give up on trying to save us.

I hope we come out with a fail-safe plot

To piss off the dumb few that forgave us.

I hope the fences we mended

Fall down beneath their own weight.

And I hope we hang on past the last exit,

I hope it's already too late.
