i was hoping you'd ask that

Barton Fink > Raising Arizona > The Hudsucker Proxy > Fargo > Inside Llewyn Davis > The Man Who Wasn't There > The Ballad of Buster Scruggs > Miller's Crossing > Blood Simple > O Brother, Where Art Thou? > The Big Lebowski > Hail, Caesar!

Worth mentioning, I really enjoy all of the above listed films. The ones that I listed I either haven't seen or have only seen ages ago so I don't know how they fit in with my opinions on the rest. I'm doing a chronological rewatch so I'll be able to rank iconic ones like No Country among them, but that's one of the ones I saw ages ago. I'm watching Intolerable Cruelty tomorrow.

My favourite thing about them is their surprisingly godlike gift for physical comedy. Even back in Blood Simple they had that comical situation of the hitman with his hand stuck in the window flailing around with a knife and trying to shoot through the wall with a shotgun in his other hand. That kind of stuff isn't easy to come up with. And the best gag in Big Lebowski is the Dude trying to nail his door shut with a plank on the floor only to realise it opens the other way. And massive setpieces like that diaper chase in Rasing Arizona.

You have to do your ranking now, and make fun of mine

Hudsucker Proxy is based, glad to see it so high. I think Miller's and Blood are overrated desu, I see a lot of love for them but find them very…unCoens…they're played so straight!

Aw, you didn't like Hail, Caesar! Why??

Intolerable Cruelty is shiiiiit but maybe you'll enjoy it lol.

>I think Miller's and Blood are overrated desu

Miller's is waaaaayy too plotty for me, but I love the performances and the character that the setting has. People like it because it's a very technically talented filmmaker pretty much emulating Scorsese. Same reason people love Boogie Nights. Blood Simple is basically a mood piece but I think it's a good one and it has at least one god tier sight gag that makes me laugh every time, apart from the aforementioned window sequence.

>Aw, you didn't like Hail, Caesar! Why??

I love it! Just less than the others! Anyway there's so many jokes in it, lots of them land, but a few didn't. The musical numbers are obviously kino. The whole McCarthyism in Hollywood angle interests me greatly. But I think I'm inclined to like a movie that meanders like Caesar does less than some of their other works. But again, it's kino.

>Opinions on the Fargo show?

I love it, season 2 is the best and richest imo—it fuses themes and concepts from all Coen films really well while still being extremely original—but Season 1 is also really fun and compelling. I liked how experimental Season 3 got even by Fargo standards and David Thewlis is god tier but the season left me less satisfied than the others as a whole. I'm hyped for season 4. Before you ask I haven't seen Legion but I definitely will some time.

 No.170649

I also don't like the way Season 3 of Fargo tore apart Riley and MEW. That was such a cruel thing of her to do to me!

Also think Boogie Nights is overrated lel, latter PTA is so much superior

Yeah S2 is easily easily easily the best of the show I agree, and the way it incorperates stuff from The Man Who Wasn't There is fucking Moff-lorehandling level based. I fucking hate Noah Hawley and think Legion is absolutely fucking godawfully terrible (you might love it though!), but Fargo S2 was fantastic apart from the really dumb twist in the finale imo. S3 was messier than S1 but I liked it a lot more cause the themes were way more interesting and original imo. I liked a lot of S1 but thought it went completely off the rails and the finale was super lazy. S4 sounds cool, I like the premise.

The Moffat Proxy

In 2013, Chris Chibnall, a police procedural writer from Sheffield, arrives at BBC Studios looking for a job. He struggles due to lack of experience and becomes the writer of Broadchurch at ITV. Meanwhile, Doctor Who's showrunner and executive producer, Steven Moffat, unexpectedly commits suicide during a ratings meeting by jumping out of a top-floor window. Afterwards, Peter Harness, a ruthless member of Moffat's writing team, learns the showrunner job will be soon sold to other writers; he mounts a scheme to increase the BBC's interest in him as a showrunner by temporarily depressing the quality by hiring an incompetent showrunner, Chris Chibnall, to replace Moffat.

Jodie's a great actress, but she's a really odd choice for the Doctor. With Smith and Tennant, you could see their eccentric charisma bounce off the screen. Hurt and Eccleston had presence, and of course Capaldi is magnificent. With Jodie, like, who wanted her? Like, where was the in-built adovcacy.

Twice Upon A Time there was a new Doctor, who regenerated into an incredibly lively and warm character. This Doctor, to be more specific, is known as the Thirteenth Doctor travelling the Universe with friends who love a little bit of adventure in their lives! You may have heard of her and her companions? Yeah, that Doctor! The funny, energetic, speaks a hundred miles an hour Doctor! Isn’t she the greatest friend you could ever wish for to guide you around the universe?

A new Time Lord not only comes with a distinct personality but also a brilliant new appearance. The Thirteenth Doctor’s refreshing wardrobe includes a long, hooded trench coat, rainbow striped top, mustard colored braces, cropped wide legged trousers, laced up boots and last but not least, TARDIS blue striped socks.

These are far from boring socks. The Thirteenth Doctor’s Socks help make you walk with purpose! Hurtle across space and time wearing these cozy striped lounge socks made from a luxurious blend of heavyweight cashmere and cotton for long lasting wear.

Did you know that these comfortable socks are made by Corgi Socks in Wales, UK? They are the original makers of the actual socks worn by Jodie Whittaker in the Doctor Who TV Series, Season 11. We know how important it is to you to own the most accurate replica socks so this time around we went straight to the source! Wearing these socks you’ll now be able to walk undetectably amongst villains and creatures thanks to Corgi Socks using a traditional manufacturing method called hand linking. Their toe seam is almost undetectable achieving a beautifully comfortable sock! See? No ordinary socks here.

Don’t look any further, you’ve found the original Thirteenth Doctor’s Socks right here! Now its your turn to walk in her shoes (well, in this case her socks) and own a pair for yourself to take part in your very own thrilling and uplifting adventures full of drama, delight, scares and bags of fun!

 No.170898

"Ebony" is often associated with black people, particularly dark skinned black people, due to a number of historical influences. It's also, for example, the name of a magazine published by and for African Americans since 1945. It dates back to when "Say, you know, these here negroes can sometimes be pretty good sexual partners!" was a radical and revolutionary thing to be sharing in any company, let alone polite company. Couple that with the Black is Beautiful movement and you ended up with a very particular adjective stuck to a very particular kind of pornography.

And it is particular: "Ebony" as a porn category refers only to sex acts featuring exclusively black performers, though the performers themselves may be mixed race.

I picked it on the list because "interracial" wasn't an option.

I have a theory about Chris Chibnall and why he is obsessed with ensemble casts: it's his way of hiding the fact he can't actually write a character with any depth to save his life. Sure, he can write "characterisation" as much as the next writer can: it's not a hard task to just "write characters that have specific traits." The season opener is gratuitously peppered with minor characters that spend way more time on screen than they needed to considering the way they just die: the guy whose sister was killed who kidnaps Tim Shaw, salad guy, the granddad.

If I then look at Yaz, I realise I don't know her any better than the granddad who FaceTimes his daughter before getting killed offscreen. The "premise" of her character is summarised in that one scene in the car, and it's the fullest development of who she is as a person that we get through the entire season, even though it's literally just a character pitch. "This is who I am, this is my struggle. I'm Rose but a policewoman."

 No.170960

Sigh. Look, a lot has been written on the politics of this episode. And I won’t lie, that aspect upset me. But what upset me more than the politics themselves was the way I feel like the episode cheated to get there. And cheated by betraying the show on a fundamental level.

There’s lots of viewers I know who feel like we don’t know the character of the Thirteenth Doctor very well or feel she’s undefined. I disagree. As I’ve tried to lay out in my calling out of certain highlight moments, I do feel like I know who this Doctor is, and I cannot bring myself to believe that this Doctor (or really, any Doctor) would see a computerized assembly line murdering dozens of innocent people and TAKE ITS SIDE, brush it off and say “that’s what it’s supposed to do,” She should have been deeply, deeply hurt by Kira’s death, by all the deaths. She would have tried to appeal to Charlie’s better nature and help to redeem him, not scold him and shrug and leave him to die. But apparently Pete McTighe had an axe to grind on behalf of Amazon, and decided to do it by fucking over the character of the Doctor harder than anything since that infuriating scene in Lie of the Land, which incidentally is the only other thing in the entire 55-year history of the show that I can even begin to compare this to.

 No.170961

>>170960

I don't actually think Pete is particularly more conservative than the average liberal, I just think he's a shallow dumbass of a Whovian who's probably never thought of fridging in his life, and who thought that inverting the typical evil coorporation story would be an interesting, subversive twist, and didn't consider how that would actually play with the rest of the script. I think he's just your typical sheltered idiot rather than anyone with coherent politics, let alone coherent politics they'd like to invest their scripts with.

Ruth Wilson would be the Doctor (congratulations, Judy), and the friendship between the Doctor and the Master would be hugely emphasis- wait, Moffat did that with Missy. I think Moffat's take on the Twelve/Missy relationship genuinely might have been slightly influenced by Cross.

>"He was a white South African. He was, and he had, an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other. He was, on one hand, the epitome of what a loving stepfather could be, shone this intense spotlight of attention on me, utterly introduced me to books, all the good ones, would read to me every night. On the other hand, he was a white supremacist. Hmm.

>"And a serial adulterer, and possibly a bigamist, and a thief, and a liar – basically, probably a high-functioning psychopath. Mr Cross, Derek, became the bishop of the Livingstone ward of the Mormons. He administered the tithe fund. Then, suddenly, one day, he ran away abroad with all the money. And at the same time left us, my mum and me, for a black woman. Astonishing man. He was a cross between Captain Mainwaring and Alain Delon; a classic conman of his age.

>"So the idea of reinvention has served me as a writer, yes, changing yourself every three years. Also, the idea of one person containing the personifications of good and evil; the duality. People are scared of the fact that monsters are in a continuum with the normal, that there's no divide; too often we need 'evil' to come in from outside, rather than lifting a stone beside us. I do like to at least explore all that. People often express surprise that I'm not a psychopath. But it's not about what I want to do to other people, it's that I'm scared of what other people might do to me."

>He moved with his mother back to Bristol and became "everybody's worst adolescent. Bad kid. Expelled when I was 15, thrown out of home as well. So I signed on for five years, just squats and bands and bedsits around Bristol, and then escaped to Brighton. I'd moved on to becoming the definition of dole scum. But I did some A-levels at night school, went to Leeds to do English and theology, and all the time I was writing. I'd started when little."

rewatching Listen again. God it's such a fucking masterpiece. The scene with Twelve and Clara in Rupert's room is so perfectly done. Twelve appearing seemingly out of nowhere trying to find Wally in a different picture book series, how his entire demeanor changes when he talks to Rupert about fear being a superpower reminds me of that "from the Doctor to my son Thomas" video Capaldi did for the kid who's grandmother had just died. The tension in the room when they all turn away from the creature under the bed and it walks right up behind them for a few seconds. The slam of the door when it leaves. Twelve telling Clara not to lie to Rupert and her calling him a "big gray-haired stick insect" in response. Their character banter is usually 10/10 but they really play off each other so fucking well here. The beautiful shift of focus from Jenna to Capaldi in the background where we see the look on his face when Clara says "A soldier so brave, he doesn't need a gun. He can keep the whole world safe."

That moment in particular perfectly encapsulates all three of their characters. Rupert/Danny sees the soldier as "broken", since he doesn't have a gun. Clara is talking about the Doctor when she describes the "soldier so brave he doesn't need a gun." The Doctor, understanding this, turns from looking at Rupert to looking at her as she says "he can keep the whole world safe."

Fucking brilliant writer. Taking what would be a throwaway monster-of-the-week episode and filling it with such character-building and pathos.

Something like how Star Trek gave the Rick and Morty guy his own canonical comedy show is much worse for how the franchise exists in the eyes of people going forwards, because even if it turns out to be too entertaining to be the "worst" part of the franchise it still sending a message by catering to a certain perception of the show in order to lampoon it.

Chibnall Who is a complete fucking void, but on the plus side this "pillar of hope" rubbish is so vague and dull that I can't see it ever sticking with Doctor Who beyond the Chibnall era. Jodie brought literally nothing to the role and never once saw it as anything other than a job in convinced. Think about how Matt Smith watched fucking black and white episodes from 50 years ago just to get a feel for the show and what that ended up doing for his performance, David Tennant obviously cared by virtue of being a fan and capaldi understood the character so well, rivaled only by moff in pure inherent understanding of how the character should be portrayed on the screen. >As a target for satire, all of this feels more relevant and tightly focused than last series’ Oxygen, an otherwise excellent story that somewhat overreached itself by attempting to take down the entirety of late Western capitalism. And besides, McTighe’s script is so fast and funny – a Doctor Who romp in the very best sense – that it never feels too much like a lecture. ‘Doctor Who in An Exciting Adventure with Zero-Hours Contracts’, anyone?

>In an otherwise enthusiastically received episode, Charlie’s unmasking as the villain of the piece was met with some grumbling online by people wondering if Doctor Who siding with the intergalactic megacorp over the disgruntled workers sends quite the right message. But we were left in no doubt that the system needed to change, and would change. Plus, I’m sure we can all agree that mass murder is rarely conducive to good industrial relations.

>The big surprise here wasn’t so much who the antagonist was, as who it wasn’t. Because if my I-Spy Book of Doctor Who Baddies has taught me anything, it’s that a big-name guest star with funny specs and a space clipboard–think Sarah Lancashire in Partners in Crime, Keeley Hawes in Time Heist, Reece Shearsmith in Sleep No More– is generally going to be up to no good. But no, it turns out Judy Maddox, delightfully played with a mixture of warmth and comic fluster by Corrie legend Julie Hesmondhalgh, really was just a mildly frazzled HR manager trying her best to help people make the best of a bad situation.

If Chib kills Doctor Who we can at least hope he takes down DWM with it

What's up with Ryan's static facial expression? In all seriousness, it might be a dyspraxia thing.

Jodie totally looked like she was ripping off Tennant when she spun aorund then, sorry.

Is 13's hair CGI?

 No.171305

Chris Chibnall is a genious, the decrease in quality between everything Chibnall has written and series 11 is intentional. The audience isn't meant to be people who care much about it as art anymore, it's the people who want something relatable. Every main character in the series is undeveloped just enough that you can project yourself onto them. BBC and Chibnall want to get the ratings and viewing figures that Tennant had, Doctor Who is meant to event television now. The gap year isn't simple incompetence it's to get the viewer always wanting more, same reason for the decrease in episodes. It carries a veil of pretending to comment on socual issues to look important but it's all hollow. The emptiness is by design BBC and Chib don't want to make a statement, that can scare viewers away, there's a reason only the guest writer episodes have something under the surface.
