I had a thought about the David Bradley Doctor - given the casting came from a ' 'docudrama' ' first, a dramatisation of real world events, does he represent a kind of breaking down of the barriers between Doctor Who's fictional universe and a more real, meta universe? How can we read this in light of The Mind Robber? What precedent is there for the show to draw on the real world in this way? Does Dimensions in Time factor in? I'd love to hear all your thoughts!

Definitely. That's why in TUAT Bradley made the bold, and let me just say ingenious, decision NOT to portray the first Doctor, but instead act as the notoriously bigoted William "Heartless" Hartnell.

Fun fact, the producer was none other than Matt Strevens!

>>175054

I've thought similarly as far back as seeing the Five Doctors as a kid even though I couldn't articulate it back then, sometime when I got older and understood the history of the show more it struck me how retroactive the show's continuity is and why while there's obvious merit to putting the early eras of the show into the lorebox later eras devised, it's good to remember they weren't actually confined to those. 1 and 2 weren't even from Gallifrey.

God, I am so sorry to hear that. I can't imagine what it's like. It must be so persistently frustrating and disappointing. Are there any series that do meaningful representation well that you enjoy? Maybe related: I've always liked how Jack - the lead character! - and Inato's relationship together on Torchwood is played straight (yeah yeah), played sweetly, and understated in that there's no huge drama spun out of it as if it's abnormal or even novel. It just is, and it's lovely, and it's normal in the context of the show. I was 12 when I first saw Torchwood, and I think of all the other 12 year olds who saw it back then, and I hope it had a positive normalising impact on some of us.

It was on the planet Gallifrey that my old friend the Doctor was suddenly put on trial. They say he reacted violently, as his list of virtuous deeds was read, and sentence postponed. For one thing, it’s been commented a lot that ads sold something substantially different tonally from the actuality of this series, with a lot of people focusing to the kaleidoscopic color of one promotional poster in comparison to the heavy, stripped-down grays and browns that dominated much of this year. I think that dichotomy is a bit much, but there’s definitely a jarring difference between the magic promised and the magic actually seen.

Yeah, I'm thinking Downtime's based.

>When your opponent acts out of good intent, when their actions are only mildly harmful, this is a reasonable, kind philosophy. However, when you face a genocidal madman like Tzim Sha, mercy becomes nothing more than a self-aggrandizing impulse. It makes you feel good. The Doctor’s politics, then, become smug superiority — or, to use an overused but rather useful term, virtue signaling. This is a universe of Daleks. To save the universe, they must be destroyed. The “do I have a right?” moral handwaving might have been permissible in 1974, but nowadays pop culture has to act simultaneously as activism. Doctor Who has immense reach, and the opportunity to encourage a generation of young children to stand up for what’s right. Instead, it proposes that you have to follow the lead of enlightened authority figures. From series 1-10 of NuWho, the companions have always had the power to shut the Doctor down when they’re wrong. Donna demanded he save a family in “The Fires of Pompeii.” Clara thoroughly dressed him down in both “Kill the Moon” and in “Hell Bent.” This series, Ryan has been chastened for shooting a robot, Graham has been told that he’ll be no better than a GENOCIDAL MURDERER if he kills the aforementioned killer, and Yaz… hasn’t had a personality, has she?

>Falling = 13 falls from the TARDIS / Tim Shaw falls from the crane

>Monument = The TARDIS / The Ruins

>Insurrection = The Spiders killing people / Robertson killing The Brood Mother / 13 locking the Spiders in the bunker

>Kerblam! = Kerblam! Corporation / Charley wanting to kill people with explosives / bubble wrap

>Buried = The Morax being under Pendle Hill / The old lady / the mud

>Mirror = A literal mirror / mirror world

>The Woman Who Fell to Earth

The TARDIS not appearing was sort of neat

>The Ghost Monument

I'm going to say the intro, because technically that wasn't in the first episode and I can't think of anything positive about this episode off the top of my head.

>Rosa

Having the tact to make the plot about the Doctor making sure history happens how it's supposed to, rather than have her somehow be responsible for Rosa's actions in the first place.

>Arachnids in the UK

This is harder than I expected because the episodes are so forgettable. There are moments of each episode I've liked but I don't remember them now. Oh, I liked the line where the Doctor wasn't sure if she was dating Yaz. That was cute/funny.

>The Tsuranga Conundrum

The little monster. It was cute and the CGI actually looked decent for once.

>Demons of the Punjab

A historical set in a non-western country (and almost being a historical) for once was refreshing.

>Kerblam!

Had a fun/consistent aesthetic.

>The Witchfinders

Alan Cumming

>It Takes You Away

THE FROG

>The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos

Graham taking the Doctor aside to tell her he's going to kill Tim Shaw.

>Resolution

The Doctor's scarf. (I know this episode isn't out yet, but let's be honest, that will be the best part)

Question for English first language speakers who choose to have subtitles - how do you reconcile the fact that your eyes are drawn to that text in a visual medium where directors often take pains to direct your gaze to specific places in the frame? Is it a question of being skilled in multitasking? Or do you selectively ignore subtitles when the info in the frame seems more important?

>your eyes are drawn to that text in a visual medium where directors often take pains to direct your gaze to specific places in the frame

This isn't how it really happens for me. Perhaps it did when I first started to use subtitles regularly, I can't remember, but I don't specifically look down at the subtitles. They're just like…absorbed? While I'm looking at whatever part of the frame makes most sense.

I was in one of my classes where we have desks in rows. Without looking, I reached backwards to my bag, which was on the floor, and started picking it up when I noticed it was heavy and oddly shaped. I look behind me and it’s someone’s foot. I was lifting their foot up higher and higher and they were too awkward to say anything so they just slowly started sliding down in their seat as I lifted their leg higher. I immediately let go when I noticed them and apologized. It was an awkward situation for all.
