They went beyond overboard with the gimmicky shit in 3. Probably the most annoying additional mechanics I've ever seen in a platformer. Not a single member of the expanded heist team has a moveset or playstyle as fun as Sly. So you have a situation where you get to have fun playing as Sly Cooper like 40% of the time in a fucking SLY COOPER game. 4, with all its faults, at least made sure that all the additional characters still play like Sly Cooper (since they're all his ancestors), so even with the gimmicky shit you still get to play as "Sly" the majority of the time.

The 1DAs are interesting because they're like an AU take on starting Doctor Who, not just an emulation of Hartnell era. Going more alt-universe is more interesting and has more creative longevity as there comes a time where basically everything BF can mine from an actual era is mined.

>None of these actors [in the 1DAs] are doing impersonations of the original actors. What they're doing is playing these parts as written. And, you know, we've written them - our brilliant writers, you know, Matt Fitton [sic], John Dorney, and, uh, Andrew Smith, and, uhm, Guy Adams - sorry Guy, how could I forget you, I'm just old and forgetful…uhm, they've written these greats scripts that the style, very much in the style of the First Doctor Adventures, and the cast are coming to it, ah, and playing the parts as written. Written in that very faithful way. So, you know, you're not going to listen to it and think 'Goodness me, I thought that was William Hartnell' - no, you'll hear someone playing the First Doctor character, uh, s-perhaps a slightly different i-interpretation. And with all the other characters as well! I think there will be moments when you think 'Oh yes, yes, this is exac-I recognise that', but this is the sort of new way of looking at it. We just thought it'd be fun and exciting thing. We've been trying to do it for ages but, as it gets mentioned in interviews coming up in future podcasts, David Bradley is so busy, really, uh-th-so we were trying to do these even before, uhm, the Christmas special was mooted. Was, you know, just a coincidence! When they t-, when the BBC finally said 'ooh, and David Bradley is gonna be in the Christmas special, tis top secret', we said 'Oh? You're g-oh! We were already going to do something like that', but anyway, it all worked out very nicely.

>Briggs: "What's fascinating about the cast and their performances is that they're not impersonating William Hartnell and his TARDIS crew. They're playing those parts as written in the scripts. No one can replace the brilliance of those original performances. What we're presenting here is a kind of reinvention of that era, completely in the spirit of the original. They are new but entirely faithful interpretations of these characters."

Oh, and regarding the Invention of Death -

>no real villain

>genuinely interesting SF concept the whole story revolves around

>explores original alien society in detail and with great consideration to societal differences

>extremely comfy moments (Ian/Barbara chemistry, 1/Ian/Barbara/Susan campfire singalong)

>resists doing continuity references that would have been extremely easy to indulge in

>capitalising on Ian and Barbara's jobs in ways to evolve the story

>entire story is interconnected, the climax/twist a natural evolution of the worldbuilding

>1 in full experimenter/inventor mode

>doesn't shy away from sex

>very memorable premise all round

yeah, it's GOAT.

It's still bizarre to me that a Doctor lost their sight in their last season but instead of holding out a few episodes for the regeneration, it got magically undone.  No.176777

>>176770

It's a very very very 2016 story and I always appreciate Doctor Who being timely (one of my main issues with S11 is how utterly alienated it is from 2018). I adore Harness' style and there are a lot of Harnessisms in the script, especially in the absurd parts (I think the script struggles because it's too constrained into being political thriller whereas Harness' other eps let those elements bubble in more naturally with his other concerns). While I think the ending completely fucks it, I enjoyed how the episode brought the issue of consent (which had been running low through Capaldi's era and then quite high in S10 previously) to the fore. While I hate the circumstances of it, I appreciate that is a failure/bad ending. There's some lovely late stage Moffatisms in it too (the opening rumination of 12 over the end of the world, the lab intercuts).

>Yeah it's a very clear "Moff running on fumes in the series he didn't want to/plan on making" thing.

Well personally I think S10 is one of Moffat's best, and it's probably my personal favourite overall, so I reject your words.

Having said that, the Extremis trilogy is like that game you play as a kid where you write a story with friends by folding the paper before handing it over so that the next person can only read the previous sentence.

>>176781

>Harness writing a 13 script would be utterly insane

To be honest I find it difficult to imagine what any of the regulars episodes would look like under Chibnall, just because the tone of the show feels so Different in a way I can't fully articulate. A S11 Moffat episode is unthinkable, for example. I'd kill to see RTD or Moffat write for S12 though. Just because I'm so curious how post-showrunner writing would even work.

 No.176785

>>176784

I love series ten too friend, what I mean more is that it's a fact Moffat planned to leave after Series 9+~Husbands, it's very easy to read Series 9 as his final word on Who, and he publicly had struggles with Series 10 (like losing his mum). I know there's a lot specific to series 10 (Bill, Nardole, Missy stuff) people love, and I love most of that too, I just think a lot of the series shows cracks in it being something made to keep the show going for a year when Chibnall was too busy to takeover.

Good description of the Monk trilogy. I get what Moff was trying to do in connecting unconnected episodes by giving the same villain and adding some continuity but yeah. Imagine if we'd had two other eps instead of Pyramid and Lie.

Cornell gushes over s11 so much on twitter i bet he'd beg (or has begged) to write for 13.

DOCTOR: It's safer.

BILL: Not so much for the people the Monks are killing.

DOCTOR: The Romans killed people and saved billions more from disease, war, famine and barbarism.

BILL: No, wait. What about free will? You believe in free will. Your whole thing is. You made me write a three thousand word essay on free will.

DOCTOR: Yes, well, I mean, you had free will, and look at what you did with it. Worse than that, you had history. History was saying to you, look, I've got some examples of fascism here for you to look at. No? Fundamentalism? No? Oh, okay, you carry on. I had to stop you, or at least not stand in the way of someone else who wanted to, because the guns were getting bigger, the stakes were getting higher, and any minute now it was going to be goodnight, Vienna. By the way, you never delivered that essay, anyway.

BILL: Because the world was invaded by zombie Monks!

DOCTOR: And whose fault was that, huh? I didn't ask for my sight back. No, you took it upon yourself to ignore me, to do what you thought was best. All I can say is that we are lucky it was a benevolent race like the Monks, not the Daleks. Yes, I know the Monks are ruthless. I get that. The Missy thing drives me nuts. Lie of the Land feels like it was perfectly setting this up, but then it ruins everything with the LE EPIC PRANK. The Doctor should've been genuinely brainwashed/compromised by the Monks, making Nardole desperate enough to actually release Missy. Bill, having never met her, would've given her the benefit of the doubt which would be an interesting dynamic, like the Clara/Missy relationship except if Clara didn't know she was evil. And then Missy could save the Doctor and becomes a companion for a couple of episodes.

I love the finale but it's a bit unsatisfying that on Missy's very first venture into companionhood she is met with an impossible to resist temptation.

>We could have had a Turn Left esque episode about that sort of thing, but with the Doc not interfering.

It's fun to think about but I think it would be nearly impossible to pull off in a TV episode. But I'm a bit surprised they didn't at least try, or reference the election, considering the finale.

But yeah, a more cohesive approach to the Time War would've been much better. Or, if they insist on having these separate lines, at least have them all lead into a story together.  No.176932

I saw Planet of the Dead, thought it was pretty cool. Then I saw ABC reruns of Series 4, starting with Planet of the Ood (I saw the first two eps a bit later). Planet of the Ood was probably when the affinity really started, as I was delighted by how heavy and fucked up it could be. The Ood transformation scene particularly had an impact, I thought that was terrifying and fantastic. (Still creeps me out a bit desu) I then watched Series 4 week after week and after it was over I went back and watched all of NuWho.

Thoughts on these quotes /who/?

>"Nerd culture is the product of a late capitalist conspiracy, designed to infantalize the consumer as a means of non-aggressive control."

- S. Pegg

>"The movies are for children but they don't want to admit it. There's a small group of fans that do not like comic sidekicks. They want the films to be tough like The Terminator and they get very upset and opinionated about anything that has anything to do with being childlike."

- G. Lucas

>"SW ate the heart and the soul of Hollywood. It created the big-budget comic book mentality."

- P. Schrader

>"A 12yo boy told me proudly that he had seen SW over a 100 times? I said 'could you promise never to see it again?' He burst into tears. I just hope the lad, now in his 30s, isn't living in a fantasy world of secondhand childish banalities"

- A. Guinness

>"I don't think they are making [comic book movies] an elevated art form, I think it's still just Batman running around in a stupid cape. It's for kids, it's adolescent in its core."

- D. Cronenberg

>"I don't want to see or make films about super heroes that fly around in spandex and a cape solving the problems of the world. I think it's fine for children, children of all ages by the way, but it's not for me."

- W. Friedkin

>“They have been poison, this cultural genocide, Because the audience is so overexposed to plot and explosions and shit that doesn’t mean nothing about the experience of being human.”

- A. Iñárritu

>"Superman makes me vomit, Batman and all of that. That whole empire, this religion… It is so important that superheroes suffer… I don't give a damn, I shit on the United States."

- A. Jodorowsky

>"To my mind, this embracing of what were unambiguously children's characters at their mid-20th century inception seems to indicate a retreat from the admittedly overwhelming complexities of modern existence"

- Alan Moore

Yeah, I think it’s a good idea to give notable and/or amusing /who/ events their own pages. It’s always good to have as many articles on /who/ stuff as possible, to counter the utter fuckton of countless unfunny Uncyclopedia/Encyclopedia Dramatica-esque pages on random Big Finish audios that don’t even mention /who/ once that CyberKrail made. And, yeah, I think the reason we haven’t been doing that as much recently is simply because we seem to have lost interest ever since the migration. We don’t make pages on thread events anymore, and no S11 episode after Demons even has a page yet. Although that might also have something do with how utterly tedious that Series is.

Yeah I agree, I was just wondering cause arguably there's been stuff lately that might be funny/interesting to write pages on, or even just screencap.
