Whatever /who/ says, I really liked Jodie's performance. From her talking down to Krasko, to her monologue with the frog, her awkwardness at Yaz's family household, her calm steel while bluffing with Ribbons, to her "I don't know anyone by that description" scene in Rosa they were all good scenes–even the finale had a good 13 scene with her "How could a god know me?" Jodie certainly performed well, as far as I'm concerned, and her 13th Doctor showed nuances beyond what /who/ sometimes gives her.

I feel like it's one of those weird social class dynamics. To separate themselves from the fashions of the middle class, upper class folks start wearing trashy looking clothes (because no one's going to mistake them for being genuinely poor, whereas middle class people might not be able to get away with it). And then it trickles down and rich people start wearing fancy clothes again. Idk clothing is a shitty example, maybe it'd be better to point at something like neoreaction becoming initially popular among a subset of folks in traditionally blue areas so they can be "cool" despite complete unwillingness to engage with the US' white lower class core of conservatism. Folks like Sandifer get away with hating on S11 because, god, ``obviously`` she's not one of the gamer outrage tubers, whereas some random anon on literal 8chan…

Basically what I'm trying to say is that maybe liking S11 is the true galaxy brain above us all.

In the aftermath, when Loz was getting widely shat on and cancelled from "About Time" etc etc, Shearman … well, I'll let Loz tell it.

>According to the Word on the Streets (which is to say, those theoretical streets which seem to be inhabited solely by Doctor Who fans dressed like Huggy Bear), Moffat's promotion to the executive level means that Rob Shearman is likely to be invited back in from the cold, after falling out with the production team in 2005. Rob - one of the few Doctor Who writers I've met who seems to find the power-game of pro-level fandom as ridiculous as I do, and therefore one of the few I genuinely like as a person - is an interesting case, because after the "Unquiet Dead" review, he positively demanded that I disembowel "Dalek" in the same way. I never did, but inviting criticism is probably the healthiest thing that someone in his position can do: any decent writer should know, instinctively, that he can't expect to inflict his work on hundreds / thousands / millions of people and keep his ego intact.

I've always wanted to know more about Shearman's "falling out" with the production team, but information is strangely hard to find. That or I just suck

That's an interesting take, I hadn't thought of that before. So, in your image of what Doctor Who could have been like, is 3's era not seen as the odd one out but rather just one of several different formats for the show? Because as it stands now there's basically only two: travel around time and space with varied adventures, and stick in one spot. What you wanted with 5 was something new, to help break the mould and establish the format as mercurial?

Or am I misunderstanding

>So, in your image of what Doctor Who could have been like, is 3's era not seen as the odd one out but rather just one of several different formats for the show?

Exactly exactly exactly, yeah. I think the concept is too big and too good to limit down to basically the same structure we've done for decades. I do think Pertwee's era and Trial were genuinely different things though. There's EU material that pushes it too. I'd have been fine with Davison 5 if at least the show around him was different. I know this idea is bad but something political on Gallifrey for a series could've been interesting. Or the Doctor gets stuck on some fantasyish planet and has a fantasy series. Or the show goes like a cop procedural. Or something inventive that's not just copying another genre. There's so much room for it.

That sounds great, to be honest. But it would be a slog to try and establish that now, since the current format has dominated the show for so long. I've had similar ideas in the past. I think the Doctor as a lecturer concept was neat in S10, and when the show is finally cancelled and brought back I'd like to see that again. But instead of hopping into the TARDIS at the end of the episode, the season follows the companion and the Doctor is treated as an unknown entity, which the companion slowly learns more about. Basically Bill slowly discovering the TARDIS, etc. but stretched across an entire season with alien invasions and all that.

Or even just the current format but instead of hopping planets so quickly the Doctor sticks around and every new setting has 2 or 3 distinctly separate plotlines. That would be a good chance for some solid worldbuilding and fleshing out secondary characters.

I REALLY DO NOT RECOMMEND READING THE PRESS RELEASE FOR THE BOXSET DESU

I WILL REPOST THE NON SPOILERY THINGS

Set for release in January 2020, The Sins of Captain John will see Captain John Hart leading the universe into rack and ruin in four new adventures…

The Restored

Escape from Nebazz

Peach Blossom Heights

Darker Purposes

In these stories we’ll find the villainous anti-hero thriving in Restoration London, exploring gas planets, playing ‘Stepford wife' and kissing (then killing) countless victims… Just a day in the life of a rogue Time Agent!

Writer, David Llewellyn, tells us what to expect: “Writing The Death of Captain Jack was a total blast, and both James Goss (producer of the Torchwood range) and I realised we could have a lot more fun with Captain John Hart, providing James Marsters was happy to return.

“Captain John is this chaotic, disruptive, insubordinate force of nature; completely amoral and unpredictable, so that gave me a lot of freedom! Writing is often a case of knowing when to hold back, when to tread a more subtle line, but with Captain John it’s the complete opposite. And setting it before Torchwood on television meant we were able to go to places where Torchwood can’t.”

Torchwood fans will also find answers to some of the questions and plot points that have so far been left hanging from the beginning of the television show. More details on this in the future…

Human beings have a natural attraction to girls who are going through puberty. I've always been kinda disappointed how we had spoilers for almost that entire episode come out months before it aired, but for some reason the spoilers left out the entire aspect of the Crack returning and implied the Doctor's regeneration in the clocktower was it. So the "what's wrong? it's only a crack in the wall" moment legitimately made me gasp when the episode finally aired, as well as the real regeneration in the TARDIS having that much more impact.

GOD THAT'S SO FUCKING BASED

There are some bookending elements with 12 but they're a lot less literal. 12 accidentally compares Half-Face Man to himself while arguing that he should just commit suicide; 12 ends up trying to commit suicide. Deep Breath ends with the Nethersphere; TUAT has a comparable kind of digital afterlife ("heaven on New Earth").

If TDF had been 12's ending as originally proposed, you could very easily link the clockwork droids using human parts to the Cybermen.

I cured my son of the Big Gay. The other day, he came home for Christmas with his new partner. I was excited to meet her (and maybe MEAT her after my son fell asleep hehe), but imagine my horror when it turned out to be another man.

I immediately started to protest, but my son said "Dad, this is who I am. Zander and I are in love."

Without missing a beat, I turned around and said, "You forgot to say no homo."

But my boy simply scoffed at me and said, "Actually, dad, I AM a homosexual. That's right, your son is in love with another man." Then my son grabbed Zander's hand and looked at me defiantly.

For a second, I was utterly devastated. But then I thought to myself *What would Trump do?* So I stared straight at my son, penetrating his soul with my eyes (no homo), and said, "But that's gay."

As soon as I uttered those fateful words, my son began to convulse. He dropped to floor in some sort of manic state, spit pouring from his mouth as his eyes rolled back into his head. Zander tried to help him, but I pushed that dainty little queer away with my heteronormative strength.

After a full minute, my son opened his eyes and said, "Dad, you cured me of my homosexuality." Then, with manly tears of joy in his eyes, he pointed to Zander and exclaimed, "Let's get that homo!"

After we wiped Zander's blood off our hands and threw the little fairy into the cold, my son and I sat down with a beer and watched some football.

As we watched, my son turned to me and said, "Dad, I love you. No homo."

"No homo indeed, son," I replied. "No homo indeed."

it's literally the point. The only companion that wasn't relateable was Clara in S9 but that was intentional on Moffat's part and casuals hated it.

Also do these people think "relateable" means "human from modern-day Earth that has physical qualities found in a majority of the fanbase and is the asking-questions one"? Because on a surface level, I have fucking nothing in common with Bill. I'm not gay, black, or a woman. She's still a relateable character.

Shit, even the Doctor was fucking relateable in the RTD/Moffat eras. I rewatched The Girl in the Fireplace the other day and that episode's entire emotional arc is carried by Ten. We feel and learn everything in that episode as he feels and learns them. It's why that ending works so well. The sudden revelation that Ten fucked up right at the end and missed Renaitte by two hours, only to arrive after her death, hits like a fucking sledgehammer to the heart. Heaven Sent/Hell Bent works because we feel what the Doctor feels after Clara's death. Rage. Wanting her back. Wanting revenge.

Thirteen isn't relateable at all. Not because she's a Time Lord, the past 5 (and War) of those have all been relateable. It's not because she's a woman, since all the companions in Series 1-10 were women and still relateable. It's because there's nothing about her to relate to. No personality traits, no mannerisms. Nothing. I half-jokingly said in the thread last night that Jodie's best piece of acting in Series 11 was her reaction to the Fez reappearing out of nowhere in Kerblam!, but honestly that was Thirteen's first genuinely relateable moment. The shock and joy on her face was (well, not to that extent) felt in the audience.

The Testimony is all about reconstructing people based on their memories while the Doctor's got his own reconstruction of Clara based on the hole she left in his memory; there's a very interesting contrast there. The whole "reconstructing things from the hole they've left" thing was brought up a few times during Moffat's era and it would make sense if TUAT was intended to play around with it.

i stopped watching when Peter Capaldi took over, saw there was some forced diversity that hit the series hard, that caused me to not go back and buy the box sets for anything past series 7, is it worth buying?

there are so many pissed fans its hard to get a straight answer that isn't either a libtard pushing an agenda, or an angry fan who is just trying to scream about the forced diversity.

it's on Amazon Prime Instant Video, which is much better quality than Netflix and has some bonus features/episodes of Confidental depending on the series. The only bad thing is that Prime Instant Video classifies each season of a show as its own thing, which also means the Christmas specials/50th anniversary specials/2009 specials are their own "shows", so instead of the end of Name of the Doctor immediately popping up with "next episode: Day of the Doctor" it treats Deep Breath like the following episode which is probably confusing as fuck for new viewers. But if you just keep that in mind and use the list of episodes on wikipedia as a guide you'll be able to watch it in order.

Capaldi is the best actor to take on the role (with the exception of John Hurt) and I think most /who/res have Twelve as their favorite Doctor. Just bear in mind that Twelve's characterization at the start of Series 8 is very different from 9/10/11. He's a bit of a cunt. But it's intentional, and his character arc from Series 8 through Series 10 is him figuring out what it means to be a good man and becoming more and more "Doctory" in each series. By Series 9 he's pretty much "normal" by Doctor standards, so if you don't like his Doctor in Series 8 because of how genuinely mean he gets just keep watching. He gets happy-go-lucky again after that series.

I don't want to sound like one of those "it's too early to judge! it's only his first series!" but I'm still holding out hope that Chibnall somehow does a complete 180 quality wise next series just like RTD inexplicably going from the first halves of Series 3 and 4 being garbage (with 1 or 2 exceptions) and the second halves being pure kino (with 1 or 2 exceptions, mainly the last part of the finale).

Then again, at least RTD proved himself with Series 1 before dropping the ball with Series 2. And all he had to do to go from shit to kino was to write better scripts. The foundations in the cast and crew was already solid. The Chibnall-era is kinda fucked on a foundational level. It'll take a lot of work for Series 12 to be kino, and I don't think Chibnall feels Series 11 was flawed enough to make any changes.

How DARE you be hopeful in any way for the Chibnall era? Do that again and I will be forced to reply to your post with ‘cringe and bluepilled’.

 No.179361

I genuinely believe it is too early to judge chibnall's merit as a showrunner, because we have no idea where he is going to go from here. Broadchurch showed that he is capable of writing series' with different purposes. If they are actually resolving ryan's deadbeat dad issues in the new years episode, that wraps up every character plot introduced in S11 - which means chibnall will have a blank slate for S12 and has to do something new

You are setting yourselves up for disappointment. Ten episodes is enough to judge. The man is not going to change. You've heard him. He had no ideas when he became showrunner. He hasn't got some masterplan. Series 11 wasn't a testing ground before he got to the true kino. This is what his show is. Series 12 was written before the reaction to Series 11, and the reaction to Series 11 was positive! Acting like Series 11 was stuffed with something to cover before something new could be tried is acting like Series 11 was doing something at all, and a few episodes having Graham and Ryan interact coolly isn't that.
