>I should say something about Sarah Sutton. While Matthew Waterhouse has grown into a rather wonderful and creative person, edging back into the spotlight as he did so, and Janet Fielding is now a kick-arse activist hero, Sutton remains a slightly distant mystery. Her reserve is only slightly explored in these documentaries. She’s just being her, just being everyday, but who is that? I had an enormous crush on her back in the day. I was fourteen. I recall being on a caravan holiday with my family, reading in the newspaper that she was leaving the show. My little heart was broken. At the Longleat Celebration the following year, my friend Miles Booy, from a panel audience asked her ‘what she was doing that evening’. She told him. I was curled up in a ball, unable to speak. But here she is, weirdly now about the same age I am. In the studio footage of filming these stories, which is presented on these discs in largely unedited chunks, it’s odd to see her having fun animatedly with her friends between takes…

ah, there goes shagger again

Stephen Moffat was a shame. While Russell the show runner it was great and Moffat wrote some scripts during that time and they were really good episodes, but he was an awful show runner (imo). Once Russell left the quality of stories went downhill for me

 No.181069

I got pretty burned out by Moffatt's writing and gave up during Capaldi. I came back for Whittaker, and I want to like her, but the writing it always subpar. Capaldi was also fine, but the series lacks direction.

I think Jenna Coleman should have become the Doctor after Matt Smith. She got mixed into his timeline, Clara should have died and the Doctor takes her form because she's inside him, then we find out the amazing Oswin from the Dalek Asylum and the Christmas episode was actually the Doctor all along, because Clara was never as cool as she was.

Eccleston was the best.

I had a full page explanation of it at the time(A very long email I sent to a friend), but yes, it is an awesome idea. I'm actually surprised I could explain it so quickly; I looked at it after I typed it and said, damn, that actually sums it all up.

I'm okay with weaker effects and lower budgets to an extent, because I feel like it forces producers and writers to be more creative and rely on plot and characters, which are much more important to me… but sometimes they do look too cheesy. I remember some 8' tall alien from the drought episode, and when he walked everything above the actors shoulders wobbled, that was awful.

Also, it's not like the current crop of writers seem all that focused on stories that make sense, either. They need to hire some Canadian writers, Canadian sci-fi is the best low-effects sci-fi.

 No.181070

I left during Capaldi too, the writing is shockingly poor, but it doesn’t hold a candle to how shoddy the effects are.

The BBC REEEAAAAALLY need to up the budget for Dr. Who; when the likes of Netflix and Amazon are producing Sci-Fi series like The Expanse and the new Star Trek, Dr. Who is left looking like an undergrad uni production.

I’ve seen a huge amount of amateur film makers produce far better visual effects than Dr. Who and they aren’t backed by a national broadcasting company. It’s honestly just embarrassing.

 No.181071

Yeah it's hella cheesey. When I first watched it I couldn't believe that this was the oh so popular TV show that everyone freaks out over. It's basically on the cheese level of the original Star trek series. I couldn't ever get into it.

 No.181072

I have tried to watch Doctor Who before, but it feels so… low budget. Production qualities on par with the in between theater scenes from MST3K. Is this intentional? I thought the show was very popular.

do these people not remember the first episode of the reboot that was actually supposed to appeal to new audiences who were completely unfamilliar with Doctor Who brought back the Autons? As well as the 3 Dalek episodes in Series 1.

Audiences aren't going to see a Dalek or Cyberman and be like "i don't know what that is, this show is hostile to me (the audience) and i shall stop watching immediately." They don't need to be explained. We've had 10 series of the revival to catch people up. The only major things from Classic Who that haven't been covered by nuWho are Time Lord/Gallifrey related (Romana, Rani, & Omega).

I'm genuinely curious as to what percentage of the audience has never seen the show before. Ratings are fairly similar to Series 1-10, so I can't imagine it's that many.

10 years ago tonight i had a dream about the 2008 christmas special. the doctor was on jabba's sail barge but it was full of sontarans, and then another barge comes in full of cybermen and miss hartigan.

it's weird, i still have those kinds of dreams to this day, where i experience a future episode i'm hyped for in first person and then in the dream i feel disappointed and genuinely believe i've just watched it.

the one i had for the series 11 premiere was basically a ytp where chris chibnall keeps interrupting his own episode and just laughing really hard. i remember loving it and feeling it was really transgressive tv.

 No.181330

The episode includes a cameo appearance of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald, as the Doctor's memories of Clara, lost during "Hell Bent", are restored. The scene was the last to be filmed for the episode and while Coleman was willing to come back to film, timing between the filming of this special and her work in Victoria was difficult to arrange. Moffat said "How many times have I killed that girl off and she was right there in my last shot! It's absolutely extraordinary. The unkillable Coleman!"

That's about my conclusion, yeah. Wrote about it on Reddit recently:

>The show is going on another year-long hiatus before S12. Will a year's worth of hindsight be kind to S11? Its average AI is already more than a full point below anything we saw with Capaldi, with four separate episodes sitting on or below the magical 80 line that was only crossed once in S8-10. I expect that when Doctor Who does finally come back in 2020, we'll be looking at numbers a lot closer to S10 than S9, and frankly I wouldn't be surprised if they were actually worse.

>>181329

I've only ever had one Who dream, actually, and it was fairly recently. I was playing a companion in a finale story with Tim Shaw, but Capaldi was still the Doctor. Of course in the dream I completely forgot all my lines, so with the power of scenery chewing I ended up improvising a completely different ending to the episode that I thought was significantly more compelling. In the end Capaldi was really pissed at me though.

Kill The Moon definitely isn't as bad as it's made out to be (Clara finally breaking and laying into Twelve at the end is enough to keep it from being anywhere near Fear Her-tier) but it's definitely not a hidden masterpiece or whatever. The ideas and concepts are good and interesting, but Harness just can't into pacing at all. It's like he has all the right ingredients, but doesn't know how to put them all together into an engaging episode.

>tfw Moff pulled off two completely spectacular and instantly memorable TARDIS introduction back to fucking back in Snowmen and Bells

 No.181554

i can't even be angry about chibnall getting rid of christmas specials because i know the only reason i'm really upset is that there'll never be another capaldi christmas special

 No.181555

I don't remember Edge of Destruction being half as surreal as it is

 No.181556

talk me out of buying a wii u by using a doctor who analogy

 No.181557

>>181553

Bells is def his weakest, but that's only because of the context of the scene in the episode (the Doctor doesn't have time to explain anything to Clara so she gets the 5 second "crash course") and in the context of the series as a whole since Clara already had a TARDIS introduction of sorts so doing it again would've been repetitive.

If I had to rank them:

>Amy/the viewer at the end of The Eleventh Hour

>Clara/the viewer in The Snowmen

>Twelve in Husbands

>Bill in The Pilot

>Clara in Bells of St John

I can't remember if Rory had one, and Danny's was just him kinda poking his head in while still processing finding out about Clara/Twelve.

buying the Moffat-era on DVD instead of blu-ray

>>181558

but the wii u is cheap and you have the entire wii library as well, and with a simple hack to flip a switch you have the entire gamecube library too (and I don't have any of those consoles)

I'm holding off on the switch until a console revision, which is probably due next year

They thought it was too weird, especially for what was a Christmas Carol adaptation. I can't imagine ever explaining why Rory was dressed as a Centurion.

Twice Upon a Time was borderline nonsensical to casual fans who have watched the previous 10 series, I can't imagine what it'd be like to watch it as your first episode of the show.

Then again my first "real" (I remember being in the room when my dad watched it as a kid and I caught the end of The Lazarus Experiment the night before) episode of Doctor Who was a marathon of End of Time Part 1 & 2 and I somehow was not only able to understand most of what was happening based on context clues and just paying attention as the episodes went on, but I got so invested in it that I cried at like 3 separate points in part 2. I went back and rewatched S1-4 before S5 aired and now I'm here.

wait I just realized

>new viewers who started watching at Series 11 are going to rewatch Series 1-10 in order to fill the void in the gap year

>Chibnall's laziness and ineptitude is going to cause whatever portion of the audience liked Series 11 to find out how good the show can actually be and will go into Series 12 with higher standards

based chib?

Which Christmas special would be the best to watch with zero context?

 No.181572

>>181571

I guess The Christmas Invasion, but I feel like The Next Doctor might be the special with the least amount of baggage, but I can't remember a fucking thing from that special so maybe not. Same with TDTW&TW, but those are the two worst Christmas specials so they'd still be shitty introductions to the show

 No.181573

>>181572

Eh, while The Next Doctor has a coherent plot with only basic knowledge of the show, to get the full experience requires being familiar with the tradition of regeneration, that multi-Doctor stories are things that that happen, etc.

>Sister asked me if I wanted the Tom Baker blu-ray set for Christmas

>Comes back a couple days later when the price has jumped and asks me if there's anything else I wanted because it was too expensive

>Send her a couple things

>We live a few states apart, she keeps asking me if I've received my gift yet but nothing ever shows up

>Opening presents tonight

>Find one from her under the tree, she had my boyfriend intercept the package

>It's the Baker boxset

So as predicted. Daleks in the trailer to fufill the contract this year and then Daleks in the actual episode next year.

Can someone please renegotiate then contract? Its so stupid.

This mythic contract’s one iron-clad rule seems suspiciously lax. Does it really take a single Dalek cry of EXTERMINATE in a fifteen-second promo to fulfill the single obligation as stipulated by the Nation estate? I doubt it.
