Why not girlfriend or boyfriend?

This is the older generation we're talking about here, they aren't so nonspecific

Would they be okay with you having a boyfriend? That seems too intrusive a question. Dw (dont worry/doctor who).

My Gen X parents always add in an "or a boyfriend!". Makes me wonder if they know I'm gay or if they're just being progressive.

I think you'd make a fine boyfriend.

okay, I'm thinking this is based

"The man who laughed" was better for that.

Yes. Thirteen would respond by being a woman.

Not necessarily "good"–my theory says that the writer thinks Two would crack jokes during the Time War, Five would just disappear, and Six would just hide away.

>I should say something about Sarah Sutton. While Matthew Waterhouse has grown into a rather wonderful and creative person, edging back into the spotlight as he did so, and Janet Fielding is now a kick-arse activist hero, Sutton remains a slightly distant mystery. Her reserve is only slightly explored in these documentaries. She’s just being her, just being everyday, but who is that? I had an enormous crush on her back in the day. I was fourteen. I recall being on a caravan holiday with my family, reading in the newspaper that she was leaving the show. My little heart was broken. At the Longleat Celebration the following year, my friend Miles Booy, from a panel audience asked her ‘what she was doing that evening’. She told him. I was curled up in a ball, unable to speak. But here she is, weirdly now about the same age I am. In the studio footage of filming these stories, which is presented on these discs in largely unedited chunks, it’s odd to see her having fun animatedly with her friends between takes…

ah, there goes shagger again

jodie regenerates into tennant

yeah me too, i was expecting it to be good but it really did everything it was trying to do perfectly, the animation was great too.

>i was expecting it to be good

*and it still surprised me

Stephen Moffat was a shame. While Russell the show runner it was great and Moffat wrote some scripts during that time and they were really good episodes, but he was an awful show runner (imo). Once Russell left the quality of stories went downhill for me

I got pretty burned out by Moffatt's writing and gave up during Capaldi. I came back for Whittaker, and I want to like her, but the writing it always subpar. Capaldi was also fine, but the series lacks direction.

I think Jenna Coleman should have become the Doctor after Matt Smith. She got mixed into his timeline, Clara should have died and the Doctor takes her form because she's inside him, then we find out the amazing Oswin from the Dalek Asylum and the Christmas episode was actually the Doctor all along, because Clara was never as cool as she was.

Eccleston was the best.

I had a full page explanation of it at the time(A very long email I sent to a friend), but yes, it is an awesome idea. I'm actually surprised I could explain it so quickly; I looked at it after I typed it and said, damn, that actually sums it all up.

I'm okay with weaker effects and lower budgets to an extent, because I feel like it forces producers and writers to be more creative and rely on plot and characters, which are much more important to me… but sometimes they do look too cheesy. I remember some 8' tall alien from the drought episode, and when he walked everything above the actors shoulders wobbled, that was awful.

Also, it's not like the current crop of writers seem all that focused on stories that make sense, either. They need to hire some Canadian writers, Canadian sci-fi is the best low-effects sci-fi.

I left during Capaldi too, the writing is shockingly poor, but it doesn’t hold a candle to how shoddy the effects are.

The BBC REEEAAAAALLY need to up the budget for Dr. Who; when the likes of Netflix and Amazon are producing Sci-Fi series like The Expanse and the new Star Trek, Dr. Who is left looking like an undergrad uni production.

I’ve seen a huge amount of amateur film makers produce far better visual effects than Dr. Who and they aren’t backed by a national broadcasting company. It’s honestly just embarrassing.

Yeah it's hella cheesey. When I first watched it I couldn't believe that this was the oh so popular TV show that everyone freaks out over. It's basically on the cheese level of the original Star trek series. I couldn't ever get into it.

I have tried to watch Doctor Who before, but it feels so… low budget. Production qualities on par with the in between theater scenes from MST3K. Is this intentional? I thought the show was very popular.

Ecclestone best actor; Tennant best doctor

Stephen Moffat was a shame. While Russell the show runner it was great and Moffat wrote some scripts during that time and they were really good episodes, but he was an awful show runner (imo). Once Russell left the quality of stories went downhill for me

>Stephen Moffat

>Steven Moffet

>Stevan Moffat

I know dismissing an argument based on someone's spelling is a shit thing to do, but can you really criticise Moffat's episodes if you weren't paying enough attention to see his name, which literally appears in the opening credits of every one of his episodes?

there's a pre-recorded Chris Chibnall message in the end of Resolution.

Resolution Spoilers. Now that the recruitment year is over, Chibnall's gonna go all out on the fanservice

it is weird that there are somehow zero pictures of jenna in a bathing suit at any point. I'd say it might mean she's a never nude but she's shown her tits before

I've been following this contest for a while; the votes are twitter polls pinned at @DoctorWhoNovels. So far I've agreed with most of the answers; yesterday Craig Hinton beat Jenny Colgan by literally 1 vote, which is a relief. Seems like most voters are really just there for the novelisations, though, so I expect Loz will lose the minute he goes against a popular trad writer. Tewwance will probably make it into the final round.

Classic character appearances? Little bones thrown to long-time fans? That's audience hostile m8.

Series 5 managed being a fresh start while still bringing back stuff from the RTD-era (River, Weeping Angels, the Alliance in TPO being pretty much every major RTD-era alien) as well as Classic Who (Silurians).

Chibnall doesn't have enough (or any) new ideas that are good enough to justify his blank slate approach.

do these people not remember the first episode of the reboot that was actually supposed to appeal to new audiences who were completely unfamilliar with Doctor Who brought back the Autons? As well as the 3 Dalek episodes in Series 1.

Audiences aren't going to see a Dalek or Cyberman and be like "i don't know what that is, this show is hostile to me (the audience) and i shall stop watching immediately." They don't need to be explained. We've had 10 series of the revival to catch people up. The only major things from Classic Who that haven't been covered by nuWho are Time Lord/Gallifrey related (Romana, Rani, & Omega).

I'm genuinely curious as to what percentage of the audience has never seen the show before. Ratings are fairly similar to Series 1-10, so I can't imagine it's that many.

And Series 1 managed being a fresh start while still bringing back stuff from Classic Who (Autons, UNIT, Daleks).

ChibWho doesn't even call the Doctor a Time Lord.

this guy is a fucking idiot anyway

I'm sure to most normies Alpha Centauri's cameo appearance was just another funny little alien, but was also a little wink at long time fans.

How was it "fankwank" and "hostile to casuals".

did Series 1 have UNIT? I thought they weren't re-introduced until the Sontaran two-parter in Series 4 (only thing I can remember about those episodes)

The assertion that bringing up anything from the past in Doctor Who is alienating to normies.

Remember when Rusty "Mr. Mass Appeal himself" Davies brought back the fucking Macra?

Oh no, the lore from a 1967 serial was crashing down on me! I felt very confused and left out.

I actually quite like obscure lore. I know fuck all about comics for instance, but I have sometimes watched youtube videos about lore from a superhero movie i just watched. With Doctor Who I usually get the reference unless it's for Expanded Universe stuff like the World Shapers reference in The Doctor Falls

>the World Shapers reference in The Doctor Falls

That was VERY audience hostile.

Moffat using lore from a Lawrence Miles eu book from the 90s is audience hostile

what lore?

Having the 12th Doctor meet the 1st Doctor was audience hostile. How were casuals supposed to know who he was? And on Christmas Day, no less. No wonder ratings were in the toilet.

alien bodies

Oh dear

Having the 10th Doctor, Rose, and Mickey meet Sarah Jane and K9 was audience hostile. How were new viewers who had never seen the Classic series supposed to know who they were?

The Autons (classic 70's monsters) being central to Rose (the first episode of new who) is majorly audience hostile.

Having the 9th Doctor face the Dalek Emperor was audience hostile. Not everyone at the time was familiar with The Evil of the Daleks.

Audience hostility? Oh no no no, we can't be having that, not if the show's to be back at the heart of the national conversation!

As much as I like Tennant's last series when you're bringing back the Sontarans or Davros or doing a story with every companion in it you're no longer trying to reach a mass audience.

Imagine putting Sarah Jane Smith and k9 in one episode and expecting anyone to understand

As much as I like Smith's first series when you're bringing back the Weeping Angels and the Silurians or doing a story set in the last five minutes of 'The Eleventh Hour' you're no longer trying to reach a mass audience.

>doing a story with every companion in it you're no longer trying to reach a mass audience.

Isn't it the most populist thing you can imagine? Every single one of your beloved characters in one thing!

As much as I like Eccleston's only series when you're bringing back the Autons and the Daleks or doing a story set 16 years after 'Survival' you're no longer trying to reach a mass audience.

This man wrote Children of Earth which got people unironically sending in letters to complain that it made them uncomfortable

RTD wrote CoE. That's why it's the best Torchwood series.

That's a Chibnall flag you dope

RTD looks like this. You can tell it's different because he looks like he has a soul and isn't wearing a wig.

did they ever do a commentary track together? I know RTD used to do them all the time with Julie and Tennant and Moff only did a few during his run (his commentary with Karen on Time of Angels is funny as fuck, pic related) but I can't remember if any of Moffat's RTD-era eps had commentary tracks

I think Moffat did a commentary for Empty Child / The Doctor Dances

I'm really hoping one is the original DVD, but I'm not seeing 40 years in the TARDIS.

Why didn't the darleks just beam down a bomb to the Dalek asylum.

"The Asylum force-field is impenetrable."

But they beamed the Doctor/Amy/Rory down

they didnt want to destroy 'perfection' themselves

People are tiny.

They literally did do it themselves because they themselves launched the misses when the shield finally went down.

You're telling me the Daleks don't have any kind of high-tech explosive devices smaller than three grown humans together

You're talking about blowing up an entire fucking planet in one go. If you're thinking about using an Oblivion Continuum bomb from Victory, assuming they even had one, that would have had the side effect of making the planet "bleed through into another dimension".

kek, like Ambassadors of Death but it goes for half the episode and then BWAAAA

even worst

the new theme is crap, but lack ot it is crapper

why does every soundbite from Chibnall promoting the show sound like they're coming from someone who hasn't actually seen the series? he wrote 6/10 episodes but he sounds like a BBC exec just giving generic lines out to try and build hype.

gone are the days of Moffat's DWM column having shit like "I've already figured out the cliffhanger to episode 11 of next series and it's going to be a whopper"

>"I've already figured out the number of episodes for next year and it's going to be a whopper. :)"

I still don't know why Woman didn't have the titles in it. The moment when Thirteen finally shows up and the bassline from the theme starts playing feels like it's meant to lead directly into the titles, but instead it just stops and continues on as normal and leaves you with blue balls

Introducing the Doctor, the TARDIS and the opening titles would have been WAY too much for new viewers. Better to leave it for The Ghost Monument so they don't get confused. :)

>almost one million people were sick of jodie from the regeneration scene alone

10 years ago tonight i had a dream about the 2008 christmas special. the doctor was on jabba's sail barge but it was full of sontarans, and then another barge comes in full of cybermen and miss hartigan.

it's weird, i still have those kinds of dreams to this day, where i experience a future episode i'm hyped for in first person and then in the dream i feel disappointed and genuinely believe i've just watched it.

the one i had for the series 11 premiere was basically a ytp where chris chibnall keeps interrupting his own episode and just laughing really hard. i remember loving it and feeling it was really transgressive tv.

The episode includes a cameo appearance of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald, as the Doctor's memories of Clara, lost during "Hell Bent", are restored. The scene was the last to be filmed for the episode and while Coleman was willing to come back to film, timing between the filming of this special and her work in Victoria was difficult to arrange. Moffat said "How many times have I killed that girl off and she was right there in my last shot! It's absolutely extraordinary. The unkillable Coleman!"

those are IMDB rankings, not viewership ratings

That's about my conclusion, yeah. Wrote about it on Reddit recently:

>The show is going on another year-long hiatus before S12. Will a year's worth of hindsight be kind to S11? Its average AI is already more than a full point below anything we saw with Capaldi, with four separate episodes sitting on or below the magical 80 line that was only crossed once in S8-10. I expect that when Doctor Who does finally come back in 2020, we'll be looking at numbers a lot closer to S10 than S9, and frankly I wouldn't be surprised if they were actually worse.

I've only ever had one Who dream, actually, and it was fairly recently. I was playing a companion in a finale story with Tim Shaw, but Capaldi was still the Doctor. Of course in the dream I completely forgot all my lines, so with the power of scenery chewing I ended up improvising a completely different ending to the episode that I thought was significantly more compelling. In the end Capaldi was really pissed at me though.

You want it to feel like a treat: a big, thrilling, explosive, moving, cheeky, surprising treat. Basically, you want the Special to be epic. And I promise, it’s going to be epic.

I want it to be good and or enjoyable. But thats not gonna happen is it Chib?

The Doctor’s a hero for everyone in a way that I really adore, because the people in the cast look like they live next door to you. They’re not these extraordinary gorgeous, god-like figures. It’s not a typical superhero that has an unattainable beauty. It’s a hero for everyone because they look like everyone. it has Matt's foot head and big ears

Kill The Moon definitely isn't as bad as it's made out to be (Clara finally breaking and laying into Twelve at the end is enough to keep it from being anywhere near Fear Her-tier) but it's definitely not a hidden masterpiece or whatever. The ideas and concepts are good and interesting, but Harness just can't into pacing at all. It's like he has all the right ingredients, but doesn't know how to put them all together into an engaging episode.

it looks like Eccleston and Matt got cross-bred together like in The Fly or something

has there ever been an episode where the Doctor and companion switch bodies? it popped into my head earlier and it seems like it could make for a fun episode but I feel like it's too simple a premise for the show to have not covered already but I can't remember if it did

The Master and Doctor swapped bodies in a 3rd Doctor short trip but that's it

The closest that comes to mind is New Earth

Moff Who, Russel Who

Chib Who, Classic Who

still Who

>I love the Sylvester McCoy era, I think it's fantastic

so how did the chib era turn out to be such shallow tripe then?

Kerblam is chibnall’s idea of the mccoy era

>loves the era with the scheming, manipulative doctor

>creates a doctor who barely knows whats going on, let alone has any sort of plan in place

13 does have occasional moments of calculated scheming, it’s just like an entirely separate personality that switches on sometimes to replace her childlike wonderous and inquisitive side

I think her calculated scheming is how she deals with enemies, especially when she's away from companions.

hypothetically, if the Beeb were to "remake" a missing episode like those scenes in AAISAT and TUAT in order to give us some content next year, which one would you want them to do the most?

Marco Polo

It was indeed. Then, for some reason, they made it so you couldn’t download it at all from their website, only listen to it on their soundcloud (which was, of course, also free). Now, years later, they’re briefly putting it up for download again and acting like it’s a special offer. Fucking madness.

TARDIS appearances in Rose: Title sequence, rose walks past it after the shop explodes, doctor walks her to the TARDIS and as she walks away she hears the noise, she enters behind the restaurant and they travel to the nestene, rose declines travelling with the doctor so he leaves and she sees it in flight for the first time before he comes back and she joins.

>tfw Moff pulled off two completely spectacular and instantly memorable TARDIS introduction back to fucking back in Snowmen and Bells

i can't even be angry about chibnall getting rid of christmas specials because i know the only reason i'm really upset is that there'll never be another capaldi christmas special

I don't remember Edge of Destruction being half as surreal as it is

talk me out of buying a wii u by using a doctor who analogy

Bells is def his weakest, but that's only because of the context of the scene in the episode (the Doctor doesn't have time to explain anything to Clara so she gets the 5 second "crash course") and in the context of the series as a whole since Clara already had a TARDIS introduction of sorts so doing it again would've been repetitive.

If I had to rank them:

>Amy/the viewer at the end of The Eleventh Hour

>Clara/the viewer in The Snowmen

>Twelve in Husbands

>Bill in The Pilot

>Clara in Bells of St John

I can't remember if Rory had one, and Danny's was just him kinda poking his head in while still processing finding out about Clara/Twelve.

buying the Moffat-era on DVD instead of blu-ray

but the wii u is cheap and you have the entire wii library as well, and with a simple hack to flip a switch you have the entire gamecube library too (and I don't have any of those consoles)

I'm holding off on the switch until a console revision, which is probably due next year

I just watched A Christmas Carol with my parents who don't watch Who, and they didn't get it.

what kind of comments did they make?

why not just emulate at that point

Because the actual hardware is more accurate and more comfy. Dolphin has varying results and occasional performance issues on my computer

They thought it was too weird, especially for what was a Christmas Carol adaptation. I can't imagine ever explaining why Rory was dressed as a Centurion.

Which Christmas special would be the worst to watch with zero context?

Time of the Doctor, almost certainly

Time of the Doctor and/or Husbands of River Song.

I can attest to this.

Twice Upon a Time was borderline nonsensical to casual fans who have watched the previous 10 series, I can't imagine what it'd be like to watch it as your first episode of the show.

Then again my first "real" (I remember being in the room when my dad watched it as a kid and I caught the end of The Lazarus Experiment the night before) episode of Doctor Who was a marathon of End of Time Part 1 & 2 and I somehow was not only able to understand most of what was happening based on context clues and just paying attention as the episodes went on, but I got so invested in it that I cried at like 3 separate points in part 2. I went back and rewatched S1-4 before S5 aired and now I'm here.

wait I just realized

>new viewers who started watching at Series 11 are going to rewatch Series 1-10 in order to fill the void in the gap year

>Chibnall's laziness and ineptitude is going to cause whatever portion of the audience liked Series 11 to find out how good the show can actually be and will go into Series 12 with higher standards

based chib?

Which Christmas special would be the best to watch with zero context?

I guess The Christmas Invasion, but I feel like The Next Doctor might be the special with the least amount of baggage, but I can't remember a fucking thing from that special so maybe not. Same with TDTW&TW, but those are the two worst Christmas specials so they'd still be shitty introductions to the show

Eh, while The Next Doctor has a coherent plot with only basic knowledge of the show, to get the full experience requires being familiar with the tradition of regeneration, that multi-Doctor stories are things that that happen, etc.

So as predicted. Daleks in the trailer to fufill the contract this year and then Daleks in the actual episode next year.

Can someone please renegotiate then contract? Its so stupid.

This mythic contract’s one iron-clad rule seems suspiciously lax. Does it really take a single Dalek cry of EXTERMINATE in a fifteen-second promo to fulfill the single obligation as stipulated by the Nation estate? I doubt it.
