Cant wait for the Christmas special, lads. Got my cocoa all warmed up and a nice comfy blanket :)

Good to know that no matter how bad a Chib showrunner is, he can't take away these comfy Christmas feelings!!

Get your popcorn ready as well

A Christmas Carol and The Snowmen are strong contenders.

Then again, the true answer might be Resolution. You don't even have to have the holidays in order!

I feel there's an obvious one somewhere in the RTD era because that's very much his style of cruel irony, but the only thing coming to mind at the moment is Kira's death in Kerblam, and that's just on an emotional/conceptual level.

No problem, Happy Holidays! (I’m an atheist so it’s illegal for me to watch Chr*stmas specials or say Chr*stmas)

i know, i know i've let you down…

Hooray that the Daleks are confirmed, I guess.

the fucking annual appearance contract

>it's still briggs

>Chibnall keeps a tight lid on information about S11, turns out he's got nothing to hide

>New Year's special has the potential for a surprise twist with the Daleks, Chibnall gives everything away

I realise he's probably desperate to get people to watch the New Year's special, but this still feels so ass-backwards to me

What if, like moffat, chibnall doesn't have control over how the show is promoted and things get spoiled without his consent - and S11 simply didn't have anything the marketing team considered worth spoiling?

post yfw the dalek reveal is clearly supposed to be a surprise

No way, next you will be telling me it stars the Daleks

Whats the point of making something so verbose and poetic if only like… 2 people understand it?

It only goes about to show you that the show right now is aimed at casual viewers who don't go online and look up news about it or go on any fan forums.

What are these vacuum cleaner salt pot monsters, bring back the white male villains!

RTDchads and Moffchads at christmas, remembering their beloved "christmas specials"

All the Moffags on who complain about no christmas special but I thought RTD was bad? Why upset that something he started is gone?

the thing that gets me the most is how tackily the "exterminate" has been extracted - you hear the dalek beam awkwardly fade out when there was absolutely nothing stopping them from just cutting the audio before the shot started or letting the shot ring out in full

Friendship with Chibnall is ended. RTD is my best friend now

RTD had one year without a full series and it was because Tennant was working shakespeare. He still made three episodes that year and a mini series of Torchwood. What do Moffat and Chibnall do? Give up and only make one episode in a year.

Why WAS 2016 a gap year? did chibnall not get signed on early enough to notify moffat early enough that he wasn't going to start straight away, in order for moffat to be able to produce a series in time for 2016?

Five (5) years in a row of RTD putting out at least Eight (8) episodes of Doctor Who related media written by him.

Are RTD's Cucumber and Banana worth watching? I'm het.

I hope the next Doctor is actually a milk truck.

did u have a good christmas??

it was alright

did santy claus get you anything?

Let's be honest if Chibnall made a Christmas special Santa would be a woman.

I don't really get what you're trying to say here. I think you're completely wrong. If anyone were to do that, it'd have been Moffat.

Can someone unironically please explain to me the thinking behind not revealing that it was the Daleks in the trailer after the finale? Why wait until Christmas Day to release a preview that only a handful of people are gonna see, with a single word of audio over that same shitty effect from the logo reveal? Surely it would have made more sense to do that a couple of weeks ago?

Fan edits of two of Matt Smith's Christmas specials dropped today

I havent really seen any of this guy's stuff, but is there any honestly good edits, or is it just this guy removing things that verge him? (also is this the same guy who made the heaven sent where the doctor apparently just runs around in a loop punching a wall, never dying?)

Same guy!

My guess is that Moffat simply needed to take a year off to come up with ideas for Series 10. You can tell he was prepared to end his run at S9 after he'd used his ideas up. Even the S10 we got feels like Moffat running on fumes after S8 and S9

Resolution of the Clom (featuring Dalek)

Wow GWAAD is a mall santa claus, didnt know that. He's really great with kids

Perhaps it's acknowldging the leak and giving something on Christmas Day?

Santa is a symbol of white patriarchy. He enters the home (womb) via the chimney (vaginal canal) to deposit his gifts (sperm). Santa is a rapist. Christmas is violence. #HappyKwanzaa

santa got me a calendar with no jodie. based

Because he has to have the Daleks on TV for 2018 to fulfill the contract. Thats why the special was moved to news years because there wont be any Doctor Who on Tv for Chibs to put a Dalek in.

Someone needs to negotiate the contract already.

But there weren't any this year, so shouldn't they lose the rights?

yeah that was crap. the yellow text looked really tacky as well.

yeah but the confusing part is, if they're gonna reveal the daleks in a shit teaser trailer, why not do it in the one that came straight after the finale?

haha it's kind of embarrassing. from two shittily edited teasers, the hook for this episode so far is that… there's a really bad monster, and it's a dalek

Maybe they assumed that the vague Dalek silhouette in the first trailer was enough to count as a 2018 appearance, then it turned out that wouldn't suffice so the second trailer was pushed out with the Daleks' catchphrase hastily edited in to satisfy the contract? Who knows if the theory about the contract even holds true, although it's suspicious as hell to see the trend of the Daleks showing up every single year continue across three showrunners' eras now.

ilu cloyman

I am very drunk. Ask me anything. Please.

How has your christmas been? did santa come?

Same as the last few. Got very drunk, won all the family quizzes/games and now I'm so lonely and depressed I want someone to shoot me in the fucking head. How was yours'?

does it only have up to Twelve because each Doctor gets their own month? how does that work if War is on the cover too tho

same reason the next time trailers at the end of the episode and the trailers they post online afterwards are different: there's literally no logic involved and everyone in the Chib administration is inept

The online trailers are the ones that air on TV immediately after the ep ends. Yes, bbc1 viewers see two trailers in a row. Yes, this makes the Next Times even more pointless.

mine was ok. i got a cd thing for learning spanish. gonna learn spanish this year then

I can barely tell what the fuck is going on during these POV shots in Robot and this shit is bluray quality on a 50 inch screen. I can only wonder how the fuck folks back in the 70's supposed to tell.

Oh no, the Doctor might have to feel the back of his KANDY HAND!

It's actually not difficult to tell. Maybe it's a color blindness issue? Try watching it in B&W, a lot of people did back in the day.

Rewatched Robot like a week ago, had no problems.

Why does a 90 minute Call The Midwife special feel like a 3 hour miniseries

why is the "Merry Christmas from Doctor Who" a video from Graham and not Thirteen? I know it shows her saying it but she gets just as much screentime as fucking Chris Noth and the woman from Kerblam! while Graham bookends it.

Not complaining, but it's like if they did this in 2011 and gave Rory the spotlight isntead of Eleven

>the woman from Kerblam!

say her name

>I'd describe Resolution as an average episode with fucking terrible parts

that's cool he got the brilliant book of doctor who 2012. i loved those, it's a shame they only did two. felt properly interesting, it was like what i wished doctor who annuals were instead of just wordsearches and basic fact files and things.

just 1 dalek?

looks genuinely scary (and that's coming from someone who thinks horror movies are generally garbage with a few exceptions) and it's pathetic to see /tv/ bending over backwards to find a way to make the movie about race in order to justify hating it because that board is just /pol/ 2: electric boogaloo

Didn't he say Punjab was mediocre? Not saying he's wrong about this episode being shit but I really don't trust anything he says anymore

>it's better than the finale

the only way this could be less impressive would be if he said "it's better than The Tsuranga Conundrum"

He has shit taste yes but he's generally been accurate about S11's overall lack of quality.

based pol

>it doesn't make the Dalek "laughable" but there are bits you may laugh at

I mean the Daleks haven't really been threatening since Series 1 and RTD and Moffat were able to make them somewhat comical without making them Slitheen-tier, but I don't think Chibnall is capable of writing anything intentionally funny

maybe you get shit taste

he has been 100% on point

Please improve your posts Judy.

my resolution it is

punjab is poop

>Music is the best thing about the episode and more Goldesque

Interesting, I liked Seguns ambient stuff but thought his more melody driven pieces were ass so hearing that it's both Goldesque and the best thing in the special makes me want to hear it all the more

I mean, it *is* about race (notice the tagline, "Watch yourself") but Jordan Peele is one of the only writer/directors working today in popular media who remembers that "Satire" does not solely equal "Comedy". This looks scary and weird as fuck.

The T-posing is a bit cringey, but it also seems like that's an intentional part of the horror.

Peele explicitly said in an interview that it's not about race

He also said that the opening in particular is laughably bad.

Punjab is only good because of Vinay, every other element of it drags it down to a 6/10. It's the highest series 11 could ever achieve.

muh authoral intent

This is a prediction: the Dalek interferes with history and ends up creating the entire Sheffield steel industry so that it can build itself a casing. (Think the Silence or Scaroth.)

>notice the tagline, "Watch yourself"

What about that says its about race? Nothing in any of the promo stuff so far makes it seem like its about race

nah, he falls in the past and is contained, cut to 500 years later

>It's an episode where you need to go into it open-minded about the mythology of the Daleks and a tad drunk so you don't think about it much.

davros was from sheffield

no mayoids in trailler

That's not even accurate, Tim Heidecker and Elizabeth Moss are visible. But if it was that would still only mean it's a film with black characters.

the cringey dispraxia reference is after Ryan does something requiring hand-eye coordination, someone says to him "not bad for someone with dispraxia"

yeah the Lord of the Rings movies only have cast members from 1 race, but that doesn't make them about race the same way a movie with an all-black cast isn't automatically about race

You don't hang out or speak with many black people, do you? Or perhaps you do and just don't know what "Watch yourself" means in that context.

File: e9f121f02bc041a⋯.jpg (135.28 KB, 1212x515, 1212:515, 1221793441506789477.jpg)

yeah, just the one dalek, actually

>Evil men from the east and south

>Greedy hirsuit dwarves with their coarse language are masters of gold and gems

>The only good in the world are the fair elves and the ruddy haired men of the west

Come on, anon, use your brain.

that cannot be stopped by a bazooka or a nuke?

explained somehow?

I know what it means, it's just not a phrase used exclusively by black people.

I don't know why you'd read that phrase and immediately assume the film is about race

He’s the Doctor for the month of Smarch

Just rewatched A Christmas Carol and The Snowmen on DVD, v. comfy

the tagline is referring to the fact that the movie is about the family getting terrorized by their dopplegangers. They're literally watching themselves.

When there is 1 dalek, it is invincible, but if there are many, they are cannon fodder. See: Both Dalek stories in Series 1

The vague dalek silhouette is only visible in a freeze frame, the actual shot has so much rubble flying everywhere you can't make out the shape of the dalek

She's actually right about the strengths of this series. It's just a shame they're outweighed by the poor writing for most episodes.

Does anyone know if there's a difference between the Se7en 20 Twelfth Doctor's sonic and the Character Options version? I can't seem to find a comparison or anything on the Se7en 20 version at all.

I just want the best looking toy to autistically go buzz buzz at things with.

Watched Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways, the Christmas Invasion, Time of the Doctor, and Last Christmas with my family today. The whole time I kept thinking about this. Merry Christmas and happy holidays, /who/.

Se7en 20

>has an inaccurate wood grain texture

>second button makes the emitter spin while playing the analyse sound

>has an ugly as fuck battery pull tab slot carved into the handle as well as many visible screw holes on 1 side

Character options

>visually more accurate

>second button is a ‘dummy button’ and does nothing, only there to be prop accurate

>also has screw holes making one side ugly

They are both bad for different reasons, pick your poison. The character options one had a rerelease that made the light brighter but still has the dummy button and no spinning

But I don’t think I ever saw the actual one spin in the show

kek how have I never seen it before

can you ever imagine chibnall doing anything even as remotely creative with his storytelling? Do you think Woman's vlog timeskip and title subversion was the cleverest trick chibnall could think of, and he's already out of ideas when it comes to nonlinear storytelling?

Moffat started out writing boundary-pushing sitcoms in an era where the boundary had already been pushed pretty far in that genre. Chibnall started out writing procedural shite.

and oh doesn't it show

That is probably one of the biggest chibnall blackpills. He doesn't have the experience or capacity for creative storytelling or boundary pushing, he has built his career on following formulas and his most successful work was only a success because of how other people executed it

I hope people see what I mean now when I was dreading the idea of S11 being "procedural". Because now the show is more procedural than it has been in yonks, only without the formality of the Doctor having any sort of profession.

Harriet Jones

When certain parts of the fandom here and elsewhere tear into this most recent series, I keep hearing "terrible writing" and "awful scripts" as a monotonous refrain, as if saying it over and over somehow absolves one of the need to qualify these assertions. So, what specifically is "awful?" No one ever gives any examples, and they seem to have absolutely no memory of ACTUALLY poorly-written episodes from previous series.

Personally, I think the writing is clever and funny and has a lot of heart. And in the way of meeting my own criteria, I'll look at what I consider to be one of the weaker episodes from this series: The Tsuranga Conundrum. Setting aside the story itself for a moment, let's just look at a couple of the lines.

First, there's when The Doctor is asked what KIND of Doctor she is, and she says, "Well, medicine, science, engineering, candy floss, LEGO, philosophy, music, problems, people, hope.. . Mostly hope." Such a great line. It starts out as an impressive list of aptitudes, devolves into Pythonesque absurdity, and then finishes off with a thought that not only resonates through the rest of that episode but really through the entirety of the show, both old and new. "A Doctor of Hope." Yes, that's what she (and previously he) has truly always been. And "hope" found its way into another of my favorite lines from that episode: the incantation at the end.

"May the saints of all the stars and constellations bring you hope as they guide you out of the dark and into the light on this voyage and the next and all the journeys still to come. For now and evermore."

First, it's just lovely and rhythmic, which is great. I was moved even just at the sound of it, and then when you look at what it is: this amazing blending of science and faith wrapped in the notion of an eternal journey and all hinged on the word "hope." (And I love the use of the word "constellations," both for its euphony and for the notion that the pattern of the stars is both a map and a library of heroic tales.)

The Tsuranga Conundrum at first glance appeared to be just another unstoppable-monster-on-a-spaceship story, which is not only a common trope in sci-fi, but it's also something of an old saw for this show in particular and usually indicative of laziness coming from the writers' room, and the pregnant man side story looked like it was going to just be some cheap comic relief. When the episode started, I thought, "Really guys? Just phoning this one in, are we?"

But I think that was a deliberate feint. It was meant to look like a "typical" Doctor Who episode: rampaging monster, heroes running through corridors, stodgy military personnel arguing with the Doctor, etc. But then it turned out to be this moving essay on the notion of hope, and the "comic relief" was tied into this, with some really powerful commentary on parenthood and uncertainty. (I'm tiptoeing around spoilers here for those who haven't watched it yet.)

The Tsuranga Conundrum was not my favorite episode this season. It's not even in my top three, but it's a tightly-written script. I really don't see how people can legitimately go after the writers on this show. (I feel like I know why these people ACTUALLY don't like the show, and why they don't want the rest of us to like it, either, but they know that their real beef with the recent changes to DW won't get any traction here in the 21st century, so they've made "bad writing" their metaphorical "W.O.M.D.s in Iraq.")

But this is the same kind of fan who'd say Series 8-10 had "terrible writing" and "awful scripts" without elaborating on it.

I still don't understand the appeal of these videos

Well, you might never feel entertained watching them, but I will try to explain.

The Doctor actually explained a similar idea, once. He uses his companions to better enjoy his adventures. They help him to see the universe anew, because he's so old and has trouble seeing it as interesting.

Reactors watch our favorite shows. We get to relive the excitement of a big twist or revelation or emotional moment, through them.

And sometimes reactors are really clever, or they make smart observations. That reactor often has well-formed opinions, and she pays attention to the story very well, so her investment is appreciated and results in smart ideas that I for one enjoy hearing about.

Did you actually pay 500 for that?

>not even a pic from doctor who

It's cathartic watching someone bawl their eyes out at a great Moffat episode when you're too emotionally stunted to do so yourself.

Sony couldn't make a decent Spider-Man film to save their life, and then suddenly they release Into the Spider-Verse, a massively kino film. Do you think it's a coincidence that that coincides with Doctor Who losing all it's kino? It's a block kino transfer.

We have to steal back the kino. It's time for Animated Who.

It wasn't just one block transfer, you might just see a few franchises suddenly getting good, while doctor who's corpse rots away. That AHDS have kicked in (Audience Hostile Dispersal System)

What story is the dialogue this is based on in again? I can hear it in my head but I can’t quite place it.

Meanwhile in the TARDIS 1.

my bad

>Every young Time Lord is supposed to watch a distressing event that has to happen and let it go unchanged, so they can become the people they need to be. But Susan fled Gallifrey before this could happen to her, so the Doctor tried to make her witness one for herself— the destruction by an alien race of a planet full of people just like her, who were so similar there were even young women who shared her name.

>But Susan convinced her grandfather that their people were wrong, and persuaded him to intervene to save the world that was supposed to burn. That was when the Doctor saved the Earth for the first time, but it could never be the last— the universe would always try to set things to how they were supposed to have been, and so aliens would invade that planet again and again until one race finally succeeded in destroying it. But the Doctor will stand against them until their final body dies, because a child convinced them that inaction was always wrong. So the Earth is the place where the Doctor broke one oath and took on a better one. It’s the place where she truly rebelled against what it meant to be a Lord of Time.

That's Mario kart

I've only unlocked Ness and villager on smash so far

One of the minisodes found on the series 5 Blu-ray, bridges Flesh and Stone and Vampires of Venice. It's also absurdly kino for something that is entirely missable

Hell Bent is the cynical take on Gallifrey from a classic fan that is hostile to the version nuwho onlys have built up in their head over a decade.

Imagine if Moffat was just hiding around the S11 set writing secret TARDIS minisodes for the main characters that dramatically improved all of them

Moffat wasting some of the best Doctor/companion dialogue he's ever done on a blu-ray exclusive minisode is still baffling to me

I really really wonder what he genuinely thinks of Chibnall Who so far. Like in his heart of hearts. Has he even seen it? That little jab by RTD makes me wonder what else they truly think as the two previous showrunners, it's at least obvious that they adore each other

Moffat could have written that minisode in his sleep. He probably did.

This is some dire fuckin times lads

They both know how hard it is to make the show so they're inherently going to look at Chibnall's work more sympathetically. He's like a family member who they can gently take the piss out of.

11 was such an old perv

what's this from

sounds very series 11ish

I think Moff just had so much he'd wanted to say about the character/show built up over his career that when he finally got to Series 5 he couldn't help himself. That scene in particular I think was either supposed to be at the end of Flesh & Stone or the beginning of Vampires of Venice but it couldn't really fit in either place so rather than leave it on the cutting room floor I suppose Moff just figured he'd make it into a minisode. Especially because the scene wouldn't work anywhere else unless he saved it for the next new companion.

A lot of the Moffat-era has moments that feel like things Moffat has wanted to see in the show for so long and finally had the chance to do like the Doctor entering the TARDIS "for the first time" in Husbands or Amy's arc in Series 5 or Clara's arc from Series 8-9. Even in episodes he didn't write like The Doctor's Wife he's responsible for moments like that (the "push to open" line and Idris saying "I always took you where you needed to be"). IIRC Heaven Sent was an idea he was thinking about doing for Big Finish during the wilderness era but decided not to waste it on that just in case.

When did production start on the special? I've been assuming that the decision to postpone it to New Years was a matter of being behind schedule (although the idea that one week post-production would make a significant difference seemed questionable) but the fact that it has New Years related dialogue makes it obvious that they made the decision in pre-production.

Will we ever find out why Chibnall ruined Christmas?

Given that it's a Whitaker episode, I can only hope it will actually be the Resolution of Doctor Who.

>Let’s see if Thirteen can out-do Nine in the field of going absolutely batshit when she meets the Dalek.

she clearly won't, there is absolutely no indication that she won't just treat it like she treats any other villain

'i'm not having this' sounds like so underwhelming. like, a dalek kills someone and she's like 'oh that's not on. that's really not brilliant'

We are NOT bullying TUAT and in fact officially recognize it as kino. Neo will not win this one

even sandifer, the greatest moff apologist in the world, couldnt defend the rusty reveal

Honestly made me kind of happy.

>TUAT may well be the last ever Christmas special

it was filmed with the rest of Series 11

>i am not a good dalek you are a good dalek!

based moff trivialising the emotional climax of capaldi's second episode in order to remind more casual viewers of who rusty was

I honestly forgot about Rusty and was confused as fuck at first

It's Rusty's way of saying I love you.

i have no idea what to think about it. i really can't imagine them not saying it's brilliant and that chibnall's brilliant and blows their stuff out of the water, but since rtd and moffat clearly know how to make good doctor who they'd surely know that series 11 is so hollow compared to anything that's come before. there's no way they can look at yaz, ryan and graham and go 'yep, they're just as alive and iconic as rose tyler or amy pond'.

i do love the idea of 12 meeting rusty again at the end of his life where he's comfortable with himself

>Because this is what I'm going to do. I'm going to rescue her. I'm going to save Rose Tyler from the middle of the Dalek fleet, and then I'm going to save the Earth, and then, just to finish off, I'm going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky!

>Technology using the one thing a Dalek can't do. Touch. Sealed inside your casing. Not feeling anything ever, from birth to death, locked inside a cold metal cage. Completely alone. That explains your voice. No wonder you scream.

>What are you waiting for? Look, you hate me. You want to kill me. Well, go on. Kill me. Kill me! You are my enemy! And I am yours. You are everything I despise. The worst thing in all creation. I've defeated you time and time again. I've defeated you. I sent you back into the Void; I saved the whole of reality from you! I am the Doctor – and you are the Daleks!

>I'm going to save my friend the only way I can. Exterminate!

<I'm the Doctor. Here's my New Year's resolution: I'm coming for you!

If Moffat ever gets asked to give a praising quote about it, keep a close eye on his wording.

>Here's my new years resolution: I'm coming for you.

Oh god the lack of emotion in her voice when she says this. Jodie won't make a good BF actress will she?

And how is that a resolution anyway? It's like saying her resolution is to do the laundry when she gets back home. It's a singular action.

>Here's a New Year message for you to send. Earth is protected, by me and my mates, this year and every other!

Fucking hell

I'm pretty sure Chibnall said in an article somewhere he was out of ideas for a Christmas special and felt a New Year's one would better suit the story he wanted to write.

Don't forget Jodie's first story was supposed to be the 2017 Christmas special but Chibnall didn't like the idea and Moffat was forced to write it himself so the tradition doesn't get broken. Which Chibnall obviously wasn't concerned for.

>I'm pretty sure Chibnall said in an article somewhere he was out of ideas for a Christmas special

I'm pretty sure the out of ideas thing was actually from an "anonymous source" for The Mirror

IIRC that was one of those anonymous source mirror articles

it is the doctor! scarper! scarper!

I hate those guys!

>I'm pretty sure Chibnall said in an article somewhere he was out of ideas for a Christmas special and felt a New Year's one would better suit the story he wanted to write.

What does that even mean though? You don't need an "idea" for a Christmas special. Just write the episode you want to write but throw some snow in there. But yeah I doubt Chibnall would actually admit to being out of ideas, especially in his first year.

If you think you've seen the Doctor fight the Daleks, think again.

They lost the christmas slot due to viewing figures its not rocket surgery guys

TUAT was 5.7M, but that was still the 5th most watched program that day

File: e9f121f02bc041a⋯.jpg (135.28 KB, 1212x515, 1212:515, 1221793441506789477.jpg)

its just the one dalek, actually

13 is supposed to be bad luck

The last 3 Capaldi specials were all 5.70M, lower than any of the 10 specials before that. Tennant had literally double these numbers.

Low viewing figures of previous specials resulting in the BBC booting Doctor Who off the Christmas slot at least makes more sense than Chibnall destroying a 10+ year tradition just cos.

I think it's more likely that the execs/Chibnall just had some radical thought that arbitrarily rejigging it would make the show seem "fresh" again, just like all the other shitty S11 changes.

I used to think that even when the show is cancelled and they stop making seasons, they might still do a yearly Christmas special. That's how immutable it seemed to me.

I just find it hard to believe they'd be stupid enough to think that breaking the tradition would be beneficial at all. How many shows have an audience that has incorporated watching it into their annual holiday? It makes the show's future look as shaky as ever, now that we know even the Christmas time slot isn't assured.

this seems to be the last time rtd even posted about series 11, which was just before it aired. could just be that he feels it isn't his place to validate the series by giving it compliments though. who knows.

his reply to barney harwood is cute (he presented totally doctor who in 2006/7)

that could be it. even if i dislike chibnall's vision, i'm not going to assume everything is his fault - moffat had to spin the bbc's decisions into something positive too. moff said who would lose the christmas slot if there wasn't a special in 2017, but maybe the bbc was looking for any excuse anyway. if it was chibnall's decision maybe he would have actually explained the idea behind it.

the figures themselves aren't relevant, the context of the program ranking for that day is more important

>moff said who would lose the christmas slot if there wasn't a special in 2017

This may have just meant that they'd lose the opportunity to do a special at all. I doubt moving it to Jan 1st actually means it can never be on Christmas ever again

So if the show got canceled after 2020 (maybe only one special in 2021) do you think Jodie's Doctor will manage to carry the torch through the hiatus the way McCoy did with the VNAs till 1996 and then as part of the Big Finish range till 2005?

I think most of the people who are invested in the show to the point of buying books and audio dramas aren't really fans of 13.

they are the playthings of davros now.

>How many shows have an audience that has incorporated watching it into their annual holiday?

really good point, it's ridiculous that they'd throw that away.

i'd love to know what davies and moffat think of that, let alone their views on the series itself.

in the writer's tale, davies was stressing the fuck out about doing the 2008 christmas special, and when gardner raised the idea of just not doing one he couldn't allow himself to entertain the idea.

Think about it though - if RTD really enjoyed S11 would he keep it to himself? Apart from being a past showrunner he is also a huge fan of the show himself. Why would he not share his excitement if he was excited at all?

did he ever show outward excitement about moffat's era?

I'm the Nilso. Here's my New Year's resolution: I'm coming out!

File: ee39f71137184e4⋯.png (129.26 KB, 175x405, 35:81, 1493375279204.png)

>if it was chibnall's decision maybe he would have actually explained the idea behind it.

This is the oddest thing about it, the complete silence about missing Christmas. If it was a scheduling issue, rather than a conscious decision, you'd think they would at least say this and apologise for it. I know admitting fault is showing weakness blah blah blah, but it's just insulting to the audience to do something so drastic but pretend that it's not even worth discussing. Same with next year being a gap year.

It also doesn't seem like they've tried to put a positive spin on it either, as far as I've seen. They're just treating it as normal.

>I doubt moving it to Jan 1st actually means it can never be on Christmas ever again

No, but it's no longer assumed which is a big deal. Even a few months ago nobody, even casual audiences, would anticipate a Christmas without a special. Now we'll never know whether we'll get one or not. Like next year, for example, what's happening then? No episodes at all?

I wasn't thinking of the EU at all, that's a whole new mess. BF's relationship with the new series is complicated, I think it's relationship to the classic series will always be far stronger. It's not like they've incorporated any of the new series Doctors into its main range. Tennant has done audios, but there's no indication he's ever going to be a regular the same way the others are. And Smith and Capaldi have never touched it at all. If the show got cancelled now, I highly doubt Jodie would migrate to BF.

I was just picturing the show transitioning from a normal season-based program, to just a yearly special with Jodie (and eventually, her regenerating and the show continuing with someone else). Obviously not an ideal setup and impossible to maintain momentum/develop characters (it could work if the Doctor traveled alone and had special guests ever year, like the Tennant specials), but the Christmas special was so ingrained that I expected it to outlive the show for at least a few years.

I still need to buy Writer's Tale. As well as About Time.

Don't forget 2019 won't have a Christmas special either.

>Doctor Who as one of those shows that only seems to exist in interminable Christmas specials like Call The Midwife

fucking kill me

I don't take this as guaranteed, all we know for sure is that Series 12 is in 2020.

Don't worry, it'll never happen now. Christmas is cancelled

New Year's specials aren't any better

You're missing the point. The show existing purely as a yearly special was only imaginable because of how strong the Christmas tradition was. Now that that's been undermined, the (already probably unlikely scenario) would never happen. When the show dies, it'll just die. It won't limp along for a few years after.

it's so fucking dire. why was it moved to sunday, why was it moved to new year's day, why is there a gap year, why don't we know what's going on why is chibnall having to say shit like 'sunday night popcorn'

>why is chibnall having to say shit like 'sunday night popcorn'

I mean it definitely did that, there's no arguing that. A lot of it is inherent in both a new Doctor and the Doctor now being a woman, mind you.

Chibnall's real failure was his inability to follow up on that and make the rest of the series worth watching.

I expected it to go a little deeper than one single casting choice.

the fourth tennant christmas special was The Next Doctor, which is so forgettable you literally didn't even remember it. It didn't have a major guest star, it just ran on the clickbait sensationalism of supposedly including the "next" doctor

Every trailer and teaser for S11 has been shit.

The Resolution ad that just casually gives away the Dalek by slapping an "exterminate" voice clip after a scene from the previous trailer makes me want to vomit

don't worry i always forget about the next doctor as well

What RTD or Moffat interviews are worth watching?

Essentially, the power core of every dalek ship was a space-time thingy that when they shot each other turned into a black hole or something.

I think it's supposed to be the same idea as the continuum whatever in Victory of the Daleks, only with millions of them all going off in a big chain

Sounds dumb.

I think Brooker would've done a lot of kino experimentation with the structure and format of the show from episode to episode. Like how Black Mirror is supposedly releasing a "choose-your-own-adventure" episode soon.

>tfw musical episode of Doctor Who never

Yeah, when I first talked about the idea of Brooker as showrunner ages ago I was half-joking, thought it was a bit silly, but now after S11 I feel like we've really missed out on something amazing. Chibnall has tried to play it safe and it ended up quite boring, Brooker would definitely not play it safe.

He's 47, I suppose there's a chance he'll get the show at some point. If Chibnall doesn't kill it.
