Yes

Se7en 20

>has an inaccurate wood grain texture

>second button makes the emitter spin while playing the analyse sound

>has an ugly as fuck battery pull tab slot carved into the handle as well as many visible screw holes on 1 side

Character options

>visually more accurate

>second button is a ‘dummy button’ and does nothing, only there to be prop accurate

>also has screw holes making one side ugly

They are both bad for different reasons, pick your poison. The character options one had a rerelease that made the light brighter but still has the dummy button and no spinning

 No.182124

When certain parts of the fandom here and elsewhere tear into this most recent series, I keep hearing "terrible writing" and "awful scripts" as a monotonous refrain, as if saying it over and over somehow absolves one of the need to qualify these assertions. So, what specifically is "awful?" No one ever gives any examples, and they seem to have absolutely no memory of ACTUALLY poorly-written episodes from previous series.

Personally, I think the writing is clever and funny and has a lot of heart. And in the way of meeting my own criteria, I'll look at what I consider to be one of the weaker episodes from this series: The Tsuranga Conundrum. Setting aside the story itself for a moment, let's just look at a couple of the lines.

First, there's when The Doctor is asked what KIND of Doctor she is, and she says, "Well, medicine, science, engineering, candy floss, LEGO, philosophy, music, problems, people, hope.. . Mostly hope." Such a great line. It starts out as an impressive list of aptitudes, devolves into Pythonesque absurdity, and then finishes off with a thought that not only resonates through the rest of that episode but really through the entirety of the show, both old and new. "A Doctor of Hope." Yes, that's what she (and previously he) has truly always been. And "hope" found its way into another of my favorite lines from that episode: the incantation at the end.

"May the saints of all the stars and constellations bring you hope as they guide you out of the dark and into the light on this voyage and the next and all the journeys still to come. For now and evermore."

First, it's just lovely and rhythmic, which is great. I was moved even just at the sound of it, and then when you look at what it is: this amazing blending of science and faith wrapped in the notion of an eternal journey and all hinged on the word "hope." (And I love the use of the word "constellations," both for its euphony and for the notion that the pattern of the stars is both a map and a library of heroic tales.)

The Tsuranga Conundrum at first glance appeared to be just another unstoppable-monster-on-a-spaceship story, which is not only a common trope in sci-fi, but it's also something of an old saw for this show in particular and usually indicative of laziness coming from the writers' room, and the pregnant man side story looked like it was going to just be some cheap comic relief. When the episode started, I thought, "Really guys? Just phoning this one in, are we?"

But I think that was a deliberate feint. It was meant to look like a "typical" Doctor Who episode: rampaging monster, heroes running through corridors, stodgy military personnel arguing with the Doctor, etc. But then it turned out to be this moving essay on the notion of hope, and the "comic relief" was tied into this, with some really powerful commentary on parenthood and uncertainty. (I'm tiptoeing around spoilers here for those who haven't watched it yet.)

The Tsuranga Conundrum was not my favorite episode this season. It's not even in my top three, but it's a tightly-written script. I really don't see how people can legitimately go after the writers on this show. (I feel like I know why these people ACTUALLY don't like the show, and why they don't want the rest of us to like it, either, but they know that their real beef with the recent changes to DW won't get any traction here in the 21st century, so they've made "bad writing" their metaphorical "W.O.M.D.s in Iraq.")

But this is the same kind of fan who'd say Series 8-10 had "terrible writing" and "awful scripts" without elaborating on it.

The Doctor actually explained a similar idea, once. He uses his companions to better enjoy his adventures. They help him to see the universe anew, because he's so old and has trouble seeing it as interesting.

Reactors watch our favorite shows. We get to relive the excitement of a big twist or revelation or emotional moment, through them.

And sometimes reactors are really clever, or they make smart observations. That reactor often has well-formed opinions, and she pays attention to the story very well, so her investment is appreciated and results in smart ideas that I for one enjoy hearing about.

But Susan fled Gallifrey before this could happen to her, so the Doctor tried to make her witness one for herself— the destruction by an alien race of a planet full of people just like her, who were so similar there were even young women who shared her name.

>But Susan convinced her grandfather that their people were wrong, and persuaded him to intervene to save the world that was supposed to burn. That was when the Doctor saved the Earth for the first time, but it could never be the last— the universe would always try to set things to how they were supposed to have been, and so aliens would invade that planet again and again until one race finally succeeded in destroying it. But the Doctor will stand against them until their final body dies, because a child convinced them that inaction was always wrong. So the Earth is the place where the Doctor broke one oath and took on a better one. It’s the place where she truly rebelled against what it meant to be a Lord of Time.

I think Moff just had so much he'd wanted to say about the character/show built up over his career that when he finally got to Series 5 he couldn't help himself. That scene in particular I think was either supposed to be at the end of Flesh & Stone or the beginning of Vampires of Venice but it couldn't really fit in either place so rather than leave it on the cutting room floor I suppose Moff just figured he'd make it into a minisode. Especially because the scene wouldn't work anywhere else unless he saved it for the next new companion.

A lot of the Moffat-era has moments that feel like things Moffat has wanted to see in the show for so long and finally had the chance to do like the Doctor entering the TARDIS "for the first time" in Husbands or Amy's arc in Series 5 or Clara's arc from Series 8-9. Even in episodes he didn't write like The Doctor's Wife he's responsible for moments like that (the "push to open" line and Idris saying "I always took you where you needed to be"). IIRC Heaven Sent was an idea he was thinking about doing for Big Finish during the wilderness era but decided not to waste it on that just in case.

I know admitting fault is showing weakness blah blah blah, but it's just insulting to the audience to do something so drastic but pretend that it's not even worth discussing. Same with next year being a gap year.

It also doesn't seem like they've tried to put a positive spin on it either, as far as I've seen. They're just treating it as normal.

>>182250

>I doubt moving it to Jan 1st actually means it can never be on Christmas ever again

No, but it's no longer assumed which is a big deal. Even a few months ago nobody, even casual audiences, would anticipate a Christmas without a special. Now we'll never know whether we'll get one or not. Like next year, for example, what's happening then? No episodes at all?

>>182251

I wasn't thinking of the EU at all, that's a whole new mess. BF's relationship with the new series is complicated, I think it's relationship to the classic series will always be far stronger. It's not like they've incorporated any of the new series Doctors into its main range. Tennant has done audios, but there's no indication he's ever going to be a regular the same way the others are. And Smith and Capaldi have never touched it at all. If the show got cancelled now, I highly doubt Jodie would migrate to BF.

I was just picturing the show transitioning from a normal season-based program, to just a yearly special with Jodie (and eventually, her regenerating and the show continuing with someone else). Obviously not an ideal setup and impossible to maintain momentum/develop characters (it could work if the Doctor traveled alone and had special guests ever year, like the Tennant specials), but the Christmas special was so ingrained that I expected it to outlive the show for at least a few years.

You're missing the point. The show existing purely as a yearly special was only imaginable because of how strong the Christmas tradition was.
