 No.18349

>implying I've heard even a single second of the eleven

Okay, here's the brief thing.

He's insane and all of his incarnations do co-exists in him at once and fight for control, so the actor has to do crazy over-the-top acting and speak with himself, like: old aged bored librarian, scottish accented master planner with a love of the word "persona" (obviously, 7th incarnation), annoying child voice, posh snob voice, psychopath screaming all his lines and "good" 8th incarnation with innocent-sounding terrified voice.

Now we'll have all of that with grandma actress. Weird.

how do they actually get new writers? I know a lot of them have been established in doctor who for ages but then there's people like emma beeby, who primarily works in non-doctor who comics but co-wrote 3 audios

 No.18370

>how do they actually get new writers?

James Goss does his job and searches for them and shepherds him in. None of the other producers care to.

BF is trapped in a cycle of producing too much content for anyone to really spend much time fostering new talent. Most of them think they're doing great work and things are fine and sustainable anyway. Goss is the only one who seems to actually have taken a step back and understand the situation.

>He winks. You nod your head and grin mischeviously. "Only stories…" you reply, feeling his warm breath on the back of your neck. Something else presses into your back. It's long and hard and- pointy.

>Hold on, dicks aren't pointy.

>Just as this thought crosses your mind, Nilso shoves the dagger into your back and twists hard. You sigh and fall to the floor as the air leaves your lungs abruptly. You can't even scream.

>Nilso stares at your writhing body and laughs, content with the damage he has wrought upon you. "That's what you get for writing foul stories about me and posting them online, asshole. When the sexual harassment case got thrown out of court, I had to take matters into my own hands and-" He stops.

>Footsteps. A second man steps out of the shadows and stomps on your face, though the pain barely registers being this close to death. Nilso continues: "And THAT'S what you get for revealing the truth. The truth about me and Immigrant." As your eyes close for the last time, you watch the two men hug and walk off together, arm in arm.

>What a beautiful sight to end your life on, and what a shock to know that you had been right all along. Immigrilso really was canon after all.

The best story of his I've experienced is "Signs" from the first River audio set.

The Target novelisation of City of Death is really frustrating in that it's just a sloppily abridged rerelease of Goss' earlier novelisation of City of Death. Apparently chapters and paragraphs are just torn out haphazardly; it's not like a neat abridgement but a really clumsy worse version of the book's 2015 release.

Fun fact: Gareth was originally the one novelising City of Death but dropped out for mysterious reasons. Goss took up the slack. We'll always have Gareth's Shada I guess?

>>18476

I get the impression this was envisioned as a oneoff thing (I hope I'm wrong), but I definitely vastly prefer original writers doing the novelisations…I had hope for Cornell doing a Moff episode, especially one with such weird circumstances, but even with as high a profile writer as him that turned out pretty disappointing. Original writer or bust I guess, since I don't get the impression alternative writers often have the guts to be particularly transformative with other writer's episodes?

What would your top 5 dream choices for NewWho novelisations be?

I'd like

The Doctors Wife novelised by Gaiman - Gaiman's an excellent writer of books, the episode was handicapped by runtime and budget issues, and there are so many ways he'd expand the story and vision. It'd definitely be a genuinely good book.

Human Nature / The Family of Blood novelised by Cornell - the absurdity of him novelising two episodes (with apparently large rewrites from RTD) based on a book he himself wrote sounds really appealing to me; I'd love to compare it to the original Human Nature.

The Time of the Doctor novelised by Moffat - a lot of the magic of the episode was how much it abbreviated so much story, but I'd love an alternate version that instead expanded it significantly. It'd be interesting for Moff to tweak the story a lot and all but do his original Matt Series 8 idea in a novel form.

The End of Time novelised by RTD - such a bizarre, absurd, very specifically RTD episode, I'd love to see a reimagining of it and see how he'd do it differently years later. Actually being inside 10's head would help the story a lot too I think.

The Shakespeare Code novelised by Gareth - I'd like to see Gareth be more indulgent and include the Classic Who references he originally wanted for the episode (like a reference to City of Death where 4 references having met Shakespeare) and go more in depth with the Shakespeare play connections. A story and villain based around words might work better in a book too.

>>18479

I heard (not sure if rumour or true) Moff was asked to do TUAT, said he wanted to do the 50th instead and recommended they ask Cornell to do TUAT instead. So to some degree yeah, it sounds like.

>>18481

Would you like it to be changed much in book form or just expanded a bit? Or do you just think it'd make a good read?

The ones I'd like to see are mostly variations on the ones you'd like to see.

A good version of Nightmare in Silver from Gaiman.

Father's Day from Cornell.

Unicorn and the Wasp from Gareth. (Play up the Christie, obviously)

Most Moffat stories would be great. Admittedly I'd be very interested to see how he'd do The Angels Take Manhattan with the Melody Malone book and all. I know he'd make A Christmas Carol really interesting too.

I'd really love to see a vastly expanded Mummy on the Orient Express—I know Mathieson had to excise heaps from the script.

 No.18485

>>18480

EoT by RTD - fully agreed with you there, it is in a way RTD's Day of the Doctor and it be great to see as a book

Gridlock by anyone good - this ep could use a bigger scale and expand on worldbuilding - such a great setting

The Beast Below - this episode suffered in the production and turned out to be less powerful than it was on paper

first proper adventure with 11 as a book with better worldbuilding could be great

The Lie of the Land (except it's a complete reimagining) - I do believe that ideas buried deep inside this ep are great and they obviously could be explored more. Proper developed dystopia in doctor who world could be great. But the structure and everything should be rethought twice.

The Hungry Earth / Cold Blood - novelisation would be nice to feature everything that got cut because of budget - silurian city, dinosaurs, original Amy's POV narrative structure, it could also flirt with classic silurian eps and the pertwee era (because these eps are obviously very inspired by pertwee). Maybe even include someone from UNIT there.

 No.18568

The one element of the Summer Heights High finale I've never been able to make up my mind on is the reveal that Celene didn't actually die.

The ending of episode 6, hinging on Celene's death, works spectacularly well, and adds a lot of gravity to Mr. G's character and his absurd pomposity and egomania. The embrace with Rodney is a pitch perfect moment to end the episode on.

When we learn Celene didn't actually die in episode 8, there are a few ways to take it. One way, which I don't think Liley intended (although you could read it into the episode with a bit of fuzzing) is that Celene was all but dead and Mr. G was being more pessimistic than melodramatic in acting like she'd already died. Another way is that it was just a grace note of positivity for the finale to try and end the series on a more humorous/positive note (I don't take it this way, and traditionally that really isn't the direction Likely likes to go in).

The third way is that it's a final ultra scathing indictment of Mr. G as a character, and the invalidation of the legitimate emotion in the last scenes of episode 6 is intentional; you feel as manipulated by him and his ego as those around him constantly do. Lying about Celene dying is an ugly, ugly thing, and I think it repositions Mr. G in some ways with less of the depth that the otherwise earned emotions of episode 6 gave him, but on the other hand it retains a kind of purity of character, that gobsmackingly narcissistic teacher type, and that does fit into how he handled the musical in the end.

I think Jonah's dismissive attitude towards his friends wanting to keep harassing people at the end of the finale (while everyone is leaving school for the holidays) serves kind of a similar function; it looks like Jonah has undergone legitimate self-growth, but then it's "undercut" by the reveal of the mass dicktation tags all over the school presumably being the reason he feels so calm and centred. However I think it's a very different scenario because we did see Jonah go through legitimate growth in his reading at Gumnut College. His last act of revenge feels earned to me, and of much lower emotional stakes as it's coming from a teenager acting out against people who quite frankly let him down, rather than coming from a grown man who experienced none such development and presumably will continue to manipulate others just in the name of his ego.
