With 88 days to go until the UK is supposed to leave the EU, however, there was one pointed political reference. When the Doctor tried to call on the cross-border Unified Intelligence Taskforce to help save Sheffield from extermination, she learned that Britain was no longer a member after falling out with her “major international partners”. Another satirical gag was aimed at the cross-planetary force threatening to exterminate the BBC.

coming from someone who loves the look of anamorphic lenses and was really excited when it was announced they were going to use them for S11, I genuinely think they must've gotten shitty poorly used ones for cheap and Chibnall figured all lenses are the same or something because I honestly can't think of another explanation for why everything looks so shit. I don't think cropping from 2.39:1 to 2:1 helps but still.

Actually here's a test I just did using a anamorphic lens simulator thing on my phone (not using an actual anamorphic lens). The first one is just a regular 16:9 image cropped to 2:1, the second is using the anamorphic thing and cropped from 2.39:1 to 2:1. Slight drop in quality but I just did this fairly quickly so I wouldn't give it too much weight desu

but how does that work? do they have cybernetic components mixed into their DNA? How does chamberless teleportation work in a universe where it's established that teleported bodies are 3d printer-like copies?

 No.184755

>>184754

Well, let's reason it out. The original bits vanish and the main bit gets larger every time. So let's assume, since they're able to survive anything and live forever, that Daleks can run together like mercury if they've been chopped up and then set next to each other. Based on that, perhaps the Scouts have something inside them that acts as a distributed teleportation matrix? We know they have really good nanotech based on how they can fill humans with Dalek parts remotely, plus everything we see inside the shell.

Combine that with the bit we learned before about how they can absorb radiation and energy to power them, and it would suggest the Dalek mutant might be able to teleport without its shell. Now, what I wonder is whether it can also emergency temporal shift without its shell?

5/10, Chibnall's third best script for Who behind 42 and Power. Scenes with Tosin and Dad were fine. One-off Dalek design good. Pretension of narration and titles is laughable. Comedy was horrible, especially that dreadful cutaway to the family. Jodie and dialogue are still shit. Tosin and Dad's story arc went nowhere, Ryan deciding to save him is such an inconsequential thing and doesn't say anything about either character.

I enjoyed it, I liked the Ryan/Aaron stuff apart from how it ended, I think Ryan should have still been angry at his dad, even after saving him. It didn't sit right with me that Ryan did everything and then his dad was magically forgiven

I enjoyed the Dalek, thought it was quite a threat, I liked the design and how it built its own body, similar to 13 building her sonic in the premiere. It taking over Lins body was also pretty cool.

The plot was meh, the 3 separate dalek pieces felt really underbaked as an idea, only slightly more baked than the resolution which was to run around and distract the dalek so everyone else could stick Aarons disassembled microwave to it, which melts sheffield steel apparently. Also the part where 13 tried to get rid of the dalek by opening a squid sized vacuum corridor to suck it into a supernova was an incredibly stupid idea. 13 is really incompetent.

I also wasn't a fan of representation via someone who casually mentions a same-sex relationship 5 seconds before death

I loved how the tardis interior was filmed, the best its looked all series. I hated the title cards. That was like someone watched Captain America Civil War and tried to replicate it in Microsoft Word. It was laughable. Also the family with the wifi going off was absolute trash, I didn't care for the call center bit either.

Aaron works it out on his own after he asks what the Dalek is made out of and it isn't until later when he asks Ryan to help him get the element out that 13 starts to understand.

So the implication is that the microwave could destroy it on its own in the first place.

Which I don't actually care about, I just think the whole thing was weird.

They were seemingly intentionally vague about the plan then as it's happening 13 launches into a ridiculous exposition dump that's shes trying to shout over the sounds of the Dalek exploding and screaming, and the music crescendoing. It was a weird mess of a sequence

Strip out everything that makes a Dalek story except for the absolute bare minimum. Be willing to jettison even that, because you're not sure the Nation Estate is going to play along after Back in Action. Boil down, reduce, until you have some undeniable irreducible essence of Dalek. Then, and this is by far the most important part, make sure you have an actually good actor playing the Doctor, one who recognizes that he's playing a survivor of genocide personally confronting someone who helped cause that genocide. You can't throw this at your bog standard drunk BBC regular, no, you need a Proper Actor.

And then it comes out like heaven.

Ha ha.

No, but seriously, this first series had a lot to deal with in terms of setting up new characters and a new Doctor, with some new behind-the-scenes stuff as well. Now that this groundwork is set up, now the next series can really go more in-depth, with more complex character dynamics. I aldo suspect 13 will get more layers and better know herself, as Jodie will get more comfortable and maybe add some personal details to her performance.

Yeah. Staggerring Yaz in might have helped.

This is a tough one, Bond.

Julian Bleach delivers a performance that can go to any level necessary, he can be quiet Davros and he can be shouty Davros and he can take you up and down the scales in between. That being said, that original Davros performance is still relatively unique in how restrained it is. Put another way, if there's one iconic problem with Julian Bleach's Davros, it's that he's visibly not paralyzed at all, whereas Wisher's Davros is completely motionless from the shoulders down and sells it believably.

 No.185013

exactly, Bleach is more expressive but Wisher was literally unable to move his face or body and still gave a goat performance despite this

To go back to this, there's a part in Journey's End, right before he activates the reality bomb, where Davros sorta wiggles his whole body in his chair, it's this full shudder from his (nonexistent) pelvis up his (presumably totally fused) spine to the tip of his scalp, he squirms and it's this wonderfully gross moment that gives him that little Peter Sellers flair that latter-day Davroses have all reveled in. In fact, when thinking of gross Davros moments, my mind always brings up that and the moment in Remembrance where we can see him drooling black slime from his rotten teeth.

Meanwhile, in Genesis, it's clear that he's got control of a bit of one arm, his mouth, and not even his whole throat (hence the modulator), and yet he's able to hold the stage against Tom Baker, a feat even BBC greats tended to retreat from.

 No.185016

>>185008

Yeah, but TWF was in part about revealing Davros' emotions…but he was still being a madman evil genius even in this story, so having him be an evil genius in the next story doesn't negate his previous eps' arc that much. But TDF is in part about the Master finally moving past being an evil schemer to starting to be good.Having the Master return to being evil schemer, rather than at least a more complicated morally grey instead of evil character, feels like much more of a waste, as it basically negates their growth

I think that's very close-minded.

For starters, you could do the Master as morally dark but not outright villainous and still have that work, and you could build an arc from there to some true moral outrage and have it be a beautifully poetic and in-character journey. Missy alludes to this in one of the best parts of Lie of the Land, but imagine, say, if the Master was still Prime Minister during the 456 event.

When it was announced that there was going to be no Dr Who Xmas Special from Chibknob and Shittaker this year, I thought I might as well try and plug the gap. With only four specials left to fan edit I thought I might as well tackle them next before going back to my original plan of tackling the two-parters first. And so here is the first of the four, which I did in chronological order, The Opera Singer And The Shark.

Before we get into the edit itself, a blatant timey-wimey Dickens rip-off, the first thing to say is that just because a special episode goes out at Christmas, that doesn’t automatically mean it has to be set at Christmas. Second thing to say is that Katherine Jenkins is a phwoar-tastic bit of very talented Taffy Crumpet who should be on any straight bloke’s To Do Wish List. [Objectification Alert! Heterosexual Male Gaze detected! Male finding attractive female sexually desireable! Exterminate him!] And I say that on purpose in that hope that it will cause any SJW NPCs reading it to spontaneously combust with offence.

So now that Doctor Who is over for over an year, I did a ranking of all NewWho episodes. I grouped specials with series (because I feel like it) and used preference revealer (https://czeckd.github.io/preference-revealer/). I tried to be as honest and as cold-blooded as possible. Obviously I didn't rewatch most of these in months or maybe even years, but I decided to do it just straight away.

Top 10:

Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways

Heaven Sent

The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang

Last Christmas

A Christmas Carol

Smith and Jones

The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances

Love and Monsters

The Day of the Doctor

The End of Time

Bottom 10:

In the Forest of the Night

Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS

The Tsuranga Conundrum

The Doctor’s Daughter

The Crimson Horror

The Curse of the Black Spot

Nightmare in Silver

A Town Called Mercy

The Idiot’s Lantern

Fear Her

The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos

I calculated an average standing position for every series too, results are as following:

S1 (avg 33,7)

S5 (avg 37,7)

S3 (avg 51,4)

S4 (avg 56,2)

S8 (avg 57,9)

S9 (avg 65)

S6 (avg 73,8)

S10 (avg 79,6)

S11 (avg 85,5)

S7 (avg 96,2)

I guess Demons and certain other episode carried S11 massively for me. It doesn't feel quite right but judging by preference revealer I found it better on average.

Prolonged exposure to any sort of community, especially a very ingroupy closeminded one, will affect not just what but also how you think depending on how much time you spend there for sure. Feel free to make the obvious gag.

Remember when someone said that New Years Day was the day that everything was closed and everyone was hungover, and then the TARDIS team said the exact same thing later in the episode? And the punchline to that scene was Ryan calling the dalek a "monster" for shutting wi-fi down on New Years, and then the NEXT scene was the exact same joke but painfully drawn out and with totally irrelevant characters?

Does Chibnall have fucking dementia?

No don't you see, it was setup.

Chibnall establishes early on that it's New Years Day, the day where everything is closed and everyone is hungover so later on when we hear that it's New Years Day and everything is closed and everyone is hungover we know it to be true.

These two moments are important because they provide the necessary foundation for the climax of the joke, without it we wouldn't understand why turning off the wi-fi is such a big deal. It's New Years day where everything is closed and everyone is hungover so everyone must be at home, probably on a device with an internet connection since it's 2019. Not having any connection to the internet would be disastrous. Then Chibnall has the Ryan moment AND the scene with the family to really drive home the punchline.

Chibnall really is a meticulous and talented writer. You'd never see that sort of setup and payoff for such a socially important yet narratively trivial joke in a moffet episode
