Damn, that Dalek got a fat ass!

I'm really missing the opening being played, are they preparing for it to go on Netflix as people don't like openings now?

lmao that scene where she pulls over and nabs a cop is straight out of MiB 2

The aerial shots of the Dalek slaughtering everyone and then huge plumes of black smoke enveloping the field were genuinely kino.

was kinda boring and drawn out. ooooh big explosions, shooty shooty bam bam. looked cool, sure, but ultimately banal

Netflix shows have openings though.

Looking cool is honestly the most you can expect from a generic dalek battle scene. The writing was bad but the direction was trying its best.

not BM

>Netflix shows have openings though.

Yes but it automatically skips them which is really annoying

Even Black Mirror has an opening, it's just super short (and it's the same on Netflix as it was back when it started on UK's Channel 4).

Other countries have a Channel 4?

super short = nothing

The thick of it has the title on a black screen which is a super short opening but nobody would call it that

what? no, it gives you the option to skip them but you have to click the button.

When you've finished an episode and the click on the play next it automatically skips it

Okay but Black Mirror has a distinct sequence lasting about 10-15 seconds complete with its own specific animation and sound design.

Ok, yeah. But if you're binge watching like that you'll probably skip the intro after a while anyway.

After a while but not after 1 episode

>arwel talking about how the scrap design "makes it feel a bit more real"

>actual episode is full of bad CGI shots of it

I still can't get over that the Doctor's plan at the end was just to open the doors to let the Dalek get sucked out into space and hoping that for some reason Ryan's dad wouldn't get sucked out? even though he had nothing to hold on to?

and then she was surprised when it wasn't working wtf remember when the Doctor used to defeat enemies by being clever or using their plans against them?

>open the doors to let the Dalek get sucked out into space and hoping that for some reason Ryan's dad wouldn't get sucked out?

But anon! The vacuum corridor was exactly big enough to only affect the Dalek!

Until it fucking wasn't

I think that she was honestly just desperate to kill the Dalek, this Doctor likes to play the moral card but I bet she wouldn't have been too bothered if Aaron died with the Dalek, she was so desperate for hersenpaito see that she'd given the Dalek a choice, she wants to maintain the pretense of higher morality but in reality she's the actual dark doctor we've been waiting for, darker than Capaldi, Capaldi was a sweetheart compared to her

>she was so desperate for hersenpaito see that she'd given the Dalek a choice, she wants to maintain the pretense of higher morality

See, I thought that was weird because giving a fucking Dalek "a chance", given what she knows about them, is an utter failure of morality. She kept telling it to "leave this planet!" like she was fine with it running off and slaughtering other planets!

i don't think the dalek jumping on someone's back and mind controlling them is annoying me as much as it should

imagine hearing this and thinking "yeah this is good but you know what would be better? a alternative rock drum beat"

It's not really a bad idea, a Dalek is by design a "pilot" of another entity (usually a tank) so it's just using a different kind of vehicle. And in this case it adds the creepy factor of literally possessing a human being.

I saw this comment on a video of A Dazzling End from the Series 4 soundtrack earlier today and I wanted to stick my thumbs in my eyes

Gold's Moffat-era OST is genuinely too intelligent for these people

>It's probably still not actually a good episode, but it's the best Chibnall's written and I enjoyed it a lot.

slightly blackpilled take from 🐱 pussy-hallard 🐱 there

Where's the DAMN MEGA

I enjoyed watching the gritty reboot of Dalek from S1.

post favourite gold scenes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AxCoMbiZfk probably this for me, one of the most triumphant moments in who, gets me excited whenever i watch it

he never stopped composing iconic music and he matched the tone of each doctor's era perfectly. people are like 'it's too camp i don't want to be told how to feel' turn the sound down and just read the subtitles then

i'm sad he's gone but it's good to remember ridiculously unlikely is is that we had him for 12 years

i love that he was the composer for so long that he was able to nostalgically call back to his own tracks

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play.

Chibnall's era is just things from the past of the show but done really badly. The ending of this episode was just taking the ending of The Enemy of the World but executing it really awfully

why was there a narrator bookending the special lol

lin tentacle porn

Because Chibnall promised us it was going to be epic and epic things have narration in them

what's wrong with iPlayer or iview

I really like the swirling colourful light through the police box windows while they are in the time vortex. It's a great touch.

Not that anon but I want to download this shit so I can take screencaps

I've gushed about this before but the transition from Clara's theme to the Doomsday/Bad Wolf theme at 2:24 is absolutely magical

who the fuck was the narrator? at first I thought it was going to be Ryan's dad but it wasn't

You can youtube-dl iplayer.

iplayer episodes have BBC watermarks in the corner you OAF

another one - the bit when the doctor turns to rose and the music swells is BRILLIANT. it's so unapologetic in how it boldly defies logic in favour of creating an emotional moment.

great choice. i love the use of that guitar in 12's era, and that kind of reversed sound

the reprisal of This is Gallifrey that plays the second the Crack appears is incredible but Gold following it up with The Doctor's Theme, Series 4 is the cherry on top.

Still crazy that I Am The Doctor isn't used once in that episode tho

Very correct taste right here

Also this scene (cant find the full version)

The Curator.

blessed (and should have been 12's regeneration music)

i can't hear a second of that track without feeling like i'm gonna tear up

Have to admit Jodie was pretty meh this ep

I hate how loud the guitar is on that track. Like the orchestra is playing this beautiful piece and the entire time you just have someone plodding along on an electric guitar in your ear

that's fair, i love it and it does become more subdued in the mix by 1:21

Hahaha! It's funny because it doesn't offend anyone!

This really says a lot about the society we live in

Unironically NPC humour. That scene could have contained almost any dialogue and this tweet would still exist.

felt like a weird aside in a marvel film, like thor 2, but with shit humour anyone could come up with

like it's not even just unoriginal, it's literally a joke everyone's made

skip to any scene, it'll be infinitely funnier

Jacob go on /who/

>why do they call him spider-man, don't they like him?

that's such a funny line i don't know why

>Cringe? What? One of the best scenes in doctor who weve ever had. So funny and meta of todays society

>I enjoyed that scene. I saw it as a great reference.

he's got a point there actually. chibnall's jokes seem like perfunctory callbacks to when doctor who had funny bits in it, kind of like how he does other homages

Resolution was unironically the best thing Chibnall's written so far in his tenure.

More on screen Dalek kills than the entire Moffat era.

>felt like a weird aside in a marvel film

Same with the tension-breaking "Now, I need to remember… How long's a rel?".

I’d put this as worse than TWWFTE myself. Woman wasn’t THAT bad, not good by any means, but I didn’t come out the other side feeling as exhausted as I did with Resolution.

I did unironically like "how long's a rel?" just because I feel there isn't enough rel humour in Doctor Who

Honestly, I didn't think UNIT being disbanded was that awful of a thing, I kinda liked it desu

It was just an overlong excuse to not have them in the story. It was kind of weird seeing the Doctor tout them so much given her fractious relationship with them.

it's crazy that there isn't a mega yet. I don't mind since I watched it on that twitch stream but it's weird considering the longest it took a S11 episode to go up was like 3 hours after it aired

If you watch Resolution via an official source, just know that when Chibnall apologists cite high viewing figures, you are part of the problem

maximally redpilled

What will the overnights be? About 8 million?

sorry n8 :( iPlayer is just so convinient. I'm prolonging the chib

Anyone who thinks Chib Who is even close to OK just fuck off /who/ and never come back OK?

OK, will do

/who/ is mine

I used to think I'd keep watching the show no matter what out of nostlgia, but im not sure now. I'll probably hang around /who/ to talk about the other 30 something seasons but… jesus…. it's just that bad

This, it's literally impossible for me to watch the episode right now and I'm even willing to pay for it, no streaming sites have it up for purchase

Why did chibnall design Woman and Resolution to be "cinematic" experiences, instead of making the whole series tonally like that? is it a budget thing?

I get told I'm playing Doctor Who a lot

Me with Chibnall Who.

The "have a conversation" scene had this sort of energy.

The "have a conversation" scene was really so powerful… it really made me think, what would it be like if we had no wifi or phone reception? What if things were still like how they were when we grew up? It's so easy to miss what's in front of you in these modern times, and I have Chris Chibnall to thank for this revelation. I think we should all make it our new years resolution to spend less time on our devices and talk to the people in front of us!

One-off Dalek reinventions are a good idea and I'd like to see more

the concept of a one-off dalek should stay a one-off

Like when David Tennant said that Daleks in Manhattan would have Deco Daleks, imagine if that actually happened. Imagine Daleks redesigned in the styles of all sorts of artists and movements.

I feel like the RTD-era Daleks already looked pretty Art Deco-y

With 88 days to go until the UK is supposed to leave the EU, however, there was one pointed political reference. When the Doctor tried to call on the cross-border Unified Intelligence Taskforce to help save Sheffield from extermination, she learned that Britain was no longer a member after falling out with her “major international partners”. Another satirical gag was aimed at the cross-planetary force threatening to exterminate the BBC.

Well, I dunno about you guys but after that I'm genuinely stoked. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Doctor Who does in 2019. Now, is it gonna be a spring series or are they making us wait until fall again?

Can the tardis not make a shield that extends more than a few meters around the police box?

I got the impression it's literally still the Extrapolator wired into the console somewhere.

>>>>>>>implying this was better than Into the Dalek

ITD isn't a dalek episode, it's a kaled episode

Wayne Yip did it, he managed to make 13s tardis interior feel like a tardis interior

the table pulled a lot of the weight

I don't know, it definitely helped but there were quite a few scenes in the interior where the table wasn't the star

Hell, following the male archeologist in through the doors was a better reveal than the actual reveal in The Ghost Monument. Had it just stayed on his back the whole time instead of the second or two cut to his face it would have been approaching kino

Talalay approved

desu i thought the episode still kinda looked like shit despite having a Moffat-era director and the cinematographer of Heaven Sent/Hell Bent.

coming from someone who loves the look of anamorphic lenses and was really excited when it was announced they were going to use them for S11, I genuinely think they must've gotten shitty poorly used ones for cheap and Chibnall figured all lenses are the same or something because I honestly can't think of another explanation for why everything looks so shit. I don't think cropping from 2.39:1 to 2:1 helps but still.

Actually here's a test I just did using a anamorphic lens simulator thing on my phone (not using an actual anamorphic lens). The first one is just a regular 16:9 image cropped to 2:1, the second is using the anamorphic thing and cropped from 2.39:1 to 2:1. Slight drop in quality but I just did this fairly quickly so I wouldn't give it too much weight desu

hotter take: it was a barely mediocre episode and it was still by far one of chibnall's best

This but actually unironically because it was literally the only scene this series besides "WHERE'S THE RELOAD" where I actively enjoyed Tosin's performance which I cherish because I still think Ryan is the most interesting character of the new TARDIS team.

Literal and unironic virtue signalling to smugly grab moral high ground which is so hilariously unneeded when your opponent is a fucking DALEK

Terence Dudley just gets fucking ruined in the Davison era dvd commentaries

I also enjoyed the shadow puppets and the whole grime thing in Arachnids, his casual "how do you know your dad didn't just leave you?" to Hanne in ITYA, and the "maybe she cries herself to sleep at night" line which he then chuckles to himself about in The Witchfinders.

I think Ryan is the most interesting too, I think I like him more than Graham. There are some little moments for every character where I really like them, it's just that for the most part it's all pretty terrible

Why was the tardis going through the time vortex when it was just doing location jumps?

how do you think it gets to those locations?

By jumping through space, not flying through time

the "time vortex" is really the "time and space vortex", just easier to say

So daleks can just teleport their body pieces to rebuild if they get cut up?

A scout can. She specifies it as being different from the common soldiers, which presumably includes the titular Dalek, Clara, Rusty, and a lot of the other ones we've seen over the years.

but how does that work? do they have cybernetic components mixed into their DNA? How does chamberless teleportation work in a universe where it's established that teleported bodies are 3d printer-like copies?

Well, let's reason it out. The original bits vanish and the main bit gets larger every time. So let's assume, since they're able to survive anything and live forever, that Daleks can run together like mercury if they've been chopped up and then set next to each other. Based on that, perhaps the Scouts have something inside them that acts as a distributed teleportation matrix? We know they have really good nanotech based on how they can fill humans with Dalek parts remotely, plus everything we see inside the shell.

Combine that with the bit we learned before about how they can absorb radiation and energy to power them, and it would suggest the Dalek mutant might be able to teleport without its shell. Now, what I wonder is whether it can also emergency temporal shift without its shell?

what was the point of making this a new years day special? all of the new years eve references were just "hey remember that stuff that happened off-screen". It's not like if all the RTD-era episodes were on Halloween and Moffat decided to move it to Christmas so he could do A Christmas Carol.

they didn't even acknowledge the fucking scarf

In the UK, new years day is a big thing where a lot of dramas start. He was probably banking on getting better ratings than a christmas episode. He was very clearly trying to pander to normies with the game of thrones bullshit at the start, which had absolutely no purpose other than to get the attention of those demographics.

We'll have to wait and see if his gamble paid off

Why NOT make it a New Year's Day special?

I want to hear everyone's take on Resolution. What did you think of the special? I want to hear everything anyone here has to say.

They forgot them!

I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would, found it decent overall. The scenes about Aaron were the strong point of the episode.

5/10, Chibnall's third best script for Who behind 42 and Power. Scenes with Tosin and Dad were fine. One-off Dalek design good. Pretension of narration and titles is laughable. Comedy was horrible, especially that dreadful cutaway to the family. Jodie and dialogue are still shit. Tosin and Dad's story arc went nowhere, Ryan deciding to save him is such an inconsequential thing and doesn't say anything about either character.

This was noticeably more zoomer-y than other Chib stories, with the family cutaway and the "instant replier" relationship and the "skillz with a zed". Some of it was clearly meant to be self-aware but that doesn't make it any less repellent.

Skillz with a Z was funny and perfectly fits 13’s ‘lame but tries to be cool’ personality

I wouldn't even laugh at that if a friend said it and I was trying to be polite

not 'haha' funny, but 'I appreciate the lighthearted tone' funny

the CGI one was textured differently and used different lighting. The physical one does have darker bumps compared to the body, but it's so corroded and dark that you can't make out the colors. I think it is still intended to be silver and blue though

Did the lack of a plunger verge anyone else?

would you rather a joke scene where the dalek went to a hardware store to buy a plunger?

I unironically think it would be a rare opportunity to do a bit of a self-deprecating joke, and the one time it would've made perfect sense, Chib sidesteps it.

What does chibnall think a rel is?

>Given that rels are established to be 1.2 seconds in TV: Evolution of the Daleks, the 9376 rels mentioned in TV: Resolution are approximately equivalent to 3 hours, 7 minutes and 31 seconds.

For some reason I thought the dalek said 9.376 rels with a decimal point, rather than nine thousand

Did he forget that a rel is equal to roughly a second not minute?

The dalek says "nine three seven six rels" doesn't it? Poor wording, it's an easy misinterpretation

looks like a fucking student film

I enjoyed it, I liked the Ryan/Aaron stuff apart from how it ended, I think Ryan should have still been angry at his dad, even after saving him. It didn't sit right with me that Ryan did everything and then his dad was magically forgiven

I enjoyed the Dalek, thought it was quite a threat, I liked the design and how it built its own body, similar to 13 building her sonic in the premiere. It taking over Lins body was also pretty cool.

The plot was meh, the 3 separate dalek pieces felt really underbaked as an idea, only slightly more baked than the resolution which was to run around and distract the dalek so everyone else could stick Aarons disassembled microwave to it, which melts sheffield steel apparently. Also the part where 13 tried to get rid of the dalek by opening a squid sized vacuum corridor to suck it into a supernova was an incredibly stupid idea. 13 is really incompetent.

I also wasn't a fan of representation via someone who casually mentions a same-sex relationship 5 seconds before death

I loved how the tardis interior was filmed, the best its looked all series. I hated the title cards. That was like someone watched Captain America Civil War and tried to replicate it in Microsoft Word. It was laughable. Also the family with the wifi going off was absolute trash, I didn't care for the call center bit either.

I don't know if I like it better than ITYA but it's in the top 3 Chibnall Who stories for me so far, with Demons of the Punjab at the top.

>Aarons disassembled microwave to it, which melts sheffield steel apparently

I can excuse that by assuming that 13 superpowered it

Risking blowing this on a thread instead of a /who/ cares but I found it interesting that the villain of this episode is Iron Man. Between that and the UNIT stuff I halfway wonder if there's some Military Industrial Complex commentary going on

The family and the call center gags were chibnall trying to keep up with marvel

I probably wouldn't mind the title cards if they used a better looking font.

More importantly, why did this text not have the shadow when all the rest did? Why was there zero consistency between the different text cards? How much of a rush job was it?

I thought it was a laughable attempt at shoehorning the concept of "hope" into the episode, like he's done with every other S11 episode. I genuinely laughed when I heard them first say it

>The Doctor gets kidnapped by Abraham Lincoln and Karl Marx

Aaron works it out on his own after he asks what the Dalek is made out of and it isn't until later when he asks Ryan to help him get the element out that 13 starts to understand.

So the implication is that the microwave could destroy it on its own in the first place.

Which I don't actually care about, I just think the whole thing was weird.

They were seemingly intentionally vague about the plan then as it's happening 13 launches into a ridiculous exposition dump that's shes trying to shout over the sounds of the Dalek exploding and screaming, and the music crescendoing. It was a weird mess of a sequence

Is it bad that I actually wasn't sure if they were going to kill aaron off or not?

>GCHQ is the only one with no shadow

>"present day" is misaligned across the titles

>They're clearly the same size font just squished or stretched out to fill the screen

I wouldn't be surprised if they did it fucking yesterday. Not to mention that apart from GCHQ none of them were actually relevant. We either didn't need to know or it was Sheffield and we found out in dialogue 2 minutes later

I agree with mallard, it's not exactly intellectual like Moffat's Dalek stories but having a Dalek possess a human is probably the creepiest they've been in a very long time.

To me, Chibwho feels like this very surreal hybrid of Classic Who and New Who, although it doesn't necessarily mix the highlights of both. I generally judge S11's episodes with the mindset that it's effectively a classic Who episode and for some reason I end up enjoying it more than I would if I saw it as a New Who episode.

It's different from 12, who just didn't care that much sometimes and other times didn't know when to be less direct, or 11, who was just really silly. 13's more like someone trying to speak a language that's not quite theirs, but clearly cares about getting it right.

Also, 13's a more fallible Doctor (often making mistakes), but that gets supplanted by her willingness to constantly improvise on the spot.

It can't be…

He wasn't interested in using the daleks for a traditional "dalek attack" story, more specifically

"Daleks should be threatening and go shooty bang and make things explode!" gives you Terry Nation stories and Resolution. "Daleks should be an exploration of fascism, racism, imperialism, genocide and eugenics" gives you Jubilee. Pick one.

Of course when you do both in tandem you get Remembrance, which is GOAT

Doing both also got us Into the Dalek.

There is a value in doing a simple thing perfectly, considering how often people attempt to do simple things and fail.

Saward's Dalek stories are based

"Into The Dalek" is kinda good tho.

Revalation is

It's definitely the better one.

By the way, Yaz's police training subtly came up in the "we've got your details now" dialogue.

That's what I mean. Into The Dalek gives us the simple pleasure of little RC tanks shooting death rays at sci fi soldiers only filmed with gorgeous cinematography, and filters it in with a harrowing and incredible tale weaving a tale of propaganda, imperialism, eugenics, and that last and most often forgotten bit of the Dalek recipe: Cosmic horror.

Wow! Holy fucking shit!

just incredible…

I'm taking what I can get.

>I think Resolution actually sort of hinted at that "cosmic horror" with the way that the Dalek mutant takes over Linn

Only in the same way that every other Pertwee story is "cosmic horror".

Strip out everything that makes a Dalek story except for the absolute bare minimum. Be willing to jettison even that, because you're not sure the Nation Estate is going to play along after Back in Action. Boil down, reduce, until you have some undeniable irreducible essence of Dalek. Then, and this is by far the most important part, make sure you have an actually good actor playing the Doctor, one who recognizes that he's playing a survivor of genocide personally confronting someone who helped cause that genocide. You can't throw this at your bog standard drunk BBC regular, no, you need a Proper Actor.

And then it comes out like heaven.

How do you bring back the Master and Davros after TDF and TWF respectively? It must be impossible for a writer to continue those threads organically. And that's a good good thing

You're 1: Obviously refusing to accept the implications of an ancient undead squid creature wrapping itself around and inside a woman and piloting her to make her do its bidding and destroy the planet

and 2: Seemingly ignoring that a lot of Pertwee *is* cosmic horror.

Davros can come back easy peasy, that story literally ends with a restoration of status quo and him having another wacky "team rocket blasting off again" outcome that he can miraculously survive.

I do like how 13 acknowledged that fighting the Daleks is a game she's been playing for a long time. She's past the War angst, but she still recognizes the history.

>More like she's taking extended breaks in between weekdays

Outside of demons, there's been nothing to suggest they have a clara/bill "doctor picks them up but they still lives their normal lives" arrangement. Resolution seemed so suggest they've just been with the doctor based on how ryan explained it to aaron

They've yet to do a Davros story that follows on organically from the threads of Remembrance, or a Master story that concludes the entire zombie Master arc that ran from the Deadly Assassin to the TV Movie. Doctor Who is 50 years old, it's okay to just move on and do something new with the same elements every few years.

Yeah but it'll be weird when whoever picks up Davros again doesn't bother to continue the emotional and circumstantial thread

Literally more inhuman than the Dalek laugh scene

Thoughts on skelly Master in EoT being a continuation of zombie Master arc?

>They've yet to do a Davros story that follows on organically from the threads of Remembrance

The threads of Remembrance are really the Time War, and Stolen Earth obviously spins out of that. Zombie Master isn't really emotional arc either, it's just kind of implicit with the Master's personality.

>flipping heck!

It's a recapturing of the iconography and… actually, now that you mention it, that episode is about him stealing bodies, isn't it?

Okay, yeah, you convinced me.

Good take.

I picked up on it, but it does feel underused. I felt Ryan and Graham's arc was good enough in Series 11, but Yasmin got very little to do imo. I hope they focus on her more in s12

What's up

Resolution felt like SJA

stream for a mo, ta love

Same. They're gonna need to start going more in-depth in characters, as they basically dealt with the original arcs laid out.

>They're gonna need to start going more in-depth in characters

I don't really agree. It'll only be their second series. It's a bit early to start making expectations or, heaven forbid, judging.

The thing about the emotional thread is that TWF demonstrates, quite explicitly, that even though the Doctor and Davros have had this rare moment of honesty and confession they can still snap back to being the same old bitter enemies. And paradoxically, they can only be truly honest to each other when they're pulling schemes on each other.

Honestly if I could change one thing in Series 11, I would make it so that the companions get staggered in. Maybe like how Series 5 introduced Amy Pond and Rory in the first episode, Introduced River Song a few episodes later, and then added Rory as a full companion shortly after in the Venice episode, before finally in the finale we have a 3 person TARDIS team. Then in the Series 6 opener, it doesn't feel weird to have the three companions because we feel like we know them well enough individually

The thing about emotional threads is they take time.

Yeah but I'm just saying the next Davros story will need to go to extraordinary lengths not to feel like a step backwards from "the brink-of-death-emotional-outpour-one"

Ha ha.

No, but seriously, this first series had a lot to deal with in terms of setting up new characters and a new Doctor, with some new behind-the-scenes stuff as well. Now that this groundwork is set up, now the next series can really go more in-depth, with more complex character dynamics. I aldo suspect 13 will get more layers and better know herself, as Jodie will get more comfortable and maybe add some personal details to her performance.

Yeah. Staggerring Yaz in might have helped.

True, but it's also going to need to go to those lengths to compete with a Moffat story to begin with.

how can other writers compete

fuck offerino, don't insult SJA

muh kids show that boomers love

This is a tough one, Bond.

Julian Bleach delivers a performance that can go to any level necessary, he can be quiet Davros and he can be shouty Davros and he can take you up and down the scales in between. That being said, that original Davros performance is still relatively unique in how restrained it is. Put another way, if there's one iconic problem with Julian Bleach's Davros, it's that he's visibly not paralyzed at all, whereas Wisher's Davros is completely motionless from the shoulders down and sells it believably.

exactly, Bleach is more expressive but Wisher was literally unable to move his face or body and still gave a goat performance despite this

To go back to this, there's a part in Journey's End, right before he activates the reality bomb, where Davros sorta wiggles his whole body in his chair, it's this full shudder from his (nonexistent) pelvis up his (presumably totally fused) spine to the tip of his scalp, he squirms and it's this wonderfully gross moment that gives him that little Peter Sellers flair that latter-day Davroses have all reveled in. In fact, when thinking of gross Davros moments, my mind always brings up that and the moment in Remembrance where we can see him drooling black slime from his rotten teeth.

Meanwhile, in Genesis, it's clear that he's got control of a bit of one arm, his mouth, and not even his whole throat (hence the modulator), and yet he's able to hold the stage against Tom Baker, a feat even BBC greats tended to retreat from.

Yeah, but TWF was in part about revealing Davros' emotions…but he was still being a madman evil genius even in this story, so having him be an evil genius in the next story doesn't negate his previous eps' arc that much. But TDF is in part about the Master finally moving past being an evil schemer to starting to be good.Having the Master return to being evil schemer, rather than at least a more complicated morally grey instead of evil character, feels like much more of a waste, as it basically negates their growth

I agree. I kind of don't want to see another Master story in the show now. I'm super happy with how that emotional journey finally ended

I'd be fine with either a "Master now is trying to do good, but is messing it up or having unforeseen consequences" or "Doctor meets incarnation between Missy and Simms"

File: 0e5bb731bc4602b⋯.png (1.38 MB, 1954x1042, 977:521, fuck blue lives.png)

This is now the most political image in all of Doctor Who.

Ugh, feminism.

I think that's very close-minded.

For starters, you could do the Master as morally dark but not outright villainous and still have that work, and you could build an arc from there to some true moral outrage and have it be a beautifully poetic and in-character journey. Missy alludes to this in one of the best parts of Lie of the Land, but imagine, say, if the Master was still Prime Minister during the 456 event.

Actually it's about the police's ruling class as a government subsidiary being brutalised towards the working class and people of colour, but I suppose if the patriarchy is destroyed along with the current justice system it wouldn't be so bad.

It's the most political image in the Chibnall era, but that's like winning the Year 1 three-legged race on sports day.

this episode was all about killing white guys - the most discriminated people in society

Surely that would be the poppies in Demons, or the monitors in Kerblam

Not a single gamer was killed.

implying those soldiers didn't join the armed forces during peace time because they were inspired by call of duty

Currently watching The Sensorites and Susan just said

>Isn't it a better thing to travel hopefully than arrive?

I wonder if Chibnall had that in mind when writing 13s leaving speech in the battle of ranskoor av kolos

what was the context of that line?

they trained for this

One of the crew members was confused about the tardis team

>CAROL: You're very strange people.

>SUSAN: Are we?

>CAROL: Well, you've come from nowhere and you seem to be going nowhere.

>BARBARA: We're very dependant on the Doctor. He leads and we follow.

>CAROL: Travel without a purpose?

>BARBARA: Oh, no, there's a purpose in it. He's trying to get us back to our own time. On Earth.

>CAROL: Oh, I see.

>SUSAN: Isn't it a better thing to travel hopefully than arrive?

The fact the human relationships underpinned that high stakes drama made the episode for me. Very satisfied with the focus on Ryan and Aaron. Really really great emotional writing. I've missed that. #DoctorWho

That awkward moment when you get shot by your wife, in front of your wife, who then proceeds to try kill your wife, while your best friend is to the side pregnant…

wasn't Amy already a ganger at that point? so technically she wasn't pregnant. I always thought she was replaced by the ganger when the Silence kidnapped her in Day of the Moon because that would make sense but IIRC Moffat either said in an interview or it's stated later in Series 6 that she was replaced between A Christmas Carol and Impossible Astronaut

I imagine Moffat intended for Day of the Moon to be when she got replaced but then remembered Kovarian showing up before she was taken and had to go with before.

What was the line where the Doctor called the Dalek a refugee?

I just watched an eddie murphy standup show and first 15 mins are extremely offensively homophobic but the rest is ok I guess and i'm not sure how to feel

And I thought the paradigm daleks had a fat arse.

watch his other one (Delerious or Raw depending on which one you already watched), they're both the two best stand up shows ever. Both of them start with that weird "faggots" bit (I think the first track on the album for Raw is literally called "Faggots Part 2") but once you get past that it's great.

> One of the topics that Murphy addresses in Delirious is homosexuality, frequently making fun of gay men and using the homophobic slur "faggot".[12] However, in 1996, he released a one-page statement apologizing for his use of that slur, saying: "I deeply regret any pain all this has caused."[13]

I think we need an answer mate. Why was such a hostile reaction called for when the anon didn't even outright condemn the show? Do you have some sort of problem with anyone even noticing homophobia?

>The consolidated viewing figure for my episode was eight million people in the UK. That, like the vastness of the universe, is a fucking terrifying thing to consider when lying in your bed late at night. However, that’s not eight million opinions, that’s probably about four or five generalised responses. Knowing “Ok so broadly people love it because of X though some folks really hate Y” made it easier for me to just get on with my life.

He's worked for Big Finish and BBC Worldwide, but I don't see anything from chibnall in his imdb. It's theoretically possible he heard some second hand story from someone at the BBC

also Torchwood Series 2 was 2008. RTD would've at least hinted at it in The Writer's Tale if something was wrong behind the scenes. AFAIK every mention of Chib in that book is fairly positive (not Moffat-level praise but still)

Yeah, but Hungry Earth/Cold Blood went into production in 2009

When it was announced that there was going to be no Dr Who Xmas Special from Chibknob and Shittaker this year, I thought I might as well try and plug the gap. With only four specials left to fan edit I thought I might as well tackle them next before going back to my original plan of tackling the two-parters first. And so here is the first of the four, which I did in chronological order, The Opera Singer And The Shark.

Before we get into the edit itself, a blatant timey-wimey Dickens rip-off, the first thing to say is that just because a special episode goes out at Christmas, that doesn’t automatically mean it has to be set at Christmas. Second thing to say is that Katherine Jenkins is a phwoar-tastic bit of very talented Taffy Crumpet who should be on any straight bloke’s To Do Wish List. [Objectification Alert! Heterosexual Male Gaze detected! Male finding attractive female sexually desireable! Exterminate him!] And I say that on purpose in that hope that it will cause any SJW NPCs reading it to spontaneously combust with offence.

how did we survive /tv/ for so long

Actually, that post is based

New entry in the bestiary of plebs: the Mechanics Pleb is one who fetishes the ostentatious setup half of a Moffat two-parter but can't handle the actual thematic content in the second half

Tell me you retards are baiting.

>genesis of the cybermen, disfigured humans being kept in pain and their voices are turned ofd if they try to complain

>oh look they fly and stomp now hahah

So now that Doctor Who is over for over an year, I did a ranking of all NewWho episodes. I grouped specials with series (because I feel like it) and used preference revealer (https://czeckd.github.io/preference-revealer/). I tried to be as honest and as cold-blooded as possible. Obviously I didn't rewatch most of these in months or maybe even years, but I decided to do it just straight away.

Top 10:

Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways

Heaven Sent

The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang

Last Christmas

A Christmas Carol

Smith and Jones

The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances

Love and Monsters

The Day of the Doctor

The End of Time

Bottom 10:

In the Forest of the Night

Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS

The Tsuranga Conundrum

The Doctor’s Daughter

The Crimson Horror

The Curse of the Black Spot

Nightmare in Silver

A Town Called Mercy

The Idiot’s Lantern

Fear Her

The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos

I calculated an average standing position for every series too, results are as following:

S1 (avg 33,7)

S5 (avg 37,7)

S3 (avg 51,4)

S4 (avg 56,2)

S8 (avg 57,9)

S9 (avg 65)

S6 (avg 73,8)

S10 (avg 79,6)

S11 (avg 85,5)

S7 (avg 96,2)

I guess Demons and certain other episode carried S11 massively for me. It doesn't feel quite right but judging by preference revealer I found it better on average.

>a blatant timey-wimey Dickens rip-off

>Taffy Crumpet

Is Whoflix a boomer?

I've been meaning to do something like this for a while, how does that preference thing work? you copy+paste a list of every nuWho episode into it or do you just do two match ups at a time? is there a pastebin or something with a list of all the episodes i can copy and paste easily? i can't be bothered typing them out or trying to reformat copy/pasting from wikipedia

Must be. Who else would use words like "phwoar"

Don't forget to add Resolution

AH thank you this is perfect

oh right, I almost forgot myself

Oh and there are some dodgy multi-pater grouping choices, like Utopia is separate from Sound of Drums and Last of the Time Lords, check if you want to change that

Easy, Resolution

It’s really not as bad as you’re trying to meme

(i chose the idiot's lantern because it probably at least has better music)

What's wrong with them?

chose the RTD-era eps for both of these

Help, I'm trapped!

Ended up picking that.

Tsuranga isn’t even a bad episode

In the next year you’ll come to realise that chibnall who isn’t exceptionally bad, but functionally mediocre

Fear Her is a good episode and the best episode of Series 2, since it's the only one where 10/Rose are enjoyable.

It was just ruined by the child actor.

I disagree

Prove me wrong. It ignores the shitty romance, and it's the only episode where Rose contributes/helps solve the plot of the week.

Meant to reply to>>185217

Rose also contributes in Satan Pit (breaks the glass and realises that Toby is Devil)

Their characterisation is fine in impossible/satan and that episode is legitimately good to boot

not very promising looking special features. "Best of Social"? and no deleted scenes whatsoever

although I supppose Chibnall commentary tracks have meme potential unless he takes "visual big finish" to another level and just narrates whatever is happening on screen the entire time

>becoming the doctor

>regenerating Doctor Who

These might be interesting just to quite mine

Assuming they aren’t videos that have already been put on YouTube

Chibnall commentaries would actually be very interesting, just to hear from his own mouth what he thinks of what he made and how he thinks about the show in general

They literally believe people that aren't like them don't deserve respect or dignity. They believe that, say, beautiful women or transgender people or homosexuals or non-white people are, on some level, choosing to be different from "normal".

It's the same in how they complain about "forced" diversity.

They're musically illiterate. In America, years of budget cuts have all but eliminated music education from all public schools, as well as most formal arts education. I wouldn't know for sure but I suspect the same is true of the UK.

Is Utopia/Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords a three parter?

Is Turn Left/The Stolen Earth/The Journey's End a three parter?

Is A Good Man Goes To War/Let's Kill Hitler a two parter?

>just narrates whatever is happening on screen the entire time

I despise this in 90% of cases, and I'm positive he's going to do this.

The only example of this that actually works is the Paul Verhoeven/Arnold Schwarzenegger commentary for Total Recall, mostly for how revealing it is about both men and their approach to film-making in general and Total Recall in particular.

it's at the point where they just sound like they have fucking worms in their brains

I genuinely think prolonged exposure to shit like /pol/ rots your mind after a while and you become a paranoid schizo ranting about "minorities on my telly? poltical correctness gone mad" and how "actually being a bootlicker for the elites who make up western governments makes me superior to everyone else"

First one is absolutely bait, mostly in how blatant and stupid it is, but also because Doctor Who isn't on Netflix.

yeah something tells me Chibnall wouldn't sound as endearing as Arnold Schwartzenegger's commentary tracks

I was unreasonably excited when I thought they'd hired a new actor to voice the Daleks, until it got in its shell and I realised it was Briggs all along.

I so wish it had kept that low growl when it got in the casing. There's lots of low voiced Daleks, Chibnall/Briggs, come on.

One of my favorite Dalek voices is the saucer at the end of Time of the Doctor.

It was amazing. All of the pre-casing dalek scenes were easily the best scenes in the episode. They were finally doing something new.

I was also very excited to see the junkyard dalek design, but it was far too neat and symmetrical to be interesting. After that the dalek was back to being boring.

yes to all 3

First one would be in reference to S10

It wasn't on netflix then either.

it's on Netflix in some countries

All 10 seasons are on my netflix, babey!!

what country, out of curiosity? I know in the US at least it's on Prime Instant Video which I prefer to Netflix cuz the quality is better and I can take screenshots

Say please

I agree.

I might 'get' this for the commentaries alone.

Prolonged exposure to any sort of community, especially a very ingroupy closeminded one, will affect not just what but also how you think depending on how much time you spend there for sure. Feel free to make the obvious gag.

I have something in the works for later this year that will vindicate me.

is there anyone who wanted to be on the podcast that never got on

Yes, Judy, and for good reason.

Remember when someone said that New Years Day was the day that everything was closed and everyone was hungover, and then the TARDIS team said the exact same thing later in the episode? And the punchline to that scene was Ryan calling the dalek a "monster" for shutting wi-fi down on New Years, and then the NEXT scene was the exact same joke but painfully drawn out and with totally irrelevant characters?

Does Chibnall have fucking dementia?

have you seen Oquaman yet

how do you pronounce

What word

No don't you see, it was setup.

Chibnall establishes early on that it's New Years Day, the day where everything is closed and everyone is hungover so later on when we hear that it's New Years Day and everything is closed and everyone is hungover we know it to be true.

These two moments are important because they provide the necessary foundation for the climax of the joke, without it we wouldn't understand why turning off the wi-fi is such a big deal. It's New Years day where everything is closed and everyone is hungover so everyone must be at home, probably on a device with an internet connection since it's 2019. Not having any connection to the internet would be disastrous. Then Chibnall has the Ryan moment AND the scene with the family to really drive home the punchline.

Chibnall really is a meticulous and talented writer. You'd never see that sort of setup and payoff for such a socially important yet narratively trivial joke in a moffet episode

Twinkanon (formerly fun2building)

all those papers are personal pleas from innocent civilians, asking the doctor to stop directly enabling their deaths

But I’m fairly sure, going by memory, twinkanon was a shy bisexual rather than openly gay
