**I keep coming back to when, on the second go around, Colin answers Stefan with - "what ending did you get" / "all of them" - to kind of not really think of any ending as a sole ending, but the entire experience as the kind of collated whole. Brooker was eminently aware that even normies would replay for different endings, it's built into the mechanism of how it sends you back to get a few more endings in your first runthrough even. Right?

I see people put 'you always lack control' as a theme of the story and idk, I know Stefan saying 'I was giving too much choice and had to railroad more, giving the illusion of choice, to make the story' is critical, but I feel like that's not quite it

I feel like there's some greater point, maybe about interplay between past and present, I haven't nailed it down yet

I do think perhaps the most effective thing the story does is immerse you in Stefan's sort of obessive drug-addled looping mindset, and gets you in that sense of hyperobsessively doing the same thing/making choices/loops isnt really control; choice means little if it's muted by you circling back again and again either through stefan's personality patterns or the experience of the book/game replaying endings/choices. And there's something to Stefan making the wrong choice as a child and how as an adult his whole life basically kept looping/breaking around that error. Idk I'm still processing how I think/feel about it all.**

Let's Kill Hitler makes a joke out of Hitler and the idea that the show, or at least the title character, would have any sort of meaningful comment or negotiation with the fundamental tension behind the fact the Doctor absolutely could kill Hitler but doesn't. Moffat makes a joke out of that, and completely deflects it. He uses the idea of it as nothing but ratings bait via the title and marketing, then makes the episode about something completely different. The most we get is 11 saying he "really didn't mean to [save Hitler]". It is deflection. I won't speak to the sort of tradition those takes are born out of because while I think they are laden with issues they are also uniquely British so I am undoubtedly missing cultural context. In any case, how does treating tyrant figures as jokes and deflecting from actual ideological/tangible issues regarding them tend to work out for the world?

Meanwhile,

>I've never killed Hitler. And you wouldn't expect me to kill Hitler.

This speaks to ideology. It directly forces the viewer to think of the fact the Doctor absolutely could prevent the Holocaust, yet never does. Then the rest of the episode expands specifically on the sort of mindset that would lead our heroic title character to never saving the millions killed and tortured under Hitler. It makes a point out of that mindset. It is the opposite of deflection; it is engagement. I much prefer wrestling with why the Doctor wouldn't do such things even (well, especially) when it morally degrades our outlook on the character, rather than just making a joke out of it all.

Moffat treats the idea of the Doctor killing Hitler as an outlandish joke, and handwaves it away after getting a ratings boost from people interested by the idea. Harness is fascinated by it and earnestly grapples with its (lack of) ethics.

Don't really get that criticism desu. It's not like the Daleks literally perfectly all shot each other at once. They were launching fuckhuge cosmic nukes at the planet from all sides, and then it suddenly disappears, so all those explosives and missiles meet in the middle and cause a ridiculous explosion that engulfed that entire region of space in hellfire, there's no dodging that.

According to Sandifer, early drafts of Kill the Moon revealed that Courtney grew up to become Blinovitch, who originally had the role given to Lundvik in the final version. Do we know how Blinovitch was meant to factor into the Zygon two-parter? Was she still going to be the same person as Courtney? The idea of Bambera being involved has completely ruptured my brain, I can't process this.

The twelth doctor was the old man doctor, looking back at his life, sad because all he knew was gone and who was now tierd and weary. A reflective final doctor coming to terms with who he was and all that had been before. The twelth doctor was the perfect last doctor. If you wanted to close the show after so many years this was the old man doctor who complelty fitted. When Doctor falls was aired and then finally Twice upon a time it was goodbye to Capaldi, goodbye to Moffatt and really , maybe goodbye to the doctor. Looking at the Doctors overall arc, looking at it thematically and artistically this was the place to sign out on a high. Moffatt did too good a job at saying goodbye- he wrote the final doctor and then passed it on to someone else to introduce a new one. My point is this. I don't think Moffatt did Chibnall any favours at all , I think he handed him a finished story leaving him the only real option but to do the reboot of all reboots and start a fresh. I don't know how I would have written Jodies Doctor after capaldi's. They have tried to revert her back to Tennats and Matts doctors, a more child like and optomistic doctor but for me this doesn't fit, its almost as if they have to ignore what has gone before. What kind of doctor really should have come after 12?

This season's writing has been better than most of Moffat's seasons.

Capaldi's emotional range was angry, grumpy, mopey, smug, and oh wow he is so wacky. That also happened to be Smith's entire range. Jodie managed buoyant, anxious, vulnerable, familiar, and sincere. Emotions we've never seen any of the men do. Watch her face. She wears everything she is feeling on it, almost to a clownish degree.

We finally finished out this season tonight, and as the credits rolled (we have yet to watch the new years special) I asked them how they felt about this season. They were so disinterested (after we have watched together since 2005 and they were little), to the point that they weren't interested in bothering with the special tonight.

I have avoided reviews and comments while we were catching up, but it would seem that they were not alone in their criticisms:

The Doctor and villains spend half the episode explaining the plot

The Doctor spends too much time making references to the past as if to say "I really am the doctor guys, see I know this trivia"

The sonic is now a magic wand (more than before)

Episode order doesn't matter

Episodes are repetitive

Tardis practically nonexistent

No tie in to story at large or doctor's past

It's boring

We were all three excited for this season, but it fell super flat. The Rosa Parks and Demon of the Punjab episodes shined, and the companions are great - but the writing, specifically the dialog is horrific. I had to agree with their thoughts. The Doctor is not convincing in the role, and the new lack of story are and climax makes none of it really matter. I know people didn't like Capaldi or Moffat a whole lot (we liked it), but damn - Chibnall is terrible. The cast is underserved by writing that is just plain bad.

In an effort to reach a broader audience it feels like the show could be completely derailed. I hope they spend this year course correcting, otherwise we will just wait for a regen or watch reruns.

Each episode held potential only to be derailed by ten minutes of explanation and corny, unnecessary developments like stoner frog and tree tendril - leaving a person thinking….did they focus group any of this?

>Actually this raises a good general point about “negativity” towards Doctor Who, which has become a topic of choice in certain circles. There’s a lot I could say here, from a historical observation that organized Doctor Who fandom largely arose during periods where the show could be described as “deeply flawed” and that negativity has accordingly always had a place in it to just making another joke about Chibnall’s Open Air appearance. But in the face of this episode, with its reduction of the series to a formulaic reassertion of its constituent elements—to a franchise as opposed to a piece of narrative—this sort of thinking becomes aggressively dangerous. It transforms media fandom into a sort of special case of sports fandom (or indeed nationalism), where one backs the series not because it is creating compelling or culturally vital television but because it’s become a tribal allegiance to be defended for its own sake, as an end in itself. This is… not a healthy relationship with art.

I wasn't expecting there to be an episode like this so early in the shows run. A bottle episode, set entirely in the tardis no less, the idea of the tardis as sentient, tension between the Doctor and the companions, which to be fair had been present from the beginning but not like this, the part where The Doctor was threatening to throw Ian and Barbara out without even knowing what was outside was brilliant. I also loved Susan with the scissors, I don't know why.

While watching it I thought some creature had gotten in and was possessing them, hopping from one body to another and turning them all against each other but I was equally pleased to discover what was actually happening, even if it made zero sense at all.

I guess I just wasn't expecting so much of the show to be realised so early on if that makes sense. The tardis being sentient, trying to warn everyone of the imminent danger, one of the companions solving the problem on their own, the sweet scene at the end where (even though The Doctor doesn't actually apologise for anything) the tardis team really feels like a team. Not to mention The Doctors Gilbert and Sullivan reference. I definitely wasn't expecting a historical name drop this early on.

I think it was a case of me underestimating the beginnings of Classic Who, I've actually ended up thorougly enjoying this first season so far

 No.185869

I do wonder if Moffat had embraced Classic Who as much as he did from Name of the Doctor-onwards a year or two earlier what the 50th Anniversary would've been like. Would he have pushed harder to have the BBC let him use McGann instead of coming up with War? would he have brought back Davison/Colin/McCoy as well for the "All Thirteen!" scene in a Time Crash "wibbly-wobbly agey-wagey" way?

Then again I think the 50th going the way it did was just a perfect storm of everything lining up the right way with Eccleston turning it down and Matt deciding to leave at short notice and Moff being able to adapt when he wasn't able to go in the direct he wanted to

I've been thinking about this recently. Why does the BBC exclusively pick writers to be Showrunners? It's primarily a producer position. I find it hard to imagine why Julie Gardner, for example, couldn't fill the role.

Maybe after Chibnall they'll give up on the idea that the Showrunner has to be a writer too, they were spoilt with RTD and Moffat.

because showrunner=head writer

but I think to answer your question, you might be thinking of the executive producer, which is what Julie was. But RTD was also the executive producer as well as head writer/showrunner. Same with Moffat and Chibnall. For some reason Moffat went through executive producers like RTD went through companions, I think his co-EP's changed every series at least, with the exception of Brian Minchin ofc. Piers Wenger and Nikki Wilson are still around and involved with the show, and Marcus Wilson was also around for a while but I don't think he was an executive producer.

I don't know. A lot of titles and positions in film/television production are the way they are because that's just the way they are. There aren't laws or literal rules that make them how they are. They can be ignored or broken, it's just once things are widely accepted or used there's no real reason to change it.

Theoretically I don't see why you couldn't be showrunner without being a writer. Moffat only wrote 2 episodes for Series 7B, the same amount as Mark Gatiss and Neil Cross. Same with Series 7A, him and Chib both wrote 2 episodes.

But you run the risk of a lack of cohesiveness in regards to story arcs and character development without that "auteur" in charge of the show. A lack of vision, if you will. But who knows. It works for Star Wars with Kathleen Kennedy (despite what angry fanboys believe) but she's incredibly experienced and incredibly successful as a producer and also has the advantage of an already rich established storyline that only 3 films have had to expand upon while the other 2 have just been filling in the blanks. Kevin Feige is also successful.

I'm always going to read that as "hoe-ds" so you should stick to the far more aesthetic /who/man

 No.185979

it'd be one thing if it was meant to be a shocking reveal in the episode like in Bad Wolf or Army of Ghosts. But you're given enough informaton to figure it out in the first few minutes and if you still haven't figured it out Thirteen namedrops the Daleks by the 10 minute mark at the latest.

Also if they didn't half-ass it by hiding the Dalek in the promos until getting cold feet on Christmas and adding that stupid "exterminate!" at the end of the same trailer released weeks earlier

 No.185993

>>185992

Yeah this.

 No.185994

>>185986

It's not about rhymes, it's about the inconsistencies in english pronunciation.

"whodes", ignoring the context of "who", would be pronounced in a way that rhymes with "chodes"

/who/man, while still involving a slight stretch, is meant to sound like "human"
