I missed that before.

You know, it's funny, his original script ended with KStew and Osgood on trial for treason, and then just this last episode we find out UNIT is no more.

Moffat libbed Harness' scripts up. And he'll pay. Oh he'll pay.

The original song is so bizarre because it seems to be entirely dedicated to shaming Mia Khalifa for doing porn.

Did you guys read any academic books on Doctor Who? If so, what did you think? I know most of them are probably dated (like John Fiske’s ”Popularity and Ideology: A Structuralist Reading of Dr Who” certainly is for example), but i'm still interested.

Unironically yes

I'd rewatch S11 with /who/cares commentaries

i have dr sandifer's books

no, we love stories

Not bowlestrek?

are any of the black archive writers phds?

what voice do you read judy's posts in?

If I wanted to read pretentious analysis of DW I'd ask Mirrors to parody me.

Tommy wiseau

I already parodied sandifer on the wiki, don't tempt me.

Can't think of anyone rn but i'm not that familiar with black archive's authors

did Sandifer ever acknowlodged us?

I read a few journal articles for an essay, mostly focused on gender. They weren't that good, Doctor Who seems to be a bit of a blind spot of academia's.

Does Sandifer even have anything peer-reviewed published? It's so weird that she got a PhD but doesn't work in academia.

She's aware of /who/.

She called the wiki article ‘accurate despite being transphobic’ or something like that

She had a bit about liking the title collage but not liking the wiki page it was available on.

Sandifer would be the Steve Shives of WHO

but he prefer to write instead of making it youtube videos

sorry, she

Don't forget when people tried to explain nilso to sandifer

What are your thoughts on Black Archive making Obverse a substantially larger profit than the original Faction Paradox or Iris Wildthyme novels?

Which was ironic because the image deadnamed her while the article had been consciously edited after she transitioned

The image was made in celebration of the then-finale of the Eruditorum, the Forest of the Dead review. I'd fix it on the wiki, but I don't have access to the fixed image right now, it's on a hard drive I can't use at the moment. I posted it here before but have no idea where or how to get to it without searching dozens of threads by hand.

to clean it

He's an academic? Yikes!

Didn't he get big because of recordings of his university lectures?

even i have published stuff in journals, it is not the legitimiser prog thinks

I also made a version that deadnames her all the way up to the Capaldi era, which is a problem on the one hand because of the rampant deadnaming but on the other hand I suspect it fits her sense of aesthetics better.

I'll stick with this version, though.

about what?

Fuck you, how? I'm an undergrad and I've asked about getting published in journals and the answer I got was that basically I need a whole bunch of letters after my name first.

Would it be worth asking her?

I understand they don't like the dead name

The plebs who were constantly shouting for Moffat to leave

I made software to assist with some academic research thing for some people in europe and I think they said my name was meant to go in their paper, but that was a year ago and I haven't heard anything from them

Send them an email

academics are rats who will shaft you at the first opportunity

There's no reliable way to ask without doxing myself and also risking serious insult, so it's best to leave it. I mean, she republished all her books with her new name, so…

… she also republished her most recent book with her new name literally taped over her old name.

nothing interesting, don't worry, just tangley industry stuff

i did a postgrad project for a year specifically to get something written that'd be worthwhile publishing

It was only like a day's worth of work modifying a project I had already made (they discovered it and asked if they could use it) so it's not really a big deal

you should had responded that the published article was about love

You mean Honours? That's my plan too, although my understanding was that most theses don't get published. At least, not without serious reworking/cutting.

Honours don't get automatically published or anything by any means. After I finished I reworked parts of it and worked to submit it to a journal and that went successfully.

File: 63f1ff2c0a53593⋯.mp4 (699.25 KB, 428x240, 107:60, dalek.mp4)

>she republished all her books with her new name, so…

I was just thinking that too

Maybe that was a move to make those past works still relevant to the present rather than explicitly rewriting the past, because like you suggested she doesn't seem upset by acknowledging her past self in writing sometimes. But I do think it'd be safer to stick with her current name.

What's your field?

/who/ consensus on Bandersnatch?

Resolution - AI 80

haven't done it yet, no spoilsies

Falseflag but I agreed with its sentiment.

Do you think they're going to do a soundtrack release for resolution on its own?

RTD's most based moment was ruthlessly shitting on the 50th

>It wasn't so much the Time Lords disappearing, it was all the Daleks shooting themselves [laughter]. I was like 'they couldn't- any of them dodge that?' [laughter] No Dalek just goes 'Woops! Out the way!'?"

what are you waiting for

it is the most revolutionizing TV since

No, it has two tracks allocated on the S11 one, which isn't out until the 11th

>Jackie Tyler laughing and pushing a Dalek around.gif

Might as well play Tex Murphy

I'm a busy boy and can't easily dedicate that much time to entertainment

Fun but its lack of skip feature actively discourages you from replaying it a lot to get all the routes, which might be a good or bad thing. David Slade is a master of kino though.

>it was all the Daleks shooting themselves [laughter]. I was like 'they couldn't- any of them dodge that?

sniperbot tier

Slade is fucking based, and directed the best episode of BM too.

some of them did dodge it, that was the point, that's how there are still daleks post time war

>Big Finish Games

why DID the time lords and daleks start fighting?

Well-made well-acted generally good I just wish the meta message about choose your own adventure stuff was more cohesive

The S1-S5 Daleks all have individual explanations for being around that don't require the 50th, and the Daleks won and went off to breed after S5 anyway so it's moot after then.

Genesis. The Time Lords started it.

the wall

>tfw no Big Finish interactive movies

The Time Lords foresaw a day when the Daleks would be the only surviving race in the cosmos. Presumably, this is a prophecy of the post-Reality Bomb universe.

I have netflix now

am I a traitor?

doctor who game by kotaru uchikoshi and moffat

All of them were flung out of the fire at the end of the time war and fell through the time vortex screaming in madness. That's pretty much all of them except maybe the ones from Victory of the Daleks, which I've always interpreted as being survivors of Journey's End.

Doctor Who - A Peter Harness Event

>not Brooker

Wrong path mate.

>forces me into to chose the right path :(

just imagine moffat in charge of a branching narrative game

Do you think the existence of Kill The Moon and its absurdly hostile fan reception could be a legitimate obstacle to Harness being offered the showrunner position?

Annabel Jones for DW showrunner

-coshowrunner of Black Mirror

-Brooker can keep BM running on his own while half the kinocreator can come make DW

does bandersnatch expect you to have watched black mirror before, or is it a completely standalone anthology story?

>-Brooker can keep BM running on his own

Hahahahahaha no he can't

No, the Internet is very loud but very small, and the Zygon episodes were received VERY well, and the reception to WOTW will matter infinitely more than any DW he's written, just as Chib's shit DW didn't matter when it came to him being offered the gig, thanks to Broadchurch.

Completely standalone, there are easter eggs if you're a fan but they're insignificant.

completely standalone anthology story

There are cutesy references but they are immaterial - it is completely standalone.

Then they can both come run DW. Actually two close coshowrunners for DW would be a really good thing.

Is she a writer at all? She seems to be a Julie Gardner equivalent.

>Chib's shit DW didn't matter when it came to him being offered the gig, thanks to Broadchurch.

Nothing chib wrote verged people as much as KTM though

I thought it was funny how people were joking about Graham being more of a main character than 13 then he goes and gets his own epic summoning the tardis hero moment in Resolution

Epic for literally no reason by the way, they just quickly popped back because they accidentally left without him. But it's all low dutch angles, wind machines, and 13s theme at its most triumphant

Then it's just "Come on Graham, Ryans dad can come too"

I watched San Junipero

it is basically Silence in the Library

but better

dont @ me

>Charlie and Annabel, the new Russell and Julie

I can dig it

>Nothing chib wrote verged people as much as KTM though

Moffat completely erased those memories from the BBC when people called into to complain about "Don't cremate me"

The KTM verging is much smaller than it appears. It is online. It is fans.

No but DW has had brilliant showrunner equivalents before that never wrote a single episode. Stick a few consistent writers below her for her to deploy as she saw fit and the kino would flow.

Yeah, and Dark Water, and Twice Upon A Time….

Did you notice they played that awful piece of music from the end of The Ghost Monument again in this episode?

Charlie + Annabel

-two people, so much less overworked showrunner

-already have years and years of experience doing a show that is "new concept/setting/story every episode", unlike Cross/Harness/etc.

My favorite show is back

I am Jazz

yfw USS Callister style episode

but is about dr who

Well from Black Mirror book I totally got Russell + Julie impression. She encourages him to write stuff and is very passionate about making perfect condition for him and for the show and sometimes cuts off his dumb ideas.

Don't have a problem with the gender, as long as they refer to the doctor with a gender, and as long as they don't make it as a "trans is okay" message. And I have a huge problem with the new series, i hate the 2005 reboot and prefer the classics a lot

s11 has me like TT

I would assume so, more episodes would allow for a bigger range of quality

I watched s1 and 2 together, one every night, over a week and by the end of it I was pretty drained. I thought it was incredible but I was satisfied.

So when s3 was announced I had no doubts it was going to be good but I also had no interest in watching it. I'll probably get around to it eventually but all I really want to do is rewatch Doctor Who forever

only ep direct meaning to our actual world

other eps abstract sf concept

sometimes they reflect stuff in real world but never tangible

the metalhead is not 'what if evil bee, what if trapped in phone, what if video game really scary'

it is what if police and military blend. what do they protect. line of private property and human life.

it is amazon warehouse. it is class betrayal. it is autocannbailisation of capitalism. instituions protecting decay of decayng world.

it sounds familiar because it is actually things we can see, is not abstract. it is hellworld. horror via technology instead of horror of technology. extrapolated from actual world, instead of 'scary sci fi idea based on something a phone could do one day, maybe'.

Was the narrator actually, genuinely, just chibnall trying to make the episode more "epic" feeling?

It was a request he should never have granted

**I keep coming back to when, on the second go around, Colin answers Stefan with - "what ending did you get" / "all of them" - to kind of not really think of any ending as a sole ending, but the entire experience as the kind of collated whole. Brooker was eminently aware that even normies would replay for different endings, it's built into the mechanism of how it sends you back to get a few more endings in your first runthrough even. Right?

I see people put 'you always lack control' as a theme of the story and idk, I know Stefan saying 'I was giving too much choice and had to railroad more, giving the illusion of choice, to make the story' is critical, but I feel like that's not quite it

I feel like there's some greater point, maybe about interplay between past and present, I haven't nailed it down yet

I do think perhaps the most effective thing the story does is immerse you in Stefan's sort of obessive drug-addled looping mindset, and gets you in that sense of hyperobsessively doing the same thing/making choices/loops isnt really control; choice means little if it's muted by you circling back again and again either through stefan's personality patterns or the experience of the book/game replaying endings/choices. And there's something to Stefan making the wrong choice as a child and how as an adult his whole life basically kept looping/breaking around that error. Idk I'm still processing how I think/feel about it all.**

More cinematic. It did feel like a Doctor Who Movie Event until last 20 minutes, imo

I actually like chibnall's "movie event" tone of woman and resolution, it would have been better without the narration

I feel fucking dumb, what's the drag? He says he wouldn't kill Hitler and that's consistent with what was shown.

I would rather the more Hitler-aligned posters speak for me here as I don't want to override their voices with my relative privilege in this situation.

100% agree about this, this was executed in the best way possible

I think I wasnt the best target audience for this in a sense I didn't want to grind endings since the start, I watched it as a telltale game (play it once and enjoy the illusion) and bandersnatch actively requires you to rewatch and rewatch it again so you get the meaning of the meta behind it

Nilso should make a chart

Let's Kill Hitler makes a joke out of Hitler and the idea that the show, or at least the title character, would have any sort of meaningful comment or negotiation with the fundamental tension behind the fact the Doctor absolutely could kill Hitler but doesn't. Moffat makes a joke out of that, and completely deflects it. He uses the idea of it as nothing but ratings bait via the title and marketing, then makes the episode about something completely different. The most we get is 11 saying he "really didn't mean to [save Hitler]". It is deflection. I won't speak to the sort of tradition those takes are born out of because while I think they are laden with issues they are also uniquely British so I am undoubtedly missing cultural context. In any case, how does treating tyrant figures as jokes and deflecting from actual ideological/tangible issues regarding them tend to work out for the world?

>I've never killed Hitler. And you wouldn't expect me to kill Hitler.

This speaks to ideology. It directly forces the viewer to think of the fact the Doctor absolutely could prevent the Holocaust, yet never does. Then the rest of the episode expands specifically on the sort of mindset that would lead our heroic title character to never saving the millions killed and tortured under Hitler. It makes a point out of that mindset. It is the opposite of deflection; it is engagement. I much prefer wrestling with why the Doctor wouldn't do such things even (well, especially) when it morally degrades our outlook on the character, rather than just making a joke out of it all.

Moffat treats the idea of the Doctor killing Hitler as an outlandish joke, and handwaves it away after getting a ratings boost from people interested by the idea. Harness is fascinated by it and earnestly grapples with its (lack of) ethics.

Right, that's something I recognise in the episode but my confusion comes out of labelling it as a drag

I pieced together that gig was the one who put the project together in the first place since he did the original narration voiceover before it changed to Neo

Also the obvious Kode=Nirvi

Only one of your sentences is correct.

Bodes pretty fucking well for his War of the Worlds.

Harness correctly recognises that Moffat is tacitly Hitler-sympathetic by way of not taking him seriously.

are we doing Hitler again? why

That's basically what the stream was whenever a new episode aired, it was pure kino and the only thing that made them bearable most of the time.

Don't really get that criticism desu. It's not like the Daleks literally perfectly all shot each other at once. They were launching fuckhuge cosmic nukes at the planet from all sides, and then it suddenly disappears, so all those explosives and missiles meet in the middle and cause a ridiculous explosion that engulfed that entire region of space in hellfire, there's no dodging that.

According to Sandifer, early drafts of Kill the Moon revealed that Courtney grew up to become Blinovitch, who originally had the role given to Lundvik in the final version. The twelth doctor was the old man doctor, looking back at his life, sad because all he knew was gone and who was now tierd and weary. A reflective final doctor coming to terms with who he was and all that had been before. The twelth doctor was the perfect last doctor. If you wanted to close the show after so many years this was the old man doctor who complelty fitted. When Doctor falls was aired and then finally Twice upon a time it was goodbye to Capaldi, goodbye to Moffatt and really , maybe goodbye to the doctor. Looking at the Doctors overall arc, looking at it thematically and artistically this was the place to sign out on a high. Moffatt did too good a job at saying goodbye- he wrote the final doctor and then passed it on to someone else to introduce a new one. My point is this. I don't think Moffatt did Chibnall any favours at all , I think he handed him a finished story leaving him the only real option but to do the reboot of all reboots and start a fresh. I don't know how I would have written Jodies Doctor after capaldi's. They have tried to revert her back to Tennats and Matts doctors, a more child like and optomistic doctor but for me this doesn't fit, its almost as if they have to ignore what has gone before. What kind of doctor really should have come after 12?

This season's writing has been better than most of Moffat's seasons.

Capaldi's emotional range was angry, grumpy, mopey, smug, and oh wow he is so wacky. That also happened to be Smith's entire range. Jodie managed buoyant, anxious, vulnerable, familiar, and sincere. Emotions we've never seen any of the men do. Watch her face. She wears everything she is feeling on it, almost to a clownish degree.

Bigger role in DW when? She's brilliant

We finally finished out this season tonight, and as the credits rolled (we have yet to watch the new years special) I asked them how they felt about this season. They were so disinterested (after we have watched together since 2005 and they were little), to the point that they weren't interested in bothering with the special tonight.

I have avoided reviews and comments while we were catching up, but it would seem that they were not alone in their criticisms:

The Doctor and villains spend half the episode explaining the plot

The Doctor spends too much time making references to the past as if to say "I really am the doctor guys, see I know this trivia"

The sonic is now a magic wand (more than before)

Episode order doesn't matter

Episodes are repetitive

Tardis practically nonexistent

No tie in to story at large or doctor's past

It's boring

We were all three excited for this season, but it fell super flat. The Rosa Parks and Demon of the Punjab episodes shined, and the companions are great - but the writing, specifically the dialog is horrific. I had to agree with their thoughts. The Doctor is not convincing in the role, and the new lack of story are and climax makes none of it really matter. I know people didn't like Capaldi or Moffat a whole lot (we liked it), but damn - Chibnall is terrible. The cast is underserved by writing that is just plain bad.

In an effort to reach a broader audience it feels like the show could be completely derailed. I hope they spend this year course correcting, otherwise we will just wait for a regen or watch reruns.

Each episode held potential only to be derailed by ten minutes of explanation and corny, unnecessary developments like stoner frog and tree tendril - leaving a person thinking….did they focus group any of this?

>He seemed like a nice guy who didn’t deserve to die who happened to be gay. It’s upsetting yeah. That’s the point. You feel bad he died. Not just bad people die.

>Maybe people just got too used to the Doctor saving basically everyone at the last second in past seasons. This season had a high innocent body count which I honestly like (that sounds odd I’m not sadistic I promise). That’s how the show used to be. The Doctor can only do so much sometimes and bad shit happens. I like the show having stakes and consequences sometimes.

>Actually this raises a good general point about “negativity” towards Doctor Who, which has become a topic of choice in certain circles. There’s a lot I could say here, from a historical observation that organized Doctor Who fandom largely arose during periods where the show could be described as “deeply flawed” and that negativity has accordingly always had a place in it to just making another joke about Chibnall’s Open Air appearance. But in the face of this episode, with its reduction of the series to a formulaic reassertion of its constituent elements—to a franchise as opposed to a piece of narrative—this sort of thinking becomes aggressively dangerous. It transforms media fandom into a sort of special case of sports fandom (or indeed nationalism), where one backs the series not because it is creating compelling or culturally vital television but because it’s become a tribal allegiance to be defended for its own sake, as an end in itself. This is… not a healthy relationship with art.

I wasn't expecting there to be an episode like this so early in the shows run. A bottle episode, set entirely in the tardis no less, the idea of the tardis as sentient, tension between the Doctor and the companions, which to be fair had been present from the beginning but not like this, the part where The Doctor was threatening to throw Ian and Barbara out without even knowing what was outside was brilliant. I also loved Susan with the scissors, I don't know why.

While watching it I thought some creature had gotten in and was possessing them, hopping from one body to another and turning them all against each other but I was equally pleased to discover what was actually happening, even if it made zero sense at all.

I guess I just wasn't expecting so much of the show to be realised so early on if that makes sense. The tardis being sentient, trying to warn everyone of the imminent danger, one of the companions solving the problem on their own, the sweet scene at the end where (even though The Doctor doesn't actually apologise for anything) the tardis team really feels like a team. Not to mention The Doctors Gilbert and Sullivan reference. I definitely wasn't expecting a historical name drop this early on.

I think it was a case of me underestimating the beginnings of Classic Who, I've actually ended up thorougly enjoying this first season so far

>Arcadia in Name of the Doctor

>Arcadia in Day of the Doctor/Hell Bent

>middle of the desert

Arcadia is the location being ravaged by Daleks in the Time War painting, it's a great distance from the Doctor's barn and I don't think we see it in Name at all.

I do wonder if Moffat had embraced Classic Who as much as he did from Name of the Doctor-onwards a year or two earlier what the 50th Anniversary would've been like. Would he have pushed harder to have the BBC let him use McGann instead of coming up with War? would he have brought back Davison/Colin/McCoy as well for the "All Thirteen!" scene in a Time Crash "wibbly-wobbly agey-wagey" way?

Then again I think the 50th going the way it did was just a perfect storm of everything lining up the right way with Eccleston turning it down and Matt deciding to leave at short notice and Moff being able to adapt when he wasn't able to go in the direct he wanted to

He wouldn't even need to bring back Tom/Davison/Colin/McCoy in the flesh, all he should have done was get them to do some original lines instead of using soundbites

Chibnall's entire joke about new years is "what would people do without phone signal or wifi? they'd have to interact with their family!"

the answer is "there's a lot that can still be done on your own without phone signal or wifi".

Again, it's a show; relax and don't think about it too hard, unless you also want to figure out how exactly the Dalek created a working casing entirely out of scrap metal that somehow still retains the properties of Dalekanium, along with internal mechanics like rocket boosters, ordnance, and a working interface.

>Is she a writer at all? She seems to be a Julie Gardner equivalent.

I've been thinking about this recently. Why does the BBC exclusively pick writers to be Showrunners? It's primarily a producer position. I find it hard to imagine why Julie Gardner, for example, couldn't fill the role.

Maybe after Chibnall they'll give up on the idea that the Showrunner has to be a writer too, they were spoilt with RTD and Moffat.

>Why does the BBC exclusively pick writers to be Showrunners?

because showrunner=head writer

but I think to answer your question, you might be thinking of the executive producer, which is what Julie was. But RTD was also the executive producer as well as head writer/showrunner. Same with Moffat and Chibnall. For some reason Moffat went through executive producers like RTD went through companions, I think his co-EP's changed every series at least, with the exception of Brian Minchin ofc. Piers Wenger and Nikki Wilson are still around and involved with the show, and Marcus Wilson was also around for a while but I don't think he was an executive producer.

She chonk

I don't get it

It's anti-humor. It's funny because it's not actually funny

I like more intelligence in my anti-humor

Can i ask you a questin

I don't know. A lot of titles and positions in film/television production are the way they are because that's just the way they are. There aren't laws or literal rules that make them how they are. They can be ignored or broken, it's just once things are widely accepted or used there's no real reason to change it.

Theoretically I don't see why you couldn't be showrunner without being a writer. Moffat only wrote 2 episodes for Series 7B, the same amount as Mark Gatiss and Neil Cross. Same with Series 7A, him and Chib both wrote 2 episodes.

But you run the risk of a lack of cohesiveness in regards to story arcs and character development without that "auteur" in charge of the show. A lack of vision, if you will. But who knows. It works for Star Wars with Kathleen Kennedy (despite what angry fanboys believe) but she's incredibly experienced and incredibly successful as a producer and also has the advantage of an already rich established storyline that only 3 films have had to expand upon while the other 2 have just been filling in the blanks. Kevin Feige is also successful.

Hey Neo?

>Theoretically I don't see why you couldn't be showrunner without being a writer

It basically happened all the time in Classic Who, often to great effect. You can still have that direct auteur vision even if they don't write any eps. Look at 7

Surely it's time for everyone to band together and do as I say!

it'd be one thing if it was meant to be a shocking reveal in the episode like in Bad Wolf or Army of Ghosts. But you're given enough informaton to figure it out in the first few minutes and if you still haven't figured it out Thirteen namedrops the Daleks by the 10 minute mark at the latest.

Also if they didn't half-ass it by hiding the Dalek in the promos until getting cold feet on Christmas and adding that stupid "exterminate!" at the end of the same trailer released weeks earlier
