I believe that this series works even better away from people's expectations. It is different than past series so when watching it for the first time, people put too much emphasis on comparing to what Who was like before which is why I think many were disappointed.

This change in style will take time to get used to, and I have a feeling that people will change their mind of this series after a while because a lot of the episodes are what Who has always been, just presented slightly differently.

So please watch this series again and I hope that when you do, you like it as much as I do :)

I don't know, it's actually rather fascinating. The exploration of masculinity and pornography in BC s3 was actually really pointed at times. Does he lack passion? Is he intentionally making it empty? Run out of ideas? Was BC always very significantly bolstered by others, somehow even in the writing? If I cared enough I'd watch Camelot to try and dig further but I really, really don't. His TW is quite apolitical and very muddled sexual politics wise, which clouds things further. Perhaps the clue was in front of us right from the very beginning - just make it really. He thinks DW is the best idea in television and thus maybe that it just holds itself up? He may actually be a case of being a fanboy clouding his vision in ways bad for the show, whereas I think RTD and Moff always span off it in productive ways. But JNT was a thing. Not that Chibnall is that bad, in any sense.

What a total load of rubbish , Jodie Whittaker can’t act , Chris chibnall cant write. To much political correctness in this show. Timelords can’t change gender as Jon pertwee said to one of his assistants. Avoid like the plague , I will stick to classic who where the stories are more believable and so should you.

 No.192563

The show under Chris Chibnall is very poor. The fault isn't the acting (although they could lose one of the Tardis companions and no-one would notice). It's the lack of monsters and the poor scripts. The show looks great but it's so dull. Each episode is a slog to watch. I know every showrunner likes to put their stamp on the show, but Chibnall has sucked all the fun out of the show. Where are the monsters? Where's the excitment? I do hope they make major improvement to season 12 (they could start by getting some decent writers) but as long as Chibnall is in charge I don't see much chance of that.

 No.192564

The actors and actresses range from mildly invested to simply not even trying. The main actress is solely trying to replicate the actions of Matt Smith, however fails in every regard to create a unique or interesting interpretation of the character in question.

The CGI/cinematography varies in quality, which would be acceptable if the episodes had strong writing - however they do not.

Spoilers follow;

The most notable example of this is the episodes 'Arachnids in the UK' where the characters try to pretend that letting spiders starve or suffocate to death is better than a mercy killing. The character we are meant to hate in this episode, who is an allegory for Donald Trump is surprisingly the only one who seems to understand that putting down a suffering creature is better than just letting them go on in agony knowing that they are going to die in a horrible way.

Hopefully the show is cancelled before we arrive at the stage where nobody watches anymore - a cancellation may be the only thing to save the show, enabling for a reboot in a few years time.

 No.192565

So, this is the worst series af all Dr Who history. I hope a new doctor, and new writers. the tardis is no more blue but green- blue.

About the stories, everybody is disappointed.

This is the end, my friends..

What a pity, they kill Dr who and i wont forgive. I hope they will stop after 10 episodes, kill the doctor and gave us a new doctor and other writers and directors.

Also, they introduce politic. It's not good. Half the part of the fan is of course disapointed, with heavy critics of Trump, he is not like episode 4 shows. also green power stories and all this kind of things.. interesting maybe .. but this is not Dr Who.

 No.192567

1. Hire better writers and strive for innovation

Audiences can handle trickier narratives (not necessarily overly complex), and for god’s sake if you’re going to preach avoid literalism and look up the word “allegory”.

2. Vary style of direction

Who can be any genre - encourage more variety in the direction. It could be like the Wire one week, Breaking Bad the next, Game of thrones, a Fellini film, a road movie, the Muppets – unpredictability is preferable to generic.

3. Ensemble cast? Okay but only if all those cogs play their part!

Although Who has generally worked at its best with a strong bond between a single companion and the Doctor a larger cast could work. But if there are three companions they have to be there for a reason, have a function within the narrative and the characters should compliment and bounce off each other (see any Joss Whedon series for examples).

4. Make the most of the gender change

You’ve cast a woman, great, but if all you’re going to give her is a variation on previous Doctors what was the point? Perhaps they should have hired a woman to be showrunner too. Instead of shying away from the gender change, make it count – revel in what an actress can bring to the role.

5. To hell with season arcs, how about one long story

Most popular shows these days are not anthologies, why not try for a longer story? It could be epic!

If all else fails they should bring back people who know how to write the show for JW’s second season – RTD, Moffat, Robert Shearman, Paul Cornell, Rona Munroe (at a pinch I’d even allow Gatiss back) just to get the wheels back on track.

Final comment now the season is over.

Hell, even Season 23 had "Mindwarp". This is the worst Doctor Who has ever been.

What's to blame…

BAD WRITING & BORING DIRECTION.

On behalf of all the fans of sound mind THAT is why we don't like it.

The show has been well and truly "Sunday-nighted" turned into bland wallpaper to end the weekend on.

 No.192568

Having been really looking forward to this season, I've found myself really not jelling with season 11. Gone are the laughs or any real threat, and instead left with something that resembles Eastenders. It's called Doctor Who, there is a blue police box, but that's it. Jodies Doctor is very human and left into the background to really not do much, bad guys are humans, the monsters have gone and the tardis interior has turned into a crystallised B+Q. The theme tune is great though. I'm really disappointed with this season and would say its the weakest in the entire history of Doctor Who, and I've watched most of it.

Unfortunately I can't select zero stars. Series 11 of the TV show masquerading as Doctor Who has been astonishingly, unbelievably awful. Watching it has felt like observing a slow motion car crash.

I have no problem with BBC making a bland, tension-free program about a slightly overenthusiastic, vaguely annoying, totally uncharismatic primary school teacher who travels the universe, with 3 dull, characterless, ’friends’ meeting dull, unimaginative aliens that pose no threat in unimaginative stories laden with padding, dreary exposition, technobabble and laboured, simplistic, laughable lectures in political correctness.

However, I do have a problem with calling that program ‘Doctor Who.’

We stuck with this through the 10 episode run hoping it would get better. It didn't. My family are all WHO lovers, and not one of us liked it.

I guess the final insult is the release of the DVD and Bluray boxsets, charging the same price as for previous seasons, even though it was 2 or 3 episodes shorter than normal. In addition they have the cheek to exclude the New Years Day Special, which I guess they are holding back for a separate release to extract more cash from the fans they still have left.

Dividing the cost of the Bluray set by the number of episodes must make this one of the most expensive TV boxsets ever. Unfortunately it is also one of the worst.

A female Doctor could have been a way of steering the 55-year-old franchise in a new direction. But it isn't long before you realise it's a meaningless gimmick and the Doctor and companions are not really relevant anyway. They're just the guides to show us through a succession of rather badly-researched made-for-schools history shows. With over-simplified or rose-tinted versions of the past. Because we don't want to scare the little mites or give them anything too complicated to think about, naturally. After ten episodes we don't know the new Doctor's character and we don't know her companions. Whittaker has no on-screen presence whatsoever, pulls funny faces and imitates former Doctors without ever bringing anything of her own to the show. This is Dr Who strictly as kids' TV. Not only that, it insults the intelligence of children by assuming they will watch any old rubbish. When the alleged writers are asked to write sci-fi, they draw a complete creative blank. Lifeless episodes free of drama, suspense, tension, coherent storylines or characters with any depth to them at all are filled with some of the blandest aliens in the history of sci-fi and villains so one-dimensional they should be accompanied by cartoon "baddie" music.

I would give it zero stars if I could.

Do you remember that while playful, how David Tennant could turn in a micro-second, into a incredibly hard eyed soulful and serious Doctor? Someone who could portray a tremendous sense of 'universe' shattering gravitas? — someone who you could really believe was an alien and hundreds of years old?

It was an astounding display of truly 'great acting' from someone who, while relatively young, was so obviously and incredibly talented, and he did all that — in an accent that was not even his native one.

Do you remember his piercing eyes at the end of "The Waters of Mars" when he knows he simply cannot save that doomed base? : GRAVITAS.

Now let's look at someone who is dismally untalented:

Jodie Whittaker, who, while competent as a 'light drama' character actress in an Emmerdale kind of way, is simply no where near that level of talent. She actually brings NOTHING to the role, is way out of her depth, and in instead in lost desperation, does a gurning pathetic imitation of what she thinks is the 'playful' side of the Doctor — and then thinks that's acceptable, all that's required and job done.

In truth, she is not even really a 'lead' kind of actress, more a character actress that's trying to be a 'lead actress' and she even went on record as saying that adopting a different accent would be way too difficult for her.

As others have said, she plays the 'Doctor' like Absolutely Fabulous Bubble/Jane Horrocks and you simply can't buy into this drivel even for a moment.

Despite some reservations about Chibnall as showrunner, I was really looking forward to Jodie Whittaker in the role of the Doctor. Unfortunately the writing hasn't allowed her to shine! Poorly paced, dull, overly expositional, with 2D villains and uninspiring, or non-existent, monsters - Chibnall's Doctor Who is mind-numbingly boring. The character of the Doctor suffers the most - shallow, surface level stuff; clichéd Doctorisms, unwitty, waffley dialogue, entirely lacking in depth or emotional range. Dialogue lacks the RTD/Moffat sparkle all round. Characters talk in dreary expositional info-dumbs. Stories feel rough and unfinished. The soundtrack is ambient mood music, lacking range and personality - often it feels totally disconnected from what's happening on screen. There's an amateurish quality to just about every department - some dreadful production decisions - like it's thrown together by a bunch of students! Massively disappointing - I've watched, almost masochistically, out of brand loyalty - and it's been tortuous! Depressingly bad.
