I never realized how fucking at odds Chibs "we need to compete with the Netflix/capeshit programs" comment is with the "watch it any order" thing. Like unless it's some anthology series like Black mirror I can't think of any Netflix shows that have zero continuity from episode to episode. Even comedy shows have multi-episode arcs or plot lines. And big budget capeshit movies are the exact opposite of this nowadays, they're hardly standalone now that we have these huge connected capeshit universes with multiple characters and arc elements dropping in and out of random movies and culminating in the big team-up flicks

I think the only interpretation that makes sense is there was a brief from the BBC to make things less serialized and more episodic but Chibnall wanted to compete with prestige shows and netflix, so just tried to make up for the lack of continuity with (he figured) bigger production values and more leisurely paces.

Kek, funny you should say that. She hadn't seen a single MCU movie over the years, but when infinity war came out she got tired of the fact that literally everyone was talking about it and wanted to see what was so great about it. I told her that people enjoyed it so much since it was a huge team-up movie that was the culmination of like a decade of super hero flicks, so she decided she wanted to see them all to get the full enjoyment. So last summer we sat down every day and watched the entire MCU in order leading up to Infinity War. It was fun watching her getting invested in the characters (Iron Man in particular) and experience some of the funner moments for the first time since she's somehow remained completely unspoiled on everything all this time. After the marathon was over and it was finally the night before we were going to the theaters to see Infinity War she was pacing back and forth and ranting how she was terrified they were gonna kill Iron Man off. She gasped loud as fuck in the theater when Thanos stabbed him, thank God that was a false flag. I told her that she needs to prepare herself for Endgame though since it's pretty likely they'll retire the character since RDJ's contract is up and he's done a shit ton of these.

I keep seeing posts that claim the companions in Series 11 got no character development. So I made a list of some of the bits of characterization we saw, and what episodes they occurred in. There's a lot more than this, but this gives some examples of the types of things Chibnall did to show us who these three companions are, and what makes them tick.

Graham: the outgoing, grieving widower who has a strong sense of family

S11E01: we see that he's outgoing and gregarious because he has a good rapport with the local bus drivers.

S11E01: he takes his familial relationships seriously, treating Ryan as family even though his feelings aren't reciprocated

S11E02: again, he's trying to look after Ryan, while not being overbearing ("I was kind of hoping you'd say you'd look out for me, too.")

S11E03: he's proud to call Ryan his grandson, and delights in throwing their relationship in the face of the racist bus driver

S11E03: his friendly, outgoing manner is starting to be useful to Team TARDIS. He handles the Alabama policeman, smoothing over a bad situation with his charm

S11E04: He goes home to an empty house and realizes he's not ready to cope with everyday life without Grace

S11E08: Again, his friendly demeanor helps soothe King James' worries about their legitimacy as witchfinders

S11E09: He misses Grace very, very much. Only a threat to his other remaining family, Ryan, convinces him that she's not real.

S11E10: He's mad about Grace's death, enough so to take revenge. It's only when Ryan confronts him, and accepts him as family, that he will let go of his hatred.

Ryan: the frustrated underachiever with attachment issues

S11E01: he's frustrated with his disability, and reluctant to accept Graham as a family member. He's been abandoned by his father in a time of need, and is angry about it. He's also angry about losing his grandmother.

S11E02: He's good with mechanical things and engines. He's frustrated with his disability again, but this time he perserveres.

S11E03: He's still on the fence about Graham, but Graham's steadfast defense of him against the racists around them is starting to show him how much he cares.

S11E04: He confides in Graham for the first time here. He's starting to open up about his feelings regarding his dad.

S11E05: He talks to Yaz about his dad, letting yet another person in to his inner thoughts

S11E09: He worries he's no good with kids (because he didn't have a good parental example, maybe?), but ends up protecting the young girl very well and realizes he did okay

S11E10: He believes in the Doctor's pacifism, and convinces Graham that revenge isn't worth it

S11E11: He confronts his father, calmly explaining his issues, and when his father tries to sacrifice himself to save him he realizes that people aren't perfect, and Aaron did the best he could.

Yaz: the underappreciated police woman with a kind heart

S01E01: She's bored at work, and believes she's capable of handling trickier cases. She goes out of her way to de-escalate situations during her work. She's not completely confident in her skills, though, because she lets the Doctor take charge of the investigation.

S01E02: She likes talking to people she meets and listening to their stories

S01E03: She's been discrimnated against because of her ethnicity and religion

S01E04: She shows her empathy again, the only one of the crew who notices that the Doctor is desperate not to lose her new friends. Her family doens't have much confidence in her ("Yaz has friends?"), though, which bothers her enough that she leaves

S01E06: She's headstrong, insisting on staying to see her grandmother's wedding.

S01E07: This is where she starts to really come into her own. She goes out of her way to help her co-worker, and does "police stuff" when she says she'll go and notify his family about his death.

S01E08: She immediately takes charge of dealing with the witness/victim, the herbalist's granddaughter. She leaves the rest of the team to go investigate (police stuff!)

S01E09: Again, she's the one who deals with the victim, taking the little girl's statement and using her police training to calm her down (police stuff!)

S01E10: She helps deal with the victims again, both with the ship's captain and the two religious thinkers. She's brave, too, agreeing to risk the effects of the planet so she can help save the day. (police stuff!)

It's absolutely fine if you didn't like how they went about characterizing the companions, but it's clear that this characterization DID happen. Criticize the methods all you like, but you can't deny that character work was done in Series 11.

The part of Britzit-247 seen in Remembrance is a city with elements reminiscent of London which is populated by individuals who all resemble angry Nigel Farages and only say the word "Britzit". There's also a giant robot with the face of Boris Johnson. The Eleventh Doctor explains that Britzit-247 was founded by a group of Britons who "got cross about something or other" and decided to "travel across the stars" to start their own independent colony.

 No.193578

Tim Price was credited on The Tsuranga Conundrum for creating (and naming) the alien creature in that story, the Pting.

Price had worked with the writer's room early in series 11's development. The team loved the "brilliant and unusual" name devised by Price, and kept it for the episode. In the long run, he was unavailable to work on the series. (DWM 531) Price was listed as the creature's creator in the end credits for Tsuranga, which was ultimately written by Chris Chibnall.

Bizarre. It doesn't strike me as a particularly creative concept or name. The idea of a little gremlin that eats/destroys a vehicle almost feels like a cliche actually. I wonder if there was anybody else involved in the writer's room that wasn't involved in production.

Also, I didn't realise they actually did the writer's room idea, either. I knew it was rumoured ages ago. Pretty baffling that it didn't seem to result in any difference. Why are Chibnall's episodes still noticeably worse if they did the writer's room approach?

Well, right now, Steven is strolling the streets of Richmond in a Press Gang T-Shirt and flip-flops, talking to himself as he mesmerises a new episode into existence. If you see him and gangs of children are laughing, then it'll be a good one. If he's kicking a tree and acting a story out with a toy Terileptil then we're all in trouble. By the way, I love it when I hear a writer is pacing the streets or clifftops. Doctor Who is an adrenalized and exciting show. I'm not sure it can be written in the corner of Costa.

Ragnorak has terribly bland set design and the saturation is ridiculously inconsistent. It's also even more clear than usual how little the 'directors' have to do with the action sequences in these movies (Black Widow's been turned down by people for that reason). Excellent use of the cast though, Taika really nailed that. But it's an ugly mishmash whose visuals are championed by the type of person who'll crank the saturation on it for tumblr gifsets. I'll happily concede the GOTGs though, they look good. It helps they actually have a real director.

I actually think the Civil War script is pretty damn tight, the handling of Black Panther especially. It's all very economical. The last ten minutes are absolutely fucking awful, when the entire conceit of the movie is bottomed out to reset to the status quo, but Black Panther actively developing/learning from the main conflict, and the handling of Zemo, were surprisingly good for an MCU movie.

The direction however…lol. I cannot believe this image is post colour grading and they actually chose a fucking airport as the setting for the big fight

Lazy as fuck.

 No.193864

Nearly everything about Kylo in TFA was well-done subversion that played into the new (and old!) stories in interesting, productive, and character-rich ways. A lot of the Finn stuff too. And Rogue One did it even better (god I love the scene where Cassian straight up kills his friend, not even touching the ending). I like how resolutely R1 refused to make its protag one of the spunky SW cliches too.

I also think the idea and casting of Rose's character in TLJ was sound, and that's all very intentional subversion.

>>193861

It definitely has problems but obviously most of them online are expressed in bad faith. We're safe here. One thing I dislike is how fucking boring the central character is in his own movie. He has a great dynamic character journey in Civil War, but in his own movie he's a hole. I also think the villain is written very haphazardly and cowardly. Whenever he starts making too much sense he randomly does some uncharacteristically thing flagged as le super evil, it's just trashy capeshity writing. Aquaman did a similar thing in whenever Orm made too much sense, having to signal that he's super le evil guys through some random act. The politics of these radical racial/environmental villains having to be flagged as for dismissal and abject removal by the protags who go on to basically maintain the status quo is beyond telling

>One of the best things about writing for Clara Oswald is that she's an almost inexhaustible source for exploring the most fascinating themes. Everything from deconstructing the conventional hero's journey to transhumanism to self-destruction to self-actualization. And of course, these themes frequently overlap and inform each other. Honestly, I don't think you could wish for a more interesting central character for a sci-fi fantasy series, short of an eccentric Time Lord who can frequently reinvent themselves and their show.

"Charley, C'rizz, Sam, Lucie, Molly…Fitz…" would have been good, hell replace Sam with a comics companion even, but BF is the most experienced EU thing by fans these days and Moff is personally familiar with 8's audios so I kinda get it. Wait Moff read the EDAs too wtf. Listing any more companions than he listed would have been silly but swapping out one or two, or adding Fitz, would have been a better move imo.

Gates present you with a choice: this side or that side, this life or that life, out or in. And for the Doctor’s companion Romana, this gate offers her what’s probably the most difficult choice of her life.
