The TARDIS wikia is so FUCKING stupid, it has a big list of all songs in Doctor Who but pollutes it with every song ever mentioned in any book or short story or anything ever, so if you're just looking for songs in the show you're out of luck cause it's a shit tonne of clutter. >"Voodoo Child" was a rock and roll song favoured by the Master. He quoted a lyric from the song — "Here come the drums!" — and played it over the Valiant's loudspeakers as he celebrated the start of the Toclafane invasion. His wife, Lucy Saxon, danced to the track at the same time. It was likely that he identified with the song because of the drumbeats he heard in his own head. (TV: The Sound of Drums)

Some didn't want you around

Those spammy posters always made you stand out in a crowd

But someone picked you from the bunch

One glance was all it took

Now it's much too late for me to take a second look

Oh Nilso give us one more chance

(To show you that we love you)

Won't you please let us

Oh Nilso I was blind to let you go

But now since I see you in his arms

Has anyone here been subbed to the Paul Cornell newsletter from the start? I'm trying to compile all his "My Who History" segments, but I'm missing the first two from April/May 2018, covering "Stairway to Heaven" and "Teenage Kicks".

 No.202555

Today in "ideas Briggs Finish should have implemented a long time ago, except they so obstinately and nonsensically adhere to the Classic Who format":

>I'm binge listening through all of Big Finish's Doctor Who lines right now and, man, is it hard to keep things straight. With the three-story for each Doctor releases of the main range by the time I get back to each Doctor I've completely lost track of what happened before. I'm just at the box sets for the eighth Doctor and the gaps between those are killer. This happened most recently on the second set of adventures with Flip and Six, where I had almost completely forgotten what they'd done the first time around and where she came from because I'd crammed so many other stories in between. Don't even get me started on Seven/Ace/Hex storyline where one line from 15 episodes ago can affect the entire tale. I find myself diving into the Wiki non-stop, but Big Finish seems to think I've got a memory like a steel trap (I do not). I can't imagine what it's like if you have to wait a year just to hop back in or maybe it's easier since things are more spread out…

>"Would anyone else appreciate Big Finish recaps at the beginning of ongoing audios?"

That's actually genuinely a good idea imo. Can do it as a separate audio file even, like the way the ident is if you download it.

It would be best as an actual narrated recap, not a flashback previously on, given the format though. "The Sixth Doctor is a blah blah, Flip is a blah blah, recently they've been blah blah."

Yeah, that's one problem. On the one hand, straight narration might be a little awkward, and I appreciate "clips of past episodes" style recaps because the short clips help trigger your memory of the rest of the story. But on the other hand there's not really a clear way to do that on audio, short of requiring writers to include lines with that specific purpose in mind, which would be potentially cringey. "Hi there, I'm Hex" nah.

both games are not like the new films or anything, you dont need nostalgia for the movies to understand them, they carved out their own new story/ideas/characters/setting/etc. no direct connection to the movies or anything but obviously theyre written with the assumption people know what a lightsaber is. 2 might be slightly more impactful if one is more familiar with the movies but only in the sense of…eh….honestly being less familiar might work in 2's favour as well. you dont need to be into star wars to enjoy them basically.

There are other Tom Baker seasons that would make way more sense to do over S18 like Season 17, and why do Season 19 over Season 21? Why even go to the Davison-era at all as the third release instead of a more popular classic Doctor like Pertwee? you'd think Season 10 would be a no-brainer since it's Pertwee's first season and Spearhead From Space already had a great blu-ray restoration.

Why not release Season 1 since it's a good selection of episodes and people like Hartnell but also is the first fucking season of Doctor Who, released. It markets itself!

 No.202801

>The classic series brushed [the public remembering alien invasions] off to avoid excessive serialisation, which is understandable. The way the format worked back then warranted making it easy for casual viewers to tune in and know what was going on, and because it ran for so long, it gave the opportunity for different generations to experience ‘first alien Earth invasion’ without needing context as to what people in-universe do and don’t know.

>The invasions from 2004-2009 were all remembered by the public and well-documented. Culture at that time was well aware and well superstitious of alien life, including being scared to go out at Christmas because even the characters in-universe thought RTD Christmas specials were predictable. Then the crack in time erased everyone’s memory of aliens, except people who who either work with them and experience them regularly (UNIT, Torchwood, Van Statten), or people who’s lives were changed significantly by their encounter (Adelaide Brooke).

>The Smith era, being more creative and sci-fi heavy, abandoned the takeover plots and we only had one large-scale encounter, written by Chris Chibnall. The cubes were mundane and random enough that by the time the Cybermen were piling out of graveyards, people were still scared of them and not used to it. By their knowledge, they had only seen aliens once, and even then the general public wasn’t aware that the cubes were extraterrestrial.

>Then the Monk invasion in S10 ended on a memory reset, all tidy for Chibnall to have a clean slate.

- Revives the continually-evolving series storyline for arguably the first time since Eccleston, in an exceedingly well judged fashion that enables multiple distinct mini arcs (basically pre-Rory, mid-Rory, and post-Rory's erasure) and an intricately woven conclusion.

- Interrogates the problematic sexual and psychological dynamics of the post-TV Movie "Doctor as handsome stranger" myth using a deconstruction of the fairytale heroine who grows up and is detached from reality. Reworks the Doctor as someone with the power to unite others rather than separate them (culminating in the TARDIS as the wedding gift)

- Is a moving tribute to the power and revolutionary potential of the young imagination before it is later deadened by capitalism.

- Provides such a cohesive thesis statement on "Doctor Who as fairytale" that it pretty much closes the book and nobody ever has to do it again now, thank god.

- I think this is underremarked because we're so used to it after Moffat's entire run, but the sheer jump in how the show treated the Doctor as someone who's regularly fallible and ambiguous (rather than someone who only has a crisis in very special episodes i.e. Ten), and as someone who's so old he's actually prone to denial and senility, felt like a major shift from RTD.

This all sounds great but when I look at the actual episodes…

The Eleventh Hour - great premiere, yeah for sure, not as good as Rose but more immediately inventive, great stuff

The Beast Below - fucking awful, even Chibnall randomly says it's shit

Victory of the Daleks - invariably raises interesting ideas despite itself but is fucking terrible

Flesh and Stone | Angels whatever - I know lots of people love this but I find it basically as dreary and dull as Beast Below, a woefully plodding slog only briefly punctuated by interesting arc moments in the second half

The Vampires of Venice - not bad, the better side of whithouse, but hardly something grand

Amy's Choice - legitimately brilliant, one of the best episodes of the show

The Hungry earth cold blood - I think there's a very real case to be made for this being the worst 2parter of NewWho. It is shamefully dreadful, an absolute embarrassment on every level.

Vincent and the Doctor - I know this is beloved but while some ideas it gestures at are great and there's good performances in it, on a scene to scene level it is extraordinarily sloppy and constantly misjudged what would be the most interesting way to tell its story

The Lodger - brilliant, such an exquisite use of the star that it subtly positioned how all future episodes would use him

The Pandorica Opens - an effective take on the RTD penultimate episode but nothing special until the very ending

The Big Bang - fantastic, deconstructive and reconstructive ending, brilliant

That doesn't seem like a home run to me beyond wisely setting a great episode as its last (the inverse of S3), it's riddled with terrible episodes. Everything you point out is critical and absolutely true…in the Moffat episodes of the series. And he didn't do a Chibnall and write most of them.

I flat out disagree with this assessment of Beast Below, and you might recall that Chibnall actually praised the script but felt it was let down by the direction. Kicking off a series with an episode about the UK violently suppressing knowledge of the monstrous abuses that serve as the foundation of its prosperity, and its citizens willingly joining in with the amnesia, is at least as furious a political statement as RTD's Who ever made. It makes the same basical ethical argument as Kill The Moon and Thin Ice (that mankind's future is not actually worth the cruelty). It undercuts the myth of the happy slave by basically comparing it to an entity out of the fantastical. And it all takes place in a playtime dystopia that feels like a leftover from McCoy. I really like this episode, Matt is brilliant in it and Karen is actually better than usual.

Legitimately interested if you didn't defend the Angel 2parter out of conceding it's poor to a degree, or just because The Beast Below is more salient to you. I can see everything you're saying about the episode and I've rewatched it multiple times but something about the entire construction of it feels so off and workmanlike to me. The actual smilers and the pacing and the way the monarchy is presented it, it feels so undercooked and off-base-ed-ley quip-esque. I do like the stealth Torchwood sequel-ness of it though.

The Angel two parter seems like an irreconcilable point because I agree that, essentially, it's not really "about anything" in the way that most genuinely great Who stories are, and if that's a deal-breaker then it's understandable. It's basically an exercise in flicking the Doctor, River and Amy around a series of horror setpieces, fantasy concepts and reveals. It does flit around some of the territory that Moffat gets into later like the Doctor as a military figure ("the equivalent of an army") and a false idol. I think the entire thing is basically held up by how good Moffat is at dialogue and pacing, I don't consider it especially scary.

The cheesiness of Beast Below maybe has a different ring to me because I got into Who with S5 so it was one of my formative episodes. I just sort of absorbed that as the given style of the show, and having everything feel so fake-twee made sense to me in how it's reminiscent of a pantomime, a bit Punch-and-Judy-esque. But I think (as much as the whole ep is fairly flimsy in execution) there is a genuine purpose to presenting Liz 10 as a quippy, corny comic book archetype. She ends up being dragged down by her own complicity in the very system she thinks she's rebelling against, and essentially made like all the other characters. Starting out as essentially an unrealistic fictional idea (the cool, radical, superhero queen) she goes on to explicitly fail in providing redemption. Implicit in this is a criticism of the idealised version of monarchy; even if you take it to its conclusion and have a queen who's loved by the populace because she genuinely loves and wants to fight for them, she still can't actually do it. And within the story more generally, it's a sign that retreating into these fantasies (including the Doctor) isn't an antidote to the brokenness of society.
