>scott adams

Love & Monsters.

I like it when stories end. I would have liked it if Doctor Who ended. They had the only real end point possible with Matt Smith being the final regeneration. I actually stopped watching after that. I figured I'd have to end it myself since BBC wouldn't.

this is such a blast from the past. i remember people genuinely being mad about the extended regeneration thing

>yfw if tentoo didn't count and capaldi's final story was about accepting death rather than "why go on"

If Hurt counted, Tentoo counted. There's no difference between them.

>yfw moffat made sure he was the writer that got to deal with the regeneration limit but wrote a crap story

hurt was an actual regeneration where his body changed

tentoo you could argue doesn't count because it was aborted before the body change part which is the actual regeneration

kino in the streamo

No. Semantics. They're the same. If you include Hurt on your "all Doctors" fanart, you must include Tentoo as well.

jog on the spot

How does the handy regeneration abortion even work? The doctor funnelled all of the energy emanating from his body into the hand, correct?

But that was all energy that had already left his body - so whatever effect it has on its body should have already happened by the time it could be shot out and directed elsewhere. Pointing his energy streams at the hand has no reason to prevent the regeneration from happening.

don't remind me about mysterio ever again

Why? It's a good episode.

I would say disliking Mysterio is "a meme", but it's more a phenomenon that we maybe get one or two people suffering in here at a time.

The Return of Doctor Mysterio is better than Heaven Sent.

At what?

Being a masterpiece.

if it did, nardole would be talking about the doctor's oath and wouldn't be taking novelty trips to get fancy jewels and shit

reality is that mysterio is not canon and does not fit into continuity

Dr who used SOME regen energy to heal, but didn't want to change so there was excess energy which he stored in the hand for safekeeping.

Who's gonna tell Nilso about the wiki

is it kill

>everyone gushing over an episode where the Doctor wanders around some castle for an hour monologuing to himself

What happened to when Dr Who was fun?

Wikia stuff have started scrutinising it more eg demanding we remove all instances of certain offensive language from the site. We're looking to see how workable it would be to transfer the wikia over to a new host so we wouldn't have to deal with that sort of thing, or other issues we get from the wikia getting attention from outside

>Dr Who

Intelligent and deep stories are better than the pure bouncing-off-the-walls madness of Smith.

What qualifies as offensive language?

Oh, and fag. Also fag.

Is this the sole word?

"We've had a complaint about this wiki, and after looking around I can see why!"

Between that and the Sandifer and Doctor Who Stalker Reports cases of having to change/delete pages, I do think at least backup hosting the wiki somewhere else is a good idea. The wiki gets so much attention.

I don't mind the culling of these words that much desu but then again I'm not the once making the choices here.

Even all legit problems with the words aside, they're basically always deployed very uncreatively, but wikia staff breathing down our neck about having to "clean up" our wiki makes it a lot less comfy to have our little wild west of doctor who fun online.

Any Doctor Who episodes where the villain wins?

In a meta showrunning sense, the villain seems to have won, no?

Sleep No More

Yeah, I couldn't give a damn about where/how the words are used but you're right about wikifags breathing down our necks being incredibly uncomfy.

Depends if you mean total victory or pyrrhic victory.

Any /who/ happenings where the villain won?

The cleaning up doesn't necessarily bother me either, but there are plenty of parties out there who'd love to see the wiki deleted for various. It should be moved for safekeeping, regardless of our motivations.

Yup. >>20757

Wikia dot is a potential new but there are concerns its TOS could become a problem in future. Part of the attraction of Wikidot is that transferring the wiki as is is is perfectly doable ( >>20685 ) but perhaps some of the other potential hosts allow for that as well.

Another list of potential hosts is here >>20719

I feel like we're running in circles here. Have we narrowed anything down? Better sooner than later.

Cloister and his banana republic here.

Miraheze is open source and the TOS doesn't seem to have anything we'd run up against.

Unless "Posting illegal content or harassment on a Wiki" would be an issue?

Transfer from the wikia over to there seems workable https://meta.miraheze.org/wiki/FAQ#How_do_I_move_my_wiki.3F

Amy's Choice.

I'm right.

I don't think we've ever posted/written anything illegal. Questionable, sure, but outright illegal? Nah. Harrassment may be more of an issue, but would people like Orford or NV know anything about Mirehaze? The more obscure the host, the better.

great post…I can tell you have legitimate criticisms of the episode rather than totally irrational gut reactions to its central theme

if you ever see a really smug person who says that the sonic screwdriver is a magic wand now and it only ever used to be used for unscrewing things, send them this

A tacky premise dooms an episode.

I thought people said the sonic screwdriver was that from day one?

No. They only say it became that in [era they dislike].

>it's bad because it's about x

see previous reply

just admit you can't explain why the episode is bad or fails in anything it is attempting to do, it just made you ree because you don't understand that no genre is off limits for Doctor Who

How does the Doctor fit in a chair designed for a man without legs?

But when 11 did it, he held off the regeneration. When 10 did it, he didn't suddenly stop - he continued emanating energy, just directed it somewhere. And as I already stated, the energy only leaves his body once it's had its effect on him - directing the energy beams into the hand should not stop the regeneration process

he ripped out other bits from the chair as well, they're in a pile just off camera next to davros's torso

I think a rape/revenge is kinda off-limits for Dr. Who.

It didn't really stop, either way.

I think that even tacky premises, if produced and executed well, can still entertaining at least and good at best. Some of the foundations of Who are a little tacky.

I didn't find it very well produced, I thought its parodies of superhero cinema felt very early-2000s in its references and I didn't find the actors for the main American characters to be anything but grating. Good ending tho.

Those are much fairer criticisms. "Super Hero", as a genre, isn't necessarily tacky. I'm not a huge fan of Doctor Mysterio, but nothing about it really bothered me.

Mysterio unironically is one of my favourite Capaldi eps and probably the one I have nicest memories of watching.

I agree.

I think harassment is a really strong term too. We don't go out of our way to insult these people or bring them to the wiki; we just happen to have pages criticizing them in crude ways.

has Neo seen The Isle of Dogs???

I agree but it's how other people take it that's more important and unfortunately public figures find the very public wiki quite easily.

No, I will as soon as I can but movie release dates (especially Japanese ones) can be screwed up here. I do enjoy the films of Wes Anderson though.

Is it possible that google's algorithms have miraheze unprioritised and less likely to show up on page 1, compared to wikia?

Yes, although if we got equally high amounts of traffic that would affect the rankings.

Put Nilso on the wiki.

Oh yes, I completely agree. I'm must saying that if push really came to shove at another host, semantics are on our side.

Neo is pro Second Amendment and anti First Amendment

Neo is not American.

Put the wiki on Nilso.

Neo still has opinions on American politics

Neo cannot recall what amendment is what offhand.

first is speech second is gun

Imagine cutting out his brain and converting it into a fleshy, pink database on which the wiki is stored. Then we'd put it back in his body and hook his body up to the internet.

I'm from a country without free speech.

>pro Second Amendment

>anti First Amendment

No I mean we tattoo it on him. A wetwire ala Johnny Mnemonic would work too I suppose.

I'd prefer making a Vision style personification of the wiki.

Like a hybrid?

I 100% certain that if the wiki was sentient it would go mad and wipe out all life on Earth

Is Neo pro-erasing doctor who episodes so the only way to watch them is with a recon?

Only Whithouse's.

Nilso is refusing to get an abortion and Neo is terrified.

What the fuck? When did this board become active again?

When /who/ was kill for the off-season.

I'm on the verge of tears.

Child support will cripple you.

Not if I cripple Nilso first.

a little over a month ago, out of nowhere a mod unceremoniously told us /who/ could not make any more threads by using a templated message the same they used for /got/ years ago

in frantic confusion a discord was made, but it quickly became apparent that discord didn't allow for /who/ style discussions (plus it was attracting new people from all the wrong places) so we decided to come here for real

That's not what you sucked last night.

One of the advantages of fucking a man is that there's no chance of him getting pregnant ;)

I sucked the semen out of your penis and put it into a turkey baster and squirted the baster up my vagina. I've been doing it since Day 1. It's how I got pregnant.

Don't prey on Neo in his time of need.

That's a dirty tactic, Nilso. You should be ashamed.

aids is like a baby, except it's a physical death rather than a metaphorical one

But I didn't want to go.

I have questions. Where did you store this fluid during your clandestine bastering? Surely you didn't keep it in your mouth, and the Neo I know wouldn't leave without kissing his beloved Nilso. Surely he would have known the taste of his own semen as one might infer from his curious cat answers, if not that the volume of fluid still present.

The fact that so many anons still name Neo as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" tripfag ever only tells you how far shitposting still is from becoming a serious art. Stream commentators have long recognized that the greatest streamchads of all times are Nilso and Ingiga, who were not the most famous or most (You)d or most active of their times, let alone of all times. Classical anons rank the highly controversial TomBakersGaintWang over classical tripfags who were highly popular in threads around /tv/. Nu-anons are still blinded by (You)s. Neo gets more (You)s than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore he must be the greatest. Streamchads grow up discussing a lot of kino of the past, older anons grow up remembering a lot of tripfags of the past. McGann-chan anons are often totally ignorant of the /who/ of the past, they barely know the comfiest eras. No wonder they will think that Neo did anything worthy of being archived. In a sense, Neo is emblematic of the status of /who/ as a whole: too much attention paid to inconsequential shitposting (be it Vengaboys or Greg's Kitchen) and too little to the merits of thoughtful contributions. If somebody composes the most divine shitposts but no anons give him (You)s and repost him in every thread, a lot of users will ignore him. If a lot of anons pick up a tripfag who is as stereotyped as can be but launches her or him throughout the general, your average thread will waste rivers of posts on her or him. This is the sad status of /who/: anons are basically publicists working for trips, shitposters and the wiki. They simply highlight what forced memes the general wants to generate (You)s from.

Hopefully, one not-too-distant day, there will be a clear demarcation between a great tripfag like Cloister, who never got many (You)s, and commercial products like Neo. At such a time, users will study their /who/ history and understand which posters accomplished which shitposting feat, and which simply exploited it commercially.

Neo's "Australian" shitposting removed any trace of kino memes from /who/. It replaced comfy OC with forced trivial references, and lusty Nilso attitudes with smug Matt Smith smiles.

Contemporary tripfags never spoke highly of Neo, and for good reason. They could never figure out why Neo's shitposts should be regarded more highly than their own. They knew that Neo was simply lucky to become a /who/ phenomenon (thanks to "Neganon", which had nothing to do with his shitposting merits). That phenomenon kept alive interest in his (mediocre) shitposting endeavours to this day.

Alternate Doctors. Or do you mean who the actors are?

Until now, only you and Nilso knew they were alternate Doctors. Now that you've told me, three people know.

But I can literally link to archived discussions on 4chan Nilso had with multiple users about these alternate Doctors.

That was Nilso samefagging to try and drum up discussion about things that clearly aren't canon.

I expect that when Briggs Finish gets Capaldi that their first set will be Capaldi and Missy together during either the gap between Extremis-Mysterio-Pilot or Empress of Mars-Raven-World Enough and Time. Back before BF got their new series license, and the idea of new Doctors having audios actually genuinely excited me, I always pictured them as being slotted into the Main Range alongside Colin, McCoy, and Davison on some sort of regular basis. The occasional boxset format doesn't really interest me.

I have to do this, Clara. It's the only way. I have to be strong.

I should have known from the very beginning. Of course. The portrait of you, the creature from my own nightmares. This place is my own bespoke torture chamber, intended for me only. And all those skulls in the water. How could there be other prisoners in my Hell?

The answer, of course, is there never were any other prisoners. And the stars, they weren't in the wrong place, and I haven't time travelled.

I've just been here a very, very long time.

Every room resets. Remember I told you that? Every room reverts to its original condition. Logically, the teleporter should do the same.

Teleporter. Fancy word. Just like 3D printers, really, except they break down living matter and information, and transmit it. All you have to do is add energy. The room has reset, returned to its original condition when I arrived. That means there's a copy of me still in the hard drive. Me, exactly as I was, when I first got here, seven thousand years ago.

All I have to find is some energy. And all you need for energy is something to burn.

How long can I keep doing this, Clara? Burning the old me, to make a new one?

That's true, he isn't the same. People get confused by the line in Hell Bent where he tells Clara that he remembers every single cycle of him running around and punching the wall and think the consciousness managed to pass between each Doctor but it's more similar to clones. The Doctor dies in Face the Raven and then Heaven Sent has a series of clones made from the dead Doctor.

There's a line in Heaven Sent too about how he always remembers at one stage.

If I didn't know better, I'd say I've travelled seven thousand years into the future.

Nearly a billion years.

>The portrait of you[…] This place is my own bespoke torture chamber

>implying he didn't paint it himself

if you're trying to meme heaven sent into being made fun of for moff dialogue it's not going to work

Allow me to quote the Moff himself:

>Well technically, it shouldn't be possible that he remembers. Each time he burns himself up to power the teleport, he prints a new version of the man he was, with only the memories he had on arrival. So what does he mean, when he says he remembers, when he clearly can't? Well first, memory is a funny thing - we manufacture memories all the time. Stories your parents told you about you when you were a baby become memories you can't really have. The party you remember going to at school, and then discover you could never have attended. Memories become stories, the Doctor tells us. But I think stories become memories, too. So in that moment when the Doctor figures out the only way to break through the wall is to keep making new versions of himself, and puts it together with the fact that seven thousands years have passed without time travel, and realises that - oh dear God - he's been doing that very thing for a long time, it feels like he remembers. In that plunging moment, he feels the weight of the centuries behind, and the horror of the millennia ahead. In other words, he makes a memory where one can't exist.

>That's one explanation. Personally, I think there's more to it. Remember, he's trapped inside his own confession dial. The castle chambers, and the monster slouching towards him, are composed of his own worst nightmares, and his nightmares are composed of his worst memories. In a world designed to suck your bad dreams from your mind and feed them back to you, isn't it possible that his worst day - the one he's living right now, again and again - is hanging in the air around him? He's trapped in the Wi-Fi of his bad dreams, and he can't shut them out.

>So, yes, I suppose he has 4.5 billion years' worth of memories in his head. But loads of the details are identical, so for the Doctor's sake, let's assume that a lot of data compression is possible! He's the Doctor - surely he's as clever as a digital download (especially as he sort of is one now).

probably because the MCU creative team is only exposed to midbrow genre shit so that's where they get their ideas from

I'm bemused by how people think I'm mocking it.

If you think because /who/ is dead, we are weak, then you understand very little. If you are any part of making fun of Heaven Sent for Moff dialogue, then you understand nothing at all.

The episode hinges on repositioning the Doctor as a sort of deterministic figure, him magically being the literal same would dull so much of the greatness the episode achieves. It's such a great imaging of the character that Moff dips into the same well later, like in The Doctor Falls with the Cybermen being reimagined in the same way (when that take on the Cybermen collides with that same take on the Doctor, we even get a musical reprise of Breaking the Wall/The Shepherd's Boy to illuminate that). I actually think Twice Upon a Time could have done some interesting stuff with that, more explictly drawing regeneration as the ultimate in repeating loops and cycles (life itself), and they did reprise the same cue, but it wasn't developed at all.

>the MCU creative team is only exposed to midbrow genre shit

The trouble is, when simulants develop enough independent intelligence to realise what they are, there's a risk they'll rebel. Those deaths, they weren't suicide. Those were people escaping. I'd rank the MCU movies more or less as:

>Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

>Iron Man 3

>Captain America: Civil War

>Guardians of the Galaxy

>Black Panther

>Avengers: Infinity War

>Doctor Strange

>Thor: Ragnorak

>The Avengers

>Iron Man

>Captain America: The Winter Soldier

>Avengers: Age of Ultron

>Spider-Man: Homecoming

>Captain America: The First Avenger

>Iron Man 2

>Thor: The Dark World

>The Incredible Hulk

Infinity War was fascinating in finally legitimately abandoning any semblance of penetrability for newcomers. I respected that quite a bit. The MCU has reached the point where it can genuinely, not just in marketing-speak, release a film that is more sequel and prequel to other films than a standalone film of its own. That's not a criticism, I admire that they ditched doing the frustrating half-measure they usually do.

The near three hours flew by for me, the pace of action and new character interactions kept me entertained pretty consistently except for a slight lag in the middle where there was just so much plot to churn through. Avengers: Age of Ultron is a deeply flawed movie but Joss fought very hard for the relaxed, comfy farmhouse scenes of pure character interaction, and they played to everyone's strengths so well. The MCU is full of great actors with well-realised characters that are easy to invest in and enjoy, but it's also full of plots that don't serve them well, and continuity that actively degrades them.

Well Joss is long gone by now so there was no such characterkino in this film, and I think the writers/directors (same team from Winter Soldier and Civil War) got overwhelmed by the story demands here and failed to give most of the characters much of a reason to be there. I was surprised how well the Guardians were realised in the film (less surprised when I found out apparently Gunn literally rewrote all their lines), and enjoyed Doctor Strange in particular. I love what Downey Jr does with Iron Man but that character is so, so poorly served by the series at this point, it's genuinely amazing he manages to make the character work in spite of the incoherent writing he's served film after film.

I was greatly amused by Captain America's s i x l i n e s. Thanos had potential but was poorly utilised, what interesting stuff they could have done with contrasting his misguided utilitarianism with the human's Disneyesque idealism was undercut by the strength of the Guardian's characters (Star Lord demonstrating genuine love and respect for Gamora and recognition of her agency in attempting to kill her as asked kind of undoes any commentary the film could make on how Thanos follows through on pragmatism where no one else does. The ending did not work for me, it was too much of a "PART 1 OF 2" relic and emulated some of the worst aspects of comics, the complete disengagement with any effort to ground death or emotions realistically, instead completely undermining the concept of death for empty narrative spectacle, theatrics, shock factor. I was surprised how comparatively well-served Thor was by the movie. I'm interested to see how the sequel works, I'm guessing it will be a sort of tribute to the original (aka surviving) Avengers before bowing them out since most of their contracts are ending. I've seen the leaked set pics that point to some potentially interesting developments that hopefully reflect on the franchise in interesting ways.

>Avengers: Age of Ultron is a deeply flawed movie but Joss fought very hard for the relaxed, comfy farmhouse scenes of pure character interaction, and they played to everyone's strengths so well

That movie was so boring I stopped watching right around the time they were having some formal party or some shit

What were the six lines?

I don't remember any offhand apart from "We don't trade lives", it was just funny how little screentime/dialogue he got. In a movie with this many characters some were always gonna get under-featured, I was just amused that it ended up being him and Panther

That was the other big scene I liked from the movie lel.

I'm not emotionally invested in the marvel universe so maybe that's why that style of downtime scene didn't work for me

That makes sense. Though I wouldn't say I'm emotionally invested in the series per se myself, but in some of the films I can emotionally invest in the characters just fine. Until the endings at least.

>Never trust answers - they're the opposite of conversation

Fun fact, that's not actually a Doctor line, but something Moffat has said himself.

Everyone's memory is a mess. Life is a mess. Everyone's got memories of a holiday they've never been on or a party they never went to, or met someone for the first time and felt like they've known them all their lives. Time is being rewritten all around us, every day. People think their memories are bad, but their memories are fine. The past is really like that.

what if in the future there's some catastrophe that wipes out all nuwho episodes and future generations think that the whoflix edits are the actual episodes

Why would anyone take a selfie?

He didn't want anyone to move or do anything at all, and dumb pop culture jokes like that are like a reflex to him (and Moffat).

Or if you mean literally, it means "I would be very annoyed if you took a selfie", "on pain of death" being hyperbolically saying "I will kill you if you do X thing I find annoying".

I like the conflation between Moff and 12's style of talking.

It was an example of something people do, and he wanted the people there to do nothing at all. 12 also (like Moffat) resorts to dumb pop culture/technology jokes like that when stressed.

There was a Woolies near me but it shut down about 15 years ago

Jesus christ I'm not THAT strapped for cash, anon. Knoppers are god tier though

these things? this shit good but raspberry jam donuts are better

kek, knoppers were such a meme among me and my high school friends, it's surreal to see them posted here

I meant that in the sense of "it is an active action, in contrast to the utter inaction he is requesting".

I'm fairly neutral on the line, it doesn't bother me but I don't love it or anything, but gun to my head I think it's good in that its further demonstrating 12's stress in a way consistent with his characterisation and dialogue tics.

on pain of death no one post t. nilso

oh god i forgot about the donuts. hnnnng

but with cookies i prefer the 4 packs with white choc and raspberry, salted caramel choc chip, or shortbread.

really miss those

t. Nilso

fair enuf

out of curiosity what are other examples of 12 joking about tech or pop culture when stressed?

Would you consider Cats an Australian/British hybrid?

I had completely forgotten that cats lived in the UK for a while desu

Neo wasn't off in his prediction that Legion S2 would be influenced by Twin Peaks S3, I keep seeing what feel like little homages (there was a scene in a pink room where the editing kept skipping about like Cooper with Naido, a scene of a CGI bug crawling into someone's head just like the frogmoth, and a few face superpositions as well).

mainly going for these

The whole X is Y for Z thing often dips into that territory, they're as much Moffisms as 12isms. Pop culture makes me think of the Mario stuff in Extremis but I think that is more genuine attempt at an explanation than offhanded quip.

I can never forget~

Ah there you go. I expect Westworld S2 might have some evidence of The Return's influence too, but won't know until I watch it…probably sometime much later this year, months after its finished.

i am really. i'm british on my mum's side and aussie on my dad's side.

t. Nilso

That makes sense. You are the hybrid. I'm pure Aussie going back quite a few generations myself.

have any convict ancestors? i know it's a badge of pride for a lot of people

I do want to live over in the UK for a while at some point though, probably 4 or so years away

I do indeed. Do you?

You'll hate it.

I suppose that's possible but I'd like the experience all the same.

i think so, yeah.

be prepared to stand on the other side of the escalator

Both of us pointedly not stating their specific crimes speaks volumes.

At least I won't get funny looks when I say "lift" like I do here.

>I meant that in the sense of "it is an active action, in contrast to the utter inaction he is requesting".

yeah but it doesn't come across that way imo. it's not phrased or delivered in the "don't even sneeze" sort of way, it comes across as 1.) selfies being an actual possibility in the setting, and 2.) an old guy yelling at youth culture in that embarrassing way that moffat revisits a lot

desu i hate hell bent's "man flu" line more

Ah I understand what you mean, yeah I completely understand your take. I guess the real difference then is that 2 doesn't bother me where it does bother you.

The man flu line bothers me not in that its comic, but in being indicative of Moff's wishy-washy attitude to regeneration that I think occasionally dulls the impact of otherwise strong moments.

Although I can kinda see the man flu line working as showing how 12 is trying to downplay and dismiss death all throughout in the episode for obvious reasons…but at that point I worry if I'm having a Sandifer-esque "defend Moff past the point of your own taste/logic" lapse.

Yes but it was canceled about 2 weeks ago
