I like it when stories end. I would have liked it if Doctor Who ended. They had the only real end point possible with Matt Smith being the final regeneration. I actually stopped watching after that. I figured I'd have to end it myself since BBC wouldn't.

How does the handy regeneration abortion even work? The doctor funnelled all of the energy emanating from his body into the hand, correct?

But that was all energy that had already left his body - so whatever effect it has on its body should have already happened by the time it could be shot out and directed elsewhere. Pointing his energy streams at the hand has no reason to prevent the regeneration from happening.

 No.21237

The fact that so many anons still name Neo as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" tripfag ever only tells you how far shitposting still is from becoming a serious art. Stream commentators have long recognized that the greatest streamchads of all times are Nilso and Ingiga, who were not the most famous or most (You)d or most active of their times, let alone of all times. Classical anons rank the highly controversial TomBakersGaintWang over classical tripfags who were highly popular in threads around /tv/. Nu-anons are still blinded by (You)s. Neo gets more (You)s than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore he must be the greatest. Streamchads grow up discussing a lot of kino of the past, older anons grow up remembering a lot of tripfags of the past. McGann-chan anons are often totally ignorant of the /who/ of the past, they barely know the comfiest eras. No wonder they will think that Neo did anything worthy of being archived. In a sense, Neo is emblematic of the status of /who/ as a whole: too much attention paid to inconsequential shitposting (be it Vengaboys or Greg's Kitchen) and too little to the merits of thoughtful contributions. If somebody composes the most divine shitposts but no anons give him (You)s and repost him in every thread, a lot of users will ignore him. If a lot of anons pick up a tripfag who is as stereotyped as can be but launches her or him throughout the general, your average thread will waste rivers of posts on her or him. This is the sad status of /who/: anons are basically publicists working for trips, shitposters and the wiki. They simply highlight what forced memes the general wants to generate (You)s from.

Hopefully, one not-too-distant day, there will be a clear demarcation between a great tripfag like Cloister, who never got many (You)s, and commercial products like Neo. At such a time, users will study their /who/ history and understand which posters accomplished which shitposting feat, and which simply exploited it commercially.

Neo's "Australian" shitposting removed any trace of kino memes from /who/. It replaced comfy OC with forced trivial references, and lusty Nilso attitudes with smug Matt Smith smiles.

Contemporary tripfags never spoke highly of Neo, and for good reason. They could never figure out why Neo's shitposts should be regarded more highly than their own. They knew that Neo was simply lucky to become a /who/ phenomenon (thanks to "Neganon", which had nothing to do with his shitposting merits). That phenomenon kept alive interest in his (mediocre) shitposting endeavours to this day.

But it might take me a little while, so do you want me to tell you a story? The Brothers Grimm, lovely fellas. They're on my darts team. According to them, there's this emperor and he asks this shepherd's boy, how many seconds in eternity? And the shepherd's boy says, there's this mountain of pure diamond. It takes an hour to climb it, and an hour to go around it. And every hundred years, a little bird comes and sharpens its beak on the diamond mountain. And when the entire mountain is chiselled away, the first second of eternity will have passed. You must think that's a hell of a long time. Personally, I think that's a hell of a bird.

I have to do this, Clara. It's the only way. I have to be strong.

I should have known from the very beginning. Of course. The portrait of you, the creature from my own nightmares. This place is my own bespoke torture chamber, intended for me only. And all those skulls in the water. How could there be other prisoners in my Hell?

The answer, of course, is there never were any other prisoners. And the stars, they weren't in the wrong place, and I haven't time travelled.

I've just been here a very, very long time.

Every room resets. Remember I told you that? Every room reverts to its original condition. Logically, the teleporter should do the same.

Teleporter. Fancy word. Just like 3D printers, really, except they break down living matter and information, and transmit it. All you have to do is add energy. The room has reset, returned to its original condition when I arrived. That means there's a copy of me still in the hard drive. Me, exactly as I was, when I first got here, seven thousand years ago.

All I have to find is some energy. And all you need for energy is something to burn.

How long can I keep doing this, Clara? Burning the old me, to make a new one?

That's true, he isn't the same. Allow me to quote the Moff himself:

>Well technically, it shouldn't be possible that he remembers. Each time he burns himself up to power the teleport, he prints a new version of the man he was, with only the memories he had on arrival. So what does he mean, when he says he remembers, when he clearly can't? Well first, memory is a funny thing - we manufacture memories all the time. Stories your parents told you about you when you were a baby become memories you can't really have. The party you remember going to at school, and then discover you could never have attended. Memories become stories, the Doctor tells us. But I think stories become memories, too. So in that moment when the Doctor figures out the only way to break through the wall is to keep making new versions of himself, and puts it together with the fact that seven thousands years have passed without time travel, and realises that - oh dear God - he's been doing that very thing for a long time, it feels like he remembers. In that plunging moment, he feels the weight of the centuries behind, and the horror of the millennia ahead. In other words, he makes a memory where one can't exist.

>That's one explanation. Personally, I think there's more to it. Remember, he's trapped inside his own confession dial. The castle chambers, and the monster slouching towards him, are composed of his own worst nightmares, and his nightmares are composed of his worst memories. In a world designed to suck your bad dreams from your mind and feed them back to you, isn't it possible that his worst day - the one he's living right now, again and again - is hanging in the air around him? He's trapped in the Wi-Fi of his bad dreams, and he can't shut them out.

>So, yes, I suppose he has 4.5 billion years' worth of memories in his head. But loads of the details are identical, so for the Doctor's sake, let's assume that a lot of data compression is possible! He's the Doctor - surely he's as clever as a digital download (especially as he sort of is one now).

The episode hinges on repositioning the Doctor as a sort of deterministic figure, him magically being the literal same would dull so much of the greatness the episode achieves. It's such a great imaging of the character that Moff dips into the same well later, like in The Doctor Falls with the Cybermen being reimagined in the same way (when that take on the Cybermen collides with that same take on the Doctor, we even get a musical reprise of Breaking the Wall/The Shepherd's Boy to illuminate that). I actually think Twice Upon a Time could have done some interesting stuff with that, more explictly drawing regeneration as the ultimate in repeating loops and cycles (life itself), and they did reprise the same cue, but it wasn't developed at all.

I'd rank the MCU movies more or less as:

>Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

>Iron Man 3

>Captain America: Civil War

>Guardians of the Galaxy

>Black Panther

>Avengers: Infinity War

>Doctor Strange

>Thor: Ragnorak

>The Avengers

>Iron Man

>Captain America: The Winter Soldier

>Avengers: Age of Ultron

>Spider-Man: Homecoming

>Ant-Man

>Thor

>Captain America: The First Avenger

>Iron Man 2

>Thor: The Dark World

>The Incredible Hulk

Infinity War was fascinating in finally legitimately abandoning any semblance of penetrability for newcomers. I respected that quite a bit. The MCU has reached the point where it can genuinely, not just in marketing-speak, release a film that is more sequel and prequel to other films than a standalone film of its own. That's not a criticism, I admire that they ditched doing the frustrating half-measure they usually do.

The near three hours flew by for me, the pace of action and new character interactions kept me entertained pretty consistently except for a slight lag in the middle where there was just so much plot to churn through. Avengers: Age of Ultron is a deeply flawed movie but Joss fought very hard for the relaxed, comfy farmhouse scenes of pure character interaction, and they played to everyone's strengths so well. The MCU is full of great actors with well-realised characters that are easy to invest in and enjoy, but it's also full of plots that don't serve them well, and continuity that actively degrades them.

Well Joss is long gone by now so there was no such characterkino in this film, and I think the writers/directors (same team from Winter Soldier and Civil War) got overwhelmed by the story demands here and failed to give most of the characters much of a reason to be there. I was surprised how well the Guardians were realised in the film (less surprised when I found out apparently Gunn literally rewrote all their lines), and enjoyed Doctor Strange in particular. I love what Downey Jr does with Iron Man but that character is so, so poorly served by the series at this point, it's genuinely amazing he manages to make the character work in spite of the incoherent writing he's served film after film.

I was greatly amused by Captain America's s i x l i n e s. Thanos had potential but was poorly utilised, what interesting stuff they could have done with contrasting his misguided utilitarianism with the human's Disneyesque idealism was undercut by the strength of the Guardian's characters (Star Lord demonstrating genuine love and respect for Gamora and recognition of her agency in attempting to kill her as asked kind of undoes any commentary the film could make on how Thanos follows through on pragmatism where no one else does. The ending did not work for me, it was too much of a "PART 1 OF 2" relic and emulated some of the worst aspects of comics, the complete disengagement with any effort to ground death or emotions realistically, instead completely undermining the concept of death for empty narrative spectacle, theatrics, shock factor. I was surprised how comparatively well-served Thor was by the movie. I'm interested to see how the sequel works, I'm guessing it will be a sort of tribute to the original (aka surviving) Avengers before bowing them out since most of their contracts are ending. I've seen the leaked set pics that point to some potentially interesting developments that hopefully reflect on the franchise in interesting ways.

The whole X is Y for Z thing often dips into that territory, they're as much Moffisms as 12isms. Pop culture makes me think of the Mario stuff in Extremis but I think that is more genuine attempt at an explanation than offhanded quip.

I can never forget~

Ah there you go. I expect Westworld S2 might have some evidence of The Return's influence too, but won't know until I watch it…probably sometime much later this year, months after its finished.

That makes sense. You are the hybrid. I'm pure Aussie going back quite a few generations myself.

Both of us pointedly not stating their specific crimes speaks volumes.

At least I won't get funny looks when I say "lift" like I do here.

>I meant that in the sense of "it is an active action, in contrast to the utter inaction he is requesting".

yeah but it doesn't come across that way imo. it's not phrased or delivered in the "don't even sneeze" sort of way, it comes across as 1.) selfies being an actual possibility in the setting, and 2.) an old guy yelling at youth culture in that embarrassing way that moffat revisits a lot

desu i hate hell bent's "man flu" line more

 No.21532

>>21531

Ah I understand what you mean, yeah I completely understand your take. I guess the real difference then is that 2 doesn't bother me where it does bother you.

The man flu line bothers me not in that its comic, but in being indicative of Moff's wishy-washy attitude to regeneration that I think occasionally dulls the impact of otherwise strong moments.

 No.21533

Although I can kinda see the man flu line working as showing how 12 is trying to downplay and dismiss death all throughout in the episode for obvious reasons…but at that point I worry if I'm having a Sandifer-esque "defend Moff past the point of your own taste/logic" lapse.
