Something is coming. In the meantime, here’s a recapzo.

2018.

10 epzodes.

13 hours.

17 voices.

Now edited together into an hour-long greatest hits compilation with a little something extra at the end.

The hopes. The fears. The incredibly offbase predictions. Relive the podcast’s first year as we prepare for its monumental Resolution.

>someone who hasn’t listened to the podcast before

Yeah for sure. A lot of things (the intros, Tomtit's epz9 parody, skit stuff in epz9 and epz10) are basically standalone from 'episode discussions'. This contains all the 'lore' of the podcast so there's no prerequisite for this.

>or watched series 11?

Less sure on that. A lot of the gag of this is the dramatic irony in what people predicted of episodes and the series before it all happened. And so much of what content is doing is riffing specifically on Series 11 and Chibnall's approach towards it. Stuff like the Heaven Sent conceit of epz10 I think could work without having seen Series 11, but I imagine a lot of the recap would be lost on someone who hasn't seen it.

Drives me wild because absolutely nothing would change if he was mid-twenties. There's plenty of people in their twenties like that.

Also, how the fuck is Yaz a cop at 19? That's more of a complaint about the police system than the show, because I'm sure that is possible but fuck. I've never thought about that before.

I was about to bring up Rose too. I hate that she's 19 and it's mostly easily forgotten, but there's at least moments where it feels like she's younger than she looks. Billie was stunt casting anyway so I get why they didn't get an actual ninteeen year old to play her, but there would be plenty of nineteen year olds that can act at least as well as Tosin and Mandip.

Not to get too serious, but I unironically think it's immoral to cast a twenty-something and thirty-something to play nineteen year olds. Growing up on media where teenagers look like grown adults would be such a breeding ground for body-image issues.

 No.215548

Sorry to hear that anon. Time can pass weirdly in those sorts of places/situations, I hate it when it's a stressful medical thing for someone else but it's just hours and hours of waiting around, it's unpleasant for everyone. Hope your friend/relative/person is alright and you have as nice a day as you can later.

=) Hope you enjoy it! There were so many very wrong predictions and hopes as the series was airing. I think it's nice to have all the stuff with the most rewatchability (the montages and skits and whatnot) collated together too.

>>215546

That makes sense. They should have just changed the damn ages…or not clarified them at all!

 No.215549

>>215547

I know some people think, like, that since the Doctor is super old that Rose's relative youth to him doesn't change whether she's 19 or 25 or 18 or whatever, but I disagree so much with that idea. 19 is an adult, yes, and there are plenty of very mature 19 year olds, but look at her. She'd be so much more emotionally equipped for a relationship with someone as traumatised and powerful as the Doctor even just with a few years more on her. It's creepy that she's an outright teenager.

I liked how Clara was treated and how the character visibly aged through her years. That was communicated really well through fashion (and performance too).

>Not to get too serious, but I unironically think it's immoral to cast a twenty-something and thirty-something to play nineteen year olds. Growing up on media where teenagers look like grown adults would be such a breeding ground for body-image issues.

Absolutely, absolutely. Teens are already going through so much crisis of body-image stuff, and media already pushes so many unrealistic standards, could we not give teens one little break in that area? I really believe a lot of the success of the Harry Potter films came from the visible ageing of the age-appropriate cast and how audiences could accurately see themselves in that.

3.2 Companion Piece by John Dorney

When the evil Time Lord known as the Nine comes across a rare and valuable item floating in the space-time vortex, his acquisitive nature means he can’t resist the urge to complete the set.

Soon a wicked scheme is underway. Only the Doctor’s friends – past, present and future – will be able to stop him.

But without the Doctor around will even the combined skills of Liv, Helen, River Song, Bliss and Charley be enough to save the day?

>>215551

This story looks like the definition of clickbait and Lucy's absence is very odd especially when Sheridan Smith is doing BF again. Ravenous is such an utter letdown. 8's current companions are such a letdown. 8 and River's stories 'together' are such a letdown. What's the bet 8 just shows up at the end? I think some people go a bit far with it, especially with Classic Who, but the "each Doctor is a reaction to the last Doctor" thing is outright codified in the text sometimes in RTD/Moff Who, for sure. I think I lose people a bit when I start arguing 10's accent is part of his remodelling himself for Rose, but the youth and handsomeness is undeniable, for sure. I mean New Earth is outright 10 and Rose assessing their bodies and what they mean for their relationship. A lot of stuff with 12 I think one can read as a reaction to The Time of the Doctor but much of it's subtextual to the point I think it was likely unintended (not that that's a knock against it exactly).

When I was much younger - Christ, very nearly ten years ago now - I tried getting a partner into Doctor Who as well. The only things she had positive engagement with were Series 1 and the TV movie. Any interesting observations from your partner's end?

I think mostly that's fan interpretation (which is valid) but yeah it definitely exists. Moffat even tried to set it up with Jodie, which is pretty bold when you think about it. Personally, I think what he did cheapens the first female Doctor though. The idea that the Doctor would change their body to appeal to Bill is a lot more uncomfortable than the same concept with Rose (an already dodgy concept).

Well we started with a cinema screening of The Woman Who Fell to Earth which, in hindsight, is a pretty big first step. We watched all of S11 together and then started at S1 and have almost made it to the end of S4. My partner likes it and our tastes roughly line up. The thing that surprises me the most is how much stronger their emotional reactions can be. It sounds cliche, but Rose's departure destroyed them. Like, to the point where we had to slow down our watchthrough and they took awhile to warm up to Martha.

The funnest part is trying to hide and control expectations. Utopia was a wild experience. I'd been looking forward to that since before we started our watchthrough and when it got to the end my heart was beating so fast it was like I was seeing it for the first time, I was that nervous and excited.

I don't read 12>13 as being that born of Bill apart from the general feminist slant of 12's, but basically any thoroughline I like was scuttered by TUAT not engaging with the oncoming transformation in that way or any way. I disagree with Moffat (and RTD) that a woman Doctor required 'setting up' but I do think the way Moffat went about it did give it a certain power and interesting inevitability. There's an effortlessness to it in Hell Bent particularly, between both Clara and the General.

Realistically I think what would have been most coherent after Moffat's S10 would have been a woman showrunner and a woman Doctor. Alas…

How did Utopia go? I assume they didn't know anything about the Master. The concept of another Time Lord still has weight either way. Do they draw much between S11 and RTD Who or more or less treat them as separate shows?

I remember the Daleks in the S1 finale terrified my gf back in the day. Although I think a lot of that comes down to the operation of the finale script more than a lot of specificity with the Daleks (though that is there too).

Is it enlivening your life in any way? Try writing a pros/cons list for the behaviour. I like some of Moffat's cross-gender regeneration setup - "Is the future all female?", "We can only hope" & "Or a queen", "Yeah that would be good too!" - but I nitpick a lot of it. In particular, I was referring to Bill's line to the Doctor about how she's attracted to people her gender and her age when he's mid-regeneration, heavily implying that's the body she wants him to take.

>a woman showrunner and a woman Doctor

If only.

The Utopia moment still held weight, but I was definitely more excited about it lol. One thing watching it with my partner made me realise is how well RTD placed a red herring in Utopia. There's a line earlier about how the futurekind is what humans are turning into, and because of that whenever Yana had his drumming moments my partner instinctively thought he was going through that transformation.

I'm really looking forward to Missy and eventually Simm's return. I think they'll be shocking. My partner knew some stuff in advance, like Rose coming back and getting a clone Doctor, and River being someone's kid (during The Silence in the Library they kept guessing she was the Doctor's kid which is funny but interesting that it's ambiguous enough that it doesn't instantly appear romantic to everybody), but effectively knows nothing about the Capaldi era at all.

>I remember the Daleks in the S1 finale terrified my gf back in the day

My partner said "OH FUCK OFF!" when the Daleks came out of the void ship in Army of Ghosts, which is frankly based. (It's because they hate their voices)

>lthough I think a lot of that comes down to the operation of the finale script

S1 still hasn't been surpassed in this way, the way so many episodes naturally leads into the finale. RTD's ability to build momentum heading into the finale in general is underappreciated, and it's something I've noticed a lot more in this watchthrough in contrast to Chibnall's abysmal finale. Turn Left is a great episode but it also creates so much energy leading into The Stolen Earth.

Oh also that should be fun. My partner has no idea when the Doctor's regenerate.

I never read that line of Bill's that way but I've seen enough multiple readings of it to hope that some ambiguity was intended. I took it as a dual reassertion that she was still her, not cybered, and also asserting how she'd treasured the relationship with 12 - he wasn't the type of person she thought she'd be great friends with but there they were.

I think a savvy TV watcher of today can flag that The Stolen Earth isn't really the end, although it was taken as that by a lot back in the day.

I think S8 is the only thing similar to S1 in the coherence of multiple very different scripts all folding into the same themes and throughlines. S9 has a lot of coherence too but in the opposite way, all loose and sprawling and zeroing in on examining traits rather than developing them like S8 did.

It disappoints me that all the feasible, and desirable, future showrunners I can think of are very cut from the same cloth. There aren't many prominent women genre showrunners and those that are around are quite busy with their own projects. There's always the possibility of relative unknowns but we can't really discuss what we don't know - or whom.

>I think a savvy TV watcher of today can flag that The Stolen Earth isn't really the end

I think that line becomes a bit blurred when streaming old episodes. I intentionally keep it ambiguous about where we're up to in the season or in the show as a whole. I do my best to keep things secret, and I plan out ways to prepare my partner for certain reveals. Like we've talked about watching the TV Movie but I think I'll decide it's time just before The Name of the Doctor, to give them some experience with older Doctors and so that McGann's minisode isn't meaningless.

No idea what I'm going to do for Twice Upon a Time. I feel like watching An Unearthly Child would just make it all the more jarring and disappointing.

I'm big into this too, although I've had issues in the past with going too far into the "I want to live through how you experience this, I want you to like this, be me!" shit so I basically just don't do it anymore. I don't really go beyond just recommending stuff to people rarely if it comes up, or if they outright ask for recs, anymore. I'm cringing remembering insisting certain Classic episodes should be watched before certain NewWho episodes. It sounds like a good system when your partner is into it like in your case though. It's a bit like when a Previously On flags something is returning though, if you rewatch something before a certain event/finale it does gesture at the game a bit.

Yeah I try not to push the show too much, especially when we were just starting. But my partner is genuinely into it and will recommend watching it just as often as I recommend it, when we're looking for something to watch. They've also been upfront about not being interested in the spin-offs or the classic series (although is happy to hear me point out when things in the new series are references) which is fine, I don't expect them to like the show as much as me. That would be extremely unreasonable.

>It's a bit like when a Previously On flags something is returning though, if you rewatch something before a certain event/finale it does gesture at the game a bit.

Yeah, I'm yet to pull this stunt though so it won't be obvious, especially since I've talked about watching the TV movie for so long now. I don't actually expect McGann to hold much weight anyway, but if we're going to watch the TV movie at some point, before Name of the Doctor seems like the best time.

Tumblr has shown me the legions of fans who will adamantly attack Moffat on every vector, but outside of those bubbles they're rather categorically dismissed or ignored. Certainly no one at Gally One, for instance, would label them a serious threat. Why isn't series 11 apathy being met with the same approach? Is it because it's grounded in more legitimate critiques? Or because, thanks to the 13 casting, it was tied to the culture war from the start?

Alternately I just wasn't around to watch the peak of Moffat hate during series 5, in which case we're all trapped in a historical cycle and should buckle up for the next 8 years.

>LKH airs and it seems like Moffat deliberately had the Doctor mysteriously off-screen for "23 minutes" while he was dying from the poison because it's too specific of a number to not be important

>tfw Wedding of River Song aired and it was all for nothing

>guy behind the shed is never explained

>all that time I spent arguing with people on proto-/who/ who thought that there wasn't a person there even though there clearly was, all for nothing

>the "23 minutes" is never brought up again

>the answer to the Astronaut mystery and how the Doctor faked his death were the two most obvious ones

>to top it all off the episode ended with the fucking "DOC. TOR. WHO!' scene

and then Moffat pulled the same shit with The Reichenbach Fall in Sherlock. At least Series 6 gave us answers at the end, as shitty and obvious as those answers were. oh yeah I forgot about the Duck Pond. And there was also Rory's id badge in The Eleventh Hour having a date of birth that would've made him way older than he looked fueled a lot of the "Rory is the Master/Rani/Omega" theories. I remember thinking River being the astronaut was too obvious and that it had to be a red herring, and that Rory would end up being in the suit. River would to kill him to save the Doctor, meaning that the "good man, the best I ever knew" she killed wasn't the Doctor, but her father. "A Good Man Goes to War" as a title could just as easily have applied to Rory than Eleven.

There were also the Omega symbol badges on the Church soldiers and on their flags in AGMGTW which just ended up being a coincidence I guess.

I'm too lazy to do it but I bet if you went in the archive to the threads after Let's Kill Hitler you'll be able to find the infographic someone made to explain how the 23 years thing would explain the Doctor faking his death. It was absurdly complicated, like it looked like those Primer timeline graphs.

It's been a while, but I believe the 23 minutes thing does play into his death. Either it happens 23 minutes into The Impossible Astronaut, or it happens 23 minutes after they arrive at Lake Silencio.

The 23 minutes thing from LKH is a trademark example of people missing the forest for the trees.

>But they specified "23 minutes" so many times, it must be a clue!

No, the repetition was a comedic beat about the Doctor struggling to communicate with the TARDIS interface.

>But he came back and he was wearing different clothes!

Yes, which was a gag about the Doctor being an eccentric show-off.

Moffat honestly fucked up by training viewers to hunt for clues with S5/S6A, because it led to them frequently not understanding what the hell was even going on in basic scenes.

Moff and Gatiss decided not to dwell on the "how" because there was no way to please everyone. Sherlocks explanation to Anderson uses everything from the episode, the squash ball, the homeless network, etc. And even that wasn't satisfying to people despite it being the intended explanation.

They weren't interested in how Sherlock survived because as they showed, they could write several explanations, of course he's alive, that's the easy part. They were more interested in what happened when he came back.

Obviously this contrasted with what the audience was interested in

PALTRAKI: What about that creature?

ANDINIO: We sealed the building as we left. No one can get to him.

DOCTOR: I'm sorry for the way he betrayed you. We can take these people home. Save you the job.

PALTRAKI: No. I'm going to complete my mission.

DELPH: Then take us too.

ANDINIO: Delph, this is our home. We must stay here.

DELPH: No. We need to understand what's out there. Find another home.

PALTRAKI: You'll have to sleep on the floor.

DELPH: I walked this planet for decades. Floors are fine.

ANDINIO: Where will you go now?

DOCTOR: No idea. Come on, fam.

RYAN: I thought we weren't doing fam.

YASMIN: I like it.

DOCTOR: None of us know for sure what's out there. That's why we keep looking. Keep your faith. Travel hopefully. The universe'll surprise you… constantly.

 No.216096

DOCTOR: Cables, in the portal. Big thick ones. Drag them out. You and Andinio loop them into the systems. Very fast. If I can extend the dematerialisation field by three metres then split the field. Must be able to split the field. They're only tiny and I'm clever. Oi, Ux! Get in here! I know this will be way beyond your comprehension.

DELPH: Dimensionally transcendental?

DOCTOR: Now, get the cables with Yaz, and lock them into the systems. Delph, come here.

YASMIN: What are you going to do?

DOCTOR: Telepathic circuits. If it can work for your Nani's watch, it can work for that clever lad. You brought all these things here. You have all the coordinates in your head. The fastest way is to read what's in your mind and send them back, fast, but keeping us here. Their knowledge, their abilities, Tim Shaw's tech, our blue box. We're going to lash together every resource we've got. Sort of like a supergroup. Best elements of everyone. Clear?

YASMIN: Not in the least.

DOCTOR: Too much to do, not enough time. Oh no, that's bad. The mass is returning. I can't lift it any more. But the planets need to be returned to the exact place in the universe where they came from. Can you do it? Can you return them?

DELPH: It's possible.

ANDINIO: It would take time.

DOCTOR: Which we don't have. Argh, my brain. It's getting fuzzy. How do we do this? What have we got left? Oh. One possibility. You two, this set-up, us. What else? Oh! Aligned to Stenza power, enough for a short-range whistle. Might work. Please work. Universe, provide for me. I'm working really hard to keep you together right now.

DOCTOR: Hi.

DOCTOR: I'm no one, but I have something you might be interested in.

ANDINIO: Where is the object?

DOCTOR: I never talk in the face of a gun. Point of principle. Please put it down. Going to be like that, is it? Fine. I've attached a couple of explosive devices to your object here on my back. So, shoot, and you jeopardise whatever this thing is. And what is it? Come on, share with the class.

ANDINIO: Where is Paltraki?

DOCTOR: I'm not answering your questions if you don't answer mine. Are his other two crew members still alive?

ANDINIO: Yes.

DOCTOR: See? That wasn't so hard. And good, thank you. Why didn't you stop that woman from being killed? What's your name?

ANDINIO: I am Andinio of the Ux.

DOCTOR: You're kidding. The Ux? As in the duo-species, only ever two of you? Lifespans of millennia? Only found on three planets in the whole universe? I've never met an Ux. Congratulations. It must be so cool. Wait, there's something else. Oh, I can't remember. What happened here, Andinio? Make sense of it for me. The battle zone outside?

ANDINIO: They came for the Creator. We defended him.

DOCTOR: Oh! I've remembered. Wait. Is this yours, this building? Is it true about the Ux? Faith-driven dimensional engineers.
