I wonder what the thought processes were behind each title sequence…

1963-1966:

Technical: So if you point a camera down its own lens, it creates a psychedelic abstract effect.

Showrunner: Ooo that sounds cool and mysterious! Let's use it!

1966-1969:

Technical: Okay so I'm adding Patrick Troughton's face to the titles, is that okay?

Showrunner: What? No! That'll traumatise the kids!

Technical: Okay thanks!

Showrunner: Wait! Oh well, maybe it'll be temporary… right?

1970-1973:

Showrunner: So the face thing surprisingly worked so let's do it again with Jon Pertwee.

Technical: Good news! Doctor Who's gonna be in colour!

Showrunner: Really?! Then use ALL THE COLOURS!

1973-1974:

Showrunner: So I want you to change the title sequence again even though we've got Jon Pertwee for one more season, any ideas?

Technical: Why don't we just throw him down the time vortex?

Showrunner: Brilliant! That won't look weird in the slightest!

1974-1980:

Showrunner: Okay so we have a new Doctor, shall we do the time vortex thingy again?

Technical: Okay but we're not throwing Tom Baker down it again. It looked weird with Pertwee. Can I use the TARDIS instead.

Showrunner: That sounds good! But we need a picture of Tom…

Technical: I've got one here. Shows the Tom Baker picture

Showrunner: Bloody hell! He looks terrified! Let's use it!

1980-1981:

Showrunner: Okay so people are getting sick of this title sequence. Have you got any ideas?

Technical: I've got a starfield for you. Makes it look nice and space-y

Showrunner: Awesome! And the face?

Technical: Shows Tom Baker's face

Showrunner: What on earth is that face?

Technical: Well I tried surprising him so he doesn't get camera shy. It didn't go over very well…

Showrunner: That explains the black eye. Oh well, just use it anyway!

 No.221472

1981-1984:

Showrunner: Okay so the starfield works but can you make the Doctor look less weird?

Technical: Way ahead of you. Shows Peter Davison's face

Showrunner: Oh for goodness sake… why does he look like he's undressing me with his eyes?!

Technical: I don't know… I told him to look kind and mysterious and this is what he came up with.

Showrunner: Fine, at least it looks less weird than Tom's…

1984-1985:

Showrunner: Okay so we need to spice up the titles as people are getting bored of the starfield.

Technical: NEON!

Showrunner: No… we need to do more than that. What with a new Doctor and all…

Technical: NEON!

Showrunner: Okay, okay! We'll add neon to the starfield… yeesh!

1986:

Showrunner: You did what?!

Technical: I changed the theme. People were getting sick of Howell's theme anyway.

Showrunner: Let me have a listen. Listens to Dominic Glynn's awesome rendition of the Doctor Who theme Okay fine… use it.

1987-1989:

Showrunner: So computer-generated imagery is now a thing so let's use it for McCoy's title sequence! It'll look revolutionary.

Technical: But it hasn't been perfected yet… won't it look dated in a few years' time?

Showrunner: Nah it'll look awesome! Use it!

1996:

Showrunner: Hey so Doctor Who's back and we need a new title sequence. I'm thinking of using CGI again-

Technical: Nope!

Showrunner: Come on it'll look cool!

Technical: McCoy's title sequence hasn't aged well at all!

Showrunner: But CGI's better now!

Technical: Okay fine but I'm just doing the time vortex again. Doing a galaxy was hard.

Showrunner: Okay but we're ditching the face. We're using their names instead.

Technical: Won't people miss it?

Showrunner: Nah, I'm sure this won't be alienating.

 No.221473

2005:

Showrunner: So Doctor Who's back… again. What have you got for me this time?

Technical: Well McGann's title sequence seemed to work so I want you to do that again but this time have two time vortexes instead of one.

Showrunner: Seems a bit lazy but alright, you're the boss.

2006-2007:

Showrunner: Well Christopher Eccleston left earlier than I expected, have you got a new title sequence for David Tennant.

Technical: Err… Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V Here you go.

Showrunner: …it's the exact same title sequence…

Technical: I know.

Showrunner: …let's use it

2007-2010

Showrunner: What do you mean Murray Gold has composed a new theme?

Technical: That's what he told me!

Showrunner: Why didn't he give us that before?

Technical: I don't know what goes through a composers head!

Showrunner: Fine. He's lucky it sounds better than the other one…

2010-2011:

Showrunner: Okay so we have a new Doctor, a new TARDIS, new companions and a new sonic screwdriver. Please tell me you have a new title sequence!

Technical: Shows him the new titles

Showrunner: But… it's just the same titles again but it's with clouds and lightning!

Technical: I know.

Showrunner: Eh, close enough.

2012:

Showrunner: What have you done…?

Technical: You wanted each episode to feel like a movie so I changed the titles for each episode

Showrunner: But it looks hideous! The colour correction feels tacky! The font has been downgraded! And what is up with those gimmicky logos?!

Technical: Sorry, sir.

2012-2013:

Showrunner: Okay, please tell me you have something different.

Technical: Well we had to rush it given our short deadline but here we go. Shows title sequence

Showrunner: Yikes the CGI is sloppy, especially on the TARDIS! But still… we have the Doctor's face back…

Technical: Sorry sir, I'll refine it.

Showrunner: No keep it! It's better than that drivel we got with series 7, part 1. At least it's different and at least we have Matt's beautiful face…

Technical: Sir?

Showrunner: Away with you!

2014-2017:

Showrunner: So what have you got?

Technical: So that Billy Hanshaw guy gave us permission to rework his fan title sequence. Here's what we came up with. Shows title sequence

Showrunner: Wow that's brilliant! Can I make a few changes though?

Technical: What changes…?

Showrunner: I want to add an annoying ring when the TARDIS comes out of the time vortex!

Technical: Okay…

Showrunner: And I want to make the cogs blue for series 9!

Technical: What's the point of making a change that late?

Showrunner: And for some episodes, I want the theme to be completely out of sync with the titles.

Technical: But won't that drive fans mad?

Showrunner: Thank you, that'll be all!

Technical: But- Oh forget it.

2018-present day:

Showrunner: So one fan managed to make a great title sequence. Let's get another in, I hear that John Smith VFX is the bee's knees.

Technical: Oh I like him! What's he done.

Showrunner: He splattered purple paint all over the screen.

Technical: Okay…

Showrunner: Trust me, it's gonna look awesome.

Technical: Fine…

Showrunner: Oh and get Segun Akinola to bring his drumkit. I have a great idea for the theme!

Technical: Whatever you say sir… whatever you say…

I've been looking at the transcript site and reliving the 50th and why it was the peak of NewWho from which it could only go down.

>GENERAL: It's delusional. The calculations alone would take hundreds of years.

>DOCTOR: Oh, hundreds and hundreds.

>DOCTOR 10: But don't worry, I started a very long time ago.

>DOCTOR 1: Calling the War Council of Gallifrey. This is the Doctor.

>DOCTOR: You might say I've been doing this all my lives.

I remember my reaction to this quite vividly. "Omg omg omg!" with my heart rate spiking.

And then the next bit.

>GENERAL: I didn't know when I was well off. All twelve of them!

>ANDROGAR: No, sir. All thirteen!

>(A new pair of grey eyebrows is seen.)

I squealed. Also, that was when I knew that Capaldi was going to be awesome. While Series 10 was pretty good, no moment in Capaldi's era came close to capturing the glory that was this scene. The first half of Hell Bent and World Enough and Time got close, but no cigar.

>As for Luke never being given the opportunity to reunite with Han, he added: "I just thought, Luke’s never going to see his best friend again. You look at it in a self-centred way. I said that it was a big mistake that those three people would never reunite in any way. I guess I was wrong, because nobody seems to care."

They did a proof of concept animation to show off the animation they'd do for The Macra Terror. It needs a visual element for a fair few important scenes. The recon I watched had the remaining clips put into it and out of the 90 or so minutes (I had always thought it was a 6-parter instead of a 4-parter) about 1 minute of footage remained. It's quite baffling that they chose this mediocre story to animate instead of something like The Wheel in Space, EVIL!!!!! or literally anything else.

Inward-looking, her role as an amnesic heroine is in a systematic mistrust and distrust, in a world of men, where she will quickly make it clear to these gentlemen that she does not need a guide. >Superheroes save the world on a regular basis, but their movies aren’t nearly as courageous: For every ingenious Black Panther that departs from the billion-dollar formula, you get ten timid time-wasters. Captain Marvel, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first female-led installment, means a lot symbolically—especially to young girls who resonate with Gal Gadot’s confident portrayal of Wonder Woman. But you can’t help but wish the watershed moment arrived with a more richly imagined central character. Even within the MCU itself, you can locate fiercer, more complex women (Elizabeth Olsen’s tortured Scarlet Witch comes to mind), and while Room and Short Term 12 star Brie Larson is certainly capable of expressing wire-taut uncertainty, she’s a bit stranded in the rubber suit, playing a role that gives her scant opportunity to be human. It seems beneath her.

A basically all-black cast in a very expensive blockbuster fantasy/sci-fi genre film that isn't about slavery/poverty/etc is absolutely novel and a break from Hollywood formula. You can't discount the casting of the movie as if it's some interchangeable thing. It absolutely broke from the billion dollar formula of how these movies are made, which is not comprised just of plot skeletons, but also of casting decisions (look how similarly the MCU men alone are cast). The way Captain Marvel was advertised was trying to catch some of the vein of that spirit but in terms of having a woman lead, but obviously that broke down for several reasons (even apart from the film apparently being nothing more than lip service, it's still very heavily advertised with the co-lead of Samuel L Jackson, the villains are men, etc.).

The "formula" Hollywood use to make films is not just a script outline or proven plot beats, it absolutely is casting, positioning, etc as well.

compare to earlier films where score would have multiple times to shine in a movie. hell look at star wars itself, like the binary sunset scene. can you imagine an MCU movie stopping and pausing on a shot for 30 seconds just to let the composer do their thing?

>Beyond the inferences of its opening scene, and a handful of cheeky moments sprinkled throughout (one of the villains basically stands over Carol and demands that she debate him), “Captain Marvel” doesn’t foreground its gender politics. Unlike “Wonder Woman,” the film offers few plot-specific reasons to call attention to who she is under the spandex. That’s a blessing and a curse in a familiar story that leaves you desperate to see Carol offer the movie, its genre, and her impressionable young fanbase something more than a cosmetic overhaul. Itcould have been “Alien3” or “Princess Mononoke” or “Tank Girl” — hell, it could have been “Batman Returns.” But only in its most regressive ways does it really feel like a blockbuster from the mid-’90s. Neither a blast from the past, nor an inspiring glimpse into the future, at the end of the day it’s just another Marvel movie. And not a particularly good one, at that.

They have similar aggregator scores. I wouldn't say there's that big of a difference honestly, Captain Marvel just has a couple more people who are willing to outright say "this blows" while still being drowned out by the positivity. Series 11 had a couple of people who dared to raise points like "the Doctor is devoid of inner conflict" and a couple of ep reviews that outright trashed it, but that was it really.

Iger being very verged and wanting to wash his hands of the current power structure over there buzzes out all the time, but the idea she wasn't gonna get her contract renewed pre ep9 was always absolutely ridiculous not only for the optics, or the fact literally nobody else would want the job of covering the last film of that era, but because Disney need to keep the stock as stable as possible for the Fox merger to literally go through at all, it's partially contigent on that, and the head of Lucasfilm leaving would absolutely affect the stock.
