>Hi reddit. I'm using a throwaway cause my bf knows my main account.

>Let me start off my saying we've been in a loving relationship for a year now. We care for each other, we support each other, and we trust each other, or so I thought until earlier today.

>We've been living together for a few months now and everything has been smooth sailing. I love living with him and spending time together. In my opinion, we work perfectly. We even divided tasks the other hates doing, for example he takes out the trash and I do the dishes, I clean the floors and he does the cooking.

>He is an amazing chef, which is where this situation stems from originally: every dish he cooks is the best version I've had of it. He makes the best fries, the best pasta, the best pies, etc.. I've asked him since day one what he does to cook this well, and he always replies he just cooks with love.

>Now to the problem: since last week, every meal he's cooked has made me feel light-headed. I attributed this to my low pressure at first, but with every passing day I felt worse. Coincidentally, we had had has a big fight earlier that week, but we solved everything imo. Last Wednesday I went to a fast food place instead of eating at home to test if my bf's cooking was making me sick or if it was just my shit body being shit, but nope, I felt completely fine.

>A couple hours ago we were having pasta when my face and fingers started feeling very tingly, and my head started aching a lot. He noticed I was hesitant to keep on eating so he asked me if anything was wrong, I outright asked him if he'd put anything in the food and he looked at me straight in the eye and said "love." I stopped eating claiming my stomach hurt, and left for a walk. I'm currently sitting at a diner typing this up and having actual dinner. He's blowing up my phone with texts.

>What should I do? I'm obviously wrong about the poisoning, right? Who'd even so such a thing? Poison doesn't make food taste good does it?

>Apologies for any typos, my thumbs are fat and my phone small.

>tl;dr: I'm worried my bf is poisoning me because every time I eat his cooking I feel very sick, and he will not tell me what he's cooking with.

The mere act of you doing any of this is very enlivening and a good show of the self-directed motivation, pro-sharing ideal ideals of the web imo.

I mean, how many new visitors do we ever get around here anymore? I'm sure the anons who are regulars wouldn't have a problem using a username given the circumstances. And honestly /who/'s fate was sealed when we got banned from /tv/. Moving here might've worked out better for us and I think most people (myself included) like being here way more than being on /tv/, but we're just as self-contained and "in a bubble" here than we would be on that site. for the curious the idea was about a monster that would take away the Doctor/companion's ability to speak and they'd have to spend the entire episode unable to talk and trying to communicate through other means while figuring out what the fuck is going on. The title I came up with is Hush.

although the idea I came up with for the main story is different enough. It was gonna be the companion telling the Doctor about an old aunt she had that died when she was young and was a mute ever since she was a child, and her convincing the Doctor to go back to when the aunt was a kid and find out what it was that made her stop speaking. It'd just be the two of them and the young girl alone in the creepy house (parents are out or something) and the villains wouldn't ever be seen or heard (kinda like Listen I guess). Another title I came up with was "Speak No Evil" which I guess I could use to distance it from the Buffy ep more. I just liked the title "Hush" better because of the single-word-title-means-kino "rule" for nuWho

>S3 is my favourite series of Sherlock

really? More than Series 2? Series 2 has 1 perfect episode (Scandal in Belgravia) 1 great episode (Reichenbach) and one /GatissComfykino/ ep (Hounds of Baskerville). For Series 3, I remember definitely not liking the premiere at all, thinking the wedding episode was fun but nothing special, and thinking the finale was good even though the last 2 minutes were nonsense. S1 I like the pilot a lot and I liked the finale (especially those last 10 minutes) a lot but most of that episode and all of the 2nd episode suffered from bad pacing and not having enough story to fill the 90 minute runtimes.

I think they could've benefited a lot from being more flexible with the episode lengths. Certain eps like the pilot/Belgravia/Reichenbach don't have a dull moment because the plot justifies the runtime. The Blind Baker is genuinely one of the most boring episodes of television I've ever watched, I don't even think there's 45 minutes of story in that one. But Baskerville and other eps could easily be just 60 minutes or 75 and have it work to their benefit.

Yeah, for me The Empty Hearse and Sign of Three are really confidently executed characterkino, with all the best human qualities of Moff's sitcoms. They're both genuinely funny too. And His Last Vow is right up there with the absolute best of Moffat's career, its the real reason S3 is my favourite.

As for Series 2, yeah Scandal is amazing and another god-tier Moff, but Hounds, while not bad, is too predictable and "trad" for me. I don't think its Gatiss's best or even second-best script for the show. Reichenbach is gripping but I think the pomp and circumstance surrounding it made it overhyped, its basically event television for event television's sake and there's really not a huge amount of substance behind it, all the interesting stuff came from the fallout in S3.

 No.227413

The way series 3 fleshed out the mind palace idea/visualisation made it top tier for me. I think part of what made s4 so shit was self-indulgence with the visual effects (eg Mary jumping in front of the slowmo bullet) but s3 was still innovating the core design in interesting ways. Dumb criterion in comparison to plots etc but it's part of what makes Sherlock Sherlock

It would've been cheap. The direction they actually went in was possibly worse than just having him actually come back from the dead though, it was a total half-measure. They tried to have it both ways, the drama of him being dead plus the drama of him playing a part in the narrative. But both those things negate each other so its actually completely dramatically neutral and none of the protagonists have to actually go thru any arc in regards to Moriarty. Mofftiss legitimately fucked up and I hope Sherlock can come back in some form purely so they have a chance to redeem themselves like I know they can.

the Moriarty reveal in S1 was so fucking perfect. It was one of the few times a "character is revealed as the villain" has genuinely been unexpected/surprising as well as satisfying afterwards. It's easy to do something like idk Darth Jar Jar for the shock value, but after that wears off no one will give a fuck about him as a villain. And vice-versa, it's one thing to make a great villain character, but it's hard to make it so the audience doesn't immediately go "he's actually the villain". The Moriarty scene at the end with the earlier "Jim" scene misdirect was pulled off brilliantly by Moff.

That and the "I AM [S][H][E][R] LOCKED" moment in Belgravia were two of those moments where I was just like "oh god dammit why the fuck didn't I think of that?" That blend of incredibly obvious and incredibly clever that only Moffat can do.

you mean this?

https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsLeaks/comments/b0ytaw/star_wars_episode_ix_title_alleged_marketing_leak/

it's obviously fake, there are tons of comments pointing out the different errors/inaccuracies, they didn't do a very good job lol. Plus why would they need to put together a style guide for the title to send to vendors this far in advance? they're not gonna announce the title until Celebration in April. Vendors won't need this type of info until late-October at the earliest.

It's also too stupid of a title to be real anyway. If they were going to do a variation on "A New Hope" because georgelucaspoetry.mp4 it would be something like "A Last Hope". "An Only Hope" sounds wrong if you say it out loud, like those words aren't meant to ever be arranged together.

Audio dramas are stories. They aren't lectures or video essays. You are literally mathematically eliminating nuances of the performance and music when you speed them up. That is actually what is happening in terms of the audio manipulation. Yes you can still hear the words and follow along but you are denigrating the designed creative experience (as shit as it usually is, being Big Finish) and having a lesser experience than everyone who listens normally.

To do that you honestly have to go back and fix S5 by having Mels cameo. And the ending needs to be more downbeat since it essentially represents Amy finally losing the battle to raise her own child.

I watched the whole thing. He definitely starts out as an asshole, deliberately mistreating others in an edgy "life is pointless anyway" style that's all too familiar online. But then over the six episodes he's shown the error of his ways, realizes that treating others like shit isn't worth it, realizes life is worth living to benefit others and that makes it fulfilling, etc etc etc. It's only politically incorrect in that some jokes are offensive, not that it actually complains about political correctness (iirc). The only mildly "strawmen BTFO" bits are atheist vs believer bits.

desu before I read the reviews I thought it was a good self-reflection on Gervais' part. He actually reused some of his early jokes in the "asshole" episodes, so the later transformation seemed to me to be Gervais' repudiation of his earlier attitudes. We'll see if he actually follows up on that, though. The vicious reviews have made entirely understandable and sympathizable points, though.

I also really appreciate shows with <30min episodes, so there's that.

do you ever just think about how blessed we were to get 12 years straight of RTDkino and Moffkino? how even when it seemed like the quality was going downhill (Series 2, first halves of Series 3 & 4, end of Series 6, Series 7A/7B) they'd still pull right back up again and the quality would be higher than ever before (second halves of Series 3 & 4, everything after 7B). How Day of the Doctor somehow not only lived up to expectations, but knocked it out of the fucking park. That Peter Capaldi was actually cast as the Doctor, and he was the GOAT. And even at the end of his era Moff was still delivering some of his best stuff with Missy's arc in S10, bringing back the Mondasian Cybermen, a multi-Doctor special with 12 and 1, and finally giving us a multi-Master episode in that god-tier finale.

A discrete block of time with a beginning and end, rather that something that's constantly ambling into the future and not quite being what you expected. The sheer ambition and quality of what both showrunners were doing is frankly immense.

Run, tiny creature. It will make no difference now. The weapon is activated, Doctor. The Stenza held people in stasis as trophies, but that was never the goal. Our ultimate goal was to hold civilisations. They never found the way, but I have. You gave me my destiny.

 No.227855

In Extremis, the Monks have this incredibly advanced program that they presumably invented themselves as a tool to help them invade planets and take over civilisations. They study a race of beings and their society and fabricate a complex simulation that they can study and foolproof and eventually invade when they have a perfect copy. They can determine who Bill’s girlfriend was going to be, they can build simulations of top secret locations like the Haereticum, and they can’t foolproof the sonic sunglasses because it isn’t human technology and the simulation isn’t calibrated to it.

When the Doctor and Bill go through one of the central portals, they arrive in the Oval Office in the White House. Looking up from a pot of spilt pills on the floor, they see a figure facing towards the window, dead. He had committed suicide after reading the Veritas and figuring out the truth of the simulated world. We can’t see his face, but we can tell that he has grey hair and is a man, and both the Doctor and Bill deduce that he must be the President of the United States of America. In 2009’s The End of Time, we see President Obama himself give a speech. 2 episodes after Extremis and chronologically 6 months later, an image of Donald Trump can be seen in the Pyramid of the Monks, signifying an important person. In the image, Trump looks as he did when he was running for the real life 2016 election. Trump wasn’t all too prolific before his controversial decision to run, so he must’ve at least began his campaign in the simulation to make him worthy of massive recognition. In Arachnids in the UK, Jack Robertson admits he wants to run for President because he has ‘hated Trump for years’, implying he is still alive and currently the President as of 2018. This begs the question: who was the man in the Oval Office? He was almost certainly the President, as confirmed by the show itself, but if Obama was President in 2009 and Trump was President in 2018, surely the simulation would match real world events? Well, given that the Extremis President isn’t Trump, the simulation must’ve ended before the election results were released to the public. Trump didn’t win in the simulation, because he has blonde hair and the man in the Oval Office had grey hair.

Triangulating this information with Doctor Who canon and a comprehensive Wikipedia listing of candidates for the 2016 US election, we can only deduce that - despite their access to technology seemingly unparalleled in predicting and simulating the actions of the human race - the Monks thought that Gary Johnson of the Libertarian Party would win the election, making them the worst Doctor Who villains and tonight’s biggest losers.

i feel this so deeply. it hurts my soul that i can't articulate how inventive who always was, and i didn't really notice until i saw a truly bad attempt at it in series 11. i can attempt to express it here and people will understand, but there's way too much of a barrier to communicate it to someone who likes the chibnall era and can't see the difference between s11 and when doctor who was last good in their eyes. these people will point to any other time doctor who was 'ruined forever', but however bad i've felt the show has been before i've never been so fucking down about it and it's always at least had the spark i loved it for.

look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSNJRQPlE60

there's just no framework in series 11 that could allow for a scene as effective as this. the sheer drama of the whole thing, murray gold's score as the doctor pleads with the master, three series worth of setting up for something like this. RTD will never get enough credit - remember he and his production team conjured all of this up from their own ingenuity because no-one had ever seen doctor who like this before.

 No.227922

They literally called the scene frippery. They were never going to cover it.

its very easy to forget this

 No.227925

>>227923

i know people on /who/ understand, it's just other fans. most of the fandom loves RTD, but anyone calling the chibnall era a return to form surely can't actually realise what makes RTD great. absolutely different leagues, but people reduce it to 'RTD/chibnall are simple and fun while moffat is complicated and up-its-own-arse'. it's insulting to both RTD and moffat's work.

 No.227926

>>227924

yeah, it was a brand new show! it's not like 'time travelling alien who saves people with his companion' is all there is to it - RTD had to build an entirely new show, and they hit it out of the park immediately. immensely strong vision. very easy to take it for granted now but series 1 isn't just another series, i hold it to an entirely different standard because of what it had to set up. that does go for any show really.

The thing that hammered this home for me was when I read some quote where Russell was still considering 25 minute episodes (but like 2 parters) and it just hit me that the whole format - all of it - was Rusty and Julie Gardner's creation

 No.227928

>>227925

Russell took massive risks as well. In the commentary for Rose he talks about the risks he took making "The End of the World" with all the weird aliens etc…. there was no guarantee a normie 2005 audience would give that a second look. Even the finale involving Big Brother etc was a bizarre thing to do, and a risk.

Chib wouldn't know risk if someone held a [redacted] to his head

The 45min format was made in Colin's era

 No.227931

Yeah but New Who nearly wasn't written in 45 min format. I had always taken that for granted because of Buffy, but IIRC, RTD was pro 25 mins, but the BBC wanted 45 mins format. I'm aware it was done before, but I had taken it for granted that 21st Century Who was 45 min format

You’re reading into it too much. BBC gave them limited budget and time (likely due in part to the fact they wanted to limit costs since it wasn’t going to sell much in the first place) so they had to cut corners. There might’ve been some personal bias in picking which parts got cut, but something was going to get cut regardless.

I remember seeing a reddit thing about someone saying his granddad understood Doctor Who finally, but weirdly enough I keep forgetting what happens and getting confused. I just cant pay attention at all I guess. Maybe I have such a short attention span I need ADHD Moff writing to keep me engaged, but because I'm not engaged with chib's era, I miss stuff, so I'm constantly like, "What's that person doing there all of a sudden?"
