Yeah I'm not really clear on what Big Finish thinks they're doing with the range. Juliet Landau's Romana III was great and new and innovative, so of course they immediately undid the regeneration so Ward could stay on. They never even followed up with the Braxiatel Watchmaker cliffhanger at the end of "Enemy Lines".

I guess the reality is that Big Finish is only interested in making NuWho spinoffs, and rushing the Time War into all their Classic stuff is an easy way to do that. But even with that in mind, why on earth did they jettison all their most interesting characters in the first volume?

Here's hoping we'll see a dramatic return for Leela/Brax/Ace/Master in Vol3.

They title each person's article after the name they've been most credited as, then list their other names in the first paragraph in bold. Eg https://tardis.fandom.com/wiki/Jenna_Coleman and https://tardis.fandom.com/wiki/Stephen_Cole (though the latter doesn't quite count). See https://tardis.fandom.com/wiki/Talk:Jenny_Colgan for an example of the analysis that goes into those determinations. Each story page then refers to that person using the name they were credited as for that story.

The admins already took a good first step a long time ago in that they proactively change each trans castmember's article title to their new name, even if they've never been credited that way. Eg https://tardis.fandom.com/wiki/Lilah_Sturges. Unfortunately, with the admins the way they are, just the very act of not bolding the deadname on a person's article required a major battle behind the scenes. The best-case scenario, in my eyes, would be a page like [[A Fairytale Life (comic story)]] crediting the author using their proper name (in this case, [[Lilah Sturges]]) but then leaving a footnote saying they weren't originally credited under that name. That leaves it ambiguous, doesn't necessarily out them as trans, and doesn't include the deadname. But that'd be a pain in the ass to argue into law.

 No.228771

>>228770

I do genuinely believe that the admins don't think of themselves as problematic. They're not doing these things because they have any sort of agenda, they're doing these things because they haven't been informed why certain things are right in certain situations. Most of the admins are from newly-developed countries (not that that's much of an excuse, when you have an internet connection), and when called out and explained why their actions are wrong (which unfortunately falls on the head of the trans admin, requiring a considerable amount of patience on their part) they're usually willing to change their ways … eventually. Eg the article on the n-word, which was defended by the big boy in charge for years (he has a major problem with admitting he's wrong about anything) but was eventually censored by him.

The only admin I know who's blatantly a shitlord is Shambala108, who would never say it out loud but has repeatedly taken actions to undermine the trans admin's attempts to implement the singular "they" as a gender neutral pronoun for the Doctor. But everyone knows Shambala108 has been a problem forever, she refuses to participate in the admin Slack, she openly power trips all over the place, she once banned someone for not calling her by her full username. I don't know why they haven't booted her yet.

The Rings of Akhaten is loaded with interesting ideas, and 11's speech isn't just some meme speech notable just for dramatic factor or continuity references, no, it's of vital thematic significance to the episode (as is Clara's fwiw). The episode takes place in a society in a thrall of a god deceiving them as to his, and by extension their, true nature. A god of deception, dogma, gaslighting. Like any dogmatic theocracy he sees the tangible reality of the society denied in favour of his false vision of it that grants him domination.

>DOCTOR: No, we didn't wake him. And you didn't wake him, either. He's waking because it's his time to wake, and feed. On you, apparently. On your stories.

>CLARA: She didn't say stories. She said souls.

>DOCTOR: Same thing. The soul's made of stories, not atoms. Everything that ever happened to us. People we love, people we lost. People we found again against all the odds. He threatens to wake, they offer him a pure soul. The soul of the Queen of Years.

>CLARA: Stop it. You're scaring her.

>DOCTOR: Good. She should be scared. She's sacrificing herself. She should know what that means. Do you know what it means, Merry?

>MERRY: A god chose me.

>DOCTOR: It's not a god. It'll feed on your soul, but that doesn't make it a god. It is a vampire, and you don't need to give yourself to it. Hey, do you mind if I tell you a story? One you might not have heard. All the elements in your body were forged many, many millions of years ago, in the heart of a far away star that exploded and died. That explosion scattered those elements across the desolations of deep space. After so, so many millions of years, these elements came together to form new stars and new planets. And on and on it went. The elements came together and burst apart, forming shoes and ships and sealing wax, and cabbages and kings. Until eventually, they came together to make you. You are unique in the universe. There is only one Merry Gejelh. And there will never be another. Getting rid of that existence isn't a sacrifice. It is a waste.

The Doctor representations salvation from the god's denial of reality by offering science, actual knowledge, affirmations of the genuine shared reality they inhabit. His speech is the extension of this, where he reaffirms his own experiences as true and inalienable to a god whose domination come in the form of denying such things.

>Oh, you like to thing you're a god. But you're not a god. You're just a parasite eaten out with jealousy and envy and longing for the lives of others. You feed on them. On the memory of love and loss and birth and death and joy and sorrow. So, come on, then. Take mine. Take my memories. But I hope you've got a big appetite, because I have lived a long life and I have seen a few things.

 No.228850

And furthermore,

>I walked away from the last Great Time War. I marked the passing of the Time Lords.

A fact virtually nobody else alive can attest to, something of dubious accuracy that we know to be right but the universe doesn't. The Doctor is affirming the legitimacy of actual truth in light of a god of lies. His speech is a repudiation of religious gaslighting, of the false realities conjured up by the powerful to sustain their dominion over the masses.

>I saw the birth of the universe and I watched as time ran out, moment by moment, until nothing remained. No time. No space. Just me.

Again, scientific fact that nobody else can attest to. The truth is his own, and that is why it is vital he makes a show of it.

> I walked in universes where the laws of physics were devised by the mind of a mad man. I've watched universes freeze and creations burn.

And again.

>I've seen things you wouldn't believe. I have lost things you will never understand. And I know things. Secrets that must never be told. Knowledge that must never be spoken. Knowledge that will make parasite gods blaze. So come on, then. Take it! Take it all, baby! Have it! You have it all!

You see where I'm going with this. His speech is reason and truth and science casting dogma and deception and theocracy into the light, where the legitimacy of his claims theoretically trump theirs.

But of course, it isn't enough. It never is in reality, is it? Having the truth "on your side" doesn't strip politicians of their power. What does?

>Well, I brought something for you. This. The most important leaf in human history. The most important leaf in human history. It's full of stories, full of history. And full of a future that never got lived. Days that should have been that never were. Passed on to me. This leaf isn't just the past, it's a whole future that never happened. There are billions and millions of unlived days for every day we live. An infinity. All the days that never came. And these are all my mum's.

>Well, come on then. Eat up. Are you full? I expect so, because there's quite a difference, isn't there, between what was and what should have been. There's an awful lot of one, but there's an infinity of the other. And infinity's too much, even for your appetite.

The leaf isn't truth via fact, via history, via fact. It's the truth of possibility, of - as Murray Gold terms it - "Infinite Potential". It is the truth of the possibility that circumstances can be different. That is what's required to topple the episode's tyrannical theocracy - recognition of the possibility that things can be different, and the active mantling of that fact. Note that it comes from the working ordinary human woman instead of the ancient quasi-aristocratic alien man as well.

It's not for nothing that the sequence of speeches is concluded by Clara taking, and surmounting, the Doctor's place. The Doctor's invocation of his own lore proves not enough, but Clara emphasising the potential of future lore, "stories unwritten" is. The connections to Kill the Moon, where Clara reaffirms the potential in Earth's future, and Hell Bent, where Clara mounts the Doctor role herself in an episode glittered with the Doctor's past lore but ending on the promise of her unwritten future stories, are evident thematic jumping-off points from here. There is plenty going on in the episode.

Most people seem to prefer The One Doctor. Maybe it's because British people have a preference for Monty Python-like sketch movies.

Yet I've always enjoyed the way Bang-bang-a-boom! (in contrast to its title) manages to put a well-crafted structure underneath all the parodies. It makes fun of almost all known TV Sci-Fi tropes (and many other things like Eurovision which the Doctor wins with spoons) while still encapsulating all of them in a whodunit parody. Plus the characters get what seems to be deliberate clumsy development which eventually turns out to make them look really human. For short, a real tour de force.

The One Doctor success also seems to come from Baker's performance, but I've always had the feeling that in most early BF, and particularly here, Colin is playing more himself than his Doctor.

What's your opinion, /who/?

isn't that a groundless and unilateral choice? the Doctor IS an alien. Human genders are irrelevant. Retconning the Time Lords to make them gender-shifting to some extent is fine, but since they've always used genderly pronouns, it necessarily means we've also retconned that this is their own method of designation. Retcon is all about giving new explanations and elements and tying them back to what already existed, it does not allow to overwrite every single line of the show.

Maybe the logo could be just pinned like a badge to the top left or right corner as a way to get it in there. Could even cycle the different colour schemes of the logo people have been coming up with. Unsure whether to have any opacity on it there or not, depends how badge-y it should look.

-make Courtney Indian

-have Demons come after Caretaker and before Kill the Moon, a kind of Courtney trilogy

-12 trying and failing to save the day would work well, although it wouldn't be as powerful and relevant as it was for S11/13

-12 might fixate too hard on one aspect of it all (religion? politics?) and Clara would probably have to reprimand him into seeing the bigger+closer picture

-the whole "stories/lies we push on others" theme would go really well with the 12/Clara era

Planescape: Torment avellone head writer

KOTOR 2 avellone head writer

MGS2 (V comes really close tho, 2>V>4>3>1>PW)

MGSV

The Witcher 1 (all 3 are GOAT but 1 is my fav)

Morrowind (Daggerfall and Oblivion are also GOAT)

Deus Ex, er, hard to choose, 1+HR+MD are all GOAT

Vtmb

RDR

The KOTOR games haven't really aged well to modern sensibilities, and 2 is finnicky to set up (you need a specific mod, at least it's on the Steam mod thing now), but the writing in 2 is just phenomenal, easily the best written thing released under the SW IP imo.

>>229140

100% convinced 2077 will be pure kino, but who knows when the release date is, so I'm not "hype", if you know what I mean.

Fucking Bioware :( I hear DA4 got what they'd developed internally reset to fit the games-as-service model so eughrrrrrr. Anthem looks utter shit too.

Who knows with Bethesda. I usually love their gameplay loops but F4 felt so old to me, and if Starfield is just Skyrim in space, then…

I'll be a sucker for TES6 no matter how shit it might be though, I'm just too hooked into that world. I'll pay and play and verge away.

It'll be interesting for CDPR have to write for a more vague/player-determined protag; I think a lot of the strength of the writing for the Witcher games is that Geralt himself had a pretty defined personality even though you could in-character alter his choices. Will be interesting to see how they attempt to grapple with writing for the sort of RPG protag that is hard to make not bland, especially with voice-acted line limitations

>>229151

There's an enhanced version of PS:T that'd be a lot easier to play than the old version I did back in the day. A trillion mods for NV, some really amazing, but it's perfectly GOAT vanilla, there's just a lot of cool improvements/changes one can make. DX1 is so reactive and kino, although the later games have better writing.

Love Gone Home. Dear Esther and Firewatch were walking simulators I really loved too.

>>229155

Michael Arndt was hired to script his sequel ideas, a lot of the hubbub with the transition from Arndt to JJ+Kasdan was over how Disney gently untangled themselves from all the Lucas stuff (remember originally it looked like he was gonna be some sort of consultant and his script outlines were actually part of the deal to Disney. This ain't even touching on the fact technically Hamill etc signed up for the LUCAS movies but the contracts were transferred to Disney as part of the deal, something he likes to moan about now and again…)

I remember back in the New Vegas days this one dude developed this series of, like, five mods with interconnected stories that all added up to something like 40 hours of gameplay. The one dude basically single-handedly made his own standalone game/expansion in its own right over a couple of years. Parts of it were pretty amateur but it was entirely voice-acted, new environments, its own story unconnected to any actual NV story stuff…it was really impressive. I love modding communities.

as someone who is super into behind the scenes stuff from Star Wars, Lucas' "Sequel Trilogy treatment" sounds way more interesting than it probably was. According to him he wanted to finally introduce the Whills which would be tiny microscopic aliens or some shit, but either way his treatment was only for Episode 7 and was just like 2 paragraphs long. I also think that he only wrote it to make buying Lucasfilm look more lucrative for Disney and wasn't actually meant to be his well thought out plan. It was written before the sale.

The subversion in the S5, S9, and S10 finales is absolutely intentional, and personally I think it's a godsend. I was, and am, so over the RTD style "the stakes must be EVEN HIGHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" every finale. Paring things down and focusing on the series themes and character arcs works tonnes better imo. How much do you remember from the S3 or S4 finale compared to "we're all stories in the end"? Who cares about the reality detonator or whatever anymore? I wouldn't say Moff is overpromising, because he knows full well just concentrating on le epic drama (the Doctor, er, fights Rassilon!) always ends up toothless because it's just fluff really. I'd agree with you that in construction they're 'anticlimactic' but I think that's a good thing and I enjoy it.

What I find more perplexing is something like Rancor el Coloth where even the buildup isn't present, it just kind of skips ahead to the sort of coda section to a finale. Such a bizarre episode.

Some of the Telltale stories are cool, but I hate the fucking gameplay so much, the awkward walking around and puzzles, plus the inability to save nearly all the time, etc. I hate when devs get smarmy about "hehe you should only be able to save in X rare circumstance, it's part of the EXPERIENCE", fuck you we don't all have unlimited time to play and replay your game, sometimes we need to put it down or reload a specific bit, i dont give a FUCK

I thought Undertale was literally about furry sex, have I been misled?

>I thought Undertale was literally about furry sex

No, it’s a RPG about a kid who ends up in monster town and it’s up to the player whether you kill people in fights or become friends

The appeal is in the writing and partly the character designs depending on how furry you are. It was made by a guy who worked on homestuck and appeals to similar demographics so there’s a lot of overlap with “that sort of fanbase”, if you know what I mean

A shame the writers of the Telltale game probably won't have anything to do with Borderlands 3, would love to have them inject their charm into the game since TFTB proved the Borderlands universe has a lot of potential story/character wise.
