Sure there are similarities, but you can discuss them without accusing of "copying" or "plagiarism". Simultaneous inspiration exists; just because someone else beat a writer to an idea doesn't mean there was copying, especially when there's no particularly good reason to think the writer is necessarily even aware of the story. And frankly, when you're going to paint a story with such broad broad strokes that you can say "The Doctor's Wife = The Axis of Insanity" (because yeah, Neil Gaiman totally 100% listened to a fucking Fifth Doctor Big Finish), it's no wonder that similarities are cropping up everywhere. Every single story could be painted as plagiarism that way. Insisting on stuff like this is what gives a bad name to EU fans.

That said, I'm seriously impressed that you took the time and made that list without using any Lawrence Miles stories.

The way I always frame it in my mind is that Loz, Moff, and the rest were all steeped in the same background of stories and ideas floating around during that specific time and place, so of course some of their ideas will have some similarities. The change in Doctor Who between 1989 and 1999 was bigger than anything before or since, and everything since that has been a reaction to those stories, but that doesn't mean those arose from a vacuum or get any miraculous status.

I mean, look at something as major as the Time War, arguably the biggest single thing that NuWho has "copied" from Lawrence Miles. In Alien Bodies, . And yet in Miles himself admits that AB "shares 95% of its DNA" with Alan Moore's 4-D War comics. A time war ending in the destruction of Gallifrey was a popular fanfiction trope by that point: the AudioVisuals, made by Nick Briggs and Jim Mortimore and the crew that would later become BBV and eventually Big Finish, showed the Daleks ravaging Gallifrey and introduced the "Last of the Time Lords" aesthetic literal decades before it was used in Adventuress of Henrietta Street and The End of the World. And in fact, the language the Faction Paradox series uses ("the War"; "the Enemy"; Gallifrey as "the Homeworld") is directly lifted from RTD's Damaged Goods!

The takeaway from this shouldn't be that Lawrence Miles copied or plagiarized the AudioVisuals or Damaged Goods, just like the takeaway of Name of the Doctor shouldn't be that Moffat copied or plagiarized Alien Bodies. It's just that this is a shared universe, and that means ideas can flow without any clear claim to authorship, so axiomatically there's nothing wrong with a writer using part of an idea that's been done before in a different story or different medium!

It's certainly a known fact that the Time War idea has been around for a while, in many forms. I could agree with your "common mood and common breed" point of view. To be frank what bothers me the most is RTD and Moffat barely recognising this influence. Except if they're completely innocent and have somehow found all those common ideas independently (which I sincerely doubt), for me not acknowledging the major influence of the wilderness authors means they're somehow OK with taking all the praise for those ideas. And that's not right. That's making them far from top class writers, as some people are calling them.

That's for ideas. The case of individual stories with almost exactly the same synopsis in the same universe is different. Of course there are many common tropes in Sci Fi which every author are drawing on thus making many stories looking similar. But that doesn't mean plagiarism doesn't exist. The same synopsis twice in the same universe. From authors which often know each other. Again, I'm not a judge, most of the cases I've quoted are probably not legally qualifying for plagiarism, but still… That's a matter of honesty. As a viewer and fan, you somehow owe to feel swindled.

I was as surprised as you with TDW = AOI, I didn't want to believe it. Not from Gaiman. But the coincidence is just too big to swallow. It's the TARDIS graveyard detail that spills the beans. As you said, we don't know what the author have read and listened.

Torrenting isnt piracy.

Piracy is intercepting an IP, making copies of it, and then selling it. The profits go to the guy selling it instead of the original authors.

Which is why its called piracy: its a reference to actual pirates who intercept trading ships, nick their shit, and then sell the stolen cargo in ports. Profits go to them instead of the merchants who own the cargo.

Meanwhile what happens in torrenting is some cunt who most likely bought something shared his shit in a torrent site. Nobody profits at all from this act. If anything his crime is copyright violation. But not piracy.

Now if they stole it. That's another matter.

damn and people said blade runner 2049 was too long (i would have happily stayed there for another hour i was enjoying it so much)

i guess they wouldn't make it 3 hours long if it didn't need to be. it's not like it's in disney's best interests to make long films.

 No.230351

Yeah, it might well be a bloated mess but the fact they're willing to make it that long at least means it's not a rush job (given the sheer volume of stuff they have to cover, character arcs to wrap up, etc).

when has that ever mattered in the MCU? there have only been 2 films where one of these characters had a satisfying and logical conclusion to their character arcs (Tony Stark learning to live without Iron Man and destroying all of his suits at the end of IM3, Thor no longer being defined by his hammer and accepting that "Asgard is not a place, it's a people" at the end of Ragnarok) and both fucking times the exact next time we saw those characters, all of their growth from the previous film was completely undermined/ignored and they were returned to their default settings (Iron Man immediately flying around with a brand new army of Iron Man drones at the beginning of Age of Ultron, all of the Asgardians getting killed off-screen/Thor getting a new eye/Thor gettinG A NEW FUCKING HAMMER in Infinity War)

also the only things that Endgame "needs" to accomplish is have the heroes retcon the snap and bring all the characters with upcoming films already announced back from the dead, Thanos to be defeated, and for Tony and Steve to both die. I specify those two characters in particular not because they're the two most popular/the two highest paid actors, but because narratively those two are both essentially on borrowed time since they went to their death, accepted their fate, "died", and were only brought back from the dead from circumstances beyond their control. For Cap this was when he was in an ice cube, and for Iron Man this was when he flew the nuke through the portal at the end of the Avengers. This also applies to Thanos as well since I guess he used the gauntlet to stop Thor's axe from killing him?

I think one of the more annoying things of the Doctor Who fandom is how some fans of the classic - not all of them, but it does happen - get mad or annoyed at the fans of New Who who haven’t seen Classic Who.

I would love to watch Classic Who, and I know I’m not the only one. However, it’s impossible. Not because the episodes are simply not online, but they don’t exist anymore. They were destroyed, lost, whatever, but the BBC no longer has a lot of Classic Who.

So to the Classic Who fans who have a problem with the New Who fans not seeing the old series, it’s not because we don’t want to see it, it’s because we can’t. And I’m not going to watch a show with big chunks missing from it. That would be like reading a book with pages missing. And I won’t do that.

 No.230372

I get mixed feelings over neo sometimes, i really like him and think hes great and what he writes is great, but idk the combination of him working and being a bit older and having won over a girl or whatever happened there, and off adventuring in other countries and shit, it's just kind of like..why's this chad coming here? Idk. I know its just me being insecure now I actually type it out. I just cant imagine ever being the type of guy to move out let alone nail down a full time job let alone adventure overseas let alone flirt back and forth with a girl to..whatever point that is.

BF were the first to feature a female Doctor in a full story (nice technical conditions there) but that story is transphobic as fuck, to the point that Nick "deadname harder" Briggs was forced to come out and actually apologize. Totally a win right there.

>It would be interesting to compare BF and NuWho's results to the Bechdel test.

BF literally had an episode called "The Bekdel Test" that didn't pass the Bechdel test. Next.

>Plus BF has a shitload of female-led spin-offs.

Yeah, pretty much every BF spin-off is female-led. That doesn't equate to "well-written female characters", though. In fact, considering BF's single-digits percentage of female writers, this hyperfocus on every remotely-competent-seeming female character smacks of fetishization.

>Weren't BF the first to feature (or at least cast) a black Time Lord (Don Warrington as Rassilon)?

Shit, you're right. Casting one POC definitely absolves them of all guilt. Classic Who also cast POC, so it's nonsense to suggest it was racist, right? It's not like Big Finish has made a white woman play a POC character or anything, that would be insanely inappropriate!

>BBC gave the studio less than they asked for and told them to make it work

or

>animation studio's initial estimate was slightly off

>realised they needed more time

>BBC didn't want to pay any more

or

>BBC didn't want to delay manufacturing because factory time was already booked

or

>Animation studio didn't ask for more time/money (maybe already had their next project scheduled) and cutting a scene was the only way to complete in the allotted time

Or maybe it was always the plan because it was all the animation studio had time for between other projects

And now we've circled around to that same revisionist history again.

 No.230534

Nobody would have cared if they just cut the scene, and this is evidenced by literally nobody caring about the cut scenes from previous animations. It's that they mocked the scene they cut. It's completely understandable why people who are big enough fans of Doctor Who to support animations like this would take issue with scenes from the original stories being dismissed like that. Perhaps in future, those invovlved with animations won't act that way towards scenes they won't adapt again.

 No.230535

>>230533

Why they chose that scene specifically to cut is not relevant. They had creative ownership of the whole story and circumstances that required something to be cut. Having ownership and familiarity of the story, they made a decision about which scene wouldn’t make it into the final story. That doesn’t mean they didn’t still have ownership over that scene.

The fact they used humour to downplay it in a press interview is completely irrelevant. You are offended by someone profaning classic who, I get that, but it doesn’t matter. The conclusions you are coming to are wrong.

You have no idea at what point they decided the scene had to be cut. Given it’s the only thing that was cut, assuming it was never going to be in shows a complete lack of understanding of the creative production process. It was likely still storyboarded and had animatics made just like the rest, and only later in production they realised they were just short on time and something had to give.

The fact it was not in the final product does not mean they do not have creative ownership over that particular scene. That’s an absolutely obtuse and baseless thing to assert.

Do you honestly believe that, right at the very start of production, they decided ‘you know what, we probably only have time to make 98, let’s cut this scene I don’t like’?

It’s far more likely that they planned to do everything, that even the cut scenes had earlier stages of production complete, but as deadlines came closer a scene or two at the bottom of the priority list had to be killed. That’s how content production works.

Endgame didn't have a title until a few months ago, and its only had 2 trailers with not a lot of footage in each. The secrecy aspect might work for fans who are spoilerphobes but those people are already gonna see the movie no matter what. I don't know if that approach appeals to casual audiences. i feel the same way though, buffy felt so exciting when i first saw it and i don't wanna try and recapture the feeling. i feel like the dialogue will be a lot more grating and… well, whedony. i don't think i could tolerate xander now.

i'm getting interested in vampire stuff, i'm looking for more films too. i guess the craze happened towards the end of the 2000s too with twilight/vampire diaries/true blood. and the 90s, with buffy

i'm still bewildered vtmb 2 exists

i used to be one of those 'omg u have to watch buffy/angel in this specific order by varying the episodes like that' dweebs

RTD who so influenced by. when people watch shows later the whole culture they came from is lost. i wonder what we dont realise about where different classic who eras drew from.

actually getting spike in torchwood was wild

bryan fuller was working on an interview with a vampire series last year but pretty sure he left that

vmtb2 sounds like an april fools joke in how perfect everything about it is. i was reading today theres no voiced protag and much more dialogue choices than the first game. crazy.

 No.230690

>The original animated Dumbo (1941) clocks in at only 64 minutes, a relic of the days when an afternoon at the movies meant a double feature with cartoons in between. Now, in an era when movies must be events unto themselves, Disney’s live-action redo of its flying-elephant fable runs just under three and a half hours. That necessitates either a whole lot of padding or a complete rewrite; screenwriter Ehren Kruger, who’s new to the Disney machine but not to blockbuster filmmaking, splits the difference by keeping the barest minimum of the original plot and bulking it up with new characters and themes. Most of these are wholly expected—kudos to whoever gave a presentation to Disney brass on the importance of STEM education for girls, which has made it into two live-action films in a row. But there’s one plotline in the reimagined Dumbo that’s truly surprising, and even ballsy, when you think about it. Basically, the movie offers a metaphor for the evils of corporate mergers, with villainous circus mogul V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton) standing in for Disney itself.

people had been moaning about the idea of clara coming back as soon as face the raven ended, as if they'd just shut out any actual reason why she needed to. it's like they already decided they wanted her to die, because we all know that death = automatic kino, to teach her a cynical lesson about getting too big for her boots. then when moffat twists it into a life-affirming ending where clara isn't punished for daring to reach the doctor's level, they just don't wanna fuckin know. they'd just be happy with the doctor angsting about his companion dying.
