I'd always been torn between thinking that 8 had either regenerated really early into the Time War or had regenerated right at the end of the War. I wouldn't have been mad if they'd portrayed him dying on the very first day ala one of the EDA's

there's no other reason as to how his experiment could have brought him to this conclusion.

When he posts with his trip, he derails discussions because people rightfully will not stand idly by while he completely misses the point of the community. When he posted anonymously and didn't draw attention to himself, he fit in.

How the fuck can anyone in their right, non-narcissistic mind come to the conclusion that resuming tripping is the right course of action after that?

 No.28314

The Second Doctor is a great entry point to the Classic Series. I just wish more episodes were found, but it seems like we never will find any more than we've already discovered. His serials created an environment that was beautifully-crafted, intriguing, comical and just-plain Doctor Who. He was more of a plot-driven, rather than character-driven Doctor, with his stories focusing on the wacky side of life in the cosmos rather than the dark and brooding Twelfth Doctor era. Now, the Twelfth Doctor is without a doubt THE New Series Doctor, but the Second Doctor contrasts him so perfectly that it shows the broad spectrum of life as an ever-changing, ever-growing, ever-diverse character. The Krotons, The Mind Robber, and my favorite, The War Games, all showed how good, wholesome and downright amazing the Second Doctor was.

 No.28315

>>28313

I honestly do want to discuss how the public will evaluate the Capaldi era later on, though. I wonder if it'll be seen as just the "last few crazy years" before the ascendant Chibnall era.

I agree that the Second Doctor and the Twelfth Doctor had a contrast, as 12 was more aggressive than Two. But I think that hey were both rather alien. Ten's humanness is a better contrast with Two, I think.

 No.28318

>>28315

Chibnall, with the exception of Day One, always has lovely stories to tell. Even Cyberwoman had some good points (note: some). The Power of Three and Countrycide are my favorites. However, I don't think my position on 12 being the best NuWho Doctor will change with Jodie, and this is a very hard thing for me to say. I just loved Capaldi so much as the Doctor, it almost brings me to tears to know that he's gone. I will be faithful and understanding to what Chibnall brings to this wonderful show.

I think that Series 11 will be darker in tone than people are expecting. Nevertheless, we'll get lots of good character drama.

It took me time to warm up to Twelve, as I came in with Eleven. I don't think his personality fully clicked with me until "Do you think one betrayal make me abandon you?" scene in Dark Water. It's weird having seen one whole era come and go, especially as Twelve changed so much throughout.

It's just weird that Twelve's era didn't work at all for some people. I think it was the bad aftertaste of Series 7b, combined with the aggressively changed character dynamics (12 as ornery not-sugarcoating Doctor + Clara as morally ambiguous adventure junkie), that doomed both Series 8 and 9. (Series 9 was also affected by "wackier 12", especially the tank scene in TMA. The tank scene was intentionally out-of-character for Twelve, but still left the wrong mark on some people.)

Series 10 was better, but by then the "Writing is bad" reputation already took hold.

>An excellent Doctor that combined great acting with top notch writing

What makes the writing in Series 8-10 good is harder to describe, and partially an aesthetic taste. Everyone agrees that the "Seven + Ace" team is revolutionary, but a lot of people hate Clara and see her as everything wrong with the Capaldi era, which is unfortunate, because a lot of Series 8 focuses on Clara and relies on the audience empathizing with her. And Series 9's final episode is a culmination of an arc for Clara, that started in Series 8, which some people never realized was an arc that was happening (and for others, it was obvious.). Plus Series 9 has eps like Sleep No More, which if you see it as "sleep dust monsters LMAO", is a crap ep with a weird twist, but if you see it as "a meta ep about how the person in control of the camera controls the perspective, in which the villain is intentionally trying to cram reality into the form of a simple narrative, and the Doctor not only never finds out what's happenning, but he also basically gets the whole plot wrong while explaining it, thus showing his fallibility", then SNM becomes a genius episode. But SNM requires a close watching or rewatching to see that, and SNM looks like a boring space ep. Plus, it's a Mark Gattis ep, and no one expects a Mark Gattis ep to need a rewatch.

The explanation above isn't to exonerate Sleep No More, nor am I saying that all Series 9 eps were genius (the Toby Whithouse 2-parter is basically what it says it is). But Series 8 and 9 were rather sophisticated, in a way that required deep watching, and so it'll be harder for it to get a re-evaluation. Especially since those eps were uneven at times.

Series 10 is the season that may be easiest for audiences to appreciate, although I somewhat think it's the least complex? It needed a few more Bill-centric eps. I feel that we barely got to know her.

 No.28329

>>28328

I think what I'm trying to say, is that for Seven, people stopped watching because of the quality of the Sixth Doctor run, and early Seven. By the time Seven + Ace started, some people knew it was getting better, but it was too late (also Grade hated Who.)

But, people were still watching Series 8 + 9, and they didn't like it while they were watching it. This isn't people missing under-appreciated gems–this is people watching, and not liking or understanding what they saw.

I think it's still a vocal minority, and most people like 12's era, especially Series 10. But I wonder if Capaldi's era will be seen as a mediocre aberration, rather than a crowning jewel.

In retrospect, I think 12 got fucked over by Smith's early departure, which forced Moffat to cram all the Trenzalore stuff into a single Christmas special. The premise of 12's character arc is that he's been sent into a crisis by the trauma of staying 900 years on Trenzalore, which Time of the Doctor fails to convey – the Doctor seems to be having a rather jolly good time staying in the town of Christmas, which makes 12's newfound stern attitude rather sudden and unexpected. If we had got a full series on Trenzalore paving the way to a darker Doctor, I imagine he would have been recieved much better.

Mickey Rourke

Which is a shame because unlike Eccleston you could actually see Rourke's passion and intensity on camera just fine, he really sold the character just on his performance alone.

Hugo Weaving, meanwhile, turned in a perfect execution of a two dimensional villain, every particularly smart or clever moment being either a result of the direction or the writing ("Not a scratch, Doctor Zola" comes to mind). Weaving has a lot more nuance as an actor, but clearly recognized a character that did not call for it and instead focused on putting all his energy into the stagey and mime-y skills an actor needs to emote and appeal to the audience despite wearing a mask or a restrictive or alienating costume. These are skills he also put to excellent use in V for Vendetta.

Meanwhile, Eccleston didn't care, the direct didn't care, the writers didn't care, and ultimately audiences didn't care.

I'd say they'd have aged better without the frankly over-the-top usage of them in S10 combined with the ill-thought-out blindness arc. But they aren't actually a bad concept. The show should experiment with more alternatives for the sonic.

The problem with it was the lack of clarity regarding how much the sunglasses actually allowed him to see. Are you sure? I don't know. At least there's an in universe "red setting". I wonder how many concepts they laid out before choosing that, and what they looked like. Like for ST:TOS they brought out 5 or 6 concepts for the enterprise. The designers all liked the enterprise they eventually went with and had already produced models for it while the other concepts were just illustrations. They kind of used the mock up to force gene roddenberry into choosing that design. I can't see anyone "loving" this sonic.

I'm not a Queen fan by any stretch but I have thoughts about this trailer

Firstly it's kind of silly the way it makes it look like Queen's "big pioneering struggle" is releasing a radio single that's slightly longer than average (what is Like a Rolling Stone)

Secondly if a movie was made about my favourite artist and it was pseudonymd after one of their songs and seemed to revolve fairly heavily around that one single song I'd be inclined to roll my eyes pretty heavily. But that's marketing I guess. (Again to bring up Dylan, as a fan it's pretty cool that we have a biopic of him that actually has somewhat elevated artistic merit compared to most)

If you want to wash that taste out of your mouth with some actual good + even experimental "music biopics", Love and Mercy (Brian Wilson/the Beach Boys) and I'm Not There (Bob Dylan) are fantastic. Walk the Line (Johnny Cash) is as far as the traditional take on music biopics can be taken imo.

When it's time, to be free

You know you gotta be what you wanna be

And if you open up your mind, see what's inside

It's gonna take some time, to realize

But if you look inside I'm sure you'll find

Over your shoulder you know that I told you

I'll always be pickin' you up when you're down

So just turn around…

It's interesting that a lot of recent pretty high profile shows are using time travel (I don't really wanna pseudonym them since that would constitute a spoiler in itself, but there's a few). I don't mean like sci-fi time travel shows, but shows that gradually kind of subversively added time travel as a story element. Is time travel becoming a bigger thing, or are shows just more into embracing the weird factor now, or some other third reason? I wonder what it means for Doctor Who that more prestige-y shows are using time travel as well now.

To be fair, time travel as a trope has been around for a long time and has been a common element even when doctor who was at its lowest(wilderness years); but I think the embrace of it as part of media in complete other genres is a testament to the blurring of genre lines: doctor who uses time travel to tell comedy or romance stories; and equally comedies like hot tub time machine or romances like About Time have risen in the like. Kinda reminds me of the rise of Jazz Rock where youd have Cream and Zappa and King Crimson on one side while you had Miles Davis's Fusion stuff and weather report and return to forever on the other side.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Doctor Who. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of temporal mechanics and quantum physics, most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also the Doctor's, specifically the Twelfth’s, nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Doctor Who truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in the Doctor’s catchphrases: “My boy; Oh my giddy aunt; Reverse the polarity; Would you like a jelly baby?; Brave heart; UNLIMITED RICE PUDDING; I think have amnesia; No more; Fantastic!; Allons-y!, Geronimo!; and Shut up!" which are a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Steven Moffat's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools… how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a Gallifreyan tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. I'd see it as the form of the show after the second wilderness. I'd imagine Tennant being brought back, or an obvious Tennant expy being used. An 18-episode series with each episode co-written by Cartmel, Aaronovitch, and Platt, and directed by Talalay. Starring Sylvester McCoy and Jodie Whittaker, with roughly equal screentime. Jodie has fairly normal adventures with her companions in the TARDIS, and McCoy has more esoteric ones, first wandering around some weird higher dimension, then ending up stranded with amnesia on some random planet. One episode is a Punchline adaptation. Towards the end, Seven finally recovers his memories, meets Thirteen, and saves her from Fenric. He then wanders into the depths of the TARDIS and meets the Corsair, whose spirit is trapped in a giant tea-kettle. The Corsair sends him back to the past on Gallifrey, where he stops Gallifreyan Clara from directing Hartnell to steal the right TARDIS. McCoy and Clara travel to Lungbarrow and find it empty. Clara screams. Cut to black. Mica Levi composes the score.

You're forgetting that throughout writing it and shooting it, Lynch and company were (presumably) not under some ridiculous illusion that the entire show would air in one uninterrupted 16-hour block, and did in fact write and shoot the series in the knowledge that they would ultimately edit into episodes. Hence the number of Roadhouse performances conspicuously matching up to the number of episodes minus the finale, for example.

But this is completely immaterial.

If Lynch ever decides to edit an uninterrupted version I will happily call that a movie. But what aired on Showtime in 2017 was a TV series and this fact cannot be changed.

It doesn't actually match up, there's a few episodes without any Roadhouse performance.

Would you concede it being edited as a TV show, but written and directed as a film? I feel like blanket referring it to a TV show in the same way that season 1 and 2 were a TV show does a discredit to those seasons, to TV in general, and to what The Return is. TV is a particular form with a particular workflow and the way TP achieved greatness in that form is entirely different than how it achieved greatness in how S3 was made. Being written as one single script, lacking renewal contracts and instead contracting people on as a predetermined filming engagement, production and postproduction being entirely discrete processes with no rollover, these things aren't how TV is made. I'm not saying it's more a film than a TV show as some sort of prestige thing since it's really good, just that the workflow it was made in, and the medium it fits best matches film much more closely than TV in my view.

You're right. My mistake. There is still a clear rule of the Roadhouse serving as the end credits sequence unless there is something more thematically important to go in its place that episode.

>Would you concede it being edited as a TV show, but written and directed as a film?

Okay, but (in response to this whole paragraph) I don't think the designations TV series or film can ever accurately capture what you want them to. The workflow for TV made today is radically different to that for TV made in 1963, but we still call them both TV, because there is more than one way of making TV and there will be others in future (with Lynch's film-like method being another one). The semantic division between "TV" and "film" comes from the format of the end product as experienced by the viewer, not from the method of production, so asking it to represent the production practices is inevitably a dead end.

Likewise there are anime films which essentially just consist of 3-4 episodes stitched together, but it makes no sense to call them TV series.

Perhaps the semantic issue comes down to there not really being an effective cover-all term for sequential audiovisual media the way "literature" can cover novels/short stories/poetry/etc. Film once really just meant something literally printed on film, movie meant moving pictures, television something broadcast on television, but a lot of these terms kind of collapse with the blurring of the lines that's going on now. I maintain there's merit to using the traditional attributes of the mediums as a kind of signifier, but I think anyone into media enough to have these kind of discussions is aware of how ultimately wishy-washy it is.

I'm iffy about your the-end-product-transmission-determines-the-medium definition because of things like films "transmitted" solely on Netflix/Amazon and not cinemas, or things like Inhumans created as TV shows but designed from the ground-up to be aired in cinemas.

Depends on the student/s and age. P. E. generally, the curriculums are generally pretty poorly designed and it crosses over a lot into stuff that should be getting covered outside of school.

Iirc music was compulsory in years 7 and 8 for me at least and, much as I love it, I think that's a lot more worthless than English/science/maths/history/geography.

>What is it about the Doctor that makes it so excellent when they're not there?

In L&M, it's the glorification of the 'hero' that the Doctor represents and what he should represent…and what he…never won't represent, sort of thing, eventually leading to the downfall of the main character(s) and their realisation that there's nothing great about him at all.

It's similar in CoE - that whole speech Gwen does about the Doctor looking down on earth in shame, even that is romanticising him. CoE examines the human condition and how purely disgraceful we can be without a calming influence, and humans who know him often depict the Doctor as some sort of God. The Doctor may be a God to some, he may be a God to himself, but he never gets to see the tsunami he leaves behind, and the lives he ruins. Because he never sees that, neither do we.

I'm not going back and proof-reading that, but there's a point in it somewhere - I hope it's articulated well enough.

Why is the RTD "has a great cynical take on the Doctor, and the universe at large, but doesn't let it through his audience-focused ratings-grabbing pandering style" internal conflict so mechanically similar to the Moffat "has a dark adult talk on the Doctor, and the universe at large, but doesn't let it through his insistence on being superficially positive and making the show for kids" internal conflict?
