I wish there were more examples of it, but both writers achieved that sometimes - Moff more than RTD, because he cared less about the viewing figures, but RTD had the aforementioned L&M and the even more on-the-nose CoE; Moffat had arguably all of series 8 (especially Listen) and Heaven Sent to explore his 'adult take'. I think what's more upsetting is that we so rarely got to see RTD's take on the Doctor and the universe, even though he's a fucking fantastic writer.

Fantastic ideas. This would really be the perfect medium for Daleks, imo: something like Dalek Empire but on TV. The 22nd century Dalek invasion is just such a good idea; I hope NuWho visits it sometime. (And that's not even taking into account Sarah Hadley's absolutely haunting vision of post-Invasion Earth from "Star's View of Caroline" and "Man of Smoke and Dust".)

Myself, I'd probably want something set in the City of the Saved. But I've already written about how I'd want a City of the Saved TV show to go.

>>28898

I dunno about that. It's not like any of those stories came about from "Wow this story is so good, I bet it'd even be good without the Doctor, let's try it." They were all "Well, we can't fully / properly include the Doctor in this story, for whatever reason. Where do we go from here?" (Except "Cabinet of Light", I guess.)

>>28922

This is a great analysis. When the Doctor is being used as an archetype in the background, it produces a completely different effect than when they're actually present as a character.

>The Doctor may be a God to some, he may be a God to himself, but he never gets to see the tsunami he leaves behind, and the lives he ruins. Because he never sees that, neither do we.

Great stuff.

That's part of what I meant to say with my post. If you have to make a Doctor-less Doctor Who story, you have to think very hard to find a reallyy convincing story idea to justify that. Dead Romance is a similar but very peculiar case - a novel from a range that can't use the Doctor, that doesn't even feature the main character of that range and that is linked to a different Doctor Who range from another publisher. Children of Earth is "just" a really brilliant season from a show that had some really poor ones as well.

>I get why they didn't let him do that, but I really wish they had.

Okay, I'm an idiot. I just checked and it was actually RTD who changed the ending, influenced by something Moffat said.

I think it's a damn shame. New Earth could have been what Sleep No More tried and failed to be in some ways: a working "sawardian" NuWho story where the Doctor can't save anyone. It would have been an absolute punch to the gut of a season opener and a much more interesting start to Tennant's run.

From a showrunner perspective, Tennant mercy-killing them all would have been too similar to Age of Steel. Although it would have been an interesting, and probably better, alternative, I agree with the decision here - especially considering it was a new Doctor's first proper episode.

It was on the planet Skaro that my old enemy the Master was finally put on trial. They say he listened calmly as his list of evil was read and sentence passed. Then he made his last, and I thought somewhat curious, request. He demanded that I - the Doctor, a rival Time Lord - should take his remains back to our home planet, Gallifrey.

It was a request they should never have granted.

They're similar in that the dress was a debate because it was an incredibly overexposed picture and many people don't understand how lighting and white balance in photography work, while this one is an audio recording taken with a shitty microphone that doesn't pick up much of the bass that would have made it sound more clearly like laurel

>Watching the abstracted light forms and patterns which appear in the opening sequence of Dr.Who has become a familiar ritual for all of us. The wonder of the opening is that it manages to capture in only a very few moments of screen time the atmosphere of Dr.Who.

>When that blue police box zooms in from a morass of complex light forms, there is no question of it"s right to be there. So already, within seconds of starting, the title designer has drawn us into the world of Dr. Who, & supspended our disbelief, setting an atmosphere that allows the rest of the programme to continue unhindered by attempts to justify the reality of what is happening.

>Bernard Lodge, senior BBC graphics designer is the man responsible for 13 years of Dr.Who graphics and 5 opening sequences. To achieve results like the Dr.Who titles, one requires more than expensive equipment and technical knowledge. One requires the artistic integrity and sensitivity of a man like Bernard Lodge.

A lesser imitation of Gunn but that's not really a bad thing for the MCU to be trying. It's not a coincidence these films work better when they embrace being outright comedies. It's much less revolutionary than hailed, but the NZ comedy largely works, the composer actually tries, and there's even a few rare moments of imaginative visuals.

>There probably have been weaker episodes in the past four years, but now, for me, it's hard to see which ones. It's probably my fault if an episode is weak. I mean, okay, we all talk about Aliens of London with a slightly regretful tone, because we were learning, we'd never worked with prosthetics before, and the schedule was impossible… well, do you know, I watched it on BBC Three the other night - and what a classic episode! The Doctor's in Downing Street. A spaceship flies into Big Ben. Penelope Wilton [Harriet Jones] is watching Slitheen murder people. Frankly, it's brilliant. If I'm absolutely honest, I think some fans don't yet realise how good these last four years have been.

>I've been watching some of Series Three - not for work, but with a state of mind that says, deliberately, this isn't as good as I thought it was. In fact, it's crap. I've failed. I'm rubbish. I'm lucky. I'm a fraud. I've lost it, and this next script is the script that will expose that. Etc.

>Captain Jack is blown to smithereens with a bomb in his stomach, then all his cells sort of draw back together, so there's no way he can wake up fully clothed. The things I do to see arse.

>What if she's a jewel thief? A top-class, glamorous cat burglar? The Black Canary, that sort of thing. Nice. Sexy. Fun. That's just a rough idea, but a good character, instantly sellable to a guest actress, and a great partnership for the Doctor — a sexy, sassy, hard-but-lovely woman with the heart of a thief. THAT is how to invent a story.

>I can't believe that some people still don't watch Doctor Who! I find that mad. They're idiots.

Given hunter's previous behaviour, I believe he would take being ignored as passive acceptance. I mean, he likes the Capaldi era, and he appreciates Troughton's era. That at least raises him above a certain "pleb" level.

Not that anon but I agree the original S4 is audience-hostile insofar as there are long paces where it's intentionally confounding, confusing, doesn't make sense, and it takes an investment of several hours before the actual comedy starts compounding. The season all but demands a rewatch to make sense both narratively and comedically. S1-S3 were paced fantastically and were easy watches that you could discover new brilliance in in rewatches, but S4 actively doesn't even work at all for long stretches before the end and before a possible rewatch. It's not Twin Peaks level condemning-its-own-existence or RLM hating-their-audience level, but there is an element of not giving the audience what they want (at least easily) there.

 No.29311

>>29306

AD4 is audience-hostile in the sense that it was structured in a format different to the previous seasons and not in a way that the audience expected or particularly wanted. It tells a different type of story since they didn't have the luxury of having all the cast together

>>29314

I loved it on first watch too, the satisfaction I got later in the season where things started connecting was the best experience I've had with the show. The S3 finale is so fantastic I was coming into S4 ready to hate it since I hate great endings being undercut by unnecessary sequels, but S4 transcended even that finale in the end.

I do thik there's a bit of a distinction between being audience-hostile and being challenging and would call S4 the latter if I had to choose. I don't feel like Hurwitz was trying to be hostile to the audience as much as trying to be as creative and funny as he could be with the constraints he'd been handed.

>>29316

He's had many little deaths, if you know what I mean

 No.29320

>>29319

For sure. I'd agree that it was audience-hostile if it made some kind of point that all the Bluths are a lot happier and better on their own, but instead it goes out of its way how outside of that incestuous family they all just become sadder, worse versions of themselves (one of the reasons I love it)

Related, I think what S4 did with Michael is brilliant. When you decouple his behaviour from regularly structured narratives, when you view him through the POVs of other character's instead of centring the show around him, you see that…he's just another Bluth. He's not the sane one or the kind one or the smart one, he's just another one of the deranged, selfish lot. Ron Howard tries to explain to him George Michael is the real sympathetic character amongst the mix and Michael doesn't get it, but after S4, we do.

The west, as always, is much more concerned than SK. People are used to how NK operates here and so the media here doesn't get any mileage out of spinning huge stories (doomsday or celebratory) that people will naturally see through here from experience. That said, there is cautious interest in what's happening right now. There are a lot of variables. I think Kim is shrewd enough to try and capitalise on the very particular set of circumstances he's in right now, and both Trump and Moon can mutually benefit from certain scenarios as well…Trump is unpredictable though. Both Koreas are good at manipulating him, but the US is a bad faith negotiator, so its complicated.

Putting thought and energy into shitposting is counter intuitive unless you're some kind of avant garde shitposter which in that case you shouldn't be surprised by the lack of reception. Just try and contribute to the conversation, or start one.

>This movie was not as bad as I expected — I really didn't like Zack Snyder's previous Superman movie. No effort was made to get the audience to care for the characters and consequently all the fight scenes and special effects just left me cold.

>But, as I say, this new effort is not as bad as I expected, and not bad in the same way I expected… but still pretty terrible. Shall we go through the headline mistakes?

>Like so many movies of this ilk, it begins with a big action sequence which means nothing because we don’t care about the characters yet. I am developing a maxim for film writing: a car chase is only interesting if we care about the characters in the cars.

>Well, that's not the case here. So much so that there is a car chase during which I actually fell asleep.

>What is really unforgivable is that the "end of level" monster (i.e. the one at the movie's big climax) is truly, unbelievably crap. I really mean I couldn’t believe it — I was absolutely sure it must metamorphose into something more interesting. But it didn’t. Guys, since H.R, Geiger created the Alien in 1979, this kind of crap is no longer acceptable.

>Also, making your big shock ending the death of Superman is stupid beyond belief. Because literally nobody is going to buy the notion that he’s really dead. So there goes your ending.

>Well, I really didn't expect to be writing about this… Other than the magnificent Wonder Woman, the movies made from DC comics in recent years have been an uninspiring bunch.

>This, it has to be said, is mostly due to Zack Snyder. I'd greatly enjoyed Snyder's work on Dawn of the Dead and, indeed, Watchmen (the greatest DC comic of them all).

>However, as gifted as he is, his movies tend towards empty spectacle, to say the least (see, or rather don't see, Sucker Punch).

>So the recent Superman and Batman franchises, as presided over by Snyder, have wildly missed the mark. But not this one. Which seems to me to be due to the involvement of Joss Whedon (of Buffy and the Avengers fame).

>The reason Zack Snyder's work fails is because he has no gift for characterisation, or at least no interest in it. His stuff is cold.

>With the result that his DC movies have been glum, joyless slug-fests. It doesn't matter how great your action sequences are if the audience isn't engaged with the characters. (Superman v Batman was a classic example of this.)

>But when Joss Whedon enters the equation, all that changes. Whedon is all about characterisation, and fun. He brings warmth and humour.

>Oh… and I apologise for the "spoiler" that Superman is back in this movie. But you never really believed he was dead, did you?

>t's getting embarrassing, all these movies based on Marvel comics. It used to be that I could dismiss at least half of them as junk. Now, to my chagrin, every one is a winner. It makes me seem like I have no critical faculties left. But I prefer the thesis that the films are simply getting better. More specifically, they're getting better written.

>Will these fine Marvel movies never stop?

 No.29662

>>29660

I would say he's essentially correct about all of that except the idea that the only value action scenes has comes from the characters, but I say that because I'm a big believer in aesthetics, and the ability to tell a story through action set pieces.

That, and I'm skeptical of the idea that you have to sell people on caring about iconic characters. They paid the 13 bucks to go see the Superman movie, they're aware that he's the main character. Being the main or title character already imparts significance to a character regardless of whatever else you do, and if you combine that with simple filming techniques you can sell someone as important and relatable without them ever having to say a word.

 No.29663

>>29661

This actually reminds me of how I initially felt about The Avengers in 2012. Blockbuster action movies had, by then, become so awful, so rote, and the characters were absolutely unlikable. There are no likable characters in the transformers movies, I know as I've seen them all. The Dark Knight trilogy was moody and well shot and full of interesting set pieces and character moments, but another way to describe it would be cold and dreary, with nothing but dark humor to grease the emotional wheels.

It's easy to forget now in the harsh light of day but back in the grim darkness of the late 2000s, early 2010s, campy and humorous superhero fare was seen as the past. The Dark Knight Trilogy had taken its characters deadly seriously and was praised, rightfully so, and ten years of any other approach had seemed to show that it was correct. In this time there was a Shazam script that was approaching production, and it suddenly got canned because Warner Brothers wanted to have a darker, more serious treatment. Of Captain Marvel.

Then, Avengers comes out and everybody in it is likable and funny. It doesn't matter how good or bad the story is, how flat or dynamic the characters are, they were fun to watch and be around, and that's where the MCU really dug its claws in and flipped the whole thing around. Audiences want good movies, but if they can't get them they'll settle for bad-but-entertaining. When a Warner Brothers/DC movie is bad, it's a bad action movie with melodrama. When a Disney/Marvel movie is bad, it's a bad action movie with comedy. Audiences will always chose comedy with bad action over melodrama with bad action.

>I was braced for a disaster when The Last Jedi came along. But it was simply terrific. It gripped me from the first moments when the good guys (the Resistance) are getting their asses kicked in a space battle.

>The Last Jedi is visually ravishing, and it's also expertly plotted. Whenever the Resistance seems about to succeed, they get knocked back. This gives the film a dark tone which is deliberately reminiscent of the second instalment of the first trilogy, The Empire Strikes Back (another favourite of mine)…Johnson brings a fresh and intriguing sensibility to the Star Wars canon.

>there is a lavishly wonderful ground battle on a snowy* world called Crait where the war machines gouge up streaks of bright red dirt as if the planet itself is bleeding.

>(*Yes, I now know it's not snow on the planet's surface but salt. But I don't give a shit.)
