RTDfag edition

Okay, this is epic

This place is the best whenever we actually talk about doctor who, if you try to start a genuine doctor who discussion others will follow, theres a huge amount of audiochads and bookchads here so we've got basically everything covered.

It's more off topic than usual because we got banned from 4chan and this everyones sort of reveling in the fact we have no mods, and because there hasnt been much recent stuff to discuss

File: 550b56fd34e03c1⋯.png (518.47 KB, 1024x682, 512:341, ReTarDs.png)

>i love RTD!!!!!!

whatever happened to those two /who/res who added me on steam aaaaaaaaages ago? pretty sure i unfriended both of you by accident when i purged my friends list of traders.

Neo, any ETA on when the Shit Trips 2.5 stuff you're doing (framing and compiling-wise) on about when will be ready? I'm still waiting for Nilso's stuff, btw.

Prog rock, like the trip Prog, should really fuck off. It has a pretentious air of pseudointellectuality that, perhaps, a few /who/res can relate to. I suggest putting a stethoscope to a trash can instead - it's about as good and reflects your personality equally well.

Radiohead is a boring waste of 9 good album covers. Perhaps, in the band's infancy, they should have chosen to become visual artists instead, but then nobody here (besides me) would be cultured enough to know who they are.

Bowie's music was nothing special or revolutionary.

Morrissey is a fascist piece of shit and no, you can't "separate the art from the artist" when you stream his music on Spotify, Youtube, or some more obscure streaming service which you desperate contrarians swear is better. You're giving him money. You're enabling him. This isn't even an issue for many of you - though it should be - because you sympathise with the fascist ideology.

Heavy metal is privileged white people screaming at nothing. Again, your enjoyment of this snow-white genre is inextricably linked to your fascist and racist sensibilities.

The same goes for Death Grips.

Noise "music" isn't music. It's just noise. Any enjoyment you get from it is an auditory placebo effect from it being labelled music.

ITT mediocre bait

Apparently, Series 11 will be filmed with anamorphic cameras. Thoughts, /who/?

I don't know what an anamorphic camera is.

Neither do I.

Apparently, it creates a widescreen image.

i am disgusted by nilso

they make flares look really cool

My major gripe with the Moffat era is the way he writes dialogue. The characters always sound so undeservedly smug and it really pisses me off

I picked a bad time to voice this opinion since there’s a bunch of people falseflagging as RTD fans but know that I dislike the cheesy campiness of his era too and I will come back at a time with fewer shitposters if I get mistaken for one of them.

i actually agree with this, it worked alright with 12 (i would assume partially due to the character and partially because of capal) but it got REALLY irritating with 11+amy and early clara too

I actually agree with you, though I think Clara was smugger in a different way than Amy. Amy's usually joking with 11, or using humor as a way to hide her stress. Clara's just very clever, and she knows it.

Unironically t. Hunter. Not the opinion, the writing style just makes me think it's him

>undeservedly smug

I think they deserve to be just a little smug for participating in Moffkino

If I were Hunter, I would have a trip so I could get more attention

File: 52b7171543f9b95⋯.png (398.1 KB, 736x637, 736:637, trump-of-the-land.png)

12 would have voted for drumpf

12 wouldn't have voted. 6 would have voted for Trump.

moff has a tendency to write character dialogue as if they're spouting poetry rather than talking like normal people.

There are places where it works (usually doctor monologues where he's meant to be trailing off), but there are many cases (particularly with clara and amy) where it just looks and sounds dumb

11 would be a die hard Hillary supporter.

11 is apolitical

10 would have been a hillary supporter

9 would have been a conscious abstainer

>moff has a tendency to write character dialogue as if they're spouting poetry rather than talking like normal people.

not only is this a meme criticism, it wouldn't be bad even if it was true. there's nothing wrong with having characters speak poetically. i would actually love to see a doctor who episode written in verse. supposedly The Crusade has a few scenes in iambic pentameter

9 would be happy to vote for anyone who isnt tony blair

>moff has a tendency to write character dialogue as if they're spouting poetry rather than talking like normal people.

>not only is this a meme criticism, it wouldn't be bad even if it was true. there's nothing wrong with having characters speak poetically. i would actually love to see a doctor who episode written in verse. supposedly The Crusade has a few scenes in iambic pentameter

10 would 100% support Donald Trump. They have so much in common.

9 would vote Bush and cry about it after Iraq

>10 would 100% support Donald Trump. They have so much in common.

Ten hate has gone too far.

9 is a filthy centrist.

nice post

i can totally see it. they're both egotistical, they gurn together, and they both LOVE much younger women

also they're both narcissists who pretend to have emotion

Donald Trunp would never apologise for anything so the analogy falls flat

File: c15e5eab91d2393⋯.png (346.5 KB, 770x231, 10:3, gurn.png)

which doctors would support israel and which would support palestine?

Yeah, it's a meme comparison. Ten's flaws and Trump's flaws are very different.

10 never apologizes genuinely, he just recites his scripted apology phrase

>it begins with a big action sequence

It literally doesn't.

batman falling down a well and being engulfed by bats is an action sequence sweetie

Neo, just let it go.

It doesn't begin with that either. It begins with a funeral.

I think im Nilso

Neo's on the verge of tears

my pronouns are nilso and nilsir

It's pretty good, bewilderingly and mercifully the main character is quip-free which really does help. The CGI is laughably bad, and the writers do some awkward things with the villain probably because he was making too much sense, but it's definitely an enjoyable movie, moreso than most in the series.

I love Polly Wright and when I grow up I’m going to marry her

Weekend after next I'd say. No soft launching.

muh naturalism

>Harrison Ford Did Not Attend The 'Solo' Premiere — And That's a Good Thing

i'll just wait to get my opinion from rlm :^)

With Tasha Lem's religion/the Papal Mainframe, did you get the impression the afterlife it talked about was like a regular religion (i.e. nobody knows if it was real or not) or some sci-fi thing where it was legit guaranteed? This is the line tripping me up

>The Church of the Papal Mainframe apologises for your death. The relevant afterlives have been notified.

What are your thoughts?

thought's on occham's razor?

File: 65e0dd46533755b⋯.jpg (19.72 KB, 260x202, 130:101, battlefield.jpg)

cartmel's idea of a big action sequence is sophie aldred shouting BOOM

I've gone into this before, but I think the original intention was for the Missy arc to be about the Papal Mainframe. Thus, Tasha Lem is in some regard a proto-Missy and her spaceship is therefore the Nethersphere.

Spent the past half hour reloading the last thread before I noticed the postcount.

idk but the tiny little Moff lore drops in that story are so good and thought-provoking even though they might as well be throwaway

referring specifically to the Silence as confessional priests here

immigrant's gyrating

my guess is that there were thousands of different groups creating life after death things ala missy and the thing from TUAT and they were talking about those, it only makes sense that a bunch of people would have that same idea

Yeah, the Testament (and, to an extent, the Tesselecta and the Thought-Mail echoes from Silence in the Library) really stand out as making this a motif of the Moffat era. I guess you could roll the Spoonheads into it too. People building afterlives because they want to be sure there is one. Fitting, in this era where that's actually a popular philosophy.

Oh shit that's brilliant. I wonder if the Papal Mainframe had their own version.

Novelisation when?

You should write a fic version of that sometime

Imagine a story about people inside one of those life after death things trying to start a revolution to shut down the program because they wanna know if there is ACTUALLY an afterlife, that'd be kino

Would the Papal Mainframe fit best as

a) kind of "coordinating" all the different afterlives, Testimony/Nethersphere/etc, a go-between between them

b) Having an artificial afterlife of its own as well

c) Being a bit more mystical and being, like regular Earth religions, vague on whether there's a real afterlife or not

Sounds like that'd be a good City of the Saved plotline.

How about one sect is "a", and the other "c".

>a) kind of "coordinating" all the different afterlives, Testimony/Nethersphere/etc, a go-between between them

That's kind of funny and cynical, so that one

I think in the final version of history it's more likely that Tasha Lem is post-library River than it is that she's a Missy disguise. How much of the Moffat "evil dominatrix" trope is him reusing archetypes and how much is him having to adjust scripts to fit actor availability is something I think is up for debate, actually. Series 8 only exists the way it does because of Matt Smith's somehow-unexpected departure, after all.

I think A is probably the most correct, they're an interfaith church if you recall. Headless Monks and Anglican Marines are very different faiths, not merely separate orders in the same faith.

Something vaguely like that happened in the last season of the X-Files. It was retarded.

all of the above, papal mainframe civil war to decide the direction of the group, you could have plotlines about conflicts between afterlives, maybe even conflicts between the same person but from different afterlives since they had 2 copies of their consciousness uploaded to 2 separate afterlives

> plotlines about conflicts between afterlives, maybe even conflicts between the same person but from different afterlives since they had 2 copies of their consciousness uploaded to 2 separate afterlives

That's super-kino.

In the judeo christian faith, there is a tradition of a purifying flame that a soul must pass through to enter heaven. In some interpretations this flame is limbo or even Hell itself.

Would it be possible to interpret it instead as your soul being torn in two, a good part that goes to heaven and a bad part that goes to hell?

So in heaven you see a tiny little dude walk by and you ask an angel, hey, why's that guy so small, and he says, "Oh, that's Hitler, the part of him that loved animals. The rest is down in hell, with the part of you that posted on 8chan."

woah i didnt even consider the hell aspect of this, i wonder if these simulated afterlives were based on morality in any way?

Who actually buys those 2L bottles of chocolate/strawberry milk at the shops? I like chocolate milk as much as the next guy but come on. It's too much. People really have that in their fridge?

Are you saying Moffat repeatedly ripped off the City of the Saved from Faction Paradox?

File: 45e7f9a4fee9193⋯.png (256.34 KB, 727x448, 727:448, 1492840874036.png)

It's not too much.

Yes, because Lawrence Miles invented the concept of an afterlife. Actually you Factionfags see him as a god so you probably think that's true.

I predict that both of you are overweight.

why does your name link to your email

Um sweaty, PHP came up with the City of the Saved. Not Lawrence Miles

take that however you want :^)

People with families. My grandparents used to regularly have at least one or two children and one or two grandchildren around and they always had a gallon of chocolate milk ready to go. God it goes well with honey bunches of oats.

The Nethersphere uses simulated moral and ethical dilemmas to provoke people into divesting themselves of emotions, if you remember. I'm positive that the Papal Mainframe, whether it's an afterlife or just a matchmaking service, probably has that as an option, or more likely a requirement to use their service. As for the Testimony, I actually can't remember if they say they only take good souls or not, that was the impression I had at the time but I might be wrong.

The spoonheads aren't really interested in the actual content of a soul, meanwhile, and the library is more like a haunting than a specific afterlife.

you would know all about taking things

You predict wrong. I can't even remember the last time I had a 2-litre bottle of flavoured milk. I'm just not a coward

If Neo was here right now he would criticise you all for your infantile enjoyment of a children's drink. Especially when you do it in such capitalist excess.

Neo's Australian. Flavoured milk isn't a "children's drink" here. You can get it in every bakery, service station, deli, etc. and it's largely marketing to working class men.

Which trips are more of a Yanny, and which trips are more of a Laurel…?

>a drink doesn’t kill your brain cells so it must be for children

>implying I'm not Australian too

This is a crock of shit.

>i'm so annoying blah blah blah

which trip am i

chocolate milk is just a cold hot chocolate which is just a better version of coffee. ergo it is not a children's drink

You’re anonymous *facepalm*

god I'm a dribbling retard I didn't realise we were in a new thread

>You're anonymous *facepalm*

which anon am i

Does trip hating anon count as a trip? If so I pick him.

Maybe if we made a new thread at 700 instead of letting it reach post limit. It took me more than 100 posts to realise a new thread had been made for the past two

I thought the thread was being slow as fuck

I declare that at 700 we conduct thread exodus. We shall be called… the 700 clubs.

This honestly. You guys are fucking terrible at getting the new thread in before 751. 700 is the way to go, that leaves some room for any excess posts.

700 mafia

Nothing I said is incorrect. Maybe you get different ads in your state

Apparently Doctor Who got SAVAGED on Australian Gogglebox. About to get the link

IIRC they showed them the series 9 premiere, not exactly a good jumping on point lmfao

The collision of Doctor Who and Australia will only be complete with an Australian Doctor. It makes perfect sense. They only exist because we shipped them into exile.

lads I'm gonna pop out to the shops, can I get anyone anything

Based Australians. First they keep the censored clips from the 60s instead of the actual episodes and now they shit on Moffat Who

Get me a protein shake and a work ethic.

The mods have banned links to Doctor Who General Wiki for breaking Rule 1: Don't be a dick. (The wiki was made by /who/ of 4Chan, so no surprise there…) but now I can't link to my favorite article:

10/08/2015 – The Doctor Who General Wiki begins recording dates on this page in MM/DD/YYYY format. Doctor Who dies. [This joke was funnier on the Doctor Who General Wiki]

there isnt actually a copy of that page on reddit right

I believe it may have been n8's influence that got reddit banned from linking to our wiki, in which case we should be grateful.

The stolen earth is NOT more fanwank than The Next Doctor.

Arguably the only reason to like The Next Doctor is for a fanwank-y chuckle

I never said it was

I said it was fanwank in the worst possible way, which can also apply to the next doctor

It's far worse than fanwank. It's normie wank. The kind of fanwank that normies understand because all of it is so mainstream. Basically the MCU of Who.

>Basically the MCU of Who.

Christ, you put exactly down it into words. That's a perfect analogy.

It was unironically really pleasant to come home from work and read a bunch of fascinating, interesting replies to a post I'd made in my break. Love all your thoughts.

Here's another thing: if hypothetically Tasha Lem was River (I'm sidestepping the debates about that she isn't, I'm just saying if she was), what could have motivated River - who was tortured and brainwashed by the Silents, as a child no less - to start/lead a church full of them?

File: 04759dc15450618⋯.jpg (112.63 KB, 631x745, 631:745, 1526558852404.jpg)

What are some Doctor Who episodes where the bad guys realise they're the bad guys?

Do you think Moff should have avoided "SHIT WE'RE ACTUALLY KILLING HITLER???" hook in lets kill hitler or there is actually some deeper meaning in this decision? Like, for example, some topics are guaranteed to be misunderstood or just to be shit in context of doctor who so it's okay just to mock them, but not actually plunge into them? Or something like that.

File: e25218b42efaea6⋯.jpg (68.63 KB, 980x490, 2:1, 1526350926743.jpg)

i bypassed the polarity of the neutron flow!

I don't think there was anything deeper to the Nazi setting than a gimmicky ratings grab type move if that's what you mean. God I hate that episode. Moff is normally so good at playing with lore elegantly, but stuff like Mels is so fucking horrid and grating. The Tesselecta was a cool idea though.

I think an episode making light of Hitler could be great but not the way that episode did it. Everything about the Nazi setting seemed like window dressing in it. Maybe that was the point.

I bypassed the character development!

Hitler could be replaced with any suitably infamous war criminal/dictator to serve the ep's themes, but they felt they could get away with Hitler because there is a British tradition of comedic takes on WW2 and the Nazis and that pairs with Moffat's "romantic comedy" theme for the episode.

>British tradition of comedic takes on WW2 and the Nazis

genuinely interested, can you expand on this

hey who…easy on the nilso

Yea I might've articulated my thoughts shoddily there.

Nazi setting had almost nothing to do with the themes or events in the episode, it might've been any other time period or setting with an evil leader. But episode is called "let's kill hitler" and it's a huge audience bait, but episode has nothing to do with the hitler or nazis. So my question was this: was there any intention (a commentary on clickbait titles from moff or something) or it was just because he thought it's cool to have rory hitting Hitler?

Talking Nilso, I had a dream today, it was literally God Complex but with Nilso Rivera instead of minotaur. And characters say "t. Nilso" instead of "praise him".

Anyone have the link to the new NIN song that leaked?

thoughts on up your arsenal online?

It's weird to think that Australians might not be aware of it. But yeah, there's always been a history of comedy Nazis in British media. There was going to be a sitcom called "Heil Honey I'm Home", about Hitler and Eva Braun living in a house next door to a Jewish couple. It was mysteriously cancelled after the first episode.

Well, Hitler is sort of the big cheese as far as famous dictators in recent Western history go. He has a huge presence in pop culture.

Moffat definitely wanted to create a clickbaity title that would stir up intrigue and get people chatting (plus he was probably going insane because S6 was a production disaster). And punching Hitler is a far bigger meme than punching out Stalin or something. It's a case of pushing the iconography to extremes to cover for the relatively small scale of the plot.

Also the jocular sound of the title indicates the irreverent tone of the ep in general.

Okay, this is epic. Total Lost Highway vibe and Trent is flat out trying to sound like Bowie. I assumed the EP would just be like Not the Actual Events but harder, but this is more interesting and different than what I expected. Kino.

Ah I think I get what you mean, I was thinking like Fawlty Towers. It suits Commonwealth type humour to make light of them like that I guess.

I absolutely hate bad wolf as a plot device after series 1. In series 1 they were there to inform you that even if something seemed small in the background that it was actually an important point that built upon the doctor and rose's friendship and their arc by expressing the importance of the story.

In series 2-4 it was only used after we knew a moment was important and was therefore hitting you over the head. Like "Oh, Rose Tyler has been thrown into another universe, the daleks and the cybermen just had a confrontation and we're in the series 2 finale. By the way incase you didnt know this was important HERE'S A BAD WOLF REFERENCE!".

It's maddening because Bad Wolf is supposed to (as a device) draw context to moments that werent as important before it was used, and yet afterwards it's used to hit you over the head with a stupid hammer to drive a point home. And if that sounds like I'm repeating my point it's because Bad Wolf.

Thanks babe.

I'm actually interested in this one.

They both portrayed aliens that launched disappointingly stupid invasions of earth and wanted to destroy humanity and the hero for keks instead of real motivation?

What do Rose, Sleep no More, Twin Peaks and TARDIS Eruditorum have in common?

Come on.

the correct answer is jesus symbolism

oh right is that why you were spamming over the other conversation

I really disliked this book. The main character made such really weird decisions which would obviously be detrimental to her, but still made them anyway and then blamed all of her problems on everyone else.

I wish you would just tell us.

They all feature transgender characters??

I don't think random grunt is meant to be transgender, just the actor

what's the transgender character in rose? Wasn't the transgender actor in SNM promoted as being the first trans character in the show?

Just letting you know I’m interested in the answer but too much of a brainlet to think of it

I do think the emphasis people put on Snyder's Superman/Jesus symbolism misses that he does plenty with other gods too, it's just less obvious because we're less culturally attuned to it

What the fuck?

Haven't read the book but that sounds like realistic behaviour to me lol

I guess the rationale is that the fact that she's trans is supposed to reflect her narcissism, superficiality or insecurity (or any combination of those traits)? From my perspective I just see the criticism as demanding that all trans-ness must be portrayed as altruistic or else it's problematic. What makes it even weirder is how sympathetic RTD tries to make Cassandra in that episode.

Caves of Androzani has an interesting moral question to it about revenge but since you specified well-seasoned I won't put it forward.

You may be able to sympathise with Jek to a degree but he's still a drug selling unhinged murderer.

>Why do you think that is?

Not that anon, but probably because most writers when writing an argument or conflict have their own opinion which informs the script usually pretty heavily because they want their work to have a tangible "message" or stance, and it's easier to do that by telegraphing it

you forgot rapey

It's so much more interesting / enjoyable when you can empathise with both character's stances imo.

>Why do you think that is?

Because Doctor Who tends to be a show about cartoon baddies and evil monsters, rather than rigorously worked out dilemmas where neither party is the designated asshole.

Strangely, the closest might actually be Androzani, where all the parties are assholes.

Yes. He plays a more intensely Scottish version of himself. He has some scenes in Season 2 with Tuppence Middleton and will also apparently make some kind of appearance in the upcoming series finale.

The cool thing with the other NewWho logos is they actually tied into specifcally Doctor Who concepts, the TARDIS in Smith's logo, the surfboard in RTD's. I almost wish the feminine symbol thing was intentional in Chibnall's because then it'd at least mean something.

1. I am happy for a woman to be cast and all but let's be real, there's no way the show isn't getting cancelled.

now a real answer

Nah m8. As long as merch sells and international streaming rights keep making them millions per episode, this show will exist. Its got the same sweet deal as Elementary: viewing figures dont matter anymore.

Do you seriously expect the public to embrace a female Doctor? S11 might have some artistic merit in its own right in the end, who knows, but we all know it was greenlit just so the BBC can look progressive before inevitably shutting it down.

The merch won't sell when it features a woman as the Doctor. All merchandise buyers care about is the male gender.

now a real answer

The BBC is enacting a mass psyop to feminise young boys and rob them of positive role models. Young boys are completely incapable of looking up to female characters, and this viewpoint is not sexist in the slightest.

Strawmanning the other side for sarcastic humour purposes is a reddit-tier strategy.

>My friend met Matt Fitton yesterday at Utopia convention and he has confirmed to her that liv chenka is bisexual as everyone in her time is bi as she is from the future and Helen from Doom coalition a lesbian.

This totally solves all the problems with Doom Coalition being a complete failure as serialized drama, right?

I mean, unless he's willing to put evidence of that in the stories, he's just JK-ing.

>everyone in her time is bi as she is from the future

How well thought through.

I'm sure Helen being a lesbian was made explicit at some point.

I'm leery of the viewpoint that bisexuality is some kind of organic societal endpoint for sexuality instead of just another sexuality as valid in its own right as any other. That's like "childhood is idolising heterosexuality/homosexuality, adulthood is realising bisexuality makes more sense" tier thinking. I understand the RTD level "there are tonnes more pan/bi/etc people in the future" thing, especially when aliens are in the mix, but "literally everyone is bi in the future" sounds less thought-through.

>he's just JK-ing

Giga? I was talking to a mate about the BBC's His Dark Materials upcoming adaptation today and he started scoffing heavily when it came up that Jack Thorne was showrunning it. I tried vainly to defend him a bit since I recalled you making points in his favour, but I couldn't really follow through with anything besides "Cursed Child was probably bad more because of JK!" :/

File: d4659d0b484caeb⋯.jpg (111.76 KB, 1280x720, 16:9, maxresdefault.jpg)

Ahgr BF's timeline handling of River is annoying. Her audios (her Diary spinoff and her appearances in Doom Coalition) realistically are set (in her timeline) post Husbands and pre Silence. This is because she has her sonic screwdriver, references the sonic trowel, and references 12 ("What's he come as? The MAGICIAN, the spiv, or the geography teacher?").

But come on…Husbands was clearly meant to lead directly into Silence. It's so much more poetic and stronger characterisation-wise. Her mucking around for a few years/decades after Husbands and occasionally having adventures with other Doctors seems so much less satisfying, especially when they would fit neater pre-Husbands before she'd had the magic, romantic ~24 years with the Doctor (don't erase those times, yadda yadda) she was so smitten by in Library.

Even if it doesn't though, we're about to see a giant surge in awareness, which means geek culture stores will carry a bunch of merch for an entire year, streaming will get a massive uptick as people go to "catch up" for the current doctor(which honestly will get the most revenue) and eu materials are going to get buys enough to launch new lines like tennant did(the eighth doctor adventures), like smith did(Briggs Finish trilogies in the main range, the lost stories and jago and litefoot) and capaldi did(the early adventures and the like)

I'm confused as to why you're acting like casting a woman hasn't tarnished the brand. There has never been a female science-fiction hero that has sold well.

I mean, he has won five Baftas.

The only adaptation of his I've seen was an amateur production of his Let The Right One In, which was actually good, a testament to the strength of the script considering the original production largely got hyped for its direction and visuals.

Anyone who actually looks at his track record, the acclaim he's had for his original work, etc. can see he's not a duff writer. Pottercancer is its own problem.

And That's The Problem

Horror, not science-fiction.

The rare moments when she gets any attention at all, it's revilement.

>itll get ridiculous attention

Chris "Cyberwoman" Chibnall has never written anything that's demanded notable attention from the public. Capaldi barely got any merchandising; a woman is going to do worse, not better. I like your take on casting Whittaker as a cynical publicity move to try and get any attention, positive or negative, but third-wave feminist takeovers of pop culture series is old hat by this point.

Yeah, before listening to any of the River boxsets I assumed they must have logically been set pre-Husbands. Fuck it, I may just headcanon it and insist that they are regardless of what BF thinks.

BF made their first River boxset before seeing Husbands, so there was probably some miscommunication between them and Moffat.

Either that, or they've simply given up trying to make Rive's timeline make sense.

"And This is a Good Thing!"

I wonder who did the bulk of the actual writing writing, like not the conceptualising or doing the story but the actual words-on-page writing for Cursed Child. It's credited to JK, Thorne, and John Tiffany jointly.

Are you hopeful for his showrunning of the HDM show?

BF arguably try to walk it back a bit in Diary S2 where iirc River mentions having built a sonic of her own at one point, but it's undercut by her literally mentioning 12 in Diary S1. BF were definitely in communication with Moff about Diary S1, he's talked about it, and inclusions like the sonic trowel are what they are, but yeah I feel like Moff either had the RTD attitude of "…just let them do whatever" (reading between the lines of RTD's comments on BF's actual scripts, like Torchwood's, can be fun), or there was some genuine miscommunication.

I'm leaning towards headcanonning it as pre-Husbands despite the evidence for the contrary, but I'm in need of an elegant way to handwave her mentioning 12 ("the magician") and having the sonic trowel. BF have already handled her having a sonic screwdriver already.

I think theres a small amount of ambiguity though: who's to say 12 didnt just occasionally pop off for some milk in those 24 years and then river had an adventure or two?

Ooh wait, so you're saying the audios aren't pre or post Husbands, but DURING?

Well… Kinda yeah. It would make that equally tragic too: the doctor goes to bed, then wakes up and "Holy shit what were you doing with my eighth self"

The trowel doesn't have to be post-Husbands, right? It could be post-Angels Take Manhattan but pre-Husbands. "Magician" could be an oblique reference to another Doctor.

And her answer would be "trying to understand you better"

But who would that even be? Captain Opera cape?

Science can be indistinguishable from magic.

What the fuck? I guess I can see that. Magician for…3? It can't be 6 or 7 because she hadn't encountered them yet at that point. Well at least 7. S2 sets up her first meeting with 7 but I can't remember if it's meant to be her first meeting with 6 too.

I don't like the idea of the 24 years having any tragedy in them, I like them as blissful. I'm open to them having adventures together in those years but River just fucking off to have adventures with other Doctors feels weird. Also it doesn't fit great tonally, I feel like she has a kind of wistful vibe towards some great spent of time with the Doctor, presumably in Husbands, in the audios but I guess you can handwave that.

File: d3de05aeda8edf1⋯.jpg (8.5 KB, 480x360, 4:3, doinks.jpg)

>Are you hopeful for his showrunning of the HDM show?

I imagine it will turn out at least decent. I haven't actually read HDM I should point out, I think I started The Northern Lights years and years ago but I can't remember if I finished it, so I'm not waiting with bated breath for the tv series.

Give me a legitimate character reason why Davros would want to destroy all of reality other than HIGHER STAKES

>I haven't actually read HDM

What the fuck? It's like the one "YA" series with genuine artistic merit. Snuffed the religion out of a load of kids. Northern Lights is far and away the worst in the series (I like it but it's just fantasy), it's the set-up so Pullman can pull the big narrative substitution in the second book before the weighty theological stuff in the third. I imagine the TV show will homogenise all the separate tones together a bit though. The BBC is into atheism these days isn't it?

>Rose is going to die!

Muh "he went insane in the Time War or some shit".

Alternatively you could compare it to the Time Lords wanting to get rid of everything except themselves.

All I want from Chibnall is good character moments and a decent understanding of the Doctor Who universe. Just anything as long as he doesn't pull the ratings grab shit that RTD did.

>All I want from Chibnall is good

And that's where you screwed up

>as long as he doesn't pull the ratings grab shit that RTD did.

I'm afraid that ship's already sailed with his casting *<);oÞ

He dislikes other species and deleting everyone at once seems reasonable enough

Except Donna gets completely reversed to the point where she knows nothing about the Doctor and forgets about all special things she did. Which is, metaphorically, the dead of Donna as we know her in the show.

True, but it's out-of-universe and isn't exactly going to change much about character interactions.

Donna's fate is arguably worse than death.

That makes sense. But you know those seeds weren't planted for artistic effect since RTD has said he'd much rather have literal stuff than metaphors.

Hell Bent drama in the Blind Wave comment section

I'm sorry; I have no idea what you mean. Donna hating her fate is explicit, she doesn't consent to it and she tells 10 to his face how she doesn't want it as he does it to her. Wilf then explicitly points out why it's so bad later in the episode.

I'm saying I completely agree with you from a character standpoint, but the prophecy stuff earlier in the series was done more for ratings than metaphor purposes.

You know, ive spent some time thinking about the series 4 character arcs and ive realized something: its not about donna, its about 10. Davies wipes donna because she changes very little over the arc and it wasnt about her. It was about 10 learning to just be the doctor again without pining over rose and trying to snog everything that moves. It was about adventure and taking responsibility for 10 and his arc.

Its shit because he coulda done that without erasing donna's mind, but whatever. RTD a hack.

>Davies wipes donna because she changes very little over the arc and it wasnt about her

I disagree with this, I think some grappling with Donna's S4 arc happens because it's an outright tragedy and that's rare in Doctor Who, but that doesn't make it creatively bankrupt (I'd say the opposite really, give or take EOT softening the blow). Donna grew and became a better person and flew too close to the sun in the end and wasn't just killed for it, she was undone. That's a sad story. Doesn't make it a bad story. It fits quite nicely in a finale about people grappling about what their natures allow them (10 isn't allowed himself domestic bliss with Rose, Rose isn't allowed a life with a Time Lord, meta10 isn't allowed the life of a Time Lord, nor is Donna. At least meta10 gets to keep his mind).

I think we've gotten two conversations mixed up, I remember the McGanon asexual drama vividly (it was born out of a discussion we'd been having separately first), ((and for the record I'm "on her side", people misinterpreted what she was saying))I was referring to the anti-Semitic /who/re among us presently (((who is definitely not McGanon))).

I sympathise with some guys who have trouble with women but yeesh, you gotta try, and listen, not just…wait. Although some people do have the perfect partner basically fall into their lap. Super rare and nobody should ever count on that though.

Oh fuck I even forgot about Judy

The ideas about how I thought relationships worked even 5 or 6 years ago are in comparison such a bizarre and strange thing that I can't even believe I ever thought it worked like that.

cursed image

Was it in reference to John Carpenter or JJ Abrams?

The thing I miss about /who/ on /tv/ is that stuff actually happened. Sure we're having conversations on threads, but there's no big events or dramas or anything

Are you talking about Nilso

What is the Doctor Who equivalent of this situation?

Someone less internet slutty than me would say And That's A Good Thing.

I'm sure we both know that's a very fucking healthy thing. Cringing on past behaviour, especially relationship behaviour, means we've grown up more and improved ourselves. Here's to making new mistakes to cringe at in years to come…

Speaking of, I have actually had conflict in relationships before over identifying as "weird" or "normal". I've been on both sides of the argument with different people.

Wew it probably wasn't me then.

Also I think to a degree internal drama has been negated by external drama (/who/ getting banned, wiki troubles, etc.). We did have drama with the Discord divide but that's more or less died down.

So, you like They Live too, then?

Depends what you mean by "kid" - do you mean young child ranging from 5 to 10, or do you mean someone ranging from 7-12/13

Love and Monsters

Okay, but I'll accept that as a temporary tradeoff if it means we don't get 'events' like Darth Snoke again.

That's a tad optimistic.

What is the Doctor Who equivalent of this?

I'm more referring to stuff like the Gallifrey Base fake spoiler wars.

I'd probably not be the best person to answer this question since the stories I enjoyed the most when I was about 7 or 8 were the scary ones (for reference they were Pyramids of Mars, Timelash, Ghost Light, Curse of Fenric and Survival). I was quite afraid of The Borad's face prosthetic make up because I thought it looked realistic as fuck at the time. I also remember being afraid of The Seeds of Death because I'm fairly claustrophobic and I can point out about 4 or 5 dreams I've had about being chased by an Ice Warrior in a really confined maze.

Oh. Uh, forget I said anything.

meant for >>30210

Things like that are extremely rare and not really contingent on us being on /tv/. (Funnily enough I seem to remember Cloi and pals doing some of their fake spoiler plotting on here in secret.)

Guys. This just happened and my stomach is still woozy.

(I was adopted at birth, never been in contact with or met my biological mother) So I'm on Facebook and decide to look up my birth mother for the first time in a few months. I am 99% sure I know who she is from information from my birth father who I have met a few years back, but I have never reached out to her. Tonight was the night that I would finally just introduce myself and see if I ever get a response.

So I am writing out a little blurb, introducing myself, trying to keep it light. I keep cutting and pasting my message out of habit, going back and forth on whether or not to actually send it.

Well… at this same time, I am snapping a screenshot of a domino's pizza order for completely unrelated reasons. Apparently the snipping tool replaced my clipboard with the image of my order, so when I hit cntrl+v, I suddenly watch as I send a random pizza order screenshot to my birth mother (without any confirmation to prevent this from Facebook!).

My stomach hits the floor, so my brain immediately decides that I need to just go with it. So I give some response that basically was like 'wow that was weird, oops lol, btw hey I'm your son'.

I don't think I will ever sleep again.

Well I mean people CAN get crazy at auctions and overspend by leaps and bounds if they decide to get into a pissing contest with another bidder. I could see a hartnell era original production tardis commanding that value.

what are some doctor who eps which feel super uninspired and dead from the start

No, but sometimes while commuting I find myself thinking about the word Nilso.

The Doctor which represents you the least.

If you call for /who/ posts not to be written by SJWs and you visibly define anyone who's a woman, queer, or a person of color as a SJW then you are calling for /who/ posts entirely by straight white men and are a Nilso supremacist.

I'm so fucking bored.

Would you consider /who/ pre-the EOT stream (Nilso getting his name) the "origin story"? Would you be offended if a superheroic cinema adaption of /who/ omitted those origin years?

Are you literally Nicholas Briggs?

Benefits of this -

A) Mileage of the old Dalek models

B) Easy filming locations with no need to go abroad

C) Relatively easy frame to work with in terms of setting/characters/visuals/story/locations

I won't be offended when the eventual adaptation omits this entire Nilso fad.

Because the idea is uninspired and lacklustre or because I'm talentless

It's been over a year

yes but you all only started intensely forcing it beyond all reason/spamming entire threads to death with it in the last few months

Is this beginning of Nilso civil war?

I think you're looking back on earlier months wise rose-coloured glasses. Nilso spam was intense in the early days.

Just disappear mysteriously and return under a new name. It worked for a certain other /who/re. Multiple times.

Time flies when you're posting t. Nilso

t. Nilso

Lym posted about how there are about 15 full pages worth of Nilso-posts from /tv/ alone just before we got banned

Because something set during the Dalek invasion of Earth with everybody dying at the end is exactly the kind of spinoff Briggs would write.

if nilso was suddenly erased from time who would people post about instead?

hell it worked for Terry Nation and Blake's 7, depending on how you lean on the ending

It's over forty pages. The archive won't even go back to April 2017, when it started.

Just use date parameters.

By the way, there's only 16 pages of results for 2017, as opposed to the 40+ for 2018, which lends credence to my theory that you all started to sperg out about it in the last few months specifically.

I still maintain that at least 4/10 of all of these posts is either Cats, Kinda or someone else
