This place is the best whenever we actually talk about doctor who, if you try to start a genuine doctor who discussion others will follow, theres a huge amount of audiochads and bookchads here so we've got basically everything covered.

It's more off topic than usual because we got banned from 4chan and this everyones sort of reveling in the fact we have no mods, and because there hasnt been much recent stuff to discuss

 No.29693

Neo, any ETA on when the Shit Trips 2.5 stuff you're doing (framing and compiling-wise) on about when will be ready? I'm still waiting for Nilso's stuff, btw.

 No.29694

Prog rock, like the trip Prog, should really fuck off. It has a pretentious air of pseudointellectuality that, perhaps, a few /who/res can relate to. I suggest putting a stethoscope to a trash can instead - it's about as good and reflects your personality equally well.

 No.29695

Radiohead is a boring waste of 9 good album covers. Perhaps, in the band's infancy, they should have chosen to become visual artists instead, but then nobody here (besides me) would be cultured enough to know who they are.

 No.29696

Bowie's music was nothing special or revolutionary.

 No.29697

Morrissey is a fascist piece of shit and no, you can't "separate the art from the artist" when you stream his music on Spotify, Youtube, or some more obscure streaming service which you desperate contrarians swear is better. You're giving him money. You're enabling him. This isn't even an issue for many of you - though it should be - because you sympathise with the fascist ideology.

 No.29698

Heavy metal is privileged white people screaming at nothing. Again, your enjoyment of this snow-white genre is inextricably linked to your fascist and racist sensibilities.

 No.29699

 No.29708

My major gripe with the Moffat era is the way he writes dialogue. The characters always sound so undeservedly smug and it really pisses me off

I picked a bad time to voice this opinion since there’s a bunch of people falseflagging as RTD fans but know that I dislike the cheesy campiness of his era too and I will come back at a time with fewer shitposters if I get mistaken for one of them.

 No.29709

i actually agree with this, it worked alright with 12 (i would assume partially due to the character and partially because of capal) but it got REALLY irritating with 11+amy and early clara too

I've gone into this before, but I think the original intention was for the Missy arc to be about the Papal Mainframe. Thus, Tasha Lem is in some regard a proto-Missy and her spaceship is therefore the Nethersphere.

 No.29756

>>29755

Yeah, the Testament (and, to an extent, the Tesselecta and the Thought-Mail echoes from Silence in the Library) really stand out as making this a motif of the Moffat era. I guess you could roll the Spoonheads into it too. People building afterlives because they want to be sure there is one. Fitting, in this era where that's actually a popular philosophy.

>>29755

Imagine a story about people inside one of those life after death things trying to start a revolution to shut down the program because they wanna know if there is ACTUALLY an afterlife, that'd be kino

 No.29759

Would the Papal Mainframe fit best as

a) kind of "coordinating" all the different afterlives, Testimony/Nethersphere/etc, a go-between between them

b) Having an artificial afterlife of its own as well

c) Being a bit more mystical and being, like regular Earth religions, vague on whether there's a real afterlife or not

Sounds like that'd be a good City of the Saved plotline.

 No.29761

>a) kind of "coordinating" all the different afterlives, Testimony/Nethersphere/etc, a go-between between them

That's kind of funny and cynical, so that one

 No.29762

>>29757

I think in the final version of history it's more likely that Tasha Lem is post-library River than it is that she's a Missy disguise. How much of the Moffat "evil dominatrix" trope is him reusing archetypes and how much is him having to adjust scripts to fit actor availability is something I think is up for debate, actually. Series 8 only exists the way it does because of Matt Smith's somehow-unexpected departure, after all.

>>29759

I think A is probably the most correct, they're an interfaith church if you recall. Headless Monks and Anglican Marines are very different faiths, not merely separate orders in the same faith.

In the judeo christian faith, there is a tradition of a purifying flame that a soul must pass through to enter heaven. In some interpretations this flame is limbo or even Hell itself.

Would it be possible to interpret it instead as your soul being torn in two, a good part that goes to heaven and a bad part that goes to hell?

So in heaven you see a tiny little dude walk by and you ask an angel, hey, why's that guy so small, and he says, "Oh, that's Hitler, the part of him that loved animals. The rest is down in hell, with the part of you that posted on 8chan."

>>29767

The Nethersphere uses simulated moral and ethical dilemmas to provoke people into divesting themselves of emotions, if you remember. I'm positive that the Papal Mainframe, whether it's an afterlife or just a matchmaking service, probably has that as an option, or more likely a requirement to use their service. As for the Testimony, I actually can't remember if they say they only take good souls or not, that was the impression I had at the time but I might be wrong.

The spoonheads aren't really interested in the actual content of a soul, meanwhile, and the library is more like a haunting than a specific afterlife.

It was unironically really pleasant to come home from work and read a bunch of fascinating, interesting replies to a post I'd made in my break. Love all your thoughts.

Here's another thing: if hypothetically Tasha Lem was River (I'm sidestepping the debates about that she isn't, I'm just saying if she was), what could have motivated River - who was tortured and brainwashed by the Silents, as a child no less - to start/lead a church full of them?

 No.29888

Do you think Moff should have avoided "SHIT WE'RE ACTUALLY KILLING HITLER???" hook in lets kill hitler or there is actually some deeper meaning in this decision? Like, for example, some topics are guaranteed to be misunderstood or just to be shit in context of doctor who so it's okay just to mock them, but not actually plunge into them? Or something like that.

I don't think there was anything deeper to the Nazi setting than a gimmicky ratings grab type move if that's what you mean. God I hate that episode. Moff is normally so good at playing with lore elegantly, but stuff like Mels is so fucking horrid and grating. The Tesselecta was a cool idea though.

I think an episode making light of Hitler could be great but not the way that episode did it. Everything about the Nazi setting seemed like window dressing in it. Maybe that was the point.

Hitler could be replaced with any suitably infamous war criminal/dictator to serve the ep's themes, but they felt they could get away with Hitler because there is a British tradition of comedic takes on WW2 and the Nazis and that pairs with Moffat's "romantic comedy" theme for the episode.

Yea I might've articulated my thoughts shoddily there.

Nazi setting had almost nothing to do with the themes or events in the episode, it might've been any other time period or setting with an evil leader. But episode is called "let's kill hitler" and it's a huge audience bait, but episode has nothing to do with the hitler or nazis. So my question was this: was there any intention (a commentary on clickbait titles from moff or something) or it was just because he thought it's cool to have rory hitting Hitler?

It's weird to think that Australians might not be aware of it. But yeah, there's always been a history of comedy Nazis in British media. There was going to be a sitcom called "Heil Honey I'm Home", about Hitler and Eva Braun living in a house next door to a Jewish couple. It was mysteriously cancelled after the first episode.

 No.29902

>>29896

Well, Hitler is sort of the big cheese as far as famous dictators in recent Western history go. He has a huge presence in pop culture.

Moffat definitely wanted to create a clickbaity title that would stir up intrigue and get people chatting (plus he was probably going insane because S6 was a production disaster). And punching Hitler is a far bigger meme than punching out Stalin or something. It's a case of pushing the iconography to extremes to cover for the relatively small scale of the plot.

Also the jocular sound of the title indicates the irreverent tone of the ep in general.

 No.29903

https://clyp.it/jnbrqbn2/widget

Okay, this is epic. Total Lost Highway vibe and Trent is flat out trying to sound like Bowie. I assumed the EP would just be like Not the Actual Events but harder, but this is more interesting and different than what I expected. Kino.

>>29901

Ah I think I get what you mean, I was thinking like Fawlty Towers. It suits Commonwealth type humour to make light of them like that I guess.

 No.29904

I absolutely hate bad wolf as a plot device after series 1. In series 1 they were there to inform you that even if something seemed small in the background that it was actually an important point that built upon the doctor and rose's friendship and their arc by expressing the importance of the story.

In series 2-4 it was only used after we knew a moment was important and was therefore hitting you over the head. Like "Oh, Rose Tyler has been thrown into another universe, the daleks and the cybermen just had a confrontation and we're in the series 2 finale. By the way incase you didnt know this was important HERE'S A BAD WOLF REFERENCE!".

It's maddening because Bad Wolf is supposed to (as a device) draw context to moments that werent as important before it was used, and yet afterwards it's used to hit you over the head with a stupid hammer to drive a point home. And if that sounds like I'm repeating my point it's because Bad Wolf.

I'm sure Helen being a lesbian was made explicit at some point.

I'm leery of the viewpoint that bisexuality is some kind of organic societal endpoint for sexuality instead of just another sexuality as valid in its own right as any other. That's like "childhood is idolising heterosexuality/homosexuality, adulthood is realising bisexuality makes more sense" tier thinking. I understand the RTD level "there are tonnes more pan/bi/etc people in the future" thing, especially when aliens are in the mix, but "literally everyone is bi in the future" sounds less thought-through.

Ahgr BF's timeline handling of River is annoying. Her audios (her Diary spinoff and her appearances in Doom Coalition) realistically are set (in her timeline) post Husbands and pre Silence. This is because she has her sonic screwdriver, references the sonic trowel, and references 12 ("What's he come as? The MAGICIAN, the spiv, or the geography teacher?").

But come on…Husbands was clearly meant to lead directly into Silence. It's so much more poetic and stronger characterisation-wise. Her mucking around for a few years/decades after Husbands and occasionally having adventures with other Doctors seems so much less satisfying, especially when they would fit neater pre-Husbands before she'd had the magic, romantic ~24 years with the Doctor (don't erase those times, yadda yadda) she was so smitten by in Library.

Even if it doesn't though, we're about to see a giant surge in awareness, which means geek culture stores will carry a bunch of merch for an entire year, streaming will get a massive uptick as people go to "catch up" for the current doctor(which honestly will get the most revenue) and eu materials are going to get buys enough to launch new lines like tennant did(the eighth doctor adventures), like smith did(Briggs Finish trilogies in the main range, the lost stories and jago and litefoot) and capaldi did(the early adventures and the like)

>>30122

>>30123

BF arguably try to walk it back a bit in Diary S2 where iirc River mentions having built a sonic of her own at one point, but it's undercut by her literally mentioning 12 in Diary S1. BF were definitely in communication with Moff about Diary S1, he's talked about it, and inclusions like the sonic trowel are what they are, but yeah I feel like Moff either had the RTD attitude of "…just let them do whatever" (reading between the lines of RTD's comments on BF's actual scripts, like Torchwood's, can be fun), or there was some genuine miscommunication.

I'm leaning towards headcanonning it as pre-Husbands despite the evidence for the contrary, but I'm in need of an elegant way to handwave her mentioning 12 ("the magician") and having the sonic trowel. BF have already handled her having a sonic screwdriver already.

I'm open to them having adventures together in those years but River just fucking off to have adventures with other Doctors feels weird. I disagree with this, I think some grappling with Donna's S4 arc happens because it's an outright tragedy and that's rare in Doctor Who, but that doesn't make it creatively bankrupt (I'd say the opposite really, give or take EOT softening the blow). Donna grew and became a better person and flew too close to the sun in the end and wasn't just killed for it, she was undone. That's a sad story. Doesn't make it a bad story. It fits quite nicely in a finale about people grappling about what their natures allow them (10 isn't allowed himself domestic bliss with Rose, Rose isn't allowed a life with a Time Lord, meta10 isn't allowed the life of a Time Lord, nor is Donna. At least meta10 gets to keep his mind).

I was quite afraid of The Borad's face prosthetic make up because I thought it looked realistic as fuck at the time. Guys. This just happened and my stomach is still woozy.

(I was adopted at birth, never been in contact with or met my biological mother) So I'm on Facebook and decide to look up my birth mother for the first time in a few months. I am 99% sure I know who she is from information from my birth father who I have met a few years back, but I have never reached out to her. Tonight was the night that I would finally just introduce myself and see if I ever get a response.

So I am writing out a little blurb, introducing myself, trying to keep it light. I keep cutting and pasting my message out of habit, going back and forth on whether or not to actually send it.

Well… at this same time, I am snapping a screenshot of a domino's pizza order for completely unrelated reasons. Apparently the snipping tool replaced my clipboard with the image of my order, so when I hit cntrl+v, I suddenly watch as I send a random pizza order screenshot to my birth mother (without any confirmation to prevent this from Facebook!).

My stomach hits the floor, so my brain immediately decides that I need to just go with it. So I give some response that basically was like 'wow that was weird, oops lol, btw hey I'm your son'.

I don't think I will ever sleep again.

Sure thing. I won't continually spam entries. What template do you use for /who/nger games again, 24/36 or 48?

 No.30378

>>30377

24. We can save 48 for the end of Season 2 so we can pit all /who/nger games winners together.

>>30378

If it's 24 I'll limit myself to 1 entry.

That wasn't me, that was TheOncomingStorm. At least I'm 90 percent sure that it was, he might not be subscribed to their patreon anymore, now. He's a cool guy and you shouldn't call him soy for it. Incidentally, I AM subscribed now, but I definitely wasn't back when I made that copypasta. Just saying

Yeah it was pretty chilling. Britain was *this* close to remaining a white ethno-state. Thank Allah you were saved from that nightmare.
