Yeahh, I was gonna make a copy of the list with the wiki-related entries removed, then stick it on the r/doctorwho wiki (since hey, we plagiarized it from BleedingCool who plagiarized it from MySpace, right?) but that redditor jumped the gun in a horrible way. Which describes most of his posts, really.

Consider that, in the years immediately before her death, the Doctor becomes more and more reluctant to meet with her, wondering each time if it will be their last. Then take the "loving the Doctor is impossible" feelings from "Husbands of River Song", turn them up to a hundred with some added bitterness, and you have a very unstable recipe.

Can't wait for Briggs Finish to base an entire four-part crossover boxset around fixing this error. "Timelines of River Song", complete with "dating controversy" puns. I can hardly contain my anticipation.

I sort of get the guy who said that you're hardly going to get a "neutral, objective opinion on anything when you have a BBC member of staff on this panel" but then again that's a really daft thing to say since no fan will ever be 100% fence-sitting neutral on anything about Doctor Who since anyone can literally have any opinion on it at all.

> I'm sorry, but the show has gone downhill. It's no longer about the story. It's about the fans wanting fame, it's about society and "getting even" and now this it seems sure spells out they are only after the profits. I for one am waiting for the next regeneration in which they go back to the story, and not the tangents being forced into production.

Then, I went to bed, got up the next morning, and saw a funny video on youtube and – I thought – copied that URL to share with some friends on IRC. Instead, I posted a link to child pornography with some fucking horrible additional comment like "Ha ha, look at this loser" or something.

Thankfully, Tumblr had taken the blog down during the few hours I was asleep. Otherwise, that would have been a disaster.

>1. "Toxic", Britney Spears

>Amazingly, TMF seems to have got it right: this probably *is* the best pop record of the year, which is something I find intensely irritating. My view - and up until 2004, it's held firm - is that one of the biggest problems with modern pop is the way obvious one-hit wonders are now allowed to have "careers". The trouble started in 1998, with B*Witched and Doctor Who's New Assistant. "C'est la Vie" was one of the all-time great "stupid" pop records, and "Because We Want To" was hideous but understandable… but both parties responsible were then allowed to make a string of follow-up records, many of which got into the Top Ten simply because falling single sales made it so easy for anyone with a minor teen following to become a repeat offender. Still, both Billie and B*witched at least had limited half-lives. ("Half-life" seems a reasonable term, because you can never be sure that *any* pop star has completely gone away, even after death. Like nuclear waste, burying them under concrete simply isn't good enough.) Then in 1999 came "Baby One More Time", which was quite blisteringly great - not for ironic, post-modern reasons, but for old-fashioned ones like "sounding really, really good" - but which also saddled us with Doctor Moreau's idea of a prom queen, an unnecessarily homespun girl-woman who wouldn't go away and wouldn't stop making inadequate follow-ups. Come the start of 2004, Britney Spears had been going for five sodding *years* without a decent follow-up; her attempts to be "dangerous" were becoming painful to watch; even the thirteen-year-olds could see through the cynicism of the lezzing-up-with-Madonna process; and it looked as if we were finally going to be shot of her. And then… "Toxic". Damn it to hell. This at least has the distinction of being the only pop single of 2004 that I actually bought (I nearly went for "The Show" as well, but the B-side was a remix of Girls Aloud's version of "Jump", and I've got still *some* standards), and it felt like sleeping with the enemy even then. Or licking around the enemy's areolae a bit, at least.

You've never related to fascism? I think stereotyping and externalising hate onto groups different than you is a much more intuitive and understandable notion than subsuming yourself to an unemotional, unfeeling hivemind. That's a lot more cerebral. Maybe it rings more true to depressed people, but I imagine most can relate more to the hatred and prejudice of the Daleks. People intellectually understand the Cybermen just fine but I don't think many people feel emotionally attuned to them. Maybe I'm wrong.

The wish to continue your society after war is a fine thing but it's how they go about in doing it . One of the reasons I like Genesis is that it shows that not every Kaled was a carbon-copy turbo Hitler who wanted to destroy genetically inferior things. The question you should be asking is do you include Davros in the Daleks or do you view them separately?

 No.30778

There's no reason at all why the kind of physical and mental enhancements used by Cybermen would entail the elimination of emotions or the enforcement of some kind of hivemind, and it's pretty lame and reactionary that Doctor Who always treats these things as if they're inextricable.

 No.30779

>>30774

Doctor Who is very one step forward two steps back in a lot of ways. A protagonist that generally tries to solve things through empathy and intellect instead of violence or domination is neat, writing SF concepts nearly exclusively as conflicts to be overcome is not. A lot of this is a function of the show still coasting off the same structure it was using in the 60s, like the only way an episode can work is to pepper a monster into a kooky setting and have the Doctor deal with it. What if a story dreamed of becoming something other than what rote received wisdom about Doctor Who intended? What if a story aspired to something greater?

>>30775

I should rephrase; tendencies which drive and meld with fascism (like projecting and externalising issues onto groups with categorical differences from yourself, hell, even just inclination to preservation of some sort of culture you belong to) are more common than wanting to undergo prodigious ego death and surrender your identity to an artificial hivemind that doesn't really exist in any form yet. This is more of the recent decades take on the Cybermen though, if we were talking Tenth Planet it'd be closer.

>>30777

I always take Davros discretely from the Daleks. Davros+the Daleks is a separate thing thematically from just the Daleks, as all the Dalek stories pre Genesis demonstrate, and some post as well (like Jubilee, effectively the final thesis on Daleks, which has nothing to do with Davros or what he represents).

>>30778

100%. Exploring that is much more difficult than having the Doctor chased down a corridor by a spooky man in a suit though.

 No.30780

There's a bit of that in WEAT/TDF, though the screentime is divided between it and grand statements on the Master instead. Though it's kind of fun to look at all the Master stuff as being indirectly about the Cybermen, or vice versa, considering he creates them in the very same episode.

I don't see an enormously meaningful distinction between the NewWho Cybermen and the post Tenth Planet Cybermen honestly, when you get past the aesthetics (clank clank, Iron Man, etc.). Maybe I'm misguided there though. I do really enjoy Saward's blasé violent tendencies with them. I like that style a lot in general. I unironically think thoughtless violence is a good mode for Who to operate in.

>>30783

Yeah I do like yours better. What do you think RTD and Moff's default modes are?

>>30784

Nah. It's great but I don't really think it's saying anything new about them, it's "just" extrapolating implications from The Tenth Planet and dramatising them really well.

>>30785

It's weird because we've had multiple influential writers (Saward, Moff, etc.) with a thing for using them frequently, but nobody really seems to delve really deep into them. Everyone loves the obvious observations you can make about the concept of them but for some reason people don't dig that much deeper, whereas people constantly flounder away trying to do that for the Daleks (mostly unsuccessfully, but they do try).

There's a bit of it but I think it's mostly used more like a prop to make a comment on the Doctor; the declaring-victories-against-them-while-blowing-them-up sequence is the big example. Actually you know what, the rooftop conversation really is going for making a big declaration about them, I'm selling the episode/s a bit short. What Moff did with them there is my favourite thing done with the Cybermen since basically forever.

>MISSY: The whole city is a machine to turn people into Cybermen. What do you think? Exciting, isn't it? Watching the Cybermen getting started.

>THE DOCTOR: They always get started. They happen everywhere there's people. Mondas, Telos, Earth, Planet 14, Marinus. Like sewage and smartphones and Donald Trump, some things are just inevitable.

That's such an elegant and meaningful bit of lorework. I'm going to miss Moffat so much, he has such a rare gift for that, and it's something Who benefits from so much.

 No.30788

Gary Russell and Moffat both like mixing and tying together bits of lore, "making things make more sense", but where Gary does it very workmanlike, happy with connections as long as they're mechanically sound, Moff either deploys them as a gag (usually a meta self-deprecating comment about fandom) or tries to make a meaningful comment on characters or Who lore with them.

There's not much you can do with Cybermen, since they're sort of stuck in an evolutionary niche. Daleks are xenophobia, they're always relevant, but the question the Cybermen were designed to answer (what will happen as technology integrates with humanity) is more pertinent now than ever, while the answer "we'll become soulless cyborgs intent on eradicating emotion" is stuck right in the 1960s. While cyberpunk and all sorts of stuff were happening, the classic show never updated the Cybermen and by Silver Nemesis they were just evil alien invaders like any other. Going back to their origins was the best thing BF could do and they did it excellently in Spare Parts.

I think as a relaunch, Rise of the Cybermen had the right idea in principle: have a clean slate, take Spare Parts as a basis and figure out how the Cybermen would evolve in today's society. It could have been great, but something went wrong and RTD and MacRae ended up making a B-movie with big stomping robots, and for the rest of RTD's era they remained like that. Just for a comparison, the first couple of NuWho series aired around the same time as Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, which has more interesting things to say about humanity and technology than all the Cybermen stories in NuWho, and it's not some kind of masterpiece, it's just a solid cyberpunk anime. Or think Battlestar Galactica.

Neil Gaiman seemed to realize there was a problem with Cybermen, but the way he found to fix it - do a Tomb riff and dial their powerlevel up to 11 - was horrible. Moffat's solution in the Capaldi era - focus on the body horror and the emotional impact of conversion - made for better episodes but still didn't fix the issue (notice how he still needed the Master as a speaking antagonist alongside them both times).

I think to make the Cybermen live up to their potential, you'd have to find a way to redesign them from scratch to be relevant today, while still keeping them recognizably Cybermen. You'd need a proper sci-fi writer, and a really good one to boot. Maybe Mortimore could do it if he was asked, he has the sci-fi background.

 No.30795

>>30793

Clanky "delete" Cybermen are irredeemable, but conniving bloodthirsty moustache-twirling Cybermen are hilarious in a good way. Earthshock is one of the few 5 stories even I'll say is great, and they're a huge part of why.

>>30794

Morrison offered up a more interesting take on the Cybermen 31 years ago and as far as I can tell literally nobody has taken it up apart from a couple of obsessives wonkily headcanoning TDF to fit it.

GITS SAC is one of the few anime I've seen funnily enough. It wasn't really my thing though I could recognise why it's popular. I love the Oshii movies though, particularly the second one.

Gaiman was in fan mode too much, his original idea (fuse the Classic and New Cybermen) had more potential to actually say something about them but in the end all he really had was trying to make them scare kids again, and the director fucked that up.

I think Moff redefined them (to an extent) in a properly interesting way on the rooftop - making the Cybermen a case of convergent evolution was brilliant imo, making them more of an interesting commentary on not just "human" nature but inevitabilities of technological progress, endless marching towards the singularity, instead of endless lore contortions that even Gaiman probably would have failed to make especially interesting - but WEAT/TDF was busy with a lot of other things. Bill's Cybermen body horror stuff was good but falls into the Spare Parts box for me, very well-executed and using the concept effectively, but not doing anything new. The great Master and Doctor stuff in WEAT/TDF also sidles around "undercooked" as well, but like the Cybermen stuff (and honestly, Moffat stuff in general) it's relying on fan familiarity to get to where it's going quickly…in a way the episode kind of reminds me of a more balanced Time of the Doctor, where there's so much going on and working that it evens out. Novelisations when?

america should have mandatory voting so that such claims could have credibility

if people know (or otherwise believe) they're in a safe seat for the opposing candidate they have zero motivation to vote and it skews these numbers. It's basic math, anon

the biggest cities in america tend to be safe blue wins. There will be some percentage of people in that area who prefer red but don't bother voting because they know they won't win and it's a waste of time. But since those cities have a large number of people, even a minority percentage could be millions of people - enough to shift the popular vote result if they actually did vote

counting up the popular vote in an electoral college-based election with non-mandatory voting is literally useless, since there are external factors that influence the final vote count and it's not an accurate representation of the entirety of society

They targeted gamers.

Gamers.

We're a group of people who will sit for hours, days, even weeks on end performing some of the hardest, most mentally demanding tasks. Over, and over, and over all for nothing more than a little digital token saying we did.

We'll punish our selfs doing things others would consider torture, because we think it's fun.

We'll spend most if not all of our free time min maxing the stats of a fictional character all to draw out a single extra point of damage per second.

Many of us have made careers out of doing just these things: slogging through the grind, all day, the same quests over and over, hundreds of times to the point where we know evety little detail such that some have attained such gamer nirvana that they can literally play these games blindfolded.

Do these people have any idea how many controllers have been smashed, systems over heated, disks and carts destroyed 8n frustration? All to latter be referred to as bragging rights?

These people honestly think this is a battle they can win? They take our media? We're already building a new one without them. They take our devs? Gamers aren't shy about throwing their money else where, or even making the games our selves. They think calling us racist, mysoginistic, rape apologists is going to change us? We've been called worse things by prepubescent 10 year olds with a shitty head set. They picked a fight against a group that's already grown desensitized to their strategies and methods. Who enjoy the battle of attrition they've threatened us with. Who take it as a challange when they tell us we no longer matter. Our obsession with proving we can after being told we can't is so deeply ingrained from years of dealing with big brothers/sisters and friends laughing at how pathetic we used to be that proving you people wrong has become a very real need; a honed reflex.

Gamers are competative, hard core, by nature. We love a challange. The worst thing you did in all of this was to challange us. You're not special, you're not original, you're not the first; this is just another boss fight.
