>Missy’s the Master! She’s a very different sort of Master, and not just in the obvious ways, but there are definitely better stories than this to talk about that with. Still, it’s worth stressing up front that the notion of her as a distorted mirror of the Doctor is dealt with in much more complex terms than with previous iterations of the character. Which is to say that on the one hand, Clara is a homicidal maniac’s idea of the perfect companion, but on the other there’s no particular reason why this should undermine her. Indeed, given the particulars of Missy’s relationship with the Doctor it’s just as likely to validate her.

>Certainly Missy’s assessment was been a part of Clara long before we found out it was Missy’s. After all, her critics are usually just as quick to call her a Mary Sue as they are to call her unlikable, and while there’s an obvious contradiction in that, the truth is that both accusations are in their own way correct. From the start Clara is defined as the perfect companion. Consider her three introductions: a Junior Entertainment Manager, a job that’s two synonyms away from children’s literature; a fairy tale governess straight out of the golden age of children’s literature; and a children’s literature connoisseur. In other words, she’s consistently framed in terms of the genre the plucky female companion archetype was inherited from, defined by her unwavering adherence to those terms. Indeed, a central engine of the Impossible Girl arc was the constant sense that Clara was simply too good at being a companion.

>Much of her plot in Series Eight consists of responding to the implicit question this leaves behind. If there really is nothing sinister about Clara and she really is just an ordinary girl, why is she so good at being a companion? Or, to put it another way, what sort of person would you have to be in order to actually be the ideal plucky children’s heroine? And the answer turns out to be that you’d have to be deeply, deeply fucked up. And so the cleverness of children’s heroines becomes the purview of liars. Their fearlessness becomes the drive of an addict. Their steadfastness and sense of control over their own stories becomes bossiness.

>This is not a surprise from Moffat. The heart of classic tragedy is generally that the hero is put into a position where their virtues become flaws. Othello, a brilliant soldier known for his decisiveness, is put into a position where the one thing he needs to do is slow down and think; Hamlet, a thoughtful and meticulous scholar, finds himself in one where delaying constantly makes things worse. Moffat’s sense of adventure fiction has always been the inversion of this: the hero is someone with the right vices for a situation. That’s blatantly the heart of Sherlock, and it’s always present in his sense of Matt Smith’s Doctor as a slightly menacing and dangerous figure. So the conclusion that Clara’s heroism should not be a matter of goodness but of flaws is wholly in keeping with how he conceives of the idea.

>The fact that Moffat conceives of all his heroes this way makes it difficult to believe that her flaws-forward presentation is why so many people have it in for her; sexism may not account for each and every individual case, but it remains the best explanation for the aggregate. But there’s still something odd about it in the companion role. Because for all that she’s equated to the Doctor and made mythic in her own right, Clara is still the companion. She’s still the human one, understood through human frailties and ambitions; she’s still us. And that’s an important point opposite Capaldi’s Doctor, who is kept at more of an emotional remove from the audience than any Doctor since McCoy.

>I’ve said before that I’m not wild about calling the companion the audience identification figure, not least because I always wanted to be the Doctor, not the companion. But the thing is, so does Clara. When Rose or Donna had to be the Doctor it was something forced upon them. But Clara leaps at the opportunity. That’s never really been something the companion has aspired towards before. And if there’s a mad and annihilating hubris to it, well, that’s how some things are. Certainly it’s how stealing a TARDIS and running away is. You don’t fall out of the world with your sense of self intact.

>Clara forces us to confront that, and Flatline is the story that shows us what that’s going to mean. It’s not pretty, and as the Doctor says, goodness has nothing to do with it. But that’s not the same as saying it’s bad. It’s saying that this isn’t about morality. It’s just human. It might be the most human thing there is. Certainly, at this point, Clara is the most human companion we’ve ever had. Don’t stop her now.

Plan is whatever we make it. I think ST3 at the very least shouldn't happen until after S11, and probably after this year's Christmas special too if we get one, since presumably it'll feature a lot of 13/Jodie stories.

There is no rush for ST1.5, I've said before I'd like to take the reins on that myself and given there's no rush for it I think it should remain on the backburner until there's no real upcoming stuff going on and we've got a big sized hole in the schedule, so to speak. I've got plenty of exciting ideas for /who/res regarding it, but I'll wait until a good while before storming it up since there's no point going after any attention now.

So basically the way I see things panning out is

>2.5 releases

>2.5 readthrough

>? maybe the zine in this gap of a few short months if people want

>S11 + christmas special

>ST3

>?

maybe 1.5 in this gap if nothing else comes up

I'd assumed that 1.5 and 3 wouldn't be happening until way after S11 ends. Once 2.5's finished, I'd also expect that there'd be a gap before we started another project.

>>37949

I'd suggest something along these lines but maybe hold off on the zine for a bit until we know what would be put inside it. I remember the content lists floating about somewhat vaguely but I don't think anyone established anything concrete.

 No.37952

Also not sure if this came across as self-evident but I think 1.5 should be after 3 for sure. I don't think the ".5" issues necessarily need to be a regular thing either; ST2.5 was born out of ST2 lacking some certain types of stories and a lot of folks liking ST2 a lot and wishing they'd had a chance to get into it. 1.5 is a special/gag premise riffing off the idea of a .5 volume. If everyone who wants to write a ST3 fic does, and there's a nice range of stories, I don't necessarily see a need for 3.5 - this is way off, but just me explaining my headspace for why I always took it for granted 1.5 would come after 3.

 No.37953

>>37952

3.5 should only come if there's some obvious justification for it.

Here's one: 2.5 is alternate doctors, 1.5 is retcons, maybe 3.5 is non-fiction essays/effortposts about the show?

The idea of 1.5 is to retcon in an anthology into a space where it didn't exist, to anachronistically jut in an anthology where it didn't originally exist. This wouldn't make sense for a hypothetical 3.5, as it would just came after 3. As for 2.5, that exists for those reasons talked about above, which I doubt will (or should) be replicated for 3.

>>37958

That's true. There's nothing stopping people writing alt Docs in ST3 though. We'll see what happens with ST3 before this conversation really becoming tangible.

3.5 being a collection of about 20-25 effortposts would be quite a drag to go through. If the zine does this idea I think it'd be better served with a steady rotation of people for the specific section.

>>37962

Forgive me if I'm missing the point, but what you're saying is that if 3.5 comes around next year/later next year, it'd occupy the 1.5 space as a joke, or would that space be occupied by 3.5?

>organising 1.5 makes the most sense after 3 has been released

 No.37966

>>37965

so 1.5 would be its own thing in the vein of 1 and 2?

 No.37967

>>37966

The idea for 1.5 is an anthology we collectively retcon inbetween ST1 and ST2. Retcons are a huge part of Doctor Who (from the endless small lore ones every season/series peppers in, to huge ones like the John Hurt Doctor), and I think an anthology basing itself around that idea would be ripe for great stories.

>retcon Doctors, like the Devious Doctor, Hurt Doctor, or people's own creations (a Doctor in between 10 and 11 played by Ben Whishaw? Go for it)

>For authors that already wrote for ST2, prequels to their stories. Hell, for authors that didn't write for ST2, prequels for ST2 stories.

>Retconned Doctor Who stories, anywhere in the timeline and for any episode/story one desires

Moments like 10 appearing to Rose in EOT, the entire existence of Devious and The Day of the Doctor, basically anything to do with early Dalek chronology, these are all the sorts of retcons Doctor Who engages in all the time - why don't we do some too?

I'd imagine it'd be a leaner anthology than ST1/2/3 since the premise is more selective, but I think it'll be a lot of fun.

 No.37968

>>37967

I'm just trying to get the ideas as defined as posible for those who may be thinking along the same lines as me. What would you say is suited for the retcon anthology, and what would you also say may not be suitable for it?

 No.37969

Which Doctor Who stories are the most likely to be haunted or cursed, in the vein of The Bedlam In Goliath?

Can't help but think some vengeful remnant of Robert Holmes is lurking around The Ultimate Foe somewhere.

 No.37970

>>37968

No problem. Can you list any specific examples you'd want clarified? I'm thinking, if people are amenable, along the lines of

suitable

>stories with a retcon Doctor (Devious Doctor, Hurt Doctor, any OC retcon Doctor [ie 10 regenerating directly into 11 in EOT doesn't preclude writing an alternate take on that where he doesn't, or telling an "untold story" where actually he regenerated into someone else and wibbly wobbly timey wimey that timeline collapsed and then he went straight into 11, etc.])

>retcon stories (a prequel to Silence in the Library where the Silents were in the Library, a prequel to WEAT/TDF showing how the Simm Master ended up as he did after EOT, etc - the possibilities are huge here, as a retcon basically umbrella contains the idea of a prequel.)

unsuitable

>a future 13 story with new villains and no retcon elements present

>anything that doesn't include a retcon or play around with the idea of retconning wouldn't fit the spirit of things

>I think things just like a past Doctor story, while technically prequels and thus "retcons" in that sense, wouldn't be super on theme if they didn't contain any retcon elements at all besides "this is a story with a past Doctor", but if that's what people want to do I'm hardly in command here; this is all communal

I also had an idea that in retrospect would have been better for 2.5, but I'd had to have had the idea several months ago in order to give it time to ferment, and to do research. Luckily, it's all about retcons so it'll fit in 1.5 nicely, assuming it's not too long.

Basic outline is that it's what Torchwood was up to in the 1960s. The plot follows Yvonne Hartman's dad as he navigates the smoky corridors of power. Torchwood is reeling not only from the Shoreditch Incursion and the British Rocket Group disaster, but also the shrinking of the Empire. The mysterious leader of the Torchwood Institute spends every day sending out memos to offices throughout Africa telling them to either dispose of their evidence or else have it shipped to the home offices, only to learn they often can't or won't. Instead, it's thrown in vaults or landfills, to be found decades later.

The Institute's goal of capturing the Doctor has taken a distant backseat as the empire is now being inundated with alien strike forces and sinister extra-terrestrial plots. And through it all, Hartman has to contend with his irrepressible partner, Captain Jack Harkness, who seems to spend all his time privately debriefing the many lovely ladies and studly gentlemen who claim to have met and been abandoned by the Doctor.

>Hartman passed by Jack Harkness's office. The lech was on the phone with someone. "Ms Chaplet," he was saying, "I was wondering if I could come by your flat later and debrief you again, about your encounter." Harkness glanced up, noticing Hartman, and shared a saucy wink as he closed the door.

He definitely gets Jacked at some point.

My feeling is it should probably be set in 65, since that's when Ian and Barbara return and also when the 456 make contact.

I wrote a little bit of Barbara's interrogation. I think that the boss (probably an OC, or else a suitable reference character that might as well be) will be watching this video when Hartman comes in to tell him something important:

>"I'll tell you what I told the last man who asked me that question and what I'll tell the next man who asks me that question," Barbara said on the video, "No matter how long you look, no matter where you look, you're never going to find him." She turned and faced the camera. "You'd be better off hoping he just shows up on your doorstep someday."

We definitely find out that the "Britain won't support the project so he had to go to the UN" backstory for the Brig and UNIT is because the boss at Torchwood specifically dislikes him personally and was blocking his efforts. I wonder, hesitantly, if it makes sense for the boss to be Bernard Quatermass or whichever of Jo's relatives got her the job at UNIT.

It's a very American thing. It's very possible to have a low or working class person who owns very little but still has a substantial amount of property, and when all you possess is material, it's easy to become obsessed with caring for and preserving it. For reasons unclear to me, mowing the lawn is traditionally seen as man's work, as opposed to gardening tasks which are more seen as women's work, so a lawn is mowed either by the man of the house or one of his sons. At least, that's the folklore.

Is there any doubt Disney is paying off RLM at this point? All the evidence points towards Disney enforcing a moratorium upon posting the Solo HITB for the opening week. It's a fair assumption that the deal of their agreement was that RLM gets to shit on the anthology films to retain geek credibility, while toeing the party line on the episodic films. Sad to see how a once mighty titan of online criticism has fallen to the mouse like so many others. As for a Doctor Who equivalent, there isn't exactly one in monetary terms, but there's definitely a community around BF that perpetuates thought-termination of any and all criticism in that way. Does anywhere else besides here and Sandifer's circles criticise BF as scathingly as we do? Does the Reddit discord? Do the FP tumblrs?

The answer is yes: many Redditors and a lot of the FP-adjacent Tumblrs are just as critical, though obviously you can still find "BF can do no wrong" people everywhere.

Note that "Reddit Discord" is a bit of a misnomer. It certainly started as one, with the subreddit mod teams modding the Discord. But the two teams have substantially diverged since then, and the server gets most of its new members from places other than Reddit: Tumblr, the Tardis Wiki, and most importantly, Discord itself (since the server is officially partnered). I can't think of a FP-adjacent Tumblrer who isn't on the Discord.

What's that mean? It's all greek to me, and fascinating to hear off these far-off lands I understand little of.

I believe you, but whenever I've peeked at the BF review threads on reddit it seems to be the same powerusers piling praise at various levels onto whatever release. I see some mockery of their type of output, but have never seen anything really structural like I do here and with Sandifer's lot. This sounds like I'm redditsplaining to a r/gallifrey mod…I don't know what the fuck I'm saying, just anything that comes to mind on this topic since I'm interested in your thoughts.

I remember that ffwidhader guy on r/gallifrey, I always liked his posts, I think he deleted his account though? I saw thisoldcan seemed to a while ago too, their reviews are the sort of thing I was talking about earlier. They were damn prolific, I'll give em that.

As >>38185 said, being "officially partnered" just means that Discord noticed we're bringing in a lot of new users, so they gave us a fancy discordapp.com/invite/doctorwho invite link instead of random letters, and we get higher quality voice streaming, and some of the mods also get access to beta testing features.

I understand what you mean about the r/gal BF review threads. It kind of makes sense that the people who would listen to those audios and post in those threads would be big fans, though. Good excuses to shit on BF rarely pop up on the subs, but in the Discord where conversation flows more freely, it's a lot more common.

iirc ThisOldCan was explicitly trying to get BF to notice him so he could get advance copies of audios, so you're not wrong about his reviews.

>>38186

Nah, Fwhiffahder was never banned from Reddit; Neo's right that she deleted her Reddit account (and her Tumblr). She was banned from the Dr Who server for that reason, though. She reacts very very harshly to anything that might suggest transphobia. I'm still very indebted to her for her help with the Faction Paradox inclusion debate, though; the wiki lost something great when she was banned. >>38194

>why would one want advance copies? I have a review blog unrelated to Who and can't imagine the stress that trying to push its output to get a chance at review copies for something would be.

Prestige, I guess. Why do we seek out spoilers for TV Doctor Who? Would you take the opportunity to watch episodes a few weeks before they air? From my experience, it's pretty nice, and I imagine that draw extends to Briggs Finish. Whether or not "writing good reviews" is a smart path to getting that access is a completely different question.

And you're not too forward at all. I love answering questions. But I completely fell into it; it's all been almost remarkably easy, even as I'm approaching the final stages of withdrawing from it all. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask away.

Funny, I was just going back and forth with GI yesterday about how I don't seek out spoilers and have been enjoying /who/ being a haven from them now Chibnall has effectively rechristened himself Chadnall and clamped down on them all but entirely.

>I'm approaching the final stages of withdrawing from it all

!? I certainly got the impression you were taking a break or stepping back from things you've said lately but didn't realise there was that much weighty permanence to it. Damn dude…well you did say you were content with your end the other night on the stream so I guess I won't say I'm sorry to hear that, but…:(, you know. I imagine writing and organising at your level gets/got(gots?) overwhelming? I wonder at the sort of personalities that do this stuff; I know we /who/res are an aberration in how exceedingly well-adjusted we are.

I know it's judgemental for me but there's something about how Doctor Who has no canon that makes "fanfic" for it seem like a worthier pursuit than fanfic for other things. I know not everyone takes that lack of canon as seriously as some of us, but I think it really does fundamentally affect the motivation and positioning of things from as tucked-away and insular as Shit Trips, to semi endorsed/ignored charity anthologies, to licensed-but-kept-at-arms-length stuff like the "official" EU.

Dalek's Master Plan and The War Games appeal to my interest in really long stories, Genesis, Resurrection, Attack, Pyramids of Mars, Ghost Light and Curse of Fenric appeal to my interests in horror fiction although for different reasons - the first three are very much reminiscent of a slasher film where the cast gets whittled down to one or two characters whereas the others visually and thematically represent late 60's/early 70's Hammer Horror films (whether those stories make good DOCTOR WHO stories, however, is up for debate).

The line "[spoiler]everything has its time and everything dies.[/spoiler" stuck out like a mantra in my head. I love other episodes more, but the point of that episode and the scale with which it told it affected me more than I think I realised at the time. Children and family geared media tend to focus more on survivorship and resilience, the idea of surrendering mindfully to death and making peace with it is quite something else.

>it really does fundamentally affect the motivation and positioning of things from as tucked-away and insular as Shit Trips, to semi endorsed/ignored charity anthologies, to licensed-but-kept-at-arms-length stuff like the "official" EU.

Yeah, there's definitely something there in Who. It makes it utterly impossible to encylopediaize: eg, like the Tardis Wiki, I always treated charity anthologies as very secondary to stuff like Short Trips, but then I read some of the OG ones (Perfect Timing, Missing Pieces) and realized that not only were there plenty of stories by elsewhere-officially-published writers, there were stories that connected or closed loose ends from their official stories! And yet, that information is always going to be relegated to second-best by stuff like the Tardis Wiki.

http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Last_Contact

http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/The_Beauftragter

http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/War_veteran_(Now_or_Thereabouts)

I've tried to continue that tradition in my Shit Trips stories: eg my ST2 minific foreshadows both of my Faction Paradox short stories, and it's the first mention of the http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Plume_Coteries

Gatiss is clearly a horror junkie and it's a shame that his horror eps fell flat on their faces repeatedly. I also forgot to mention that Terror of the Zygons is absolutely fantastic and one of the best atmospheric horrors that Doctor Who has ever done. The acting, the music and the visuals all work together perfectly. I personally don't consider Trials to be part of the long family story because there's a very important separation with the three; Master Plan and The War Games are one continual story and while Trial is also one long story, it's also split into four smaller stories. I personally don't think that you can say that about TDMP or TWG.

I think the phrase for Series 11 is "cautiously optimistic". Episode 1 will absolutely be a make-or-break deal and no one will ever convince me otherwise. Chibby does well with ep1? Nice. Chibby does badly with ep1? Uh oh. Chibby does middlingly with ep1? Pure terror.

Outside of who, Gotham is so bizarrely catered to my taste in aesthetics, in themes, in kink, that I honestly cannot be objective about its quality or lack thereof. If I was going to make a series about Batman, it would be extremely similar to Gotham.

City of Death plays to my sense of humour pretty perfectly, which makes a lot of sense, because my whole sense of humour was pretty much shaped by The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Other than that, Heaven Sent feels pretty much tailored to me, in the way it looks, in the crazy sci fi resolution with the teleport, and most importantly, the emotional core of 12 losing Clara…. I dont claim to know much about Television, but that episode is one that I truly adore, and feels like the perfect episode for me.

I used to not like the idea of 'Bad Wolf' being an all powerful being, and I felt it was a slight cop out at the end of Series 1.

Now I like to think Bad Wolf was manipulating all of Tennant's era. In 'Journey's End', Rose gets her perfect ending. She gets to grow old with the Doctor in her own universe. Arguably the best possible outcome for her… I like to think when Rose became Bad Wolf for about 2 minutes, she manipulated the timelines to give herself that outcome. (also explains the coincidences leading Donna to the Doctor in a more satisfying way). And then of course Bad Wolf was in DotD… I basically went from thinking Bad Wolf was too powerful to headcanoning her as the most influential entity in the new series…. And Bad Wolf only existed for a couple of minutes

This actually just depresses me because there are so many comments from people that are just earnestly looking forward to it, or sharing their opinions, and we're bullying them.

 No.38624

>>38623

We had fun absolutely dominating the twitch chat with Nilsoposting, but decided to stop it of our own accord in the end so the actual Nilso wouldn't have to put up with the masses of non /who/res we were converting. Nice to see we could indeed do it though.

It's Neo trying to rewrite history. But you can't rewrite one line.

But I agree y'all should hold off. Keep it up, and we'll disrupt people's experience, and might literally get the BBC's attention.

(However, if this ends with an official BBC article containing the word "Nilso", I will laugh out loud.)
