Folks, let's talk.

As some of you may know, this sub celebrated 10 years a couple of weeks ago.

Now, back when I created the sub I had visions of Ten and Rose's family on Christmas Day, celebrating a potential feast. Frustratingly, the state of the sub has turned from celebrating (Doctor Who) to bashing, ridiculing, harassment, and downright negativity.

I didn't create the sub to be like this and I'm sick and tired of it.

What I'm considering doing is to start removing/banning negative posts criticizing this and that. This is not a place to come and state your dislike for whatever you dislike about Doctor Who. I held off simply because it would be censorship and I am the last person to want to censor anything.

I think starting with the negative posts would cut down on a lot of the crap and I'd leave the comments alone. If I see the comments sustaining negativity. then I'll look at addressing them.

I don't like discussing this topic, but I refuse to let the hard work and dedication of the past ten years dissolve into toxicity. I haven't implemented anything yet, but something is coming. If someone has an idea on how to better deal with the issue, I'm all ears. I was hoping it would fade away as it seemed to do in the past, but it seems to be growing stronger.

I'm frustrated, the mods are frustrated, and a lot of you are frustrated.

*I'm heading to work. I'll be back later today to continue the conversation. The other mods will be around as their time allows.

Clara in Series 9 is a complete nothing character who's only there to come out with some lines to build up to her exit, whereas in Series 8 she actually had a purpose and an interesting character.

Just disappointingly goes to show what most Doctor Who Fans want from a companion is for them to be generic pretty faces who are there to prop up the Doctor.

Yeah, I'm thinking alt-1 is back.

Really interested in this set. The pure historical set in 1800s Japan is based off a script Andrew Smith actually wrote for 5 in the 80s (which Saward rejected), and he's tinkered with it a lot since then. In Vortex he was gushing about his apparently genuine interest in Japanese history, right down to him insisting they change the sound effects of the audio to fit with how X Japanese furniture in X Japanese room actually would have sounded. The pure historical in the first 1DA set was super comfy, so I'm rather hopeful for this. Everyone in Vortex was uncharacteristically vague about the sci-fi story in the set; apparently Dorney "tried something different" (forgive me if I have very low assessments of the man's ambition when he acted like The Starship of Theseus was basically a step too far and capitulating to fans).

Clara in series 7 was a deconstruction of the Companion trope and one of the most interesting characters the show has ever had. Her proper introduction was woven into previous episodes to imply the greater gravitas of her character's direction, which paid off in spades when the arc is realized and the mystery pulls back the curtains finally: its a reverse bad wolf that puts the power and resolution back into the doctor's hands. Instead of an entire arc of stories that lead to the companion gaining super powers its an entire arc about the doctor going from depressed and alone and grumpy to learning to be The Eleventh Doctor with all of his bluster and pagentry so he can make his last stand on trenzalore, so he can finally play his role and make his choices again.

Clara's arc, a nanny down in life, gaining confidence by revisiting her heritage, learning to be brave for others while trapped in a submarine and later gaining the courage to stand up to the doctor and then save his life? Entangle herself in intergalactic wars and prove she's on the doctor's level? Thats an arc! Thats arguably a better arc than amy or donna, who were basically done as characters once the novelty of their confidence and loud behaviors wore off and were reduced to strong willed banter.

Clara in series 7 suffers from being one of the meekest companions in nuwho, but dont let that fool you: her lack of confidence and opinionated interjection is one of the strengths of the build up of a doctor-centric arc while she receives some of the best build in Doctor Who history.

Prior to the 1DAs, had the First Doctor ever fought the Master in non-TV media?

 No.43241

>>43236

I really like him. I like the whole idea of the 1DAs so much; I hope BF keeps doing stuff more in that vein rather than just pretending X actor is actually a deceased actor. Going more alt-universe is more interesting and has more creative longevity as there comes a time where basically everything BF can mine from an actual era is mined.

I will say, much as I loved the historical in the first 1DAs, my favourite moment of the set was actually in the behind the scenes. At one point, he actor for Ian says Chibnall should bring him, pseudo-Barbara and Bradley 1 back, there's no response, five seconds of silence, then the music plays and an unrelated interview begins. It's awkward and hilarious.

Bradley is so clearly and infectiously pleased with playing 1, he really, really loves the role and playing the part. He's very aware of how it's "diminished" in the sense to like a traditional Doctor playing the part, but loves it all the same. Pseudo-Ian and pseudo-Barbara have nice chemistry. I like how different pseudo-Susan is, she's off playing with a more purring, kind of mussed up performance.

I roll my eyes at how Briggs walked back from describing the 1DAs as effectively a sort of Unbound range, because that really is what they work best as. The more they sidle over to just being a replacement for regular 1 audios, the weaker they get (well, the "First Master" is the only outright shit part of the series so far), the more they embrace being an alternate take, a reimagining from never-made scripts up, the more interesting they get.

>>43237

Interesting perspective. I do quietly think Clara actually had a strong "arc" in series 7, but not in terms of her actual characterisation as such. For me it worked as a meta riff on the super special companion trope, the kind of deification RTD and Moff are wont to do, as the ultimate reveal about Clara's character was all the traits we were brushing aside (little family issues, working with children, playfulness, etc.) were the actual sum of her character. The super special le give the companion an epic name stuff was entirely a mechanical plot device entirely dropped after it happened, and what mattered all along was the actual character we'd been ignoring in favour of playing along Moff's ride. I find that more interesting to reflect on than to actually watch in action though. Fortunately, Coleman is a brilliant enough actor she stitched it together and transcended where it didn't work so great, and Moff wrote her brilliantly for her next two series.

 No.43267

You think so? You're not sure you remember? Steven Hall is easily one of the best writers BF have ever had, and he effortlessly brought together tonnes of story threads from all over the shop into a coherent, powerful, ridiculously strong story in its own right. The prospect of him doing that at high points in both 7 and 8's runs, especially such moments of dramatic contention for the characters, is hugely appealing. That's not even getting into the fact it would have been a new kind of multiDoctor story, an all-out blood-for-blood conflict between two Doctors with every reason to despise each other. It was the chance for a properly new story, with a properly brilliant writer, at a very opportune time. It didn't slip through BF's fingers, they actively rejected it, because it's more important to keep every audio to ~3 principal cast members instead of producing anything memorable or of note ever.

This, I don't really see any reason to get especially excited about cinematography especially. The same vista-spanning type of shots from Broadchurch might get used in stories they don't really add anything to. I do think the Chibnall era will probably consistently look better than Moffat's, but I'm not sure we'll be getting Haynes or Talalay tier cinematography on the regular.

>>43270

8 would have a kino moment every now again in his audios when he'd talk acidly about 7 and how he spun himself out such a different man from him. 7 and 8 outright fighting would have been a The Doctor Falls Master-killing-themselves level (maybe higher) way to externalise that kind of character issue. Gahhh, #bringhallback

Having said that, there is every possibility that one of the new directors (being literal whos, so somewhat unpredictable) might suddenly surprise us by being immensely ambitious and sophisticated. But during Moffat's era, I think his writing/stewardship of the show sort of encouraged that approach, and Chibnall's most certainly won't.

If you want a vision of the future, imagine a Slitheen stamping on Donna's mum's face - forever.

>>43274

Oh 100%, and I dearly hope so, but there's just not much tangible to really hope for there, you know what I mean? There's every chance, but we just don't know. Moff had a keener understanding of the importance of visually keeping the show consistently revitalised than RTD did. I hope Chibnall has that sort of sense too. Broadchurch looked great and had a distinctive visual style, but that style was very tied to the realities of the location it was shot at. DW is so location-spanning that he'd have to come up with a different visual sense, multiple visual senses, so really I just hope he keeps focus on the importance of visuals and fostering directorial talent in general.

This. It reminds me of those /tv/ threads where people are watching a film taking up one half of a monitor, with /tv/ on the other half, and playing a fucking video game or something on a second monitor. If that's how you relax, more power to you, but if you think you've engaged with the media the way someone paying attention to it has…or if you're just watching it to try and be part of the cultural conversation or, worse yet, just to say you watched it…gah. Using consumption as a badge is bad enough, but when people aren't even really consuming the actual thing anymore, it's just insane.

I just realised how much I dislike the term 'infosorb', like I had used it myself and was completely fine with it up to this exact moment when I suddenly realised it encapsulates everything that troubles me about fan consumption of media. Holy fuck. I can't believe we tried to shill this as an all-encompassing term for consuming Who stories in any medium. It literally reduces experiencing art to "absorption of info" like the goal is to research what happened in the plot, just for the sake of knowing the made-up facts, as opposed to genuinely enjoying and being transported by a piece of storytelling (i.e. the whole point of it). That's absolutely wild. Like I know it is literally an act of absorbing info, but so is watching paint dry or glancing at Twitter. This word does not even approach adequacy for its intended purpose.

I think what tipped me over was the idea of "efficiency". As if watching Doctor Who is a job you have to get through, as opposed to a recreational activity (and this is where it becomes endemic of the fan approach, watching it just for the sake of having done it, under the belief that this is edifying - which strikes me as infinitely pointless). Watching on high speed is what I do for random Youtube videos with irksome narrators, or bottom-of-the-barrel anime I'm only skimming for the cute boys, not pieces of television/filmmaking I even remotely respect where atmosphere and timing might genuinely be important (or at least the intention of the director). desu I would only even consider fast forwarding Doctor Who if I was absolutely certain the serial/episode was pure shit, and even then, the show is so documented and obsessed over that I might as well just stop watching because all the good bits will be on Youtube or written up somewhere.

It's gamification of media.

The really hilarious example of is games themselves being gamified. [spoilerIt's great, truly great, that people have enough leisure time for this to be an "issue", but part of me is a le wrong generation type and quietly bemoans that people aren't engaging more "purely" with some of the art of the world. Yes, I know it's beyond stupid to care about what others do with their free time, and it's just a very quiet, albeit judgemental, part of me. Maybe it's just that I've been so profoundly affected by engaging with some media as levelly as I could, that I wish others had more of the same sort of experiences in a kind of vaguely proselytizing way, but really, I don't know these people's lives and I'm really not qualified to make those judgements, so I'll just remain quietly and very slightly prejudiced about what we all do in our free time.[/spoiler]

This.

The fact that so many reviewers still name Robert Holmes as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" Doctor Who writer ever only tells you how far the show still is from becoming a serious drama. Briggs Finish reviewers have long recognized that the greatest writers of all times are Robert Shearman and John Dorney, who were not the most famous or richest or most lauded of their times, let alone of all times. Book reviewers rank the highly controversial Lawrence Miles over writers who were highly popular in sales in Europe. Doctor Who reviewers are still blinded by fan opinions. Holmes episodes were viewed more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Briggs Finish reviewers grow up listening to a lot of stories of the past, book reviewers grow up reading a lot of books of the past. Doctor Who reviewers are often totally ignorant of the episodes of the past, they barely know the DWM classic top 10. No wonder they will think that Robert Holmes did anything worthy of being saved.

She then teams up with the doctor to take on the autons, who burst out of shop windows and then are defeated by the doctor's Weird Science solution.

 No.43767

I just realised how much I dislike the term 'political spat', like I had used it myself and was completely fine with it up to this exact moment when I suddenly realised it encapsulates everything that troubles me about /doctorwho/. Holy fuck. I can't believe we tried to shill this as an all-encompassing term for unrelated arguments. It literally reduces experiencing real discourse to "hiding posts" like the goal is to avoid others' point of view, just for the sake of having a more pleasurable thread, as opposed to genuinely learning and being educated by a debate (i.e. the whole point of it). That's absolutely wild. Like I know it is literally an act of arguing politically, but so is watching paint dry or glancing at Twitter. This word does not even approach adequacy for its intended purpose.

I think what tipped me over was the idea of "falseflagging". As if arguing about President Trump is a job you pretend to dislike, as opposed to a societal activity (and this is where it becomes endemic of the citizen approach, arguing it just for the sake of having done it, under the belief that this is edifying - which strikes me as infinitely pointless). Skipping political spats is what I do for random Youtube videos with irksome narrators, or bottom-of-the-barrel anime I'm only skimming for the cute boys, not pieces of television/filmmaking I even remotely respect where left/right bias might genuinely be important (or at least the intention of the director). desu I would only even consider skipping political arguments if I was absolutely certain the debate was pure shit, and even then, politics is so documented and obsessed over that I might as well just stop reading because all the good bits will be on Youtube or written up somewhere.

>if you gave most of Clara's plotlines to River Song instead of the assassin bullshit

Putting aside the plebbery of this dude, there may be something in this. Not saying it would be better than Clara's actual plot, but some (not all) of the two characters' plotlines could have been combined into one giant one and still work thematically. If we throw out everything and start from scratch with a hypothetical new character:

>character who is raised by the Silence (or chosen by Missy?) to ultimately be the Doctor's downfall (River)

>in order to get close to him she is designed/selected to be the 'perfect companion' (Clara)

>this means she actually has extremely controlling, deceptive and destructive tendencies (Clara)

>this also means that the Doctor has an unusual attachment to her because she is such a mirror of him (Clara)

>this leads to them ultimately falling in love/getting married (River)

>she ends up breaking time itself to avoid fulfilling her role of killing him (River)

>this could either be what leads to her death, or they get out of it i.e. S6 and some more beats from S8/9 happen instead, but ultimately she still dies due to her own ambitions (Clara)

>Doctor ends up going nuclear to save her as in HS/HB, ends up having his mind wiped of her (Clara)

Potentially this could even be integrated with the non-chronological order of meeting from River's storyline - e.g. he knows she's going to die from their first encounter, but only at the end after everything else has happened does he become Hell Bent on going back and undoing it.

Moffat hate youtube commenters have sunk to the level of defending ISIS to criticize episodes.

>tinny unrestored audio

Expecting them to go out of their way to get a remastered version isn't in keeping with the level of effort they have put into this marathon.

 No.43939

Are you sure it's SD? The stream goes up to 720p, it could just be low bitrate

It's got the small black lines at the top and bottom that come from SD videotape which the Spearhead HD restoration went nowhere near. Also the end credits are a different font and colour on the Spearhead Blu-Ray than the Twitch stream.

Is this, dare I say it, the end of Neo?

>The stream goes up to 720p

That's been true for the entire broadcast, it's just been upscaled from the SD source video.

As someone who has drunkposted I have very little respect for the practice. The only reason anyone hits submit on incoherent mistyped posts while drunk is that they think it'll be funny. Drunkenness is performative.
