 No.49423

>>49418

To you, and any other anons keen for the epub/mobi/azw3 file:

Within seven days (perhaps next Saturday, possibly sooner) there will be a very minor update to the anthology, like a tiny software patch. Some spillover section headings will be amended (so instead of a new subchapter title appearing at the end of some pages, it will be at the start of the next page), Nilso will have a tiny error in his story amended along with the remaining sections added, and some formatting issues with the brilliant Relative Dimensions story will be fixed. This is no way constitutes a meaningful change to the anthology; just a very minor polish to leave it as definitive.

Bookclub will be organised around this, so no affected stories will be read before the fixes have been applied in what you might think of as Shit Trips 2.5.1 (though I think even that is overstating it). But what I'm asking you is would you like the epub (or mobi/azw3) today, or to wait until the point in the next seven days will the henceforth untouched patched version will be uploaded?

I don't know what people were saying earlier about a "mixed up book club order" but for ST2 we just went from the start to the end in a straight line, and given the deliberate ordering of the stories in the volume I think it would be prudent to do the same for 2.5. In fact allow me to recap for those who weren't around.

Originally we had book club twice a week, every Wednesday and Sunday. I scheduled the stories so that Sunday had a slightly larger block than Wednesday (due to there being an extra day to read those stories in advance and also it being the weekend). It took roughly two months to get through the whole anthology this way.

Back on /tv/ I'd make the book club post at the top of every thread until the scheduled 24 hour period had passed, to give people all day to respond. Obviously it's slower here and we have longer threads so I won't need to post as much, and if a thread lasts more than a day then the book club post will still be up for people to reply to, which is fine. (Because of that I might subtly increase the sizes of the blocks this time, and I'm thinking of tweaking the post days as well.)

Unless anyone has some desperate reason why the plan needs to be changed, I'm good to go and plan on starting it this coming week. I do have some very boring work to do to set it up first though.

 No.49567

And yes, more time will be allotted for 'Follow the River, and You Will Reach the Sea''. I'm debating how to do that - I want people to have time to read it all if they choose, but I don't want things to get monotonous in the meantime.

The premise of book club is that it happens in the main thread (in fact it was explicitly conceived as a way of livening up /who/ itself). I have no plans to sequester it off to its own thread, unless a majority of people think that would be necessary. I appreciate wanting to use the space offered by /doctorwho/, but forcing people to jump back and forth between threads is less convenient and will probably reduce the amount of discussion. (Also, I have a suspicion people might be less confident about writing feedback/etc about the stories if there's no other conversation happening around them.)

If a user don't wish to see book club posts, they can filter my tripcode and use Filter -> Post+ to hide the replies.

 No.49654

From Paul Cornell's newsletter

When Steven Moffat took over as showrunner of Doctor Who, he immediately indicated to me that he'd like me to submit a script. We'd always talked casually about an adaptation of my New Adventure novel Love and War, but, if we did that again at this point, the chat swiftly moved on to me adapting instead my Doctor Who short story 'The Hopes and Fears of All the Years' (the link takes you to the complete story), which had been published by The Daily Telegraph for Christmas 2007. In that story, a little boy is visited by the Tenth Doctor every Christmas, because the Doctor knows he will, during one Christmas, save the boy's life. It charts the life story of the boy, then the man, through regular visits on the same day.

It was always going to be about the Doctor witnessing a person's whole life through visiting them on the same day, their birthday, every year, in order to protect them from something. The nature of that threat, though, kept changing. I never found one that truly satisfied everyone. And that, along with the cost of depicting the changing life circumstances of the boy (this was a script that included two World Wars, each for one scene), was what I think finally sank it.

(series 8)

I went along to a meeting with Steven and several other execs, to which I pitched, I think, three things. There was something about 1920s aviators meeting creatures who lived in the clouds. One idea was about a community of vampires living peacefully in London, and involved Clara getting turned into one. (I'd been very impressed with Jenna Coleman in the previous season.) Steven in these meetings is something to behold, taking onboard what's offered and immediately replying with your idea turned inside-out, having had three better plot beats bolted on. I was told to develop the vampire thing further, but with the Doctor as the vampire, in a sort of inverse 'Human Nature', going with the idea that this was to be a Doctor who couldn't quite be trusted. Also, we persisted with, yet again, the idea of adapting Love and War as a two-parter. Steven mentioned, however, that I'd have to stay clear of things bursting out of graves, because, I think, he already knew how that first Capaldi season was going to end.

I can lock the thread to prevent that. I had a question/pondering regarding the book club though. Would it be "nice" to collect all of the discussion in another place congruent/parallel to the general threads, since we don't have a decent search function/archive? I like the ctrl+v idea but I'm gonna quote the main man (or woman) himself (or herself) here:

>>49573

>The premise of book club is that it happens in the main thread (in fact it was explicitly conceived as a way of livening up /who/ itself). I have no plans to sequester it off to its own thread, unless a majority of people think that would be necessary. I appreciate wanting to use the space offered by /doctorwho/, but forcing people to jump back and forth between threads is less convenient and will probably reduce the amount of discussion. (Also, I have a suspicion people might be less confident about writing feedback/etc about the stories if there's no other conversation happening around them.)

 No.49754

Ctrl v, and not necessarily in another thread. On the wiki or, we have an ability to "add pages" how, i'm not sure exactly, but it can be linked from the board.

I was literally just reading a Lynch interview.

>David Lynch is a cheery, congenial soul who rivals the Simpsons character Ned Flanders for howdy-doody niceness. “Hey, bud!” he greets the assistant, offering me a handshake and wide smile. He laughs, often, and yearns for peace on Earth. “I love my life and I’m a happy camper,” he says. “It would be nice if we were all able to fulfil our desires and live good, long, happy lives.”

>He does, however, squash the theory, much loved by some Peakers, that the last two parts of the 18-hour series should be watched simultaneously on two screens, with dialogue overlapping. “Yeah, I heard that. It’s bullshit. See, it’s beautiful that someone came up with this. You could double-expose scenes in lots of films and it could conjure some fantastic thing.”

>He is undecided about Donald Trump. “He could go down as one of the greatest presidents in history because he has disrupted the thing so much. No one is able to counter this guy in an intelligent way.” While Trump may not be doing a good job himself, Lynch thinks, he is opening up a space where other outsiders might. “Our so-called leaders can’t take the country forward, can’t get anything done. Like children, they are. Trump has shown all this.”

>>49471

I've heard you say this a few times now, but I don't think it's necessarily true. Loz left purely of his own decision – God knows Stu tried hard enough to get him to stay (he deserves solo credit for "A Romance in Twelve Parts") but it's hard to argue with someone's psychologist.

As for hiring noname authors … how is that unlike anything MNP did? Let's look at their complete FP roster:

>"Big names": Lawrence Miles (novel), Lance Parkin (novel), Daniel O'Mahony (in BotW), Simon Bucher-Jones (in BotW)

>Little names (one Dr Who novel or less): Mags L Halliday (novel), Kelly Hale (novel), Mark Clapham (in BotW)

>Complete "noname"s: Philip Purser-Hallard (novel), Ian McIntire (in BotW), Helen Fayle (in BotW), Jonathan Dennis (in BotW), Lars Pearson (in BotW)

Nowadays it's kind of hard to imagine casually dismissing PPH and Jon Dennis as "nonames", but their only stories before BotW were in charity anthologies. (Which I'm not counting here, for simplicity's sake, but if I were then major shout-out to Obverse for making an entire anthology of the best charity anthology alums in "Burning with Optimism's Flames".)

So yeah, how does Obverse stack up in comparison? You can expect them to have a lot more new talent, given the switch to the short story format; but how do their big name lists compare?

>Big names: SBJ (novel + anthology + short stories), Dale Smith (novel + short story), Philip Purser-Hallard (5 anthologies + short stories), Kate Orman (anthology), Daniel O'Mahony (short story), George Mann (short story), Kelly Hale (short stories), Xanna Eve Chown (short story)

>Littler names: Ian Potter (short stories), Stephen Marley (short story)

And just as PPH was "noname" when he started in BotW but is now a Name To Know, I think Obverse has pulled in a lot of fantastic new authors. The novels by Lawrence Burton and Andrew Hickey are easily better than anything in the latter half of MNP's output. And equally, if you still think Aditya Bidikar and Liz Evershed are "nonames", I rather think you just haven't been paying attention.

All that said,

>>49457

I feel that so hard. I was very dismayed when I got my first physical copy from Obverse. On the one hand, I get it; they're literally a one-man operation (unlike MNP). But on the other hand … there's a "Mirrored" margin setting in Word for a reason.

Also, I still haven't gotten my contributor's copy of BotE, so.

I can't help you with the physical copy, but I'm actually in the process of reformatting their epub of BotE to be more … usable, so hmu if you want it when I'm done.

The best story so far has been The Greatest Nilso in the Galaxy because it's actually true.

 No.49839

>>49827

I've (mostly) read everything up to Part 6 of the framing story (I Recommend You Condescend, by Neo). Since I read these yesterday, the ones that stand out in memory the clearest are Deep Cover by Gallifrey Immigrant, because I find the concept hilarious; and Radical 12 by Miller, which was so utterly ridiculous and genuinely funny throughout.

Looking over the titles now, I'd like to mention Changes by Nilso. I particularly loved his envisioning of Tom Baker in Earthshock, which he said he actually had to rush and wrote very quickly. To Win Stone exceeded my expectations - I knew it was going to be good, but I think the release of the Rose novelisation was a big inspiration for Neo there, and it shows.

Honourable mentions go to Counting Stars by Nacho; Vats of Urine by Fun2Building; Nardoles All the Way Down by Gallifrey Immigrant; The Library of Antigone by The Other; and The Lives and Times of the Commonwealth Doctor by Broken Mirrors.

 No.49840

Nardoles All The Way Down was actually originally supposed to be is Shit Trips 2, back before Series 10's Nardole reinvention. I'm happy that you liked it, especially since Time Hunters aren't well-known.

The first scenario is so long-term that I don't feel able to make any sort of prediction. This would take a massive amount of time to have any sort of reasonable effect, and by that point I doubt the definition of races will exactly line up with today's. The second scenario is interesting, but I think the mechanics of how it would be enforced speak much more to how a political revolution would be enacted, much moreso than the actual race removal aspect.

This is my edition, it's just the actual text.

Yeah for a book I haven't read I nearly always leave the introduction to the end, since they're generally written with the assumption you've read the book already.

I once gave head and when the guy came, he pushed my mouth off his dick and started peeing into a bottle he had nearby. It was such a surprise that for a second I seriously worried he was going to make me drink the bottle.

Can a straight man be bi for a woman?

Does this involve drag, as opposed to transgender? I have heard of gay men being attracted to another gay man, but only when they're in drag.

Yeah, that's where fetishes come from. Whatever's stuck in your head when you're first starting to feel sexual feelings seems to be what you fixate on sexually down the road.

There was someone you fixated on at the time who's of that type. Unless you do some kind of deep-dive into the media you were consuming around 7-14 you're never going to know what it was that set you off. Childhood memories both extremely fleeting and extremely formative. It's also possible that rather than media it was a person you engaged with. Could have been a babysitter or a teacher or an older girl at school, it's things like that which stick with us.

 No.50038

>>50032

They have to be more than just strong, matronly and dignified for starters. We'd differentiate on the physical examples. I prefer blue or green eyes for instance. I do have a thing for the dark "bob" haircut though to the point of fetish. I like er goth adjacent. I'm extremely picky and have a pretty narrow band of attraction outside of say, knee jerk misogynistic objectification.
