For this particular Spearhead screencap, the key element is the non-white worker in the factory brutally contrasted against what she's producing, (hollow) commodified images of idealised white humanity. This is all from Shabgraff: http://shabogangraffiti.blogspot.com/2012/01/empire-of-vanilla.html

>This story situates the 'alien' threat within a very visible depiction of a system in which people are arranged in hierarchies based on their relations of production.

>The main monsters are emblems of workers commodified, and of the commodity itself - the product of human labour - as an alienated and hostile force.

>It depicts human production - via a capitalist factory - materialised in a form that dominates and attacks people.

>It depicts people attacked by walking media images that smash their way out of shop windows and go on the rampage in the consumerist high street, still wearing the (once) fashionable clothes they were supposed to be advertising and covered in price tags.

>This all smells strongly of an implicit critique of how people are alienated from their own labour by working for others, and from their very human image via consumerism.

>Also, the story hints that, at the apex of all this, there sits a powerful bunch of people who are fundamentally fake and fundamentally white. By putting Washington, Lincoln, King, Gandhi and a bunch of ruling-class Brits in the same room - not to mention adding LBJ and Nixon, during the era of Vietnam and only a few years after worldwide anti-war protests had peaked - the story gets very, very close to openly and implicitly critiqueing racism, imperialism and colonialism as parts of the same system.

>And the presence of the near-invisible non-white working class, busily producing units of white capitalist culture for the profit of a white man who runs a white company, threatens to openly notice how non-whites have been gobbled up as cheap labour by this system.

>The potential conclusion is that if you're a non-white worker within this system, you are subject not only the same alienation awaiting the white worker but also to another kind: the kind that sets the basic image of humanity as white and then contrasts you with it…. and sets you to work in the factory, maintaining - via the production of the commodity, i.e. capital - the very system that creates all these layers of oppression.

Season 1? It pretty quickly establishes the playbox the show is gonna be playing with for decades and you can feel everyone in charge were working for a vision instead of across them. >rani

Out of your trilogy, this one was the most successful. A beautiful story of regrets and pain, yet I think theres something wonderful to the idea that conceptually, even though clyde and rani are on different ends of the adjustment spectrum, their vices still are strong enough to keep their wheels spinning in place.

>luke

I admit, I never liked luke in sja. Its not his actor being bad, its that child geniuses are insufferable characters. Luke thinking he could be on the level of the third doctor is kind of adorable in a naive way-the difference of experience is vast; but its telling since his way of fixing government interference to weaponizing his research is to walk away.

>framing

A good transition, tonally im and neo fit like a glove here, which is the highest compliment that i can pay in their styles being so different. The shadow is kinda creepy; but i kinda wish the stakes were spelled out a little better at this point: is there a time limit to watching all the tapes? Is the shadow the one that erases people? Still, with the amount of stories here i cant blame you guys for keeping the pacing this slow.

If it was actually possible to truly remaster most of Classic Who from higher quality tapes, I would absolutely support it. But the practise of trying to fake it by adding shit and messing about with the colours (putting aside that it actually looks fairly dodgy in that youtube video) just isn't necessary. You're only getting further away from the original episodes and deeper into someone else's idea of what looks good. In the case of a story like The Web Planet, such treatment would make it even less interesting to watch.

Polly was given the last name "Wright" in the original notes for her character, but it never made it on-screen. During the 70s people assumed it was "Lopez" based on a mishearing of "The Faceless Ones", and that made it into a few guidebooks in the 90s. Anneke Wills confused everyone even more by saying that the last name was actually "Bettingham-Smith". Then Gary Russell made "Wright" canon in a VNA, and that became the definitive answer. But in Wills' 2007 autobiography, she said she's decided Polly didn't have a last name.

I think inherently every not DW range BF does has a better chance of being good than their DW stuff because

a) it's not being made to cater exclusively to boomers like their classic stuff, or zoomers like their newwho stuff

b) it's not based on a series with over 50 years of continuity and stories; they haven't squeezed all the blood out of other stones

c) there's less preconceived notions and ideologies and more freedom to try new stories because both fans and writers aren't stuck in longheld traditions

d) story format doesn't have to be "tardis arrives somewhere, dr and companion beat a monster"

Even in directly Who adjacent ranges like TW you can see the effects of this, and it's even clearer in more adjacent stuff like the Classics and Originals ranges.

Mawdryn Undead isn't canon; if you remove it you remove the entire Unit dating problem. It was meant to be Ian Chesterton instead of the Brig and it messes his life up too much. Also 13 regeneration limit thing came from here; which is to say I preferred the idea that Hartnell wasn't the 1st doctor but a few bodies in. To be clear I really quite like the story but as far as I'm concerned it's televised fan fiction.

 No.55067

>>55065

I wasn't trying to be Socratic there; I was just genuinely trying to get a read on your thoughts on S8. Now that's immaterial though since I know what they are.

The first five, maybe even six or seven episodes of S8 are widely agreed upon to inconsistently characterise 12. Capaldi mostly pushes down spottier aspects of his performance in Listen and things coast from there until the actual character starts working more specifically at some point around Caretaker/KTM/Mummy depending on one's read. I'm hesitant to imagine this inconsistent characterisation was just a result of regular first Doctor jitters given the amount of interviews where some sort of tension is alluded to indirectly through Capaldi's traditional view of the Doctor and Moffat's apparent more complicated view that had arisen by that time. I think this was a productive thing ultimately - god knows I'd have preferred a cuddly Capaldi Doctor over the black hole of characterisation that was 12 in Time Heist, but I'm happier we got a mostly more complicated Doctor in S8 and S9 at least in the end. But how nakedly specific aspects of TUAT were to Capaldi's input makes me rethink the amount of creative control Moff has talked about Capaldi having, and wonder in retrospect things he might've influenced especially in early days before he perhaps became more confident in Moffat's vision.

 No.55075

>>55072

No, he wouldn't be playing 1, he'd be an entirely new Doctor.

>>55071

A couple of reasons. I really like him as an actor and think he's do a tremendous job with an entirely new Doctor. I think it would be a hugely fascinating direction to take after 13. The idea of pushing the Doctor's age even further would necessitate shaking up the structure of the show more; he could hardly run like Jodie can. I'm enormously fascinated by the idea of casting an actor who's played a previous Doctor as a new Doctor, and he'd have more potential than the obvious choice for doing that, I think.

>>55073

I've talked about the idea on-and-off for months and months, iirc Stormy can probably verify we first chatted about it ages ago.

I can absolutely believe they made it in response to the complaints. The new one is the most deliberately memey yet, it's the first one where it feels like the memes and editing are intentionally structured to be silly (rather than just a funy accident of clips being haphazardly chosen).
