Shit Trips 2.5 is (re)released - must be Christmas!

This was a minor revision primarily fixing some formatting issues, and preparing the anthology for ebook release! Think of it like Shit Trips 2.5.1 if you like; a minor patch or update. There will be no further revisions.

Cloister, it would be very appreciated if you updated this thread >>49761 with the corrected links, as well as the "Shit Trips 2.5 NOW AVAILABLE!" header. >Profiting from the sick and desperate is unacceptable.

What an absurd statement to put in a factual news article.

All products have to be profiting off the consumer on some dimension or the company making it can't stay afloat.

Obviously excessive profiting from life-saving medication is exploitive and I consider it a huge asshole move (if not outright immoral), but whoever wrote this article seems to be too clouded by emotions to express their point logically.

The point arguably shouldn't even be in the article - it's not an editorial or an opinion piece. I'm sick as fuck of news articles trying to dictate opinion by using emotive rhetoric. Just give me the facts and let me form my own opinion, for fucks sake.

Oh and it ends with a petition to sign. Why is "Biotech News" not called "Biotech Editorial"?

I don't understand why exploiting desparate people deserves jailtime in the first place. Fine him and force the prices to reduce, sure, but why jail?

If you delete TUAT entirely but leave the ending of TDF (with 1's appearance) as it is, jumping straight to 13 falling out of the sky at the start of S11, 12's regeneration becomes the defining unsolved mystery of NuWho and arguably more kino than what we actually got purely by its sheer absence.

The brief David Bradley cameo becomes the most analysed and interpreted scene in the history of the show, with everyone trying to unlock the symbolic clues to what really happened. How much of it was real? Was it a vision of his former self guiding him to the beyond? Is the callback to The Tenth Planet a hint that 12 accepted his fate? Does the lack of a true "regeneration scene" for 12 mean he actually died and everything from S11 onwards is a dying fantasy? Which Doctor actually regenerated into Whittaker, if any (a certain trip will like that one)? Was Moffat choosing to mirror 12 with 1 ("the original, you might say") as a reflection of how little the Doctor had truly changed pre-13? Is 1's altered facial appearance a sign that this is actually the true Doctor and the one we've been following all these years is a doppelganger?

The regeneration scene has become like a changing of the guard for British culture. People who don't typically watch the show tune in just to see the regeneration, which is fucking bizarre when you think about it, but that's the bind we're in. This means that in order to satisfy the culture's whims and the BBC's desire for its spending to pay off as popularity:

- it has to be announced in advance

- it has to take place at the end of the episode because people will change channels once it's happened

- we have to physically see the moment one Doctor becomes the next

- the moment of regeneration has to be the first time we properly see the new one, like the tradition of keeping future spouses apart in the leadup to the wedding

- (Optional: it has to take place in a big special, on a memorable date like Christmas, so people don't forget when to tune in)

This is, in effect, the reason it is impossible to do anything clever with a regeneration. Moffat took two cracks at it with Capaldi's early cameo in DotD and Matt's late cameo in Deep Breath, but now that's been done any repeats will feel derivative, and there's not much else that will work. The regeneration is no longer narrative television, it has been reduced to a desperate navigation of the capitalist meta-event which has subsumed it.

Adore this, but one change I would make is intentionally not including the WEAT regeneration fightback in the show to be reprised at the end of TDF. That way people can choose to believe he did succumb to regeneration there and it actually took place after the Bradley encounter (imagined or otherwise), filling in the "had a glowy gold regeneration" quota.

>>55365

I don't even have particularly high hopes creatively for the future of NewWho but I am 100% sure regeneration culture as you describe it will be subverted sooner rather than later. It's too easy a target at this point, and there will always be showrunners who want to make a mark by very tangible changes like that.

Daleks don't behave reasonably. The Doctor could have minimised their destruction by not stealing a Tardis and dicking about over time in the first place, or killing them all in Genesis, but opted not to.

 No.55562

But they do behave reasonably at first in The Daleks. Besides, your argument boils down to: the doctor shouldnt have gone to a place he didnt know he shouldnt have gone and interacted with people he didnt know were genocidal freaks at first glance and the daleks are blameless because theyre always genocidal freaks that never try to be better than the genocidal freaks they are while the doctor does eventually become a better person. And them being genocidal freaks means they should be allowed to invade other planets with no doctor interference? Or time lord interference at all?(not that anyone would get any- too busy pickiny out lavish robes)

 No.55563

>>55562

Right. Timelords have strict rules about messing around in time because you might encounter a race of genocidal freaks, and inadvertently help their genocide grow from the scale of a planet, to the scale of a universe.

Also, I don't think it was ever established that the Timelords don't interfere. They were more than happy to put a stop to the growth of the Daleks when it became apparent what a problem they would become. The Timelords don't interfere recklessly.

The doctor's only had… What, 100 or so different adventures with the time lords locked away, the rest of the time he actually was doing things that would have required time lord intervention but didnt. Its telling that in The War Games the second doctor goes "there's shit going down in the galaxy that needs to be fixed", and rather than have a whole race of Doctors fix it all at once they instead the doctor go to fix it all himself.

I'd be totally down for it coming up in a novelisation, but a bit less enthusiastic if it was used in the main show. It's a cool idea that illustrates how the Doctor could easily have turned out like the Master, but it only leads directly to the origin of the Master if you also include the Death's Champion bit which a) hasn't had any work done to establish it in NuWho b) is a bit more mystery-removing than I'd prefer for the show anyway and c) risks being a bit reductive of the Master's motivations, similarly to RTD's "he went mad from the 4 knocks!" thing, if not handled correctly. And if you don't include that bit then it just seems like a puzzling event from their childhoods with no clear connection to the present.

Fuck that, as someone who just wrote a shit trip with an extended stay on Gallifrey, their Society and Mythos are boring as watching paint chip. Not even dry, but chip. To me it kind of links up to the original Star Trek series where all of the man versus God stories were always boring as Sin. Gallifrey being a sort of high society disconnected from the universe where all of their greatest Feats are off-screen means that they're just a bunch of out of touch aristocrats. Personally I made the whole thing an analogy to World War I Society, where soldiers would come home with shell shock and fundamentally couldn't understand the trauma of being in the trenches, fighting for a society that won't accept them when it's all over. At least not what they've become. That's kind of what Gallifrey is to the doctor.

I wouldn't mind, but it's not even real Nationalism. Half of the teams aren't from their own countries. It's surrogate Nationalism, catering for an underlying desire of men to have something to belong to and believe in that has been going unfulfilled. Kind of gross really. Like an a-social virgin relying on anime for comfort.

Intentionally or unintentionally, everything is symbolic. Accidental or seemingly unfitting elements can be some of the most interesting, because the unconscious ideas and associations they provide operate on a weirder and more difficult level than the obvious ones the writer was actually thinking about.

Sarff is actually a cracked mirror of various concepts in the story.

>Sarff is a democracy that votes on all of its actions and then conducts all of its activities in unison - an ironic opposite to the Daleks who cannot even process dissent and nonconformity (to the point where their operating system translates all thoughts into Exterminate)

>Sarff's central big snake is a kind of Hybrid - mostly snake, but with vestigial human eyes and mouth

>Sarff is the closest thing in the story to an actual witch's familiar i.e. a shapeshifting animal servant to dark occult purposes; this contrasts his relationship with Davros (explicitly worker and employer, master and attack dog) to that of Clara with 12/Missy. Neither Davros nor Missy can have a true 'companion' because all they can do is use people as resources. However, remove the emotional bond from 12/Clara and their increasingly dangerous collaboration could easily mutate into something similar (S8 was all about looking at this troubling potential in the companion dynamic).

>Sarff assumes the illusion of a human in order to fool people into identifying with it and letting it into social environments etc; likewise Davros must construct a performance out of his own humanity in his attempt to provoke compassion from the Doctor

>A huge theme of the Daleks is the relationship between technology and the flesh; Sarff's main job is to act as a kind of organic cable and a conduit for life essence itself (regen energy). Daleks and Davros are so removed from the organic world that they have to exploit forms found in nature like the snake to interface with living flesh (the Doctor)

>Davros uses the snakes' natural predatory abilities (their constriction) to forcibly acquire and detain resources (i.e. the Doctor), in the same way he wishes to exploit the natural resource of the Doctor to assist the Daleks' imperialist project; it could be said their chief sin in this story is the abuse of nature

>Sarff is knocked out(/killed?) via shock when Missy blasts the hyperspace relay, in other words the energy it's attempting to exploit overflows and backfires when resistance is raised - similarly to how the Doctor's regeneration energy proves too much for the Dalek city when it overflows into the sewers, provoking resistance in turn - and by turning themselves into channels for the theft of resources, the snakes turn the natural advantage of their shape into a fatal vulnerability. The tool of the imperialist subjects itself to a fundamentally unsafe power relationship.

Silly argument. The whole point is to take a familiar period of history, and introduce an alien element. If everything's up in the air then Victorian London can be full of Starbucks' and McDonalds'. it's just a dumb fantasy show about bug eyed monsters. It's not real.

 No.55854

>>55853

This show's had an episode in victorian london with a man imprinted with the mind of an alien(where the episode before it was implied the same thing burned human brains alive) fighting a multistory giant robot controlled by a partially robot brained victorian woman in a hot air balloon. If they made a joke about ye olde starbucks it would be on the more believable end on things for that doctor who story.

 No.55855

>>55854

You're missing the point. The robots and aliens are the out of place fantasy element. They're supposed to make the viewer say "woah, that doesn't fit there. What's going on?". Totally different to just having people who don't belong in certain periods of history hanging out there with no explanation.

Now, you could write a story where some time meddler made it so Africans were integrated into British society sooner, and explore the effects of that, and that could actually be the basis for an interesting story.

Rewatched The Beast Below.

I do think that the idea in the core of the episode is magnificent, and it has some very effective scenes: the ending is obvious example, Matt's performance and that hug are fantastic.

I love the first scene in the market where Doctor instantly identifies that it's a police state, writing-wise it's a great hook and it's mysterious and IMO it's a step up from lots of classic "overthrow government" stories.

It has lots of ideas, but there's one thing that ruins the impression:

production.

The sets are small and very unenthusiastic. The market, the engine room, the road segment under repair, the Tower all look small and uninspired. For this kind of episode good sets are necessity - the scale of the ship plays big role in understanding it, the atmosphere of the market could help a lot with setting up the tone of dark totalitarian society with a secret in its heart, but it's just okay, very boring, almost no visible attempt to do something to help the scene working.

I know Doctor Who can't allow big budget, but there were lots of examples of cool set design with restricted budget. But when an episode required all the inspiration and creativity to make it great, it wasn't there.

Victory of the Daleks does some of the worst sets too - Daleks' spaceship is a literal warehouse.

Lets get this out of the way right now: t.Nilso

A few general thoughts: Nilso's avoidance of the iconic moments of stories provides a bit of a missed opportunity, and while it really would have led to the unfortunate extra comparison to the original stories I none the less would have relished how Pertwee would have handled the scene that comes to mind when people mention his story. Ahem.

The consequence of the concept is unfortunately a lot of Dalek stories, but its far from a gripe since you laser in on the ending(which ill get to in the individual story thoughts)

None the less in focusing on how the ending differs we get a great peek into what that season would have been like, fantastically characterized and bold, subtle changes in the scenes keep the pacing quick and satisfying. And not including the new doctor's first words is a sublime tease.

>1

Having said that, theres a fundamental problem both in and out of your control in the first story since this is obviously a majority missing story. From a meta standpoint i understand why, but with the leeway of the original regen happening partway through 4 i think you would have been fine going up to victoria's first completed story, Tomb. It just makes the whole scene hard to picture since all we have as a frame of reference is Hartnell's tardis room.

That said there's a lot to like here: hartnell's wisdom and warmth shine through and his revelation that they are taking Victoria holds so much gravitas. One's relationship with Jamie feels great and ultimately sets up the tragedy of the regeneration well. The glass slipping is heartbreaking, saying a lot with very little. Bravo.

>2

I get it. But perhaps including a screen of troughton or that image from the comic of him regenerating would have been good.

>3

Your focus here almost makes Davros a non entity, which makes sense later considering you have another dalek story to do(and to be reasonable, thank you for not going with Revenge. So bad); but for the life of me I cant tell if it is brilliant or mad to take one of the most violent stories, with one of the most physical doctors, and there isnt any physicality? Not bringing him back to UNIT like planet of the spiders did is a little disappointing too; but I do understand that one as a writer and not wanting to retread that scene.

If theres one thing I think really hit the nail on the head its Harry. Him natually having more to do in a Pertwee tem makes him feel vital.

>4

Now here is a triumph. First off, not flashing to adric for the last words and focusing on the doctor's lingering regrets feels right. Second, the extra action adds tension here: jumping and diving action hero nyssa is a great, desperate step. The extra speed adds pacing, leading to more breathing room in the aftermath as things come to a grinding halt. Not including the followup, now theres something where a bit to the imagination was so important. Excellent.

>5

I know 6 changes his jacket here, but that's given a reason in story. Instead you use the jacket change to make 5 more subtly dynamic. Nothing wrong with that in a continuity where 5 would be more dynamic in a post-caves.

I do think you were a bit too faithful elsewhere:doing a bit more with Peri would have helped things along, maybe having her comment in horror with disgust at the corpse in the room and add human perspective to make davros's later disgust even more dynamic.

Using Davros in all his glory here and saving him for the end is a master stroke. Some may balk at the idea of doing genesis without Davros, but having the vision to see he's needed more here is important, and intentionally or not creates a sort of story arc as you get closer and closer to their ultimate confrontation, framing this last story as important in context.

In all, a very strong set of stories. Great job Nilso!

I'd spoken to Neo for a bit before submission about how the stories I'd chosen to be the official "end of season" were actually a bit wonky in regards to their placing in their respective seasons - if I'd had it 100% accurate, it would have ended up as Evil of the Daleks / Inferno / Revenge of the Cybermen / Time-Flight and Revelation of the Daleks. Some of these stories seem like a terrible jumping off point in regards to a regeneration, so I think Revenge and Time-Flight benefit from being changed to Genesis and Earthshock, respectively. I hadn't noticed that a majority of the stories were centred around Dalek stories until you mentioned it. On the topic of first/last words, I was intending to give each incarnation new versions of each but decided against it because I thought it was dumb, and also very much a New-Who thing (I know every Doctor's had a last line but it's only New Who that's really gone overboard with it and formed it into some grand monologue - sometimes, more is less, but seeing Troughton say "Miss Shaw, if there's anything I've ever taught you that you need to understand right now is… no matter what, always trust your Doctor" would be ridiculous.

The fact that Evil of the Daleks is missing is quite a pain in the ass because there's nothing to reference visually for Episode 7 bar some CGI recreations and very grainy telesnaps. For the most part, I based the visualisation of the fauna and flora on the first Cushing movie, while the clifftop stuff was put together from the brief shot of the TARDIS at the start of Tomb of the Cybermen. I see what you're saying by hypothetically moving 1's regeneration up to Tomb, but I think that Evil would better suit such an event. Talking about "events", I wasn't sure whether or not to attribute the 1st Doctor's regeneration to exhaustion or being injured when Victoria's father was killed off-screen. One and Jamie's relationship felt like a natural thing on the lines of a grandfather/grandson bond, and it's a shame that neither of them were on screen together.

Fun fact - I spent all of five minutes on Part 2's image, but the actual part itself was a nightmare. I had no idea at all how to go about it, and it shows. The original idea was to have the Primords defeated by the Brigadier, Liz and Sutton, and Liz would then notice on the control consoles in the main operations room that there had been a giant energy fluctuation in the Doctor's shed. Once the Brigadier and Liz arrive, they find that the Doctor had been shot by the Brigade Leader before had left the parallel Earth. Two would then regenerate. It seems like a simple plot path but I had a great deal of trouble forming it into a coherent passage. I was tempted to skip it entirely, and in retrospect, I think I probably should have.

>>55927

The initial version of the Genesis section was a pain in the arse to write as well; the flashback scene wasn't there, there was no section about the Security Outpost and there was no mention of their passage through the swamp. I had written a section about them watching Davros' assassination of the Scientists but I didn't like it very much so it was taken out. I also added in the sections of Bettan finding the dead Youth Reserve Force members because of a vivid memory of a film I saw several years ago I can’t remember the name of where someone came across the dead bodies of a group of very young officers who’d died in a gas attack. The image had stuck with me, and I thought that if I wrote the section I’d remember the name of the film (I didn’t.) The original version of the story had Bettan become a companion who’d eventually take Harry’s place in Terror of the Zygons, allowing her to join UNIT. Harry would have stayed through Planet of Evil until Hand of Fear, where he’d have left with Sarah. A majority of the character names of the Thal Guerrillas were original, but Madoc was chosen to be homage to Philip Madoc who played The War Lord in The War Games.

Earthshock took about 15 minutes to write, and the choice to not include anything from Adric’s POV was deliberate as I wanted to have the whole section take place in one room and in one continual shot. The inclusion of a second backup plan was supposed to tie in with Attack of the Cybermen, and would have been back referenced if I’d have written about that story as well. The decision to have Tegan get concussed was to level the playing field somewhat; if the Doctor, Tegan AND Nyssa attacked the Cyber Leader in one go they’d have overpowered him much quicker, and the regeneration may not have occurred. With Tegan out the picture, the Doctor and Nyssa would have struggled a LOT more. Another version that I’d thought about putting in would have featured the Cyber Leader actually fracturing the Doctor’s shoulder, but I thought it to be a bit over the top so it wasn’t added. I’m not a fan of his last words, and if I’d have given it a bit more thought I could have done something better with it.

The name “Kara van der Becke” was going to be used in a story I didn’t end up writing featuring the Full Fathom Five Unbound Doctor, so I included it as a personal nod. The base image of Davison changing his coat was meant to be representative of the David Peterson image that was on the wiki at some point, which I personally view to be a genuinely brilliant upgrade. The back-and-forth between the Doctor and Davros was great fun to write, and the decision to make Davros’ injury much more visceral was also fun. The reference to a statue of Aphrodite was a reference to the statue in the Waiting Room in Twin Peaks. If it wasn’t clear, both Takis and Lilt are exterminated off-screen by the Grey Daleks, and the two guards (Larei and Hardyn) are based on the 20’s comedians Laurel and Hardy (who I love unreservedly.)

When I submitted the Revelation of the Daleks section to Neo I was going to say that I’d soon have the Colin Baker version of Dragonfire along to him as soon as possible, but time didn’t permit me to do this, so that was left out. Since you’ve not seen that one, I’ll mention that Kane was fleshed out and given a much better position to argue from, Glitz was made a bit more morally skewed, and Mel was actually given something to do for once. Six, Glitz and Mel would have started off in a large plaza full of dead bodies left by Kane’s mercenaries, and they would have heard Kane telling them to come to the control room to collect Ace “before the stock goes past its sell-by date.” Once there, the Doctor would reveal to the audience that Kane was a narcotics dealer and human trafficker in the Sirius Galaxy and the son of one of Proamon’s largest criminal families. Six would also mention several events relevant to Proamon’s history such as “The Ice Conquests” and “The Fifteen-Day Scourge”. Kane would reveal that he has at least ten thousand more frozen criminals below Iceworld and that he’d return to Proamon and enslave the entire populace. The Doctor would reveal that Proamon is dead, and Kane would fly into a fit, grabbing hold of the Doctor’s neck and try to strangle him. Ace would see one of Kane’s lieutenant’s dead bodies and take their gun, shooting Kane in the back; Kane would have opened the filter and stepped into it with the Doctor, burning the Doctor alive and evaporating Kane. The sunlight would destroy the main console along with the Dragonfire crystal, causing the Iceworld spacecraft to explode but not before the Doctor, Ace, Glitz and Mel escape to the TARDIS.

I had a great time writing these, and I wish that I’d written the FFF Doctor or Shatterpoint, or any of the alt-doctors I thought of. If we do an alt-Doctor Shit Trips again I’ll 100% do something with them, and I might just write Shatterpoint anyway.
