 No.56786

I think when we discussed it earlier this year we decided it was still too early to make the hype train (and doubly so thanks to the lack of info on S11). I'd say when the first trailer and stuff comes out, then we can think about it.

It would be very odd to have mashup style editing interrupting the narration at inconsistent points. The actors' performances may not even slot well into the written text, or they might lack nuances that the novelisation is trying to add. And then whenever you have to jump back to the narrator doing the voices, you'll be constantly comparing it to the original voice clips, rather than just getting used to the narrator.

Anyway at its core a novelisation is a rewrite and reinterpretation of the source material, trying to morph it into some kind of multimedia chimera in an attempt to directly translate the source material is a dead end.

"Back to *normal*, am I? The only time I've been a man, that last body. Dear Lord, how do you cope with all that ego??" - Given that Time Lords are truly gender-less "souls", the idea of there being a "normal" is canon-breaking for the sake of what the rest of that statement is, which is pure MISANDRY. - Just imagine the writers putting a scene in where a Time Lord regenerates from a female body into a male one, and the line goes: "Back to normal, am I? The only time I've been a women, that last body. Dear Lord, how do you cope with all the over-emotional drama, jealousy, and passive aggressiveness??" Guessing that wouldn't go down so well, now would it…? - Perhaps it would be better to promote that which the Doctor always has: messages that bring us *together*, rather than normalising the belittling of certain groups, especially given your predominantly young impressionable audience?

"There isn't a stun setting" "Why not?" "The writers really want to make a political point by having me turn into a black woman"

>tfw Sesska starts the Nardole era in 3 weeks

 No.57057

Much is made out of how Husbands of River Song fits with Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, but I think the more interesting point is how it sort of doesn't. At the climax of Forest, River seems surprised to realise that the Doctor always knew how she was going to die. But Husbands goes out of its way to suggest that River already suspects the Doctor knows how she ends up. There is a huge sense of finality in the episode culminating in 12 declaring that he's going to at last settle down with her for 24 years (which really ought to be a fucking red flag). Plus SitL River doesn't really show any signs of having just lived with the Doctor for 24 years anyway.

In practice this is Moffat going back and editing his tragic story to make it into a happier one. However, what occurs to me is that this might even be true in-universe. Remember time can be rewritten in Moffat Who. Who's to say the version of River's life we see play out in Husbands is actually the exact same one that led to Silence in the Library as we saw it? Who's to say SitL River actually experienced Husbands the exact way we saw it?

12 might not be able to change the outcome and save River, but he could at least perform the act of healing that he feels she deserves, resolving the fundamental tragedy of their relationship (which has been clear to him from the outset) by finally making a commitment and spending a long time together with her. I posit that him choosing to do so was actually an alteration from the original timeline and that the "true" version of SitL/FotD is now subtly different to the televised episode.

Nardole is not only not a companion in Husbands, the premise of him being a companion (and staying at the uni like you mentioned, something else that wasn't added until later) was not even a gleam in Moffat's eye when he wrote it under the belief that he was about to be allowed to quit the show. Mysterio was the point at which Nardole was revised to work as a companion and is thus the official beginning of the Nardole Era.

I am. The love for Tennant in particular verged on fetishistic. Smith was on the heels of one of the show's most beloved eras and no-one had any confidence that following up Tennant could even be done. And if Moffat had tried to just copy Tennant/Davies at that point it would have looked like a hollow imitation and killed the show; he had to prove in one stroke that the radically different show people feared could still be entirely compelling.

Compare to 8 years later. We might be mourning the Capaldi era but not many others are. The show has waned in people's attention span, it's gotten long in the tooth, it's seen as stale, and it's been on long enough that people are used to the idea that you can fuck about with it and it still basically works. We're not in a situation where a radical, bold new vision needs to be demonstrated in order to prove it can compete with the previous one - people don't care any more.

The backlash about a female Doctor is purely petty and superficial, the kind of indignance that will fall away in layers as soon as it becomes obvious that it's still Doctor Who and you might as well just watch it because she don't need to possess a cock to act like one.

Chibnall's real challenge isn't to save the show from female-caused cancellation, but to actually revitalise it from the slump Moffat let it fall into (which would have been true even if 13 was male). If anything the momentary scandal of a female Doctor does more work to get eyes back on the show again and make it feel relaunched.

>adric is inherently clever

>adric just wants to see and learn more

>adric stows away

>the doctor agrees to take him in

>the doctor DRASTICALLY changes and his entire ego is shattered and replaced with something new

>adric is literally ALONE in the universe and the only familiar sights that he has are the clothes on his own back and a big blue box and a fairy chemist princess and a loud earth woman whom he'd met five minutes prior to his only friend in the whole of creation falling from a very violent height

>adric continues to actually be clever

>adric really is clever

>adric is a CHILD and if he is prideful or elitist then it is only because he was a CHILD

The Doctor COULD have worked to calmly teach Adric to reign in his hubris but instead just got angry at Adric and yelled back in his face as if he, the Doctor, were ALSO a child. And in the end Adric's arrogance got the better of him and he didn't leave the space freighter because he thought that he could stop the crash and that got him killed, and it is, ultimately, the Doctor's own fault for acting like a child instead of an adult.

The fact it was a smash hit success posed an extreme problem for the followup, because now he was trying to play up to that and respond to audiences' interest. The show became about nursing its fans' love for it, and the characterisation of the Doctor essentially became a spectacle of awe, superiority, and "wonderfulness" rather than something defined by a coherent system of values or consistent inner personality

You said that working class POCs, as an entire group, tend to support left wing causes. You pointed out that this applied to the 'many' socially conservative ones as well, as an aside remark that you inserted into the middle of the sentence. It's nothing but a broad generalisation that serves no purpose other than to support your point, which treats them like a pawn in your game of how to install communism.

>there is more to the way a person thinks and behaves than their political views

the scope of this discussion that you initiated is just their political views. This is not relevant to the point you were trying to make, and bring it up now to save face is pointless.

It's not a broad generalisation because I'm not creating some stereotype of POCs from personal experience. I have actual stastical evidence to back it up:

https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017/09/07/democratic-voters-are-increasingly-likely-to-call-their-views-liberal/

>This year, 40% of black Democrats call themselves moderate, 30% say they are conservative and 28% call themselves liberal.

>Among Hispanic Democratic voters, 36% describe their political views as moderate, 41% as liberal and 22% as conservative.

Compared to:

>This year, 55% of white Democratic and Democratic-leaning registered voters identify themselves as liberal, while 35% describe themselves as moderate and 8% as conservative.

http://cpsblog.isr.umich.edu/?p=948

>90% of African Americans identify as Democrats and 55% strongly so, compared to 39% and 11% of Whites. Yet, when the authors looked at a 7-point measure of ideology, only 47% of Blacks identify as liberal while 45% identify as conservative in the United States.

https://www.citylab.com/life/2016/06/american-working-class-demographics-study-economic-policy-institute/486101/

POCs are overrepresented amongst the American working class, and they are growing.

Combine those statistics and it's pretty clear.

In countries other than America:

https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/samesex-marriage-result-huge-no-votes-in-multicultural-electorates-20171115-gzlm0o.html

Predominately Muslim areas vote in left-wing candidates, but also vote against same sex marriage.

http://politics.oxfordre.com/view/10.1093/acrefore/9780190228637.001.0001/acrefore-9780190228637-e-238

Evidence from other countries confirms that ethnic minorities, including foreign-born individuals, tend to support left-wing political parties. These parties are usually perceived as more sympathetic to minorities’ interests, and more committed to promoting their policy preferences. For instance, in the United Kingdom the effects of ethnicity in national elections are larger in magnitude than any of the other measures of social cleavages, such as class or religion (Heath et al., 2011). What is more, ethnic minorities are more than twice as likely to support the Labour Party as White British voters. Similarly, in other European countries ethnic minorities are more likely to vote for left-of-center parties than other voters (e.g., Bergh & Bjørklund, 2011).

Hell Bent is partially about a rebirth of the Doctor and an "origin story" of Clara, so locating it within the most mythic location in the series (and the point of the Doctor's own origin) was only appropriate. Gallifrey also served the role of illustrating the lengths the Doctor was prepared to go in his desperation.

And the search for Gallifrey culminating in betrayal, disappointment, and re-abandonment is possibly the truest Moffat could possibly have been to its history within Doctor Who.

We do this for the love so we fight and sacrifice every night

So we ain't gonna stumble and fall never

Waiting to see us in a sign of defeat uh uh

So we gonna keep everyone moving they feet

So bring back the beat and then everyone sing

It's not about the money

It's not about the money money money

We don't need your money money money

We just wanna make the world dance

Forget about the price tag

Ain't about the uh cha-ching cha-ching

Ain't about the yeah b-bling b-bling

Wanna make the world dance
