1. It Takes a Thief by John Dorney

The French Riviera has always provided rich pickings for the aristocratic cat-burglar. Lady Christina is enjoying the high life while adding to her collection.

But when suspicion falls on her after a robbery-turned-murder, Christina decides to catch the culprit herself…

2. Skin Deep by James Goss

Sylvia Noble always knew she deserved better. So, when a chance encounter with aristocracy propels her out of Chiswick and into high society, she’s delighted.

But the beautiful people have their own agenda – and Christina is surprised when those plans involve her father.

3. Portrait of a Lady by Tim Dawson

When her plot to steal a priceless painting runs into trouble, Christina crashes into an undercover UNIT operation – and Sam Bishop.

Soon, her Number 200 bus is racing from Europe to South America and into the depths of the Pacific, chasing a mysterious and unstoppable foe…

4. Death on the Mile by Donald McLeary

Lady Christina has been offered a job: the heist of a lifetime. She simply has to break into Edinburgh Castle.

At the same time, UNIT are investigating alien activity at the Military Tattoo. And where there’s treasure and treachery, there are also Slitheen…

 No.58331

Remember that time 12 intentionally goaded Bill into so much emotional stress, mistrust and trauma that she shot him in an attempt to murder him. Then he pretended to die in front of her, then laughed, then got a whole room full of other men to laugh along at her as well? Don't forget that to get Bill into that situation, he spent months after months performing propaganda to help invading alien dictators send thousands of people to die in labor camps.

This is who Toby Whithouse thinks the Doctor is.

The only evidence of there being anything missing/lost aired is the TV guide which has a mysterious gap saved for "The Lost Episode", which is around the length of a six-part serial.

Shada was six parts, edited into a full-length movie for the animated release. The title "the lost episode" implies there's only a single thing being aired, which seemingly goes against the fact that many episodes are missing. Shada's DVD release was marketed as the "lost" Doctor Who story because it was simply never finished, and it makes perfect sense to market it as that to casuals as they don't know what the fuck a Shada is.

I would like to be proven wrong and have them show a formerly missing story, but I think it makes much more sense to apply it to Shada.

He always had reasons to distance himself from his people because they were corrupt and out to get him and shit. They make him their leader, and he still runs, rather than do what he can to make life on Gallifrey better?

 No.58589

 No.58590

I've been thinking. Maybe one of the reasons Doctor Who lost steam in the 80's, is that once the Doctor reconciles with his people, the initial storyline is kind of over and done with.

I wonder if the Doctor having reconciled his guilt over the time war (which has really been the driving motive of the character since the reboot) is going to have similar effects.

 No.58591

>>58590

I would argue that gallifrey/time lord culture are not an important aspect of nuwho, and not something that audiences tune in to watch and see resolved. Even the search for gallifrey was never really presented as some ongoing quest, it just kind of happened. The portion of fans that did actually care about gallifrey were disappointed about how it was handled, but the rest of the audience continued to not care. It's an aspect of doctor who lore but not a selling point of the show.

 No.58592

>>58591

Sure, it's an episodic show in nature, but I think just the idea that the character has something driving him does add something. Whether it's a mystery, rebellion, or grief.

Something's missing when its just a guy milling about in space. It's like a super hero without an origin story.

 No.58593

>>58592

chibbers knows how to make event television - he probably has a good chance of developing some kind of hook that keeps general audiences wanting to keep up with the show. I don't think the time war will be relevant to it.

 No.58594

>>58591

The search for Gallifrey was something that NuWho fans had been primed for since the first series. It was not just a "Classic fan" thing, but the culmination of years of buildup, that the NuWho fans had been following. I like Hell Bent, but the way that Gallifrey's re-appearance was downplayed is a grievance that more than just Classic fans had.

The Twelve genuinely verges me, hard.

So, the Twelve is the regenerated form of the villain from Doom Coalition and Ravenous (the Eleven).

Look, I get the idea of doing boxsets far off in 8’s future while still doing one’s in his “present”; part of the whole idea of doing stories with past Doctors is that audiences tolerate that kind of thing. But when you literally, explicitly use elements that nullify active story elements in those “present” boxsets, it feels like a joke, like there’s absolutely zero point in investing at all.

Why should I care about the Eleven fighting 8 when I know exactly what will happen thanks to a press release about a boxset set further in 8’s future at all. What is the point of these “present 8” boxsets besides giving Nicola Walker consistent work, when BF have said 8’s Time War volumes are still far before Night of the Doctor, and they contain so many of the same elements as these boxsets anyway, except with some modicum of dramatic stakes? It’s all just going through the motions, and that is tremendously boring. It exemplifies so much of what I despise about modern BF.

I'm all for dragging BF but this seems a bit petty, I've never been a fan of the "there can't be dramatic stakes if we know the outcome in advance" school of thought.

 No.58758

>>58748

This is an incoherent comparison because Classic Who was produced before NewWho. The crux of the issue with BF is that they are producing plot-based audios occupying vastly different times in the Eighth Doctor's life while hinging dramatic stakes on audience investment in the outcomes. I haven't criticised The Time War volumes obviously leading into The Night of the Doctor because Briggs Finish are old hands at developing characters into future versions that appear on television episodes produced before the audios they're creating are; even modern Briggs Finish remains more than competent at that. The actual equivalent that comes to mind is the 4DAs announcing a companion that won't appear "on screen" for three years; but the nature of that range (not half as serialised or plot-heavy as the modern 8 adventures) negates most of any potential issue with that; it's more of just an amusing byproduct of BF's workflow with Tom. No, producing concurrent plot-based series from the same character where the plots they hinge the marketing speak on fold in on themselves because that very marketing speak makes a bizarre effort to negate their stakes before those stakes are even raised is something new.

>>58753

The Time War audios effectively share no continuity with Ravenous, Doom Coalition, Dark Eyes, the 8DAs, or the monthlies. All you need is to have seen The Night of the Doctor.

>>58754

They genuinely do. His actions and really even his existence is a key dramatic point; the fact he lives to regenerate and cause trouble for 8 in his far, far future takes a tremendous amount of wind out of the sails of the "current" narrative. This isn't a case of Briggs Finish doing the Better Call Saul route and mining genuine dramatic stakes out of being a prequel; this is them tripping over themselves in making so much fucking content they're starting to literally "overwrite" things.

>As the Time War gets more treacherous the Time Lords and Daleks become more desperate and they’ll use anything and anyone at their disposal… the Doctor and Bliss can only hope to avoid the crossfire.

>Writer of the last story in this box set, Timothy X Atack, hinted at what lies ahead of the Eighth Doctor in June’s Vortex magazine: “While he’s still very definitely the Eighth incarnation we know and love, the pre-echoes are present, the clues are there as to what he will become that night on Karn.

>“There are moments in Jonah where I hope you see it… where the Doctor’s future is laid bare, and he faces a soul-shaking premonition of the terrors ahead…”

2.1 THE LORDS OF TERROR by Jonathan Morris

When the Doctor takes Bliss to her home colony, they discover that the Time War has got there first. Bliss finds her world altered beyond recognition, and the population working to serve new masters.

No dissent is allowed. The Daleks are coming. The planet must be ready to fight them.

2.2 PLANET OF THE OGRONS by Guy Adams

Avoiding the Time War, the Doctor and Bliss are found by an old acquaintance: the latest incarnation of a criminal mastermind the Doctor knows of old. But unlike her predecessors, the Twelve has a handle on her previous selves’ unruly minds.

There is a mystery to solve, involving the Doctor’s TARDIS and its unusual occupant – and answers will be found on the Planet of the Ogrons.

2.3 IN THE GARDEN OF DEATH by Guy Adams

In a prison camp like no other, the Most Dangerous Man in the Universe is held in isolation.

The rest of the inmates have no memory of who they were or what they might have done. No memory even of their captors. Until the interrogations begin.

2.4 JONAH by Timothy X Atack

In the depths of an ocean world, ravaged by the Time War, the weary survivors are pressed into service by Cardinal Ollistra.

Something is hidden beneath the sea: the Twelve knows thetruth, if only she could drag it from her jumbled mind. And when the Doctor becomes the captain of a submarine boat, all omens spell disaster…

I think it's because the questioning-companion, answering-Doctor dynamic is actually used to effect, and dramatic one at that. Also makes the companion more relatable, you could just as easily be in their position, and gives the Doctor the wise, all-knowing aspect we've associated with him but don't really see in action all that often. The delivery is important as well: Tennant's in RotC implies that he's seen them before and that they're in grave danger - he's scared for himself and others. It's tension-building as fuck.

5's era is much more consistent than 4's, but 4 hit higher highs. After the wonky William's era and the slightly boring Season 18, The Visitation/Black Orchid/Earthshock is just lovely.
