fuck no they're interesting on multiple levels

Nilso is 100% pro Dalek

Good good. Strikes me as kinda juvenile to dismiss them out of hand.

Reminder the Time Lords were the aggressors and the Daleks were just retaliating to protect themselves.

Will the trailer happen after the game or at half time?

it'll be on youtube marginally after by official or unofficial means

How have your thoughts on Thirteen's outfit changed over time, /who/? For me, I'm still put off by the sterility of the coat. It has the same uncanny-valley-but-for-clothes effect that Five's beige monstrosity does.

I don't like it, but I despised Matt's first costume and still managed to love his Doctor too.

That being said, I'd love to see the picture Jodie saw and was inspired by. I'd also be convinced by the way it looks onscreen and in motion.

>sterility of the coat

I've never thought of using that word but it fits really well

overall I do like the outfit, but the coat feels so flat - like it's a cheap halloween costume rather than a tailor made piece of clothing. It doesn't have any shape to it like the frock coats of previous doctors

I like it a bit more now.. Still won't have my final opinion until I see it in motion. When I seen Matts first on set pics I hated his but ended up liking it as the series progressed

I'm hoping for some minor changes throughout the series

desu I think the tweed irreparably damaged the brand honestly

Series 11 will be TLJ of Who wont it?

S11 will be S7: Part 3

S9 = /who/

S10 = r/gallifrey

S11 = /doctorwho/

Will it subvert your expectations?

S12 - planet mondas

While I like other Doctor's regeneration "moments" better, the Seventh Doctor's cause of regeneration is easily, easily my favourite. So poetic.

Yes, /who/ IS being negative

in general, not necessarily here

Where? Link in this thread?

Its kino. The great mastermind and manipulator mown down in a hail of bullets he could have prevented if he wasn't so egotistical and checked the damn scanner

And he was all alone too. It's absolutely perfect, and more effortless in how perfect it is compared to how hard Moff tried to make 8's ending very poetic and fitting for that Doctor (which I like fwiw, just saying you could feel Moff trying hard to set that up, whereas the TVM seems to do it so breezily).

what reason do you have to believe that the negativity about S11 is the majority opinion and not just a minority propagated and sensationalised by the people most offended by it?

File: cbd47bf03e74b4e⋯.png (54.71 KB, 695x337, 695:337, who discord.png)

This, majority opinion is definitely positive and the viewing numbers will show that soon enough. Even on /who/. the majority opinion is clearly positive too.

I get the impression a lot of them are literal children/underage which contextualises it a bit at least.

Anyone else keeping up with bookclub?

That was possibly me. I always manage to trick myself into thinking a Dalek story will be good before watching or listening but most times I end up hating Dalek stories by the middle of the story. Some Dalek stories I do like are Power of the Daleks, Genesis of the Daleks, Remembrance of the Daleks, Dalek, The Parting of the Ways, Magicians Apprentice/Witches Familiar and Jubilee but the vast majority of Dalek stories are so bad that it has conpletely put me off them for now. If I found out series 11 had a Dalek episode I would not be excited for it in the slightest

Oh I meant the morality of the Daleks not the quality of their stories!

I just wanted to make a pun, I wasn’t the first anon talking about this and I don’t agree with them

People are VERY quick to judge the Daleks. Just saying.

Frankly, there's violence on both sides. Anti-Daleks can't claim the moral high ground at all.

I just think we should hear them out, you know? If we value things like free speech and freedom so much, why are people so quick to shout down anyone speaking for the Daleks?

Meant to reply to you here>>62065

Exactly. Exactly. If a Time Lord kills a Dalek, it's effectively a murderer killing someone, right? Isn't that what we judge the Daleks for doing? I feel like we're being kind of hasty here.

kk matey

i used to hate daleks but when davros appeared on the joe rogan experience i saw how cool he was and it changed my mind

I felt really bad for Davros losing that debate with the Doctor. It was that fucking cider. He couldn't sleep for an entire month :'(

The left ate itself at Canary Wharf

Yeah I'm just reading them now

Davros twitter account when?

The thing that kills me with putting Davros on the top 10 villain lists and shit is that he's literally done nothing wrong in the actual Doctor Who episodes he's in. It's all inference and offscreen stuff so I don't feel like it's really fair to characterise him as an immediate villain in the same way someone like Jackie Tyler was in S1.

Agree. Folks, let's talk.

As some of you may know, this board celebrated 10 years a couple of weeks ago.

Now, back when I created the board I had visions of Ten and Rose's family on Christmas Day, celebrating a potential feast. Frustratingly, the state of the sub has turned from celebrating (Doctor Who) to bashing, ridiculing, harassment, and downright negativity.

I didn't create the board to be like this and I'm sick and tired of it.

What I'm considering doing is to start removing/banning negative posts criticizing this and that. This is not a place to come and state your dislike for whatever you dislike about Doctor Who. I held off simply because it would be censorship and I am the last person to want to censor anything.

I think starting with the negative posts would cut down on a lot of the crap and I'd leave the comments alone. If I see the comments sustaining negativity. then I'll look at addressing them.

I don't like discussing this topic, but I refuse to let the hard work and dedication of the past ten years dissolve into toxicity. I haven't implemented anything yet, but something is coming. If someone has an idea on how to better deal with the issue, I'm all ears. I was hoping it would fade away as it seemed to do in the past, but it seems to be growing stronger.

I'm frustrated, the mods are frustrated, and a lot of you are frustrated.

*I'm heading to work. I'll be back later today to continue the conversation. The other mods will be around as their time allows.

kek, sauce?

low-hanging fruit; it was the mod of r/StarWars, actually wanting to ban negativity.

The original was deleted so all I have is the altered-to-fit-dr-who one

Oh fug I know what you're talking about now, the banning people disliking TLJ thing. kek.

Does making a bomb to destroy reality count?

I feel like even just the way you're phrasing that is very much in the Doctor's term and so not really a good faith argument. Who are you to judge him?

DAVROS: Across the entire universe. Never stopping, never faltering, never fading. People and planets and stars will become dust, and the dust will become atoms, and the atoms will become nothing. And the wavelength will continue, breaking through the Rift at the heart of the Medusa Cascade into every dimension, every parallel, every single corner of creation. This is my ultimate victory, Doctor! The destruction of reality itself!

And? Have you even tried considering why he's saying that?

There is no justifiable reason to destroy innocent universes to remove your enemies

Thought-terminating cliche.

I agree that "Pro-suicide" is an eminently interesting way of looking at HS but I'm talking about Moff himself and the way I see it if that's what he had in his head, he would've put emphasis on it rather than the "refusal to give in" etc, and by extension refusal to actually /die/. You may see it differently though.

Heaven Sent was a reference to the Japanese soldiers of World War 2. Dying to further the cause of the emperor. Pretty deep

Nil 'This account mocks fascists' So

Deep down inside Moff there's a very woke, fearless writer, but a cloyingly childish writer is wrapped very tight around him. I don't think there's any real chance Moff intentionally tried to shill for suicide in S9 (S10 honestly I'm less sure about though) but a lot of Moff's best stuff I think comes from him pseudointentionally skirting his own rules and unconsciously breaking what he thinks are vital tenets of the show and behaviour in general. Contrast to RTD who is extremely self-aware.

I realy realy loved it!

I read somewhere in the youtube comments that original plan for S2 was Victoria dying in Tooth and Claw so the future changes to dystopian society with cybermen, is there any indication that it's at least remotely true?

Because it sounds cool as fuck

the idea of casting an actor as the doctor in a medium (prose) where you're not bound by using actors and can dream up any incarnation you're able to isn't something I would ever have thought of.

Not shitting on the idea—it makes more sense as I think about it—it's just kind of left-field.

I like the choice of pose for that Cyberman, a little bit Jojo.

For me personally it was more appearance based instead of behavioural. If you give something a face it's much more malleable than something that remains anonymous and undefined.

question to everyone—who's the best Simpson out of the main 4? rank them

Marge > Homer > Lisa > Bart

Marge > Homer > Bart > Lisa

holy shit /who/ has good taste, I was worried I'd sound contrarian

I'm certain on Marge > Homer for the best two, Lisa and Bart are kind of equal but I think I slightly prefer Lisa

Homer > Marge > Bart > Lisa

I just find Marge the most funny even though she gets less gags than Homer. They're all great though.

If we could include Abe I'd rank him pretty high.

Sneed > Marge > Homer > Abe > Lisa > Chuck > Bart

marge gets better gags than homer or bart because she isn't stupid so the writers actually have to try

Consensus from the poll is 2 ~100min streams a week. Most popular days are Fridays and Saturdays (timezones obscure stuff a bit though), followed by Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

You might also need to think about times, unless you're gonna play it by ear

I would love people to say what times work best for them. I'm leaning towards doing one stream Tuesday~Wednesday and the other Friday~Saturday to divide it up a bit.

It's times like this I wish Nilso was still alive. Sigh.

Part 2: Thoughts on writing a Foreman story

Let’s start with the elephant in the room: much as I played it up that way, I don't consider this a parody of foreman. There are elements of this that I parody from their bible and scripts, but then I also take their concepts and ideas as seriously as I would Moff or Loz in a regular doctor story over the course of this story, which is the highest compliment I can pay. And much as Miles is perhaps a bit loud for their own good(which is admirable in a showrunner, but wait until you have something real to show first!!!) I don't think they deserve ridicule for putting themselves out there. Instead the elements I parodied were the kinds of small things I criticize in my own stories(the narrator in three-ish doctors gets a well placed jab at my expense as I recognize the limitations of the story im trying to tell) and are again things that if they ever read and said “look, you took this too far and it feels like a personal attack” i wouldn’t standby. It just wasn’t my intention to do that.

With that out of the way, there’s a fantastic legend about Bob Holmes, who hadn’t written for doctor who in like, 4 or 5 years; and then JNT calls him up and asks him to write a story while giving him a blank cheque. And bob's been watching doctor who and yelling at the tv much like we are now and he sees the opportunity and uses it as an opportunity to put the fifth doctor through all the hell he would have put him through if he had written 5 all along. The result was the caves of androzani.

Before we get into the meat of the foreman stuff, a quick side note: the light hearted physical confrontation at the beginning was originally written for 2 for a story for ST2. It had a different context and 2 had a different reason for his antagonism, but I think a tiny bit of 2 shines through on the scene still.

And so as I'm reading the leaked foreman stuff I sit here going “this actually… is relatively tame” i mean, sure drug parties are dark; whatever. But i never feel like Nirvi or The Doctor have any real danger in their scripts. That’s an important thing for what’s supposed to be a “progressive” take with a more dramatic and serious feeling. And so that story of bob holmes comes into my head, and then a single concept: VNA Dark.

Quick note:Ive read less than handful of the vnas. A solid few books all the way through, a few passages here or there, and an audio adaptation. I’m not an expert on them by any stretch.

But speaking of novel adaptations I love moff's take on a christmas carol; it led to me deciding to do one as the majority of this story as an adaptation of The Return of the Soldier by Rebecca West. That story is about a WW1 soldier who has been sent home on sick leave after a heavy blow to the head, which has given him amnesia and regressed him back to a time before he knew his wife. The story was one of the first literary explorations of real PTSD and how it affected Edwardian England with the innocence of that society, meanwhile telling a power struggle between the soldier’s previous life and the life he was supposed to lead.

The end of the novel is a downer ending- confronted by proof that he cannot ignore(the baby clothes of his dead infant son), the soldier’s memory snaps back and suddenly he’s a world war 1 soldier again, being sent out to die on the battlefield as his wife celebrates despite causing him intense trauma(because her place in high society is secured again). Edwardian Culture had not seen a comparable war in generations(unlike the Americans, who knew what to expect from modern weaponry due to the civil war); so back home they kept a proud stance and a hedonistic lifestyle as the innocence was robbed of a generation of men.

They've sold the series to worldwide buyers under the impression it will start in October. They're not gonna change it to August.

And so when the time came I absolutely fell in love with the lore Miles had of The War In Heaven, and used it with a broad stroke to paint Gallifrey into a WW1 British society. My interpretation of The Doctor’s confrontation with his past self is unfortunately VERY overshadowed by Twice Upon a Time, which wasn’t even known about yet when I started drafting it! Fuck.

I will admit I took one concept away: I stole the controversial plot point away from Terrence Dicks The Eight Doctors of 3 pointing a gun at 8. I hate it in it’s original context, but the idea of going(and I say this in the utmost Meme-y way) VNA dark requires a sufficiently meme-y idea.

I’ll toot my own horn: the resolution to the flashback and how we bring ourselves out of it is beautiful; I really like the idea of how that happened as the last words splits outwards as a message to two different characters. I really shouldn’t ever do that again because of how special that moment ends up being.

I love our actual villain. I love having a fakeout villain too to our confrontation. Our actual villain’s figured out The Doctor’s 5 year recycling memory and used it to make him trapped in a cycle of trauma! He’s basically in a prison of his own to match The Master’s. Nirvi’s based on a bit of a mixture of Lucie Miller and college campus activists. I have friends in that demographic who are the nicest people imaginable but very headstrong and put themselves out there without knowing all the facts, which is Nirvi’s role in this scenario. Otherwise no one could drive the plot here.

The Doctor’s mother is purely a wheelchair bound Maggie Smith. You can tell by the sheer strength I wanted to give the character through her deliberate choice and mannerisms. Everything’s calculated with her, every action and word precise with the exception of when she falters and you can feel the tragedy of her inability to contain herself. Her direction is actually based off my own sweet Ma, misguided and kind; convinced one day I’ll be back to take over leading the family from her. Will I? I dunno. I dunno if it’s the life I want yet; but she keeps the home afloat until that day that she’s convinced I will. She’s a bit bullheaded like that in her own way.

One more thing: when Nirvi asks Ohiya and The Doctor’s Mother about his reason for leaving, their seemingly separate answers are actually the same. On a surface level, Ohiya blaming a lingering effect of the war is true in the sense of The Shroud taking it’s revenge set out The Doctor on his path. On the other hand, The Doctor’s Mother is right: if The Doctor had never been conscripted to fight in the war by Gallifreyan politics he wouldn’t have had to face it’s consequences either. Wouldn’t have had a wife either but…

In all I think I’m very proud of how this story turned out. I don’t think it’s a put down of the Foreman concept; but merely an affirmation that there’s a grand lore that it challenged my imagination conceptually. If Miles ever does read this story I’m don’t think I would apologize for it as a work, because I feel I made an earnest take that I’m proud of. But I might apologize for a small joke here or there at her expense(seriously, did ANYONE care to know where Ohiya studied to be a nurse? I didn’t, and I made her up!)

And thats all I have to say about my double feature for today. Thanks to neo and immigrant, and I look forward to you all reading this last one and comparing it to the new Foreman Audio adaptation! I'm a huge fan of what they did with that script.

Haven't read any of your fanfiction and not going to start, tbf.

That's fine. I don't expect many people will.

Now I feel mean.

Maybe I will read some (I wont).

Reminder that the Doctor Who trailer will be on ITV and NOT BBC. Don't make the mistake of watching the BBC1 World Cup broadcast.

Sorry, chap. Didn't mean to make you feel bad. Hope you have a good day.

>Chibnall is an ITV sellout

of course he is

Nah. It's too friendly now. I'm going to be rude to you again. Boundary issues.

Not to mention his last words and the exact problem with the TARDIS: Timing malfunction.

The TARDIS has bad timing in the movie.

Reminder that ITV are superior to the PaedoBC.

based chibnall not supporting the brussels broadcasting corporation

On the one hand, I do kind of like it. On the other hand, kind of seems like the yanks just wanted to get the old fart out of the way to bring in the new hotness.

Yeah, it seems coincidental that it actually worked for 7's character.

This does add to it in a meta way.

@neo just rejoined and theres blank space

Not sure if I would have liked to have seen the McGann TV series or not. The movie was mediocre, played very loose with established continuity, and some of the ideas they had planned for the series seem really wacky (Borusa is the Doctor's father. and his spirit lives in the Tardis console, or something), but McGann's a great Doctor, and I just would have liked to have seen what real 90's Doctor Who would have been like. In my head it's like an amalgamation of all of the great sci-fi that was going on at the time: X-Files, the Star Trek shows, Red Dwarf. The 90's was a golden era for TV sci-fi.

That's just because your chat box is huge.

>It introduced the Doctor and the Master, half-brothers and sons of the lost Time Lord explorer Ulysses, Borusa's son. When the evil Master becomes President of the Time Lords upon Borusa's death, the Doctor flees Gallifrey in a rickety old TARDIS to find Ulysses. Borusa's spirit becomes enmeshed in the TARDIS, enabling Borusa to advise his grandson. The Doctor takes the TARDIS to "the Blue Planet" to search for Ulysses, the native world of the Doctor's mother.

Yeah, not so sure about any of that.

my ni[REDACTED]er the War Doctor

What did he mean by this?

Also, I want to say once and for all that the War Doctor is a stupid name. He should officially be called the Warrior.

But he's an incarnation of the Time Lord most frequently known as the Doctor, and by the end of his one episode he has a redemption arc where the others acknowledge he was the Doctor all along.

A certain renowned stream user insists that he was

Was he officiay called "War Doctor"?

It was the definition of mediocre.

it was a masterpiece

And I say that as a fan!

He was seconds from death at that point though.

Ummm, exuse me BBC. WHat is this FOOTBALL!!!!?? I am here to watch DOctor Who not stupid FOOTBALL BBC you dummies. football is for looserssss.

The most exciting scene is a motorcycle chase.

how many hours til half time? Im guessing 2 hours, but Im not sure about timezones

>not the eye of harmony scene

Are we sure that it's at halftime?

what about THESE SHOES?

>not the asian child scene

That's the film's strength. McGann's good, has good little character moments, but what even was the plot? The Master wants to steal clock, so he can do something?

They're my sandals

He wanted to steal the Doctor's regenerations

What was the part with the clock?

Imagine if Chang Lee was played by Anri Okita instead of Yee Jee Tso

He didn't want to steal any clocks, he wanted to steal the Doctor's body and his TARDIS. The clock was just there as a convenient plot excuse for how the Doctor and Grace would stop him, because clearly beryllium clocks uhhhhhhh….. yeah.

The Doctor had to steal something from the clock to fix the TARDIS.

The Doctor needed to steal the atomic clock so he could fix the timing circuits in the TARDIS

So, what's canon now? Does every Tardis have an Eye of Harmony, or just a link to the one on Gallifrey?

Still don't get what the clock was about.

It doesn't matter what's canon, it'll be contradicted in the future anyway.

The movie suggested that the Eye of Harmony (like, the actual thing) was in the TARDIS, and I think something in Smith's era played into that, but I just assume that it was a thing by which the Doctor's TARDIS was connected to the real Eye… and that the real Eye transcended any sort of destruction that occurred during the Time War. But it's all a matter of opinion, really.

How did the Doctor's TARDIS function when Gallifrey was destroyed with the eye of harmony? I mean I know it was retconned, but was there an explanation in the RTD era?

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play.

But, why? Like his oven's internal clock was wrong, and he needed a really accurate wrist watch to set it by?

I think he was essentially replacing a broken part. He didn't literally steal a clock, but a timing circuit.

>there's no power!

>the eye being open so long must've drained the tardith!

goat moment

What's a timing circuit? Why is there Timelord technology on Earth?

There wasn't timelord tech on Earth. He took a device which accurately measured time (like the quartz in a wristwatch) and put it in the TARDIS. The one he took was the most advanced and accurate on Earth, and he needed it to fix the Timing Malfunction that the 7th Doctor was talking about.

Did you pay attention while watching the film at all?

Perhaps the Eye isn't just an engineered black hole. Perhaps Omega collapsed the star in a way which fractured space-time, creating a rift that stretches to all corners of the universe, both fore and backwards in time, providing an energy source which Gallifreyan tech is able to tap into at any point.

why didn't the doctor just make an ironman suit with a box of scraps

He can't just reset the internal clock like a computer? The idea that what he needs to fix his amazing alien timeship is some clock from earth is really bizarre to me.

Heaven Sent

i don't remember ever watching nightmare in silver, because i have no memory of it beyond clips i've seen on youtube

No, the doctor can’t go into his past on Gallifrey because of the laws of time but the TARDIS doesn’t follow time lord laws so it can siphon off more energy. Another explanation from Faction Paradox is that Compassion gets her energy from the Earth because she was born there so maybe the Doctors TARDIS has adapted to get energy from the Earth too

No. Only VNAs and ZX Spectrum games are canon.

Exposing the absolute moral vacuity of political figures who possess power, so we can all laugh at them, will never not be absolutely vital.

It's to create an illusion of balance. They might make fun of his gay hats, but they'll never tackle anything important like his support of the IRA.

The BBC censored Frankie Boyle saying "Israel is an apartheid state". They didnt censor his other stuff which is arguably a lot more offensive, but they censor the political stuff. Imo they should absolutely take the piss out of Corbyn's ira stuff. Nothing should be free from satire

Daleks were retconned into Nazis. Terry Nation didn't decide that until 20 years later.

Heavy propaganda is embarrassing no matter who's side it supports. No one cares about women. There have always been women. No one cares about minorities as long as they aren't used as propagandistic tools (which is insulting to them too). Have an actual African companion. That would be cool, and a real change in the staus quo for once.

/who/: "What the fuck, why did the BBC spoil the Simm reveal at the end of the trailer?! That'd have been great to find out for ourselves!"

Also /who/: "SPOILERS PL0X!!!!!!"

I guess I'm just getting overly emotional over what DW has become. I grew up with all these cartoons and shows that were actually trying to be FUN and ignored current politics while still having some morals and ethics and now I turn on something like cartoon network and see stuff like Knuckles from Sonic Boom making fun of 3rd wave feminism and Gumball talking about SJWs and trump or I read some comics and I so much diversity shit that it hurts and I don't even want to talk about some of the stuff in series 10. What happened to having fun? What happened to fiction being an ESCAPE from reality?

More words break the i before e rule than obey it

All fiction is political, read Sandifer you fascist

(Honestly, I agree with you, I think overexposure to constant politics makes us sadder, most political "activists" on social media tend to be miserable in my experience. I think keepîng everything separate leads to a more balanced life).

He was quoting a pasta and you've just made yourself look like an idiot.

Sincere, non-verged opinion:

This teaser has tipped me further away from "he might be doing something interesting with the characters what with Yas being a police officer," and further towards "it's just going to be an attempt at rekindling the RTD era by appealing to familiarity". I'm still worried that Chibnall's vision for the show will just be utterly generic drivel and wasted potential galore.

I think it was specified somewhere that it was going to exclusively be focusing on Jodie/Mandip/Bradley/Tosin instead of a wider plot. Not sure where I read that though.

I wasn't quoting anything, mate. I wrote that myself

The Doctor is showing her new companions clips of her old adventures. Bradley has seen this one before, but the others are talking amongst themselves.

"Be quiet you two, The Chase is on!"

>working only in absolutes

My man, I'm not asking for the primo kino revelation of the series, but you gotta give me a little something.

I still would have been more pleased with the three of them interacting and say, them reacting to Jodie. It's just "Oh, they're eating. Adventurers in time and space get peckish too." Why aren't they together? Why isn't jodie with them? Why is she strolling around the diner? Is that the waitress?

well, time to escape, or time to take the piss out of it with everyone else

BBC probably temporarily took her down to search her twitter for contraband

Oh no. RIP me. I hope Chibs doesn't have me erased too.

At most they'll have you take the video down. Someone or multiple people probably reported her or Chibbs noticed her

What does the pizza represent?

Why don't they keep it consistent and start at fucking 7 like they do with Doctor Who? They made me miss the repeat of Dinosaurs this way too

People that stalk the sets to get as much information as possible being upset that they already knew everything in a trailer

Don't go there.

A full series of Torchwood is like 9+ hours, it's way longer than their Who blocks.

You aren't my mum.

Oh shit a whole series in one day? That's a bit much desu

Would you like me to be?

It's perfectly reasonable to ask a new trip who they are when we haven't had any new ones in months

Redpill on Neo and Ben's fractured history

Can you breastfeed me?

Whew. I'd hate to disappoint my 150 followers with lack of soda advert retweets.

Oh but you've called him Daddy. I have proofs.

Cloister you janoid

Ben smothered his brother to death in his crib and his parents thought it was crib death. Neo is upset because he does that

We can work something out.

Some stones are better left unturned.

I'd like to know too

They have a prolific posting history.

I love your twitter cloi

>Dude Cardiff lmao

It's what Neo had with Faceless but real

dude relatable working class folks who eat chips xD

Doctor who episodes that verge you? Caves always gets me during the regeneration and the Massacre when Steven thinks the Doctor has been beaten to death in the streets

>The first scene of Torchwood is dude atheism lmao

>Everybody swears because they can

This show is for ADULTS, don't you forget it!!

That was a random anon who was probably lying, wasn't it? I thought Ben's relationship with his brother was decidedly different…

Meant for >>62535

Aw, ty bb <3

The reason Children of Earth is so good is because that rapist Owen isn’t in it

gigs crying

Stuns me that RTD included that scene in the first ep honestly. In my youth I made a fanedit removing that one scene for when I burnt DVDs of the show for friends lol.

Biscum out

Is manufacturing consent really rape? Love potions in Harry Potter? Sex sprays in Torchwood?

Would you like to make me so as well?

I've totally cried watching Doctor Who. Regenerations get me most consistently.

Yes. Arguably worse depending on the level or extent of subterfuge.

I would agree. I thought about this before in the context of Harry Potter specifically, it's really worrisome that they play it off like some kind of joke.

Question is, do people regret it afterwards?

Hell Bent had me fucking sobbing

>JK being insidiously problematic

Colour me shocked

Hell Bent made me cry because it was so shit

im gay xd

If they're not soulless animals, presumably. I still lose sleep for kissing girls letting them think I was a normal person.

Yea, that was a rough one. In the cloisters.

? I really wouldn't know where to start. What do you think of JK?

good ol jk

I don't like her very much, but I'd like to know more.

Jessica Jones handles this with the assertion that it is rape. Personally, I agree that using drugs or pheromones to coerce someone into consenting is rape

Wrote some decent kids books now won't stop trying to score points on Twitter, remaining relevant by slowly being like "btw Crabbe fucked Goyle every night"

I'd be keen too >>62569 It's been awhile since I've read the books or seen the movies. Are these criticisms through today's lens or were they problematic at the time?

when the morning comes

sex gas episode of torchwood about to occur in the twitch

The only problematic thing I can think about in HP is love potions, and potentially Harry and Ginny's relationship

Like my future, she's a total joke.

>potentially Harry and Ginny's relationship

now you're gonna have to elaborate on that too

I seriously don't know where to begin because she's a real piece of work and it's been since the books but her incessant tweeting has amplified people's recognition of issues with her. For an example breakdown of some of her issues more in the text of her books, I love Jack Graham's takedown here

The Girl Who Waited was the last episode to push me over the verge.

Ginny fucking adores Harry in CoS because he's an older boy who is famous, them dating later is a strange dynamic. I don't really think much of it, but if I was forced to come up with something "problematic" for the series, you could potentially have some abuse of power stuff there

Tfw no memes in the TW twitch trailer

Eve Myles is thiccccccccccc

When will death grips sample Claudia Boleyn?

Is it worth getting turned into a pile of dust to fuck her like that?

no new footage in the bbc drama trailer, just a bit from the new teaser and a bit from the jodie announcement for some reason

jenna coleman's in something though

>incessant tweeting

Well there's your problem. I'll take a gander at the article in a moment. It could be me just being an old man, but taking umbrage with works written in the past because of it's tone, tropes and verbiage is so frustrating to me. Like Tom Sawyer and Nigger Jim, for instance. The seemingly crazy juxtaposition and context of Tom and Jim being "friends" like dynamic not to mention Tom's an actual child calling an adult this and seemingly being both ok with Jim's moniker is an important illustration of the time. Harry Potter is now dated, and so is some of it's ideas, just like it's author surely.

>taking umbrage with works written in the past because of it's tone, tropes and verbiage is so frustrating to me

Never thought I'd see such a genuinely woke opinion on /Who/

It is utterly stupid to criticise old media for being "problematic" through any lens other than the culture of the time

Hopefully she has some scenes worth watching The Cry for.

It's strange to place a current moral compass on something made 80-100 years ago

Oh it's not really critically reevaluating the books with a more moral mindset as much as just people pointing out louder now that there's some bizarre stuff in there people pass over because they're so popular. People have always noticed that stuff in the books but as they got more popular and JK got more controversial people naturally listened more to those complaints, of which the books being unsocially woke is only one part (more interesting to me is the case that they're insidiously anti-literacy).

i'll happily wait that two months if it means he gets btfo again

>Made of gas

>Stopped by pane of plastic with holes in

>It is utterly stupid to criticise old media for being "problematic"

Sure, if you think criticism only extends as far as making moral pronouncements about the author.

But you can absolutely criticise people continuing to swallow old media and all of its implicit attitudes without pointing them out and recognising the problems with their morality. Because the media may have been created in the culture of the time, but we have no choice but to consume it in the culture of today.

The racism in Talons doesn't magically become a good thing just because it's old

>The racism in Talons doesn't magically become a good thing just because it's old

No one thinks this

>But you can absolutely criticise people continuing to swallow old media and all of its implicit attitudes without pointing them out and recognising the problems with their morality.

Do you really think people will suddenly hate women because they watched Turnabout Intruder? A modern man watching Star Trek goes into it with his morals, and comes out of it with his morals intact. You don't become racist from watching 60s TV. You already have your opinions on this stuff going into it. You -know- standards are different now

>first ep of crotchwood is rapey as fuck

>second ep they're trying to stop an alien that rapes people

What did they mean by this?

It's pretty strange doing it with anything before the proliferation of the smart phone. It was a totally different world then.

>bizarre stuff in there

It's a book about wizards with a culture barely adjacent to our own, back then. I genuinely can't remember anything insidious or harmful in them that wasn't outside the norms of the time. The only thing controversial about it was it was about witchcraft and bible thumpers don't generally like that sort of thing. If it gets a kid to read through 7 admittedly mediocre books, it's not anti-literacy. Harry Potter has been a gateway for literature if anything.

The banks in Harry Potter are run by goblins, not sure how you could be more problematic than that

File: 6e4ea32ee13dc0e⋯.png (512.41 KB, 724x408, 181:102, ptEYzxY[1].png)

Is this Morgus, the evil conglomerate dude from Caves of Androzani?

Is that too on the nose? Maybe it's what one sees in or projects onto those goblins is the real problem. Carpenter for instance takes flack for They Live for the same things while maintaining that it's absolutely not the case. Some say the Ferengi are a jewish archetype in star trek(which has always been on the more progressive edge of nerd shit purportedly), which may or may not have merit. I've heard vulcans as well but I can't draw any parallels. What about the elves in Bright? Committing to archetypes and tropes aren't always racist. Sometimes they're just hacky.

File: fc2061ba3eba019⋯.png (50.34 KB, 1102x190, 29:5, Screen Shot 2018-07-15 at ….png)

Reminder that there won't be a trailer at SDCC and the fandom is once again getting hyped up over nothing and will complain constantly.

Why? Because Nimoy was Jewish? The Vulcan salute is a Jewish symbol he saw as a child, but apart from that where is the Jewness in Vulcans?

It's like people thinking Watto or Jar Jar are racist. Now, the Trade Federation being Space Chinese, on the other hand….

So uhh… the Rose book was really good

>there won't be a trailer at SDCC

The twitter account did say "come back for more on Thursday" so we're getting something.

fucking clown

the whole comment section of the teaser is nothing but whining and complaining

I've heard cold and emotionless but like I said I can't draw any parallels even with my latent cletus DNA. If anything I'd say the vulcans are allegorical asians. I don't understand your star wars references and I don't want to.

File: f198d4b5091ccf0⋯.webm (8.81 MB, 600x720, 5:6, Amy.webm)

No, let it go, we've moved on!

The point of stereotypes is that they're things we don't consciously think about, it's a sort of knee-jerk response in the form of traits we associate with certain demographics or cultures. Nobody is unbiased, no matter how much they may try and tell you otherwise. Everyone falls victim to this way of thinking, because it's ingrained in us by our surrounding culture. The thing that sets people apart as being empathetic and socially conscious, is that they can recognise the stereotypes, and if they feel they're getting too close to perpetuating them, they can step back and amend the situation.

Also, when it comes to fantasy races, a lot of them (see: orcs, goblins, etc.) were initially formed with racist undertones, because they were created at a time when those sorts of attitudes were the norm. But because the fantasy races have become sorta divorced from the original subtext, people forget themselves and continue to write them in a problematic way, because they don't consciously acknowledge the connection between the fantasy races and real-life demographics. It's not to say those fantasy races are always racist, no matter what way you spin it, but rather that sometimes it takes an extra little bit of thinking to re-imagine them in a context and form that doesn't continue an age-old racist trend.

I'd love to dig inside her til my fingers bleed :)

Surely you've seen the prequels, and how Watto is a Space Jew complete with little hat, rubbing his hands together and being all about money? And people think the Gungans are Africans because uh… they talk funny.

The trade federation viceroys really do look oriental (pardon the term) and speak with chinese accents, though. But they're the real space Jews, if you feel the need to make a comparison like that

Should probably stay away from here

Making a race of Space Jews based on cultural stereotypes of Jewish people is not making fun of Jews, it isn't antisemitic, not at all. It's just playing with concepts. I think it's problematic to think so, honestly.

Is Chang's line in Talons, "I understand we all look the same", racist? If you do, then we are at an impasse.

:') based

To add to this, making fun of stereotypes isn't making fun of the people the stereotypes are based on. And getting offended on a group's behalf is pretty tedious

Chang's line is done through sarcasm. He's probably been asked to do that before, so he's throwing a bit of lip their way.

Exactly, my point is it is making fun of the stereotype. But I wonder if the person I'm replying to thinks it's racist because it employs a stereotype

>it's just satire bro!

I think we're agreeing. Stereotypes and the perpetuation thereof is hacky and I get why it could be viewed as harmful, but I give a pass only because it's a snapshot and documents that way of thinking still being pervasive in it's era. I also give a total pass when it comes to comedy or attempts thereof to a point so long as it's not blatantly malicious and highlights some of the absurdity.

>Surely you've seen the prequels

Could we get the new thread a bit early? I want to do a /who/nger games but I think it'd be best to do it on a fresh thread.

Rhymes with "hat".

People got really tetchy last time anyone wanted to do a /who/nger games and said that it took up all of the thread for no reason. Should it be done in a different thread or should we just do it here?

I personally reside on the "hat" side of things. "Twahht" or "Twott" sounds quite weird to me, but it's probably just a cultural thing.

Yanks need to learn to speak proper.

I don't make them, I just sticky them. Whenever the thread regenerates is fine by me.

It might be as much as an accent thing for me. Ors come out like Are-s too. For becomes far, Holly becomes Hally. Regionally we have a slower cadence and draw out our vowels. I hear twat like hat when reading but vocalize something completely different.

The people against it are probably just a vocal minority. It's a tradition, and with the 750 post limit and the fact you can include five images within one post, it'll take up much less space than it used to. Plus at this point we're only doing one every two months or so. It's not like the thread hasn't been cluttered with comicsposting lately anyway.

What's our individual submission cap on entries going to be?

Depends on the time of day and how busy the thread is. Right now we could probably have 5 or 6 per person since the thread's pretty quiet and I was hoping to liven it up a little.

Tbf Someone with a north eastern upbringing or accent like Gally probably pronounces it like hat. If he were ever to say such a thing.
