 No.62079

>>62049

Agree. Folks, let's talk.

As some of you may know, this board celebrated 10 years a couple of weeks ago.

Now, back when I created the board I had visions of Ten and Rose's family on Christmas Day, celebrating a potential feast. Frustratingly, the state of the sub has turned from celebrating (Doctor Who) to bashing, ridiculing, harassment, and downright negativity.

I didn't create the board to be like this and I'm sick and tired of it.

What I'm considering doing is to start removing/banning negative posts criticizing this and that. This is not a place to come and state your dislike for whatever you dislike about Doctor Who. I held off simply because it would be censorship and I am the last person to want to censor anything.

I think starting with the negative posts would cut down on a lot of the crap and I'd leave the comments alone. If I see the comments sustaining negativity. then I'll look at addressing them.

I don't like discussing this topic, but I refuse to let the hard work and dedication of the past ten years dissolve into toxicity. I haven't implemented anything yet, but something is coming. If someone has an idea on how to better deal with the issue, I'm all ears. I was hoping it would fade away as it seemed to do in the past, but it seems to be growing stronger.

I'm frustrated, the mods are frustrated, and a lot of you are frustrated.

*I'm heading to work. I'll be back later today to continue the conversation. The other mods will be around as their time allows.

Deep down inside Moff there's a very woke, fearless writer, but a cloyingly childish writer is wrapped very tight around him. I don't think there's any real chance Moff intentionally tried to shill for suicide in S9 (S10 honestly I'm less sure about though) but a lot of Moff's best stuff I think comes from him pseudointentionally skirting his own rules and unconsciously breaking what he thinks are vital tenets of the show and behaviour in general. Part 2: Thoughts on writing a Foreman story

Let’s start with the elephant in the room: much as I played it up that way, I don't consider this a parody of foreman. There are elements of this that I parody from their bible and scripts, but then I also take their concepts and ideas as seriously as I would Moff or Loz in a regular doctor story over the course of this story, which is the highest compliment I can pay. And much as Miles is perhaps a bit loud for their own good(which is admirable in a showrunner, but wait until you have something real to show first!!!) I don't think they deserve ridicule for putting themselves out there. Instead the elements I parodied were the kinds of small things I criticize in my own stories(the narrator in three-ish doctors gets a well placed jab at my expense as I recognize the limitations of the story im trying to tell) and are again things that if they ever read and said “look, you took this too far and it feels like a personal attack” i wouldn’t standby. It just wasn’t my intention to do that.

With that out of the way, there’s a fantastic legend about Bob Holmes, who hadn’t written for doctor who in like, 4 or 5 years; and then JNT calls him up and asks him to write a story while giving him a blank cheque. And bob's been watching doctor who and yelling at the tv much like we are now and he sees the opportunity and uses it as an opportunity to put the fifth doctor through all the hell he would have put him through if he had written 5 all along. The result was the caves of androzani.

Before we get into the meat of the foreman stuff, a quick side note: the light hearted physical confrontation at the beginning was originally written for 2 for a story for ST2. It had a different context and 2 had a different reason for his antagonism, but I think a tiny bit of 2 shines through on the scene still.

And so as I'm reading the leaked foreman stuff I sit here going “this actually… is relatively tame” i mean, sure drug parties are dark; whatever. But i never feel like Nirvi or The Doctor have any real danger in their scripts. That’s an important thing for what’s supposed to be a “progressive” take with a more dramatic and serious feeling. And so that story of bob holmes comes into my head, and then a single concept: VNA Dark.

Quick note:Ive read less than handful of the vnas. A solid few books all the way through, a few passages here or there, and an audio adaptation. I’m not an expert on them by any stretch.

But speaking of novel adaptations I love moff's take on a christmas carol; it led to me deciding to do one as the majority of this story as an adaptation of The Return of the Soldier by Rebecca West. That story is about a WW1 soldier who has been sent home on sick leave after a heavy blow to the head, which has given him amnesia and regressed him back to a time before he knew his wife. The story was one of the first literary explorations of real PTSD and how it affected Edwardian England with the innocence of that society, meanwhile telling a power struggle between the soldier’s previous life and the life he was supposed to lead.

The end of the novel is a downer ending- confronted by proof that he cannot ignore(the baby clothes of his dead infant son), the soldier’s memory snaps back and suddenly he’s a world war 1 soldier again, being sent out to die on the battlefield as his wife celebrates despite causing him intense trauma(because her place in high society is secured again). Edwardian Culture had not seen a comparable war in generations(unlike the Americans, who knew what to expect from modern weaponry due to the civil war); so back home they kept a proud stance and a hedonistic lifestyle as the innocence was robbed of a generation of men.

And so when the time came I absolutely fell in love with the lore Miles had of The War In Heaven, and used it with a broad stroke to paint Gallifrey into a WW1 British society. My interpretation of The Doctor’s confrontation with his past self is unfortunately VERY overshadowed by Twice Upon a Time, which wasn’t even known about yet when I started drafting it! Fuck.

I will admit I took one concept away: I stole the controversial plot point away from Terrence Dicks The Eight Doctors of 3 pointing a gun at 8. I hate it in it’s original context, but the idea of going(and I say this in the utmost Meme-y way) VNA dark requires a sufficiently meme-y idea.

I’ll toot my own horn: the resolution to the flashback and how we bring ourselves out of it is beautiful; I really like the idea of how that happened as the last words splits outwards as a message to two different characters. I really shouldn’t ever do that again because of how special that moment ends up being.

I love our actual villain. I love having a fakeout villain too to our confrontation. Our actual villain’s figured out The Doctor’s 5 year recycling memory and used it to make him trapped in a cycle of trauma! He’s basically in a prison of his own to match The Master’s. Nirvi’s based on a bit of a mixture of Lucie Miller and college campus activists. I have friends in that demographic who are the nicest people imaginable but very headstrong and put themselves out there without knowing all the facts, which is Nirvi’s role in this scenario. Otherwise no one could drive the plot here.

The Doctor’s mother is purely a wheelchair bound Maggie Smith. You can tell by the sheer strength I wanted to give the character through her deliberate choice and mannerisms. Everything’s calculated with her, every action and word precise with the exception of when she falters and you can feel the tragedy of her inability to contain herself. Her direction is actually based off my own sweet Ma, misguided and kind; convinced one day I’ll be back to take over leading the family from her. Will I? I dunno. I dunno if it’s the life I want yet; but she keeps the home afloat until that day that she’s convinced I will. She’s a bit bullheaded like that in her own way.

One more thing: when Nirvi asks Ohiya and The Doctor’s Mother about his reason for leaving, their seemingly separate answers are actually the same. On a surface level, Ohiya blaming a lingering effect of the war is true in the sense of The Shroud taking it’s revenge set out The Doctor on his path. On the other hand, The Doctor’s Mother is right: if The Doctor had never been conscripted to fight in the war by Gallifreyan politics he wouldn’t have had to face it’s consequences either. Wouldn’t have had a wife either but…

In all I think I’m very proud of how this story turned out. I don’t think it’s a put down of the Foreman concept; but merely an affirmation that there’s a grand lore that it challenged my imagination conceptually. If Miles ever does read this story I’m don’t think I would apologize for it as a work, because I feel I made an earnest take that I’m proud of. But I might apologize for a small joke here or there at her expense(seriously, did ANYONE care to know where Ohiya studied to be a nurse? I didn’t, and I made her up!)

And thats all I have to say about my double feature for today. Thanks to neo and immigrant, and I look forward to you all reading this last one and comparing it to the new Foreman Audio adaptation! I'm a huge fan of what they did with that script.

Not sure if I would have liked to have seen the McGann TV series or not. The movie was mediocre, played very loose with established continuity, and some of the ideas they had planned for the series seem really wacky (Borusa is the Doctor's father. and his spirit lives in the Tardis console, or something), but McGann's a great Doctor, and I just would have liked to have seen what real 90's Doctor Who would have been like. In my head it's like an amalgamation of all of the great sci-fi that was going on at the time: X-Files, the Star Trek shows, Red Dwarf. The 90's was a golden era for TV sci-fi.

Well there's your problem. I'll take a gander at the article in a moment. It could be me just being an old man, but taking umbrage with works written in the past because of it's tone, tropes and verbiage is so frustrating to me. Like Tom Sawyer and Nigger Jim, for instance. The seemingly crazy juxtaposition and context of Tom and Jim being "friends" like dynamic not to mention Tom's an actual child calling an adult this and seemingly being both ok with Jim's moniker is an important illustration of the time. Harry Potter is now dated, and so is some of it's ideas, just like it's author surely.

Sure, if you think criticism only extends as far as making moral pronouncements about the author.

But you can absolutely criticise people continuing to swallow old media and all of its implicit attitudes without pointing them out and recognising the problems with their morality. Because the media may have been created in the culture of the time, but we have no choice but to consume it in the culture of today.

Do you really think people will suddenly hate women because they watched Turnabout Intruder? A modern man watching Star Trek goes into it with his morals, and comes out of it with his morals intact. The point of stereotypes is that they're things we don't consciously think about, it's a sort of knee-jerk response in the form of traits we associate with certain demographics or cultures. Nobody is unbiased, no matter how much they may try and tell you otherwise. Everyone falls victim to this way of thinking, because it's ingrained in us by our surrounding culture. The thing that sets people apart as being empathetic and socially conscious, is that they can recognise the stereotypes, and if they feel they're getting too close to perpetuating them, they can step back and amend the situation.

Also, when it comes to fantasy races, a lot of them (see: orcs, goblins, etc.) were initially formed with racist undertones, because they were created at a time when those sorts of attitudes were the norm. But because the fantasy races have become sorta divorced from the original subtext, people forget themselves and continue to write them in a problematic way, because they don't consciously acknowledge the connection between the fantasy races and real-life demographics. It's not to say those fantasy races are always racist, no matter what way you spin it, but rather that sometimes it takes an extra little bit of thinking to re-imagine them in a context and form that doesn't continue an age-old racist trend.

>JACK: Friend of mine. Let's call him Vincent, that was his name after all. Regular guy, girlfriend, likes his sport, likes a beer. He starts acting a little strange, a little distracted. Suddenly he disappears for a couple of months. He comes back, and we've got to start calling him Vanessa. Since then I've always been a little nervous when a friend behaves out of character.

>simple things

You characterize greg right, his dialogue and even the narrator sounds like him. The Graske are the Graske, standard rtd era villain-the most evil thing you could do to humanity is control them or impersonate them. To be honest I appreciate that you really don't feel the need to go out of your way and explain all the details- it gets in the way of the character and for such a character centric story where you want to mimic that youtube-style pacing I think that's brilliant to cut all of it and get to the heart of what your intended point is. I'm going to give this one a…….not revealing it in this half. Kek.but in this one I'll reveal its an 8.

Good job oncoming. Smartly written and a good bite… Of solid characterization.

>Framing Story 4

Movement! Consequences. Niiiice. Jack feels like jack, the dark feeling of the story feels like a good direction for the plot as a whole and I'm quite here to be sandwiching the framing here. Its creepy as all heck that something is forcing Gwen to only remember and focus on Tosh, and gets me really eager to bite into the next framing story. On we go!
