It’s actually insane how much better the show is when the companion has a fun personality like hers. Compare this shit to, like, Martha. Or Clara. Both of them spent most of their time just watching what the Doctor did and acting like he’s fully amazing all the time, but then never quite seeming in over their heads. Clara was the worst because she always seemed to be smarter than the doctor for some reason. She kept being used to explain concepts to the viewer.

Amy worked because

>She’s stubborn and kinda rude

>Never wanted to fuck the doctor

>Had no idea what was going on

>Was always pretty horrified and confused whenever insane sci fi concepts were brought up

She was also my reliablefu. Stayed with her bf for her entire life, and multiple times she waited years for the Doctor. More like my 2d women than the trash that 3D usually has.

Half the main cast is white. The main character of the show is white.

And yet this is still not enough, because now the white people have to be both young, and playing human characters, otherwise it's disenfranchising white people. Letting anyone else have a fucking go at even ONE ASPECT is an attack on white people, apparently. PATHETIC. This is why white grievance is just white supremacy minus the self-awareness, and yet Jim here (like so many others) would probably throw a paddy if you called his comments racist. The last episode of Greatest Show honestly feels like a lost link to the Hartnell era where shit like Celestial Toymaker happened, and it wasn't necessarily a bad thing if there was "wasted time" or repetition in an episode because our relationship with television wasn't quite the same. Also in the sense of a ridiculously ambitious concept (in this case, a battle with gods that exist outside of time) being done on a measly as fuck budget, and thus translated down into the logic of theatre.

I don't think it's actually a bad watch either because it's totally self-aware of the absurdity of doing a pedestrian magic act in this situation, McCoy is pretty funny, and when the banter flows with an exchange like "your time is at an end" "A piece of rope has two ends!" it seems like he might actually be bending concepts and reality. After all the whole premise of magic is that symbols equal reality. I think it is a fair argument that the Doctor is performing legitimate magic in that sequence, going off the logic of the rest of the story and the nature of the realm he's entered.

It's also precisely because he's entered a place outside of time that he can just fuck about, and also that he becomes omniscient of everything that will happen, knowing just when the medallion will arrive. Simultaneously, the culmination of the implicit "the family represent the forever unsatisfied viewing public" commentary is that the Doctor decides to brazenly waste their (and thus our) time, which is kino enough to justify the repetitiveness and lack of plot automatically.

Should the Brig have been killed off there in Battlefield, or are you alright with how they did it in the end?

I'm kind of averse to the idea of a heroic sacrifice for the Brig; the whole logic of it feels almost too cheesy and self-indulgent to suit a character like him. But it would have been a pretty damn good death scene.

 No.66859

Having him survive adds a little something to the end of the episode, another moment, so I like it I guess. "You were supposed to die in bed" is the emotional climax of that supposed sacrifice

Very strange. I just decided to check BritBox and just listen/watch some of the existing stories from S1-S6. To my surprise, I discovered that audiotracks for random missing episodes (with no particular order or reason) have been uploaded. For example - two episodes of the Smugglers are up, but not the other two. When someone plays one of these, a generic photo with the Tardis and the DW logo are there, while one can listen to the audiotrack.

So these stories have one or more missing episodes represented:

Galaxy 4

The Myth Makers

The Smugglers

The Highlanders

The Macra Terror

The Faceless Ones

The Ice Warriors

The Space Pirates

These audiotracks weren't there the last time I checked.

In Paul Cornell’s Four Doctors comic, we see a glimpse of the universe where the Tenth Doctor stays in his Time Lord Victorious phase and abandons Wilf in the radiation chamber. This alt-Ten eventually becomes ruler of the universe, reigning supreme over all time and space until meeting his end at the hands of a Raxarocoricofallicoptarorian assassin.

In parallel, Lance Parkin’s Father Time shows the last surviving Time Lord as supreme emperor of the universe for a thousand years, ruling from the Needle through his ruthless secret police and the power of fear. On the day of his daughter’s birth, he is assassinated by an uprising; his daughter Miranda goes on to be adopted by the Eighth Doctor, and in The Gallifrey Chronicles it’s baaaasically confirmed that this emperor is the Doctor's destiny.

Both these stories seem to be a peek into the same future, where the Tenth Doctor becomes Time Lord Victorious and emperor of the universe. In fact, since Father Time portrays this as the definite future of the universe Eight lives in, we could even say that the Emperor Victorious is the Doctor's "original" future; something must have changed the timeline to turn him off of this path. I hypothesize that it's the return of Gallifrey in The End of Time: in particular, the interference of the mysterious Time-Lock-busting woman in white.

If this timeline change did come so late in Ten’s life, when River Song described “her Doctor” in Silence in the Library, she was actually talking about the Time Lord Victorious. He was the one to marry her, while our Doctor only said hasty vows in a collapsing bubble universe; he was the one to give her a sonic screwdriver, which is clearly a modified version of Ten's, not Eleven's or Twelve's. This idea is quietly supported by her statements in the episode, which suggest that her Doctor still wears Ten's face: for instance, she has to ask him whether he’s lived through the Byzantium, and she says he’s like an “early photograph” of her Doctor.

And what kind of future!Ten does this describe? Who was the man that scared away the Vashta Nerada with just his name?

>Now my Doctor, I’ve seen whole armies turn and run away. And he’d just swagger off back to his Tardis and open the doors with a snap of his fingers. The Doctor in the Tardis. Next stop, everywhere.

Next stop, everywhere. Forget the consequences. Forget the “fixed points”. Forget the rules. Because the Laws of Time are Ten's, and they will obey Him.

Like it's baffling enough that Nicholas "We Love Drashigs" Briggs and friends think these ideas are good, but it's even harder to believe that there is a sizable audience out there who actually wants to hear what Lady Christina and Donna's mum are up to.

I hadn't thought of that before. It's probably a casting issue. They would rather be making 10, 11, 12, Simm, etc. audios but those actors are probably hard to get so they gotta settle for nobodies.

I think it's more than that. Most of the New Series stuff is legitimately bad. It all stems from the inherent issues with BF and why most of their Classic stuff is shit too. How fuckin based would it be if we got an episode where Jodie thinks the witches are aliens, and almost joins in with the hysteria, worrying what the alien witches are capable of. In the end it's a pure historical, the "witches" are just ordinary people.

That bothers me too. Their Doctor Who range is already split far too much, it's really convoluted. They should have released the Classic Doctors New Monsters as episodes in the main range. They could have boxed them together and sold them separately for those that cream over boxsets still.

>>67020

The Heavenly Paradigm was the best story in the boxset (excluding the ending), the Time Lord weapons being caught where they were was genuinely an interesting/entertaining idea.

The Sky Man was the second best, but the fact that BF included a Master-lite audio on a 4-audio War Master boxset is frankly evil. Also it was confusing because they made it sound/seem like cybermen but I think they were meant to be OC Donut Steel.

Yeah I get you. Who has had enough house styles that a lot of directors are difficult to distinguish so it comes down to hard to understand from our vantage point things (how well the actors did on the day, etc.) but there are some recognisable ones…Talalay (although she's pretty chameleonesque), Harper, Gough, Haynes, Hurran, etc.

TV in general is much less director-focused than film for a bunch of reasons. TV is a writer's medium; they're the ones steering the ship and directors on most shows just adhere to the house style decided by whoever did the pilot. Who affords more freedom given how anthology-esque it is but the type of directors Who gets aren't the type to go hard with that.

Are you a big classic who guy? The producer relationship is much easier to understand there since there was no showrunner.

I spend the whole year waiting in anticipation for the next GOAT Eight box set to come out because I know it will be amazingly canon and kino. Nick Briggs is a GOAT writer and kino showrunner and it's honestly so annoying that he's never been asked to write for the revived show, maybe they're just scared his episodes will be so GOAT that he'll outshine them all with how kino his ideas are. 90% of the time, Briggs Finish is far more kino than NuWho anyway, since all of it is so canon and GOAT. However, I also think that while the Doctor is "above" his companions in terms of knowledge and wisdom, he's friendly enough that he and his companions are generally equals. I just don't think that excuse works for anything beyond a deep friendship.

 No.67123

I enjoyed The Witch's Familiar a lot more on a second viewing.

Watched it with subtitles because so much of Julian Bleach's dialogue was inaudible on first viewing.

It was… alright, I suppose.

Yet another very talky episode, where characters exposite and emote at each other while supposedly ruthless killers stand and watch.

The Doctor's "plan" (get hooked up to a life sucking machine and hope that one of the friends you think are dead actually ISN'T dead and comes in at the last minute to zap the machine to which you are attached) is straight out of the Madame Kovarian school of ¤¤¤¤ing dreadful ideas.

I quite liked some of the Missy stuff, mostly with Clara, but when she's taking EVERYTHING as a massive joke it's impossible to build any sense of tension. Hope she's not back for a while as I'm getting really bored with her sitcom slapstick shenanigans.

The best stuff was Clara trapped inside the Dalek and some of the Doctor / Davros stuff. Wasn't keen on the revelation that Davros has two perfectly functioning eyes, but I loved the revelation that "what you see is what you get" in that there isn't much of him at all that isn't visible above his chair.

Loved Capaldi whizzing around in Davros's chair although, again, there was a real lack of a feeling of danger.

In fact, the Daleks haven't felt properly dangerous now since… probably Journey's End, of the top of my head. They just sit on the spot, with additional weakness upon additional weakness added to their list of weaknesses.

I miss the energy of RTD's time in charge. While I still prefer what's being made at the moment to pretty much anything in Matt Smith's time, it does feel slow, samey, and, above all, exceptionally talky.

What the hell ever happened to "show, don't tell"?

Probably looking at 6/10 for this episode, 7/10 for the story as a whole.

ETA - At least this week didn't have a 5 minute "comedy" scene sucking the energy out of the middle. Oh, and the actors (with the exception of the more wildly OTT Gomez stuff, like her little dance every time a Dalek fired its gun. I HATED the bit where she was "dancing" to the Daleks shouting "You will tell us". I mean HATED. It just looks ¤¤¤¤ing stupid) were all outstanding, particularly Capaldi and Coleman.

Just finished Broadchurch S3

I enjoyed it a lot

If I had to sum up each series as an emotion, it would be sadness, rage and disgust. Each series does something unique and there’s a different ‘purpose’ to the story, which I thought was really smart of chibs.

The core purpose of S3 was to be confronting about male/female sexual dynamics, particularly negative male sexual culture - and I would say that it succeeded. Virtually all of the new male characters are genuinely shitty people with fucked up ideas of sex and relationships, and it’s not shy of calling them all out on it - and it made for a good narrative. I think that once again, chibs picked the perfect person to be the culprit. It being a kid who was forced into it by a bad role model really drives the point home that the whole series was about.

Although, I don’t know how accurate the “dad gives son porn and continues the cycle” narrative is - I thought most kids discover porn on their own through the internet because of inevitable curiosity, it seemed a little out of date to show nudie mags and porn DVDs. I don't know of anyone who had their dad show them porn, maybe I’m just oblivious to it since I’m not involved in that culture.

I’ve come around on S2 a bit now, in terms of broadchurch as a whole it definitely makes more sense for joe to have gotten off. It allowed for characterkino that wouldn’t have been possible if they had gotten a happy ending, and happy endings really aren’t the point of the show at all.

S2 was still unpleasant to watch, but that was the intentional direction of that series. I appreciate it as being necessary for the overall narrative. All 3 seasons together work well as one relatively neat story - even though the case of S3 is largely unrelated to everything else and I found the events happening to the original cast as more interesting, the case still tied back to previous events in terms of things like making sure the investigation wasn’t compromised so it couldn’t mess up a trial.

S3’s in a bit of a weird spot where it’s trying to tell a new story, but still has an obligation to continue following the lives of the original cast. As a result of sharing airtime, the new characters didn’t get as much focus and ultimately I didn’t feel the same emotional connection to them that I do the original cast. Most of the original cast sans the detectives and the latimers only had a couple of scenes each in the whole series, but their stories were all wrapped up nicely. Half of the original characters didn’t show up at all, perhaps because there simply wasn’t time or place to make them relevant. If they could have shown up for the church service at the end it would have been nice, though.

My favourite part of S3 was Mark talking to Joe Miller. I really liked what they did with mark and beth in general, it made for some good characterkino.

>"On planet Earth it's generally taken for granted that it's a bad thing to introduce into a narrative some last-minute solution that was totally unexpected and unheralded … The unexpected, unadvertised solution which kisses it all better is known as a deus ex machina – literally, a god from the machine. And a god from the machine is what the Doctor now is,"

>But the sonic screwdriver? I don't think so. Doctor Who's science is pixel thin.

>"into an amalgam of Mother Teresa, Jesus Christ (I laughed my socks off during the Titanic episode when two golden angels lifted the Doctor heavenwards) and Tinkerbell," said Pratchett. "There is nothing he doesn't know, and nothing he can't do. He is now becoming God, given that the position is vacant … Perhaps they should start transmitting the programme on Sundays."

>"pure professionally-written entertainment, even if it helps sometimes if you leave your brain on a hook by the door". "I might shout at the screen again, but I will be watching on Saturday," he admitted. "After all, when you've had your moan you have to admit that it is very, very entertaining, with its heart in the right place, even if its head is often in orbit around Jupiter."

>[…] On a Doctor Who related note, I suppose that was why I was never happy with Russell T Davies's writing on Doctor Who. One of the main reasons for that was that when I'd seen that he was going to be doing something which features Daleks versus Cybermen, I thought, wow, you'd have to be unbelievably clumsy to make a mess of that. It's just so obvious, isn't it? It should be brilliant. And it wasn't brilliant. It wasn't even adequate.

<It wasn't a fair fight, was it?

>It wasn't. It seemed like the entire story had just been based around the desire to announce Daleks versus Cybermen in the Radio Times. So what I wanted was something that would have been much bugger and full of strange reverses that were due to the nature of the abilities of the combatants. I'm not quite sure where that would have gone, but it probably would have been quite spectacular and cosmic.

<Sticking with Russell T Davies, it's interesting that he relaunches it with the idea of the Time Lords losing a Time War at the heart of his Doctor Who.

>I didn't watch many of the episodes. But I'm afraid that I really found the writing in a lot of the earlier ones not to my taste. I'm not criticising it, because I've got very cranky and extreme tastes. Obviously the audience loved a lot of that stuff, so it's not for me to knock it. But just personally, I've seen a few of the Steven Moffat ones. The Matt Smith ones. I found them more consistent. There are less gaping plot holes that are thinly papered over with a little bit of pseudo-scientific waffle. The stories seem to me to be better constructed. Yes, there are still those bits where you don't have to look at it too closely or it'll unravel, but I think that, for example, with his playing around with the effects of time travel, it seems to be a lot more clearly thought through than in the Russell T Davies episodes.

Alan Moore confirmed for Moffchad. (The interview was held in 2010 btw.)

thanks neo

I didn't mention it but I thought hardy's tinder date was a neat little commentary on how weird and unnatural tinder culture is compared to 'traditional' dating, as a little aside to the overall point of S3 being sexual dynamics

I'm very surprised to see Moore having an in-depth views on modern Doctor Who at all. Previously, I thought his opinion was almost entirely summed up with him saying that everything past Hartnell was shit.

>I'm not quite sure where that would have gone, but it probably would have been quite spectacular and cosmic.

This a pretty pleb opinion to be honest. Hard to imagine he's enough of a nerd to get excited about the idea of the Daleks and Cybermen fighting each other.

>famous for capeshit

>wrote comics about the Time Lords having a 4-dimensional war

>not enough of a nerd

He probably liked the idea specifically for its potential to be mind-bending and imaginative, rather than for the hollow nostalgic pleasure your average anorak got out of it.

He's famous for hating capeshit too, so it's bizarre to see him gagging for it in 2010.

But his gripe with RTD's handling of it is basically the same as his gripe with modern capeshit, it's not challenging the imagination of the viewers.

100%. I like your take in your big post tbw, very similar to mine.

How would a "spectacular and cosmic" battle between Daleks and Cybermen challenge anything? It would still be fanservice, just with more explosions

 No.67277

How do people even watch S3 of Broadchurch? I've seen all of S1 and S2 but only watched the first 15 minutes or so of S3. The show is depressing already, but that just felt way too dark.

Like he said, by actually exploring the contrast in ideology between the two factions. I couldn't tell you how specifically that would show up on screen, but I'm not Alan Moore.

Being Alan Moore wouldn't help you much here, since he also said "I'm not quite sure where that would have gone".

i think they'd need to put a lot of thought into what makes cybermen and daleks different, given that they're both cyborgs seeking to eliminate their human flaws. daleks obviously went a lot further and should be the strongest, so it'd be interesting to have the cybermen defeat the daleks since it'd sort of prove their philosophy wrong given that the most human-like of the two would win.

It's pretty inconsistent honestly, but in general unless I'm tired or have reason to be up early (in which case I'd go to bed earlier) I still try to go to sleep around 1-2 because I don't want to relapse into staying up all night

starting at midnight is a decent compromise between time zones I think

Most people are pretty mum on the time issue so I don't know if the britanons and USanons might even be amenable to changing it more. I completely get where you're coming from. I'll ask people on tonight more about the best times.

In the meantime if you ever want to kind of follow along or anything, all the links are here
