Kino tax was a term coined by casualwhostream user TOMTIT on March 3, 2018. It was originally used in reference to the obligatory inclusion of "iconic" monsters such as the Daleks, Cybermen and Weeping Angels in Hell Bent. The definition of the term quickly expanded to include anything and everything that we viewers must suffer through as the price for kino - anything that's done "because it's the done thing", "because we need it for the kids", "because we need to sell toys", or countless other similar justifications. As a concept, it usefully encapsulates a major aspect of the abusive relationship between Doctor Who and its loyal viewers.

I always wanted to ask; what are your own thoughts on the haunted house monster fun ride bit in Hell Bent? Have any positive take on it or do you just agree it's a kino tax?

 No.68147

The Chibnall era will be a kino audit.

 No.68148

>>68146

I liked it desu, I really like the matrix stuff s8 and s9 does and I thought it was suitable for an ep that's so about going back to the foundations of the show and launching it anew. Maybe on rewatch I'd think of your perspective more and come away with a different take though. What about it specifically bothers you, just that it's a litany of monsters quickly?

>>68147

lmao

 No.68149

>>68148

Yeah, just that it seems so arbitrary and inconsequential—and the idea that Moff put it in there because he thought the episode needed something action-y and marketable to break up the long stretches of characterkino can't escape me, and it's somewhat disappointing. It's such a tiny part of the episode though, so it doesn't *really* bother me, it's just a very :really: sort of moment. Doesn't meaningfully lower my appreciation of the whole work.

 No.68150

>>68146

It's a kino tax but the idea of creatures getting caught in the Matrix like a spider's web is actually pretty fucking cool.

There is also a subversive meta element in the idea of the Doctor descending into "hell", and finding within it forced merchandise monster cameos (Doctor Who's own form of hell).

 No.68151

>>68149

Oh, I do think "Exterminate… me" is kind of fun though, but probably belongs in a different episode.

 No.68152

File: 3d2fea1063b4f4b⋯.png (243.82 KB, 400x400, 1:1, ClipboardImage.png)

 No.68153

Monsters in cobwebs would be a cool image if not for the fact that the episode doesn't actually change the nature of them, they're still just "gah! scaree!"

 No.68154

>>68149

Ahh the action part, I getcha, didn't think of that. I assume you have the same complaint for the Angels in Time of the Doctor?

>>68150

Good take

 No.68155

>>68154

>I assume you have the same complaint for the Angels in Time of the Doctor?

Yeah, to a slightly lesser extent though because it didn't seem quite as out-of-sync with the rest of the story's tone to me. I have no problem with the Seige sequences, though.

Now the Doctor, and here's the bloody thing about the Doctor. He represents order but also chaos, and is a classic example the Jungian Trickster archetype.

The Doctor and the Master are a perfect representation of the hostile brothers motif, and the Doctor will always beat the Master, because the Master, he represents greed and resentment, and is probably a Communist too.

Regeneration is like the passing of the torch to the next generation, and every incarnation must rediscover himself, like Pinocchio saving his father from the belly of the whale, the "heart of the Tardis", if you will.

So Jettison your swimming pool, Bucko.

I would cum if they ever adapted Daak for the TV series. Because of the slight self-awareness that went into his conception (he uses a fucking CHAIN-SWORD ffs), he's just the kind of exaggerated archetypal character you can almost imagine turning up in a script of Holmesian or Adamsian brilliance, poking fun at a certain kind of silly action hero but still being immensely likeable.

The real problem is that one scene of him cutting down Daleks would eviscerate their credibility as villains for the rest of time.

So you can even have it as your 2nd favourite. What exactly is so bad about this take? Like at the end of the day if the fucked up portrayal of Chinese people doesn't even remotely hinder your opinion of Talons' excellence as Doctor Who or your enjoyment of it, and you don't prefer ANYTHING else in ALL OF DOCTOR WHO, what does that actually say about you?

It's not about Chinese people. It's about British attitudes towards Chinese people, using stereotypes as a means to tell a story. Chang himself says "I know we Chinese all look the same", one of many such jokes. The only unfortunate aspect of it is having Chang be a white man in yellowface, but that is just a sad fact about the 70s in general and the ready availability and use of strong Chinese actors.

Chiang is a story, and you can enjoy it as such, while also agreeing that certain aspects of it are racist when viewed through a modern lens. The two stances are not mutually exclusive

>"I know we Chinese all look the same"

I always took that as him humouring them.

Also, I don't really care that much about people of one race, playing people of another race. It's called acting, right? Proper racial casting is good, just for better believability, but I don't really see it as a moral issue.

There's a world of difference between Boris Karloff playing an Egyptian mummy, and Boris Karloff mocking Egyptians or insinuating that all Egyptian people are bad in some capacity.

 No.68360

>[…] the anti-Chinese sentiment in this story comes down to the fact that every single Chinese character is playing off of Fu Manchu-inflected yellow peril stereotypes and treated as a villain based purely on the fact that they're Chinese. And the fact that the main Chinese character, Li H'sen Chang, is played in yellowface.

>[…] the Doctor and Leela display the same attitudes about the Chinese as everyone else. The Doctor describes the Chinese men who attacked him as "little men," and generally acts as though he broadly agrees with everyone else's characterizations of the Chinese. Leela, on the other hand, refers to Chang as "the yellow one." This is problematic in the extreme. It's one thing for the supporting cast to be stereotypes bound by the attitudes and conventions of the time and genre they're playing in. But the Doctor and Leela are supposed to transgress against the conventions of the settings they land in. That's the point. When even they're spouting racist slurs, it's pretty hard to say that the problem is one of satire.

Is it just me, or does it seem like feminist fans just want to upset male fans above all else?

It really feels like like the Feminist fans DON'T want a show for everyone because they absolutely despise the male fans and want to upset them above all else… They never say WHY they think this looks good other then "look its a woman now! take that fanboys!".

We get this horrible double standard where we are constantly told how marvelous it is that little girls have someone they can look up to, whilst anyone who is upset that little boys have lost a character to look up to is abused as a disgusting sexist. Its cynical, and manipulative.

When they first announced it I WAS completely on board: the idea seemed neat, the costume seemed fine, and we never heard her awful accent. But the general Misandry, the pride flag shirt and flood pants costume, the dildo shaped sonic, the 3-4 companions that exist ONLY to check ever "exclusivity" box. We already HAD an old man perfect for the companion role: Donna Nobel's father! Or what about that black street artist kid from a few seasons back, he SAW the doctor and inside of the tardis, he would have been cool to see again.

Why change an existing show with over 10 MILLION fans into something nobody really wanted, that would be like if suddenly Wendys stopped making burgers and only sold salads, and then went on to called their existing consumer base "fat, lazy assholes".

There are MANY great, interesting, cool female characters that could have had their own spinoff show: 10's half daughter "clone", Missy before it was revealed she was the master, Sarah Jones, that girl with the scarf and inhaler, hell, even that stupid ass thing with Clara and the immortal girl in a fucking 50's dinner tardis! It felt like that was the POINT of that whole thing… Are we just going to forget that happened?

It seems like a bad business decision to listen to the loudest, yet smallest group of fans you have! Just look at THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. Most fans are reasonable, non-sexists who just want to see the show they love stay true to what got it over 10 MILLION people to call it their favorite show.

What if suddenly an important female character was taken away? Alien but with a buff guy named "rip"? Kill bill without the bride? Jessica Jones changed to "Jay Jones" oh boy ANOTHER alcoholic male detective, Terminator, Buffy, etc!

In a world of trump, nazi's, Russian weirdness, and bad movies with Chris Pratt or (insert ripped male lead here), I feel more than ever boys need a NON VIOLENT, meat-headed, outsider character who preaches peace, acceptance, and science! I would be equally upset if they made the doctor an action star who solved ever problem with punching and guns! I mean I know from experience people with autism, aspergers, social anxiety, or things of that nature FLOCK to things like doctor who, and sherlock, because its rare to see "someone like them" represented so well on tv, and not insultingly and one dimensional by shitty sitcoms and movies, (Sheldon from big bang, Abed from community, that autistic young surgeon show, that stupid fucking "The Accountant)" movie) "Oh boy, that guy doesn't quit know how to interact with people! Look how wacky the social situations can get!"

This just sucks, and its horrible we can't have a reasonable conversation about it without someone calling you "a whiny fanboy" and people praising and touting the show JUST because its a woman, Imagine if men praised something JUST because the lead was male regardless of quality or social implication. Why can't people create NEW and MORE INTERESTING things for women to star in, instead of constantly remaking things people already liked. OR remake shitty things that nobody cares about and make them great on there own! Like a "Furiosa movie" from mad max sounds amazing!

I just hate seeing pillars of my child hood fall due to "Social justice" and studio meddling. R.I.P Doctor Who and Star Wars. Not looking forward to the future of entertainment… (stay the FUCK away from back to the future)

This whole thing is so bizarre. I get that the people who are digging up these things and trying to get people fired are reprehensible people in their own right, who have said and done things worse themselves, what I don't get is why because of that fact you get people like this writing "#HarmonDidNothingWrong" right above an imagine of Harmon pretending to rape a doll of a baby.

I hate the right as much as anyone but I would never in a million years associate myself and defend all these edgy jokes Gunn, etc. did in the past.

 No.68391

You think pretending to rape a doll as a joke is morally wrong?

 No.68392

I agree it's pretty weird and amusing being all x did nothing wrong and I assume that tweet is somewhat of an outlier, but I think people do deserve some defense from harsh consequences in the present day for edgy jokes they made 10 years ago if they've shown meaningful progress since then. It's not like it's the same as being outed as an abuser.

 No.68393

>>68392

>if they've shown meaningful progress since then

It's a joke. It shouldn't matter if you made it today or ten years ago. Comedy isn't an unlawful, or morally reprehensible act.

 No.68394

what happened to rape jokes never being funny?

There was a time where making a rape joke was seen as something completely distasteful and not in good humor AT ALL, you'd be criticized endlessly and could lose your job over it.

Why is it that this standard changes when its CHILD rape jokes, shouldnt those be taken with much more scrutiny?

Why are rape jokes bad and evil and only made by the most bigoted people but CHILD RAPE jokes are just edgy jokes that you dont deserve to lose your job over? it's bizarre

>>68392

>I agree it's pretty weird and amusing being all x did nothing wrong and I assume that tweet is somewhat of an outlier

True, I haven't come across anything quite that extreme myself but I have seen plenty of leftists talking about rehiring Gunn.

>but I think people do deserve some defense from harsh consequences in the present day for edgy jokes they made 10 years ago if they've shown meaningful progress since then

I guess, I just find it hard to be sympathetic. A rich person who said a whole bunch of edgy shit years ago losing their job is not something that inspires me to rally and fight. I really don't care. It's not like they dredged up something from when he was a teenager, he was in his 40's.

>It's not like it's the same as being outed as an abuser.

That's true. The fact that Disney fired him over this but still employee Depp for instance is insane.

 No.68400

>>68398

I agree, that still doesn't mean Disney should continue to employ a guy with humor like that when they're target audience is largely children.

Of course that's up to disney, i couldnt care less if he got rehired or not.

 No.68401

>>68400

Why do you think that people with personally edgy humor can't make something appropriate for children?

 No.68402

>>68401

you're misrepresenting what I said, im saying from DISNEYS perspective it doesnt make sense to have someone like that be the face of their family friendly franchise, of course he can make something appropriate for children but that wont stop parents from boycotting if they think the guys a paedo

 No.68403

>>68400

Well, that's Disney. If they're determined to retain their family friendly image (which I think is thoroughly dead at this point) then that's probably a wise business decision.

But punishing Dan Harmon over edgy humour would be especially bizarre, considering his job is to write edgy late night comedy, that often makes light of the most awful things.

It's kind of like firing a gangster rapper for saying "nigger" on Twitter, when you just got done publishing his new album "Nigger Nigger Nigger My Nigger".

 No.68404

>>68403

yeah that's a fair call on Harmon. still I find it genuinely hilarious when rich assholes lose their jobs so I wouldn't be mad if they both got fired.

 No.68405

>>68399

I think it's just worse in this case because the firing demonstrates that /pol/-types, far-right shock bloggers etc. can attack whoever upset them today by completely blurring notions of morality, which is an absolutely atrocious precedent to set and will surely encourage more similar tactics.

 No.68406

>>68404

Well, I think Harmon's a dickhead, and I wont cry for him, but I see no reason he should be fired.

I've decided to share the details of my upcoming yaoi light novel series. Please not that while the terms may be similar, this is NOT an omegaverse series.

In this series exists an ancient deity by the name of priapus. He represents the penis, sex and male sexuality. He blessed his kin with his pheromones and vitality, giving birth to the meta humans of today. The world is currently being infested by demons of mysterious origins and a group of warriors must rise.

That's where priapus academy comes in.

It's a prestigious all male academy that breeds alpha and Omega students to become valiant heroes to slay these demons.Every student receives a shaft of priapus dildo which to sit on to pray to the origin of their powers.

Alpha men are trained in weaponry and martial arts.they make pacts will omegas in order to become an ultimate duo. They have a naturally higher libido that must be tamed.

Omega are born with a pheromone aura which raises the arousal of everyone around them. They are the bottom in the relationship and often are tasked with chores and are seen as lesser. Must also cator to the fetishes of the alpha unless it's illegal or will cause severe harm.Theye a affinity for controling tantra energy, a form of power born from lust and sex.

Sex with an Omega can empower the strength of an alpha greatly . If a pure love is formed between a pair then they both will receive unparalleled power.Due the nature of tantra magic, many porn stars were scouted to become facility members. The school also serves as a government assistance since they are more capable than the military than slaying demons. People on the inside see the students as heroes but there's alot who simply see them as slutty pawns.

That's all I have for now. I know this terminology may seem silly to alot of people but the whole point of the series is to have erotic fun while also telling a action adventure story.

So, the thing I tried to do as much as possible was make the actor reveals entertaining, first by raising anticipation about them with the hints in earlier parts. I wanted, wherever possible, to avoid just having a segment be, say, a wikipedia article about the actor, and where I had to I still tried my best to make the reveal entertaining.

9 was no problem, though. The moment I decided who should play 9 I knew exactly how to introduce him.

The hard part with 9, ultimately, was deciding why he would only stay for one series. Now, I could have gone the other way, I could have had Aiden Gillen stay around for three years as 9 and completely change the premise, but given how closely I'd hewn to the timeline for earlier actors to the point of picking a Master who died the same year as Delgado, I figured I should contrive something. It turned out to be easy enough if you just assume he's not very loyal for a hired gun.

That was the other hard part with 9, not baneposting *too* much.

10 was an odd one, for the longest time I had no idea who to cast for the part and just left the spot blank, then I was looking at some previews from 2005 for something else and I realized that Richard Harrington is basically the welsh David Tennant, only not as famous, which is a real shame. This is also around the time that the actor actually becomes important to the writing process, both for the writers' ideas of how they should speak and how much leeway they had in adlibbing. Thus, recasting 10 automatically means you have to rewrite “I don't want to go”.

The “Rise of the Cybermen” bit was the last one I wrote for the story, and is only there because it's vaguely the premise of the story. The story, and this is probably obvious, is actually two separate ideas I'd had (“a world where all the Doctors are played by non-English/scotch actors” and “what was the Doctor of Pete's world like?”) that didn't really have anything to do with each other intrinsically. I welded them together best I could with the whole “the republic is young” thing, which comes dangerously close to implying why Pete's Britain is a republic. I more or less believe the Tooth and Claw theory.

Alexander Siddig as Yana I honestly came up with late in the game, I was originally going to aim for some Irish or Welsh Shakespearean, but then I was watching… gosh, must have been Gotham, I guess, and it just clicked.

Andrew Scott as Aralt Celt was the second joke I ever wrote for this story, and is probably the most forced joke in there, but it was a lot of fun to write his version of Utopia. And, as I said, putting John Simm in a tumblr slashfic was something I felt ashamed of until I read the rest of the anthology.

Pierce Brosnan was a little treat just for me.

 No.68617

>>68616

11 was just about impossible to cast because finding an actor with the same level of fame as “Matt Smith if he was never the Doctor” is like trying to figure out who “that one guy” was in a movie you saw a year and a half ago. Either way, IMDB is a big help. Ben Mitchell is very attractive, fairly tall, hammy as fuck, and played a doctor in a soap opera so he was clearly the man for the job. He's also frightfully fit, a real look-at-my-muscles type.

The Name of the Doctor was the first scene I wrote for the whole thing, as I mentioned before. I wanted a Jamaican 11 because that sort of voice really sells the concept right away, but I couldn't find an actor that fit my criteria. Anthony Hopkins, however, he was a treat. Though, up to the night of submission I had him down as “Sir Anthony Hopkins” before I remembered what the entire premise of the story is.

Speaking of, the /who/ post about Night of the Doctor is legit (almost every cited post number in the story is legit) and also drops some implications about Curse of Fatal Death.

I wrote the Day of the Doctor segment before I read the novelization, and I'm not sure which is more confusing put in text this way.

12 was a strange choice, I forget exactly how I landed on him but once the idea popped into my head it was basically stuck. The Eruditorum post on him is a little janky because of how little I changed it from the original, and the additional blog post was just me wanking to establish the tone of the Byrne doctor. Oddly, that blog gave the most headaches in formatting: for some reason, the pdf software absolutely refused to render it as a bulletpoint list.

Alison Doody as Missy was so much fun to write because I love drunken dominant milfs, so writing any Missy is lots of fun. I'm not sure how or why I chose to >imply Chang Lee sent her a dick pic, that just sorta came out as I was writing it. Actually, all the Master scenes in Relative Dimensions are extremely sexual, between 3 and the Master wrestling and Aralt Celt putting so much into “I like it when you use my name” that I had to write it with a tilde. If I ever go back and write more for this, which I may in the future, I'm gonna have to do Gostelow in Castrovalva molesting the fuck out of Adric.

There's a bit towards the end here that was oddly difficult to write, where some /who/res discuss Jazz Hands. I really wanted it to be a longer discussion that hits all the highlights of /who/-cast Doctors, with a reference to Jazz Hands, Epoch, and Marshall, but there was no way I could line up that timeline in one discussion. Instead, I just shoved in as much as I could where I could. Probably the Commonwealth Epoch Doctor is… I don't know… probably Eric Bana.

And then the last Commonwealth Doctor: Eve Myles as 13. I originally had a part planned for the first half that was formatted as a modern BBC or Radio Times article about “the new Doctor” but never mentioned who it was, with the idea being that the article was about the other time a Doctor was played by an actor who'd already been in the program. Basically, a Capaldi/Colin Baker homage. However, it fell apart when I couldn't make the casting for 6 line up, and that's a shame because it was one of my favorite bits of foreshadowing. Anyways, Myles isn't just Commonwealth 13, she's also Commonwealth Capaldi. If I could have found a letter she sent to Radio Times when she was a kid I would have put that in there somewhere too. And I was pleased as punch to book-end the series with Luke Evans as Commonwealth David Bradley.

That's pretty much the long story short.

 No.68740

>>68733

I could see a decent argument against this but as of Series 6 at least I don't really think the Torchwood range is especially banking off nostalgia as all of its plotlines and characters bar Jack are original to the audios now. Plus there are multiple TW audios that have literally nothing to do with any TW characters, events, settings, etc on TV. And I maintain that the Classic Doctors in the River audios are mostly just a kino tax for marketability, as the best audios in those sets are always ones with just River in original stories, usually of a characterisation not especially replicating Moffat's take. I do agree with your point overall for sure though.

>>68737

If I ran BF I'd just give Goss whatever he wanted and leave him alone (apart from suggesting he hires Noel Clarke as a writer), fire most everyone else, convince Shearman to return, get Mortimore and Hall on lock as inhouse writers, try my best (and fail) to bring Loz over, then spend my days lazily leafing through young new writers work to see who seemed a good hire. I'd cancel most ranges and consolidate 4/5/6/7/8 into a single range.

 No.68741

>>>68728

In retrospect the 9th Doctor is kind of shit. Everything about him feels like an expression of the embarrassment that surrounded Doctor Who in the post cancellation years. They wanted to get as far away from the image of the old worldy fop in strange clothing as they could. He's just like a normal guy you could meet in a pub, and I think that's missing the point a bit. Ecclestone's a good enough actor, and he made him likable, but the whole vibe of the character is off.

Moffats insecurity is most obvious when you look at the writers for every single River Song episode. He wouldn’t let anyone else writer her in case they did it better than him and fans asked for more than a woman totally dependant on the doctors attention.

Not really unfortunately. Those are definitely the two highlights. The 10DAs are mildly enjoyable (there are two arguably actual good stories in them - I do genuinely recommend Infamy of the Zaross). If you count the 1DAs as New Series (like BF does, for some reason…I guess since Bradley 1 is from NewWho), they're comfy. TW and River are probably good because they're so liberated from having to be very Doctor Who, let alone very New Who, and the writers get a lot of freedom to just do whatever they want over there. We're doing a TW rewatch integrating all the audios if you're interested; next stream's tomorrow.

It's more that he's so mundane and of that particular time period. If you saw someone dressed like the 9th Doctor walking down the street in 2005, you'd think nothing of it.

Nothing wrong with him being Northern or the choice of actor, just the effort to make the Doctor "cool and modern" seems to completely miss the point. He has an alien perspective, and never settles in one time period for long. He's not going to be in touch with the current trends.

Yeah the TW range is surprisingly ambitious and better than the TV show in aggregate imo (it has nothing beating Children of Earth but it's definitely stronger than s1/s2/s4 imo). They have an "official" continuation of the show actually labelled as series 5 (RTD was somewhat involved with it, designing some characters and consulting on some of the story and character choices) but their best stuff is in their more or less standalone monthly releases that dart all over the place (during the TV show, long after it, long before it, random original stories in the 40s and 70s, etc.). The guy running the range, James Goss, seems to really know what he's doing. He brings in loads of new writers too, which doesn't really happen anywhere else at BF.

Desu I never even really liked River until her audios but they were so on point I did a total 180 and now love the character. Yeah River is in a few of 8's Doom Coalition stories but they're pretty inessential imo. She was actually a last minute addition; her parts were originally written for a different character but BF kind of had a sudden realisation moment while editing the scripts that, now they had the NewWho licence, they could legit do stuff like adding River into 8's main stories.

I shit on BF a lot but credit where it's due, TW and River are great ranges. I even pay for em sometimes.

>They wanted to get as far away from the image of the old worldy fop in strange clothing as they could. He's just like a normal guy you could meet in a pub, and I think that's missing the point a bit

I think this was a good thing. They stripped back a lot of accumulated ideas about the character and figured out a new way for him to work, namely "what if this plain bloke was actually hiding a cosmic depth of feeling". 9's regular chap appearance is arguably a front hiding his more strange, feminine sides, and some of the most rewarding moments in S1 are where they show through. He's a figure of contrasts.

20 Jul 2018 — This latest update comes with a warning.

Be wary of Rob Cassidy on Twitter. I had a recent encounter with him, and he is despicable in his attitude towards other tweeters. He made the following insult towards one of my followers: "This coming from a Pokemon fan, what are you, 11? Come back when you've grown some pubic hair"., and also called another tweeter a 'snowflake'.

These attacks were all unprovoked, and to add further insult to injury he had the nerve to tweet me his jubilant response to GirlyLetters' suspension.

We cannot let people like him to get to us in our campaign for GirlyLetters to be reinstated. We must let it make us stronger and more determined to fight for the justice we desire. We are stronger when we fight for what we believe in than when we give up and curl into a shell.

It still has the baggage of being a sequel to the TFA though, which is something that's hard to get around. I mean, what do you even do with a character like Snoke?
