/who/ BOOK CLUB - SHIT TRIPS: VOLUME 2.5

CONTROVERSIAL EDITION

=====

Sorry for the late post. Today's line-up of writers is comprised of figures with interesting, if in some cases obscure, reputations. The short stories are also all concerned with post-2014 Who material.

TODAY'S STORIES:

「Vats of Urine」

>By Fun2Building

What if Clara hit the jackpot?

Radical 12

>By Miller

What if the Twelfth Doctor had been rather more RADICAL, in the sort of adventure that makes you go FUCK YEAH?

Merlin’s Way

>By Gallifrey Immigrant

What if April from Class and the Merlin incarnation of the Doctor had an adventure together?

A Burgpreppach Missive

>By Judy

What if a wormhole at Tungsuka contained a bizarre missive familiar to us?

Read, enjoy, discuss, reflect, shitpost.

Got questions about a story? Was there something you thought was GOAT? Memeyness that made you laugh? Let us all know. The floor is open all day.

If you wrote a story and you want to answer/ask questions in authorial capacity, consider a temporary trip.

Make it obvious which story you're posting about, & browse sensibly if you don't want to get spoiled on any stories. Hide this post with Filter -> Post+ to hide all replies.

In a few years people will realise TUAT was a pre-emptive strike against Chibnall in the same way TEOT was against Moffat, but far more sophisticated.

A whole episode about the Doctor having become exhausted with the show endlessly dragging on, accompanied by a fraudulent resurrected image of Hartnell espousing a toxically dumbed-down "good vs evil" approach to the premise, a storyline virtually devoid of event, and nothing that actually convinces 12 that he should carry on with life other than him randomly deciding to in the last few minutes.

The sensible argument against 12 in the episode is that he isn't seeing the full picture and there's still more new value that can be found in life if he changes his perspective, i.e. gets a new showrunner and regenerates into a woman for the first time. Happy ending, right?

Now imagine how utterly and irreparably SUBVERTED that answer becomes if the ensuing era is the bland, safe, approval-seeking wasteland of vacuity that Chibnall will probably deliver purely for the sake of prolonging the IP's monetary value? In other words, exactly what 12 was scared of in the first place? By the end of S13, when Chibnall has failed to rise to Moffat's challenge, we will have learnt that 12 was right all along.

Please note I don't actually think any of it was intentional (as entertaining as that idea is). I don't think RTD deliberately set out to undermine Moffat when he wrote "some new man goes walking away and I'm dead" then had 10 randomly visit every single fucking character. But the dark well that is the end of a showrunner's tenure - the need to mine out a justification for a sense of finality and a last big statement about Doctor Who when everything has already been used up by prior seasons; the naturally low stakes when someone else is already prepared to take over - seems to have a habit of unearthing these inadvertently fatalistic drives within the show, a subconscious loathing of what it might end up becoming if forced to continue.

Look at him. The big masculine working class actor. The macho wideboy sauntering up to the effete fop born with a pompadour on his head. He goes for the Predator shake, the classic arm wrestle handshake. He's worked out for years, ever since he got kicked off Thor 2 and Fortitude and Doctor Who. Who's this 12 year old anyways? He can crush him.

Their hands make contact and in that moment it all comes crashing down. He feels a grip that's equal to his own, or near enough. But what startles and staggers him is the arm it's attached to. This man-boy, he's wiry. Deceptive. And the chest this arm is anchored to, by god, it's packed like a Puerto Rican's car. Eccleston's mind reels. Here he is, well into his 50s, challenging a young man like he's some silverback, not realizing he's just made eye-contact with the great white hunter armed with an elephant gun.

"Chris, great to meet you!" Matt says with an easy smile, showing no fear or concern for the cameras. Then, he leans in with theatrical conspiracy and whispers into Eccleston's ear, "Look at my muscles."

***

Christopher Eccleston was found dead today in his hotel room of an apparent suicide. The actor was undoubtedly best known for playing the main character of Doctor Who for one season before being replaced by the tenth Doctor, David Tennant. David Tennant, born David MacDonald in Bathgate, Scotland in 1971, was the most popular actor to play the role since fourth Doctor Tom Baker. Tennant said of the program that working on Doctor Who was his dream since childhood, and remained in the part for three seasons as well as a series of specials, and returned to the role in 2013 for the 50th anniversary of the series. Tennant was followed by fan favorite Matt Smith, the youngest actor to ever take the role. Ecclestone was 54.

Bringing back Loz for an episode of the week and handcuffing him so he can't do what he wants to defile the lore exposes him as a writer. 2.empress of mars with it's base under siege and imperialism friendly stylings was a lot closer to troughton than pertwee. 3.RTD couldnt write a story about a classic series who villain as dark as WEaT. Apart from the big tradgun Dalek battle with pew pew cgi lasers, is there anything in Into The Dalek that isn't done better somewhere else in Capaldi's run?

Actually I just thought of one - it has uniquely good callous-12 dialogue, probably because it's from before they'd figured out what kind of character he was going to be so they went really ham on it. It's unrecognisable as the portrayal Capaldi ultimately settles on, but he makes it really fucking entertaining somehow.

That ep is singlehandedly responsible for the "12 is a callous jerk" characterization. It shows up in other eps, but it's mainly in here. The fact that it was the 2nd ever ep gives it prominence in people's minds. The thing is, callous 12 isn't just being an ass–he's usually refusing to be sentimental due to the fact that he sees it as wasting time used to save people,or it's him annoyed at others asking him to be sentimental ("Top layer, if you want to say a few words." is annoyance at people asking him to mourn a man who he couldn't have saved anyway), or it's part of a distancing effect, sort of a "I only let true friends show the depth of my emotion. It's also a cynicism about military institutions, and how quickly they go to violence (thus "Crying's for civilians. It's how we communicate with you lot",(in reference to an army girl putting a gun on him) "It's a rollercoaster with you, isn't it?" ). There's also the remarks to Clara's physical traits, which is either just him being socially awkward, or him trying to distance her emotionally.

There's good in-character reasons for his apparent coldness, but they are really complex, which leads to "12 was just being unlikeable in Series 8 for no reason". (Clara also has similar complexity, which is why she's also called unlikeable.)

 No.72181

Moreover, another trait that Into the Dalek shows about Twelve is utter distrust of insitiutions as a whole to work with people. Specifically, he doesn't like military especially, but it spreads to all institutions. It's also why he doesn't like how Maeb is treated in Forest of the Night–it comes off as an anti-med message, but it's more that he's angry that the institution of mental health wasn't able to give Maeb the special attention she needed, and instead just gave her meds. The point is that she was given a blanket solution to an invidual problem (again, the execution is botched badly). The concept of "individual help is better than institutional blanket solutions" is echoed in Ep 1 of Series 8, where 12 says he prefers the on-the-ground view to the big-picture horizon, and get reinforced several times, ending with the Doctor rejecting a "become an army" solution for the "help individually" option.

I'm not sure if that theme is in the later 12 series as strongly. (Arguably, Series 9 is about the ramifications of the "individual help is better" decison.) But it's interesting that one of the moments that is widely considered out-of-character for 12 is when he decides to work with an evil institution (the Monks) to eventually subvert them, without even seeming to care about how many individuals will suffer and die in the meantime.

One last thing–12's anti-institution stance, and his suspicion of them, makes him nearly a conspiracy theorist at times. He gets side-tracked in Robots of Sherwood because he believes there has to be a conspiracy (tho that's also tied into his disbelief about his own sense of heroism.) Listen really starts with 12 creating a conspiracy theory.

(Other Doctors distrust institutions too, but to a lesser extent, I think, or at least they hide it better. )

I certainly didn't! But thank you anyway. I wasn't even intending to.

>April's on point for Class(

I really like April, so i couldn't resist a chance to add her in.

I'll just explain about the idea for the fic:

Basically, NuWho killed the idea of ever having a Merlin Doctor.

I mean, a true Merlin Doctor era would need to be several series worth of the Doctor staying rooted in one place, and dealing with magical creatures, while tying up loose ends for several seasons and eras ago. It's unlikely to happen in NuWho, as it would be a really weird diversion, and a very fannish one. For it to happen well, it would require someone fannish enough to care about it. The showrunners of NuWho are unlikely to have the nostalgia for Seventh Doctor's era to actually want to do this, rather then their own ideas. They'll probably have nostalgia for early NuWho, meaning that we're more likely to get Slitheen or Curator return than the Merlin Doctor.

But, on a deeper level, even if we get a Merlin Doctor, it won't be the same as the Classic Who and EU's version. EU made him the red-haired manipulator who was hinted to be the final incarnation. NuWho, by its nature, will not make him the version we would have seen from Classic Who (for one, the Doctor may or may not have countless regens now). The original version of Merlin Doctor won't be seen, and worse, may not be seen in any case.

So, symbolizing "NuWho killed off possibility of Merlin Doctor" by saying DotD made sense.

But of course, in the future where Classic Who kept on going till we got Merlin Doctor played by Stephen Fry or whatever, we probably wouldn't have gotten Class. Class is the specific result of the BBC trying to capitalize on its flagship rebooted show–it's the indirect result of the cancellation of Classic Who. So, making it the result of DotD's events made sense.

Plus, I wanted to show how one could have the "DotD cancelled the War", while still showing some consequences.

Also, the "Doctor with the brown coat and spiky hair" is supposed to be the Tenth Doctor. (I've always liked the theory that the reason the Twelfth Doctor randomly let the Class bunch alone to deal with alien threats, and is so blase about it, is because past-him met a future version of them when they become a well-ordered team.)

 No.72191

 No.72193

>>72191

Colin Morgan is fine as a reference, though it does change the performance a bit. I saw this Merlin as an older man, but a younger Merlin might add something here, as part of the theme is about lost potential being cut off.

As a side note, April is probably the only member of the cast this could work for, besides Tanya, and that version would have had more discussion about "privilege." Notably, I think Tanya might get angrier about the homeless man's condition, but I'm not sure she would have sat on the ground with him.

(Charlie would have just thought he was weird, and wondered if it was a obscure human custom. Ram wouldn't have talked with him as much, though he would have helped. Miss Quill would have laughed at him , though might help if asked nicely enough, while still laughing mercilessly.)

 No.72194

>>72185

It's pants m8. The embodiment of a sloppy, uninspired runaround that has no reason to exist. Everything in it is either wasted potential or a waste of time.

An embarrassingly awkward side character death early on sets the tone, and of course gets mined for some groanworthy angst and redundant "Doctor you really are a shit!"-posturing later. We endure entire scenes with another unfunny Tivolian who is there for NO reason other than Whithouse wanting to re-shill his alien concept that was amusing in one episode 4 years prior. At one point the Doctor and pals get shunted like 5 minutes back into the past just to pad out the plot. The potentially intriguing question of how a ghost of the Doctor could come to exist resolves with "it was another hologram made by the sonic", which is certainly set up in advance by the narrative but so desperately disappointing that it scarcely matters (among the lessons Whithouse failed to learn from Moffat's tenure is that it was le fake is an unsatisfying way to answer that kind of question). And the potentially cool antagonist somehow ends up looking like shit due to being shot in broad daylight for most of its screentime. It chucks in some interesting details like a deaf character but everything else is so half-arsed.

But I will credit it with this - despite being under the incorrect impression that the entire resolution having been a bootstrap paradox is a fresh and interesting move, Whithouse at least believes his bubble wrap and has the decorum to frame the episode with that idea, as well as constructing a decently-shaped paradox that encompasses enough of the story to feel necessary. Unlike the absolute state of Arrival's climax which utterly sells out and reduces anything profound about its treatment of determinism/fixed time/free will by wheeling out an instantaneous, cheap-as-peanuts mini-bootstrap just because it's a Hollywood movie and there needs to be a high-stakes bit where China nearly nukes everything and the heroes stop them. Fuck off. It's not a bad film but that scene was pure ass, although I'm sure non-Doctor-Who-watching brainlets thought it was mind-blowing.

First off, want to commend Miller for this. I know he was working hard on it, and it shows.

Now, I want to say that this story was hilarious. The ending is hinted by the way 12 is described by the rest of the story. Miller never outright says "Capaldi is emotionally totured by having to be radical" until the end, but it's already implied by the prose throughout. And the ending is hilarious, as it's like the story itself just gives up under the ridiculousness of the premise. Had this been executed badly, it would seem lazy, but Miller pulled it off well enough that it just seems funny. It helps that the actual sci fi story has some fun descriptions, so you're actually engaged throughout.

 No.72339

Okay, so it's pretty evident /who/ is shit now and almost every anon agrees. But I've found a solution. There are a few steps as to how we actually salvage this shithole.

>Rename /who/ to /dwg/ - Doctor Who General

It's clear to see that the /who/ name is now permanently associated with shitposting and memes. Bringing a new identity will stop this. I'm not saying get rid of the memes entirely, but perhaps make new memes more related to discussion topics.

>Stop all "meme" thread headers.

Instead, I suggest we focus them on discussion, posing them with a question or a talking point. Maybe we could have episode editions right from An Unearthly Child up until today. In addition, we could append this to thread headers to get newbies to follow our new etiquette.

>Make threads focused on Doctor Who.

/who/ should be about Doctor Who (/dwg/ moreso, another reason to change the name), and it should not be a personal blog for discussing your life, nor should it be a place to discuss Star Wars. There are many, many other places to talk about those things - the countless Star Wars threads on /tv/, and /soc/ for socializing.

>Remove all the trips.

Even if a few people filter the trips, there will still be a majority of people who see their posts and discuss them, making them a net loss for /dwg/. The best way would be to make them so uncomfortable that they have to leave. Yes, it might f*ck up a few threads in the process but it will be worth it in the long run to have a drama-free environment.

>Close down the stream.

All the stream does for this place is bring even more identity drama. I don't think you can make streams anonymous, so the best way to stop it would be to remove the association or the stream itself.

>Stop posting links to the wiki.

The wiki is another one of those things which is so closely associated with the /who/ identity that it's nothing but drama. Just remove the 4chan association and make it a separate thing that all the tripfags and memers can go to.

As an inflation fetishist, I have a great fascination with the cartoonish-ballooning of people. I am not the best writer and I am by no means a psychologist, but I have come to the conclusion that not everyone knows about inflation fetishism (IF). I wish to expound my thoughts, feelings and wish to give a general understanding of IF to the best of my ability.

The first question one would ask is “What is IF?”. The most basic explanation is that inflation fetishism is the fascination or sexual fascination of a person’s body parts expanding larger than human body proportions should allow. This explanation is quite broad and there are many niche groups that differ greatly. There are groups that like different inflated body parts, genders, animals vs people, inanimate objects and even what happens afterwards (bursting, infinite inflation”, etc.). Going back to the initial definition that I have given, IF is an affinity based on a transformation. Some people like to focus on the transformation process itself, the cause and effect, or a mixture of both. It all boils down to what types of inflation one prefers to another.I will dive into the most broad and popular inflation types and then go from there.

Before I go deep into the types, however, I would like to wind back and look at how one may acquire an inflation fetish and how it can become part of someone’s sexual drive. From my personal experience, it comes down to what kind of media one is subjected to when one is in their developmental stages. When I was about 6-8 years old, I watched many films and cartoons. One of my favorite films at that time was the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. In this film, there is a character by the name of Violet who eats unstable gum that causes her to swell into the shape of a blueberry. Since this is one of the first women that I was exposed to in film, in my age range, with any lasting memory, I was somewhat attracted to her. What happened to her also frightened me in a way and left a clear mental image of a girl’s body expanding outwards in all directions. As a child, I was also exposed to an abundance of cartoons. A common gag used for laughs in cartoons is a character swelling up or expanding when attached to a hose or air pump. The constant bombardment of these stimuli turned into a sexual fetish when I started to hit puberty. This is the case with many people I have communicated with online, and what movies and shows they have watched as children have greatly impacted the style of inflation that they find personally attractive today.

Mentally, what makes this fetish appealing? Well, there are two key positions in inflation media. There is the inflator, the person who is inflating someone, and the inflatee, the person being inflated. People who see themselves as an inflatee like the idea of their body expanding outwards. The idea of pressure building up inside them as their body pushes out in all directions is a turn on for the inflatee. An inflator, on the other hand, finds joy in inflating someone to either constrict them with their own body, feel them expand, or to have sex with an inflated person.

One of the most popular types of inflation is breast expansion. Many people who aren't into IF can still be sexually aroused to cartoonishly large breasts. It is one of the most sexualized body parts of the female anatomy to the point where people want larger breasts in reality (breast implants). Butt expansion falls under the same category with minor variations.

Belly inflation is also on the top of the inflation list. This one harbors back to cartoon inflations, where a character generally expands outwards from the center of their being.

To quickly sum up many other inflation types, if there is a body part or an object in existence, it expanding larger and rounder could be conceived as sexually arousing. A large amount of inflation fetishists are attracted to more types of inflation than just one. I, personally, am sexually attracted to large bellies, butts, and breasts. All three of theses factors combined at the same time cause an immense arousal that a regular nude picture of a woman would not supply. Some people might prefer a large butt, a mildly distended belly, and small breasts. The combinations are endless, making a finite analysis of IF nearly impossible.

Still staying in the realm of inflation types, one must also address how large a subject gets and what causes the subject to get larger. The most common methods of inflating a person are either with water or air. A new trend that is going around the community is slime inflation, in which a goo-monster forces itself into someone. Another popular inflation method among sexual fans is cum inflation. This is when a character cums so much into another character, that the cum starts filling up that character like a balloon. How big a character gets is also a point of arousal. This range can go from a character becoming as large a pregnant woman, or the size of the universe. I, personally, like it when a character becomes the size of a room. There is no limit to how big a character gets unless one is a fan of popping/bursting.

In the inflation community, bursting is somewhat of a taboo. There are two types, one being more acceptable in the community than the other. When a character reached their bursting point, they could pop and be cartoonishly fine. This is the more accepted version of popping. The more radical lust for popping is when the character explodes and dies gorily. Many people shun that version because they do not want death to be a part of their sexual fantasies. I prefer the latter because it establishes a limit to where dramatic tension can be build. Bursting, however can be a metaphorical climax to the inflation experience. Inflation could be the swelling escalation of sexual intercourse, and popping could, in the mind of an inflation fetishist, be ejaculation.

I hope that this short paper was able to explain a little about the massively broad inflation fetish. As stated, there are so many variants of the inflation fetish that is it near impossible to touch on all the subjects at once. This is just my two cents on the subject.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

The History Eater was a creature the War Doctor fought during the Time War.

Rassilon sent the Doctor and four versions of Asmuth to Estragil, to discover what was causing time distortions. On their way, they fought several Daleks, but Asmuth was hit, and died. The Doctor went on alone, trying to find the source of the distortions. Then, the Doctor found the History Eater, who swallowed an entire fleet of Daleks on his own.

The General arrived, and ordered his army to shoot the History Eater. The Doctor, however, said that he shouldn't do it, because not even the Daleks had a chance against him. The Doctor, the General and his army headed back to the Capitol.

/who/ is slowly moving towards embracing Series 1 while rejecting S2-4 as a failure to live up to it. Which makes a certain sense. There are some great stories under Tennant, and obviously his run is what kept NuWho alive, but it still feels like a significant downgrade as an overall take on Doctor Who. Even though you could make a good case that it's better than Davison and Colin's TV runs, the latter two still somehow feel like they have more of a right to be preserved for their unique elements.

I think the consensus still leant towards S1 back then, for practical reasons like "skipping most of NuWho is fucking weird, just watch it in order". But I think the fact anyone was even bringing the question up back then is telling enough of the difference in attitudes towards S1; that conversation would be unthinkable in 2018. I think at the time there was a stigma around Rose specifically as an episode, its 'kiddy' aspects, I occasionally saw it opined that "S1 is okay but Rose is a bad introductory episode" and other such things. Even that feels weird now because Rose is clearly a good episode.

It might have been because Moffat was trying to capture a more American-friendly and "serious" aesthetic during S6 that a sense of insecurity was generated in this area of the fanbase, a concern that potential new audience members (especially people wandering into the Who threads on /tv/ to ask how to get into the show) would watch S1 and immediately be turned away by RTD's style. No-one cares about that shit these days.
