There certainly are faults to Series 1, but when watched as a whole, I feel that these faults are minor and inconsequential compared to the positives that Series 1 can bring. While the wheelie-bin coming to life is a bit odd, the issue of the Slitheen farting is almost a genuine deal breaker; the Slitheen are quite an interesting idea in their own right, but there must have been a better way to incorporate the farting idea – something like the individual becoming faint and being on the verge of passing out, which would then require them to be revitalised or de-suited.

In relation to the space pig, I’ve never really found it to be something that’s silly or unsuitable. If it had been left alone and treated as a small and silly little B-Plot, I would have a big problem with it. Instead of it being treated as a joke, it’s built upon to a dramatic and moral level when the Doctor states that “someone's taken a pig, opened up its brain, stuck bits on, then they've strapped it in that ship and made it dive bomb. It must've been terrified. They've taken this animal and turned it into a joke.” This goes on to properly open up the moral levels that are present inside the minds of the Slitheen and show to the audience what their thought process aligns to. Instead of just being a standard “Villain of the Week”, the Slitheen are shown to have virtually no contempt for the sanctity of life, no morals and no scruples. While the Slitheen are relegated to the realms of political satire, they still remain one of the more invasive antagonists in the entirety of Who through their (thankfully off-screen and heavily implied) mutilation of their intended victims. A question I’ve always wondered about the Slitheen is where they hide the interior matter of their victims once they’ve been skinned. Personally, I’ve always been of the opinion that they actually eat what’s left of the humans once they’ve been de-skinned, but the room in which one of the Generals is killed in is completely immaculate almost immediately afterwards. Skinning, eating and cleaning the insides of a human would surely create a lot of mess, but no one ever comments on how clean the room is. They also never mention if they find the offal/insides hidden anywhere, so I’m not really sure.

Much the same as the Space Pig discussion, I don’t think that shitting on Series 1 having sub-par CGI animation for certain shots is a hill that people should really defend. Coming from a series that prides itself on having monsters with sink plungers, monsters comprised of bubble-wrap and monsters made of literal fucking floating tin-foil, complaining that the CGI looks a bit dire in a few shots is really very silly. Sure, it’s not entirely fresh. Imagine if Doctor Who had come back in 2000 instead of 2005: the CGI would have been utterly fragile compared to how semi-decent it looks in 2005.

Cum-lens is unforgivable, don’t get me wrong. I recently watched Series 1 to 6 on a large TV and only really noticed cum-lens in some of the earlier stories of Series 1. I’m not saying they weren’t present in every episode, but I only really noticed it in eps 1 to 5. In my opinion, cum-lens is much more frequent in Series 2, almost distressingly so.

In my opinion also, parts of Series 1 could have been easily stripped out from classic Who, especially The Unquiet Dead, Dalek and The Long Game if they were stripped of their post-Time War mythos. The Unquiet Dead could very well have existed in the earlier half of Pertwee’s run or Tom Baker’s gothic period, where The Long Game could have existed in Pertwee’s later run somewhere between The Time Monster and the Green Death. Either that placing, or somewhere in McCoy’s first or second season. Dalek, on the other hand, could have been placed in Davison’s later era and no one would have blinked an eye, especially with the on-screen death count.

The soap drama element, in my opinion, allows for a more family-orientated relationship for Rose. Whether or not that’s a good thing is up in the air and would be answered differently depending on who you ask. Personally, I don’t really mind it. The relationship between The Doctor, Rose, Mickey and Jackie, to an extent, helps humanise Rose in a way which Classic Who (mainly for timing reasons) wouldn’t have been able to do. Even Mickey comes out on top in the end when the Doctor/Rose/Jack dynamic becomes apparent to him.

I do agree with the “skipping most of NuWho is weird, just watch it in order” crowd, but I also agree somewhat with the stigma surrounding “Rose” as an episode. There are points in Rose where it does get a bit too silly, but like I said earlier the bad bits are easily outweighed by the good bits, so it gets balanced out in the end.

I have a genuine love for Series 1 of New Who – it may have been the first run of episodes that I saw live, but it certainly wasn’t the first that I had seen. Luckily for me, I had something to compare “Rose” to “Parting of the Ways” to, as a parent had a lot of VHS tapes of Who that they had from when they were kids. I was lucky enough to watch The Daleks, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, The Seeds of Death, Spearhead from Space, Day of the Daleks, Death to the Daleks, Genesis of the Daleks, Pyramids of Mars, Terror of the Zygons, Planet of Evil, Dragonfire and Curse of Fenric to at least base some idea of what the show actually was.

Parting of the Ways > Father’s Day > Dalek > The Empty Child > The Doctor Dances > Bad Wolf > Boom Town > The Unquiet Dead > Rose > World War Three > Aliens of London > The End of The World

Im not the person you responded to, but to be honest, it did what it needed to do, which is to make the daleks appear frightening, to an audience that largely saw the daleks as shitty looking 2-dimensional B-movie monsters. It succeeded brilliantly. And yeah, it's basically just a base under siege, and the acting is atrocious from everyone that isn't Eccleston or Piper…. But it succeeded so well in what it needed to do, and really set up the Doctor's emotional aftermath from the Time war, specifically in the scene where 9 is alone with the dalek. It's admittedly overrated, but not by a huge margin imho

Series 1 is a really good example of "more than the sum of it's parts". Probably the best example in Doctor Who. It's really Russell T Davies' statement on what Doctor Who is, or should be. When he wrote it he didn't know he was getting another season, so he really put his whole vision into it I think.

Series 5 is my other favourite season, and perhaps it's really just that the showrunner will have a more cohesive vision for their first season.

Which leaves me with a thought - However good (or bad) Series 11 may be, it could be downhill from there…

I think End of the World is trying to be quite a few things at once and none of those things are entirely nailed down in a thought through way. Some stories can mix a plot so it's scary/funny, thriller/horror, drama/thriller, but I'm not entirely sure what EoTW wants to be. Sometimes it's a comedy, sometimes it's action-based and sometimes it's an almost who-dunit. I'm in favor of their being two tonal qualities to something but once it tries to be three things at once without properly alternating it can become quite muddled. Another thing to note is that I don't think the plot's very interesting, but that's a personal issue more than a general overbearing issue.

Also, maybe paradoxically so, I think that it should have been moved back an episode or two, but EoTW is best served by being second in the runnings.

 No.72546

>>72542

I think there is a chance Chibnall will buck the trend and his first season might be the less ambitious, vision-driven one.

RTD had to bring back the show in a new form and make it as good as it could be. Moffat had to prove that the show could thrive without RTD and Tennant.

Unlike RTD's, Moffat's era has seriously petered out in terms of popularity and the casuals are pining for the show to go back to something easy and familiar. Chibnall isn't under pressure to "beat Moffat" but to please as many people as possible, which a bold new vision that encapsulates his entire perspective as a Doctor Who fan probably won't be suitable for.

The 12th doctor sonic toy was actually high quality, it was basically a 100% accurate prop replica without any visible screwholes or legal print anywhere on the body. The only real difference was that the switch had a spring to return to the off position when you released it, rather than holding itself on like the prop does.

The 11th doctor sonic was competent, they made it more toy-friendly by changing the placement of the button (plus making it a designed button instead of the raw microswitch) and making the neck spring loaded instead of something that had to be manually raised or flicked like the actual prop

The 9/10 sonic took some more liberties, on the actual prop I believe the button is part of the slider but the toy puts button holes on the ends of the blue line. The proportions are different and they made the bottom nib a replaceable pen/invisible ink thing because toy.

The 13th is a major step down in build quality, like it was rushed out and/or they didn't have thorough references to go off of. We don't have any clear pictures of the actual prop used in the show so we can't tell how accurate it is, but there are some huge inconsistencies between the design of the character options sonic and the seven20 sonic so something's definitely up.

moff also claimed that S10 would be a new start, it's naive to assume that chibbers who will be completely devoid of any references to the past simply because of how he's marketing the series. It's definitely the kind of will-he-won't-he thing that deserves to go on a bingo.

S11 will have its own recurring characters (companion or otherwise)

>>72639

Older bingos used to be full of heavily subjective things like "x is used well", "x's episode is GOAT" which are too debatable and subjective, it's much better to have "thing happens" since it's objective and quantifiable. "Embarrassingly bad CGI" is borderline in that regard, but it's more universally agreed on than opinions on plot.

It takes effort to come up with predictions that are both possible and funny, most of the time predictions anons come up with are just predictions

>preliminary ideas

reminders about Chibber's taste:

On writing:

<I'm really interested in people, and writing (I think) helps me make sense of people.

<I just really like finding out what happens next in the story.

<The definition of a good story is being told things that you don’t know yet.

On 42's time limit:

<I like it for that; I think it’s exciting for that. I like the real-time-ness of it, I think if you took that away it would have been a much thinner episode because I think it’s me trying to learn. And I think episodes need headlines. I know as a fan you don’t need those, but actually, in the Radio Times: Episode Seven of Series Three? “Oh look, it’s ‘real-time’; we haven’t seen that episode.”

<42's not a brilliant script.

<With the Earth invasion stories you’ve got to be very careful about your scale. The thing I learned from Torchwood is, how you do that and how you contain threats and how you spread them; what choices you make is a very key decision that looks easy and is a very difficult thing to get.

<The Beast Below is probably one of Steven’s best ever scripts, and the production of it was so not what was in the script.

<Cyberwoman was [RTD's] idea…

On hearing of the episode's reception:

<But the funny thing is, in the Torchwood magazine, they did a poll and it was in the top five! That’s why you can’t listen to anything.

On ye olden days:

<My first memory is, literally, of Doctor Who, of The Sea Devils, and I checked back – and I can't have been more than two, or three at most, when that was on. How can I possibly remember them, coming out of the sea?

<I always followed it, bought the Doctor Who Weekly comic [which eventually mutated into DWM!]

<When it was taken off-air in 1985, I was like 'Where do I get my fix from? I was living on Merseyside, and I kind of looked around to see whether there was any fan clubs - I wasn't been a member of anything at that stage. I've no idea, now, where I found out that there was a Local Group, but I did, and started going there, to these Local Group meetings which were kind of extraordinary. It was just forty people sitting in a darkened hotel room watching a really flickery copy of The Celestial Toymaker episode 4. All day! From mid-day to 8 o'clock they would just screen episodes.

<When I went to college in London to do drama, I fell out of all that, and drama and theatre kind of took over.

<At the age of 16 you shouldn't be in a television studio talking about Doctor Who – you should be out getting drunk and getting laid! Thank God for college, that's all I can say…

On New Who:

<I was just blown away by the skilful creation of a new version that kept all the things I loved about the show, about the classic series, with a modern sensibility and an emotional core. It's tricky going back and watching old episodes now, because I think emotionally there's very little there. There's some terrific, amazing stuff in there, but it's a very different beast.

<But what they managed to do on the new show is extrapolate all the good bits, and lose all the bits that – as a fan – you tried to forget about anyway! Russell knew which bits to love, and which bits weren't necessary or useful for a mainstream audience.

<What I thought at the time was, how can this show not have been on air for however long it's been? It felt so right so quickly that by the time you got to something like episode 3, you thought, how has this show ever not been there? And now it's even what you do at Christmas – Christmas Day, 7 o'clock, you watch Doctor Who.

<I think a big thing for me was that I wanted to write for David Tennant. Because he's the best Doctor in the world, for me. He's brilliant, and I couldn't turn down the opportunity to write for him, I think he's magnificent.

<I thought Gareth Roberts said something quite interesting, which is that even when Tom Baker was as his height, it wasn't the huge popular cultural success that it is now. It was a great show that everybody loved, but now it has an impact beyond being a TV show. It's like everybody adores it, everybody loves David Tennant, the toys are selling millions, there are two spin-off shows… it had something like five Radio Times covers last year.

<You talk about what it was like in 1986 – actually you were watching a show that really had no place in public affection whatsoever, it was regarded with derision. Whatever your opinions of that season, and I think there were great things about that season, don't get me wrong – I love every season of Doctor Who! – but you could not admit to being a Doctor Who fan in 1986.

<And I can watch it with my wife now. I can watch Doctor Who with a girl! Hooray!

On obliterating Pip'n'Jane live on air:

<Oh blimey, on TV that came across much more viciously and vituperatively than it felt in the studio.

vituperative: uttering or given to censure; containing or characterized by verbal abuse

<And also Pip and Jane reacted badly to it, it hit them. But my memory is that I was struggling for words, and things came out that I thought in retrospect weren't the most polite words.

<I wish I was as elegant a fan as Paul Cornell, where all that would come back and haunt you is a string of beautifully written fanzine articles.

<And I'm sure there will be plenty of sixteen year olds foaming at the mouth at my episode. But that's part of the circle of life isn't it?

the original leaked picture of the sonic appears to take place in the same scene shown in the trailer where it looks like jodie is using a bunch of tools, so the common interpretation is that the doctor is trapped in a room and has to build a sonic to get out, or something like that.

I still don't know how I feel about this. I understand why it's done, it streamlines the whole "reveal" thing, since for both instances it was like the cherry on the cake with the new TARDIS interior design, but it raises narrative questions. Where did those sonic designs come from? Did the TARDIS make them from scratch or were there blueprints the Doctor had been working on that it used?

Even in the classic series I don't recall it ever actually being shown where they come from, the Doctor sort of just has them all of a sudden.

part of the point of broadchurch S1 was calling out the absurdity of age of consent laws.

Bradley walsh, beth/mark and chloe all had underaged sex but only bradley was convicted for it and since people misinterpreted his conviction and destroyed his life he ended up killing himself. Chibnall shows underaged sex in a positive light

so the most radical thing chibs could do would be put jodie in a relationship with a young human, point out the age gap and present it in a positive light

First time on Reddit. Looking to get some advice/input on how to proceed with my relationship.

I met my wife 4 years ago. We are both mid 30s. We both shared the same far-left regressive politics when we first met. It started as a casual fling but she got pregnant really quickly. We now have a three year old and a one year old.

We have a great relationship aside from the fact that we cannot discuss politics or any social issues.

Since we’ve been together, I have become a huge fan of JBP, Sam Harris, etc. and my views now run counter to hers on nearly every issue. She regularly talks about white privilege, BLM, and not doing enough to advice SJW causes. She loves Shaun King and doesn’t see any issue with PC culture (thinks it’s great!) She’s even bragged about following a FB page run by a woman that “fuuuucking hates white people.”

I’ve tried to engage in more civil discussions on these issues, but she has frankly stated that she is an ideologue and that these views are “her identity.” There is no moving her, even a little. She refuses to even listen to a counter argument, or to even entertain the idea that there are other arguments.

During the last discussion we had about all of this, she said that is OK with being racist, as long as it’s directed towards whites, even though the children we are raising are white.

My main concern is the children: She’s jokingly talked about enrolling my son in a drag queen classes [edit: This was a flippant comment she made. She’s not searching for actual drag classes. Nor would I let her do this if they did exist. She honestly does not see anything wrong with the mere idea, which is the problem].I am concerned that any feminine trait he may exhibit once he grows up will be pounced on and exploited by her ideology, and that he will suffer for it.

I am considering a divorce, but this is not a road I want to go down. We get along great as long as these subjects are not breeched. I am concerned that I have less room within the relationship to combat any impending gender/political craziness if I stay within the relationship, because I have to maintain a peace. If I leave there is more freedom, but the children will suffer greatly.

There are dragons under the rug that are growing. I need some help here

I have a pretty good test for finding “the one”. I’m a huge fan of Ben Shapiro. At the end of a date with a new girl I usually bring them home back to my place and I play a YouTube clip of Ben Shapiro owning college freshmen. If she doesn’t like it I end the date right there. You can’t share a bed with me if you can’t share it with Mr Shapiro.

First there is a reference. What you suggest is interesting (and I would tend to agree with you) but it is original research until proved proven otherwise. Second, even if the Steensen means the son of Steen, it does not imply that Stenonius was deliberately chosen by Nicolas after latinizing his father's first name Steensen to Steno (and not Stenus, Stensius, Stensionus, …feel free to fill in the dots) and taking the genitive to become Stenoni(u)s. Third, the English-speaking scholars decided to call him Steno because they follow the same path you just did: thinking it was a genitive. But where they right to put this intension in Nicolaus' mind? Wath about Nicolas? Why Nicolas and not Nilo, Nilso, Nilsius,…???

>The 10-part series will feature an equal female / male director split, according to Chibnall, while all of series 11’s editors, bar one, are also female.

>*It was a big priority for us,” Strevens said, with Chibnall adding that Doctor Who is also working with a trainee scheme in Cardiff offering opportunities to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

>“We’re doing lots, but our plan across time is to do lots more. It should be the most inclusive show on television. The whole concept of Doctor Who is that anybody can go anywhere and do anything, and we want to reflect that on-screen and off.”

>The 10-part series

Calling it "10-part" instead of "10 episodes" is interesting, but probably just an example of a journalist not knowing what they're talking about.

It's also telling that they emphasis the female hires when it comes to directors and editors, but mention nothing about writers. Having female writers is arguably the most important thing with introducing the first female Doctor.

>Doctor Who is also working with a trainee scheme in Cardiff offering opportunities to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds

Based. Anything that gives inexperienced people a way into the industry is great. It's what BF should make a priority imo, actual proper open submissions instead of their annual "write for a line that nobody cares about" competition.

I don't think his assessment of Chibnall as a mediocre writer is off the mark, but it's very bold of him to assume that will be enough to cause people to turn against a female Doctor. What would ruin the chance for future female Doctors is if the writers turned her gender into the punchline of jokes and basically struggled to treat her as the same character, but from the comments I've seen from Chibnall so far he seems aware enough not to fall into that trap.

I no longer look up to Lawrence like how I used to, but I'd still love it if he started blogging about the show again with S11. I hope he at least gives the first episode a go, he didn't give up on Moffat right away.

Like I said, bitterness and a desire for validition.

Loz seems to think that if the scripts are shit, people will stop watching, but really it probably won't make that much difference whether they're good or not. I don't think the RTD-era success is repeatable, at least not yet, and not in any way that strongly resembles what RTD did.

I'm not worried that Chibbers will kill the show, I'm worried that we'll get a dull five-or-so years.

no moffat series is about investigating a mystery. There are mysteries in moffat serieses, but the premise of episodes is never to investigate it. Instead, any revelations are just happened upon or otherwise revealed without it being the point of the episode.

one of the things I liked best about the moffat era is how nearly every episode was designed to stand alone, even if it was a multi-parter

this format would likely defeat the purpose of the variety of locations they travel to by forcing them to be interconnected in some way

it could very well turn out to be incredibly tedious

Actually the last story submitted.

Good funny yarn, with a meaty bit of meta towards the end.

That premise was enough to pique anyone’s interest. I imagine Merlin Doc kind of like McCoy’s Radagast.

>“Of course, maybe your team was just so unremarkable that you were completely forgotten,” yawned Merlin.

Meaty meta, meta meaty. Missive didn't have any contributions by anyone else contrary to speculation.

>>71900

Good post.

>>72004

Good read.

>>72533

I don't even think S1 needs as much qualification as this; certain ways people judge Rose reflect more on them than the episode, imo.

>>73012

Excellent idea; could be an interesting refining of a lot of ideas he approached in Tennant and Smith era. I assume this is coming before Dracula, as Gatiss and Moff have both said that's a few years down the line, and the point of HBO greenlighting all this new content is to get more stuff out ASAP to compete with content-heavy services. Very pleased with this news, very pleased indeed. Feels very earned after Moff kind of lost his chance making it big in the states after committing to Sherlock/Who instead of going ahead with more Tintin.

>>73039

I've discussed it on /who/ but it might've been pre-trip. It's one of the few EDAudios I agree to have enough meat on the bone to be worth discussing, but iirc I had issues with how the moral issues it raises squared with 8's characterisation.

>>73127

Immeasurably. I am a massive fan of the novel; it was a formative work in my life. I am a massive fan of Peter Harness. I am massively sceptical of every WOTW adaption that alters the time period, as the context is so fundamentally important to the story's themes. I am extremely hype.

>>73166

Moffat is always a fun figure to make up stories about.

Reminds me of the old Rusty and Moff comics.

Had fun coming up with the logline for that one.
