>"The City on the Edge of Forever" has been frequently cited as the best episode of all the Star Trek series and movies.

>Star Trek: The Original Series episode “City on the Edge of Forever” is regarded by many (including a TV Guide poll of the “100 Best TV Episodes of All Time”) as the greatest Star Trek episode of all time.

>It is unquestionably the best of the 79 episodes produced. It was also the only episode of the Original Series to win an award (a Hugo in 1968 for Best Dramatic Presentation).

>Roddenberry ranked it as one of his ten favorite episodes. In the final interview before he died, he said it was his favorite outright.

>On the night, Roddenberry and several of the crew were seated at a table which Desilu had purchased, while Ellison was at another. When he won, the Star Trek party rose to their feet and applauded, since they believed it would bring credibility to the series. Herbert Franklin Solow later recalled that this elation turned to horror when Ellison began talking about the interference of studio executives in the writing process, before holding aloft a copy of the original script and yelling "Remember, never let them rewrite you!" Ellison walked past the Desilu table as he left the podium, and shook the copy of the script at Roddenberry and his party.

>On a planet already broken and divided, an unlikely band of friends are forced apart as a devastating time war rips their world asunder and threatens to destroy all of time and space.

>In the struggle for peace, their lives will never be the same again.

>But can Savalia, a poet turned soldier; Mordicai, a school drop-out turned engineer; Kendo, an idealist turned senator; and Tor Fasa, a respected academic turned war criminal, reunite to save the universe from total destruction?

>This is the story of how they fought the war and how the war fought them.

>To be clear, we have Victorian time travelers selling brand new antiques in 1966 and luring the Doctor into a trap so that he can be transported back to 1866 as part of a plot by the Daleks. In 2011, this sounds very much like Doctor Who. But other than The Chase and The Daleks' Master Plan we've never even had a story that jumped between two timeframes, and there it was a matter of the TARDIS and a Dalek craft traveling in parallel. The idea of events in 1866 affecting those in 1966 directly, and of the Doctor traveling through time via something other than the TARDIS is wholly new.

How can one Whitaker be so based

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

 No.74413

>But more to the point, it's very obvious that Whitaker is writing the same Doctor he was writing in Power of the Daleks. Which is only a problem when you consider that the character has developed considerably since then. So the characterization is continually… off. This too isn't a crushing problem, because Troughton plays it well and the characterization Whitaker picks is a fascinating midpoint between Troughton and Hartnell that has the happy accident of coming off very close to, say, Sylvester McCoy or David Tennant. In particular, the scene where the Doctor bluntly informs his companions that he will let them die if it means stopping the Daleks is a tour de force that takes the sting out of every stupid scene where the Cybermen get the Doctor to back down by threatening his companion and then chortle about how his emotions make him weak. As is the case with bewildering frequency for Whitaker, he is astonishingly capable of screwing up in ways that end up being way ahead of their time.

Brix calibrations are different in syrups/c02 water. There's usually slightly less syrup/mix in a fountain soda and you're right the carbonation is a different for the end result. The soda is "bruised" in the mixing process adding the ambient air. The water lines are also usually chilled and the amount of ice and shape of the ice will change the flavor profiles. The straw also adds more air making it easier for you to taste said flavor. You can see the difference in color as well. Like Coke from a fountain is much lighter than the inky black liquid from a bottle.

Considering how we separated from the empire in a complete voluntary and peaceful manner, Australians don't have this motive to act like nothing existed pre 1901 (wheras americans dont care about their history as colonies nearly as much as post 1776)

Because of this Australian identity had a base point of carrying over basically all of British culture and expanding on it over the years to the point where it had become distinct (but ultimately still derivative)

Another important factor is that we also have a much smaller population (as opposed to america being huge and varied in it's own state culture), meaning those changes from British culture, although not as drastic as the Americans, resonate more with us and keep us more content with both our current culture and it's origins.

Same thing applies to Canada too.

I am agreeing with you, just saying I wish it went further. Why does the USA try to align itself so much with heritages of other countries for legitimacy when we, as you say, are at least ideally more interest in diverging ourselves though? Why the difference in national mindset? It's intriguing.

Well you're still a part of the commonweath I'd guess. There's more of a connection to the old world I'd guess. Americans violently rejected the crown and it's a "defining moment" that's harped on ad infinitum. It's part of the same identity that has us fascinated with guns. Also when people emigrated to america they tended to stay in cultural ghettos and still hold onto that identity even after moving west.

Another thing, Americans claim other nationalities as their own because they want to PROVE they have some link to the past and a deeper culture, wheras most of the world (and the countries themselves) already acknowledges the link young commonwealth countries have to the old world and it's culture, we don't have any drive to prove we have an older culture because everyone already knows our culture is deeply linked with ancient british culture (especially through things like the common legal system, magna carta and near identical symbolism across most commonwealth countries)

america literally wants to be a monarchy so bad despite all muh 1776 talk that's why they treat the President as god and uncle sam as unifying apolitical force. From my understanding the president was intended to be a dude who just signed bills and made the country feel good, hopefully President Trump will make people stop caring about the presidency so much.

 No.74509

I agree

plus, it's important to consider the wording of the 2nd amendment

>the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed

it speaks of the right to bear arms as something inherent in existence - It's not saying "you have the right to bear arms", it's stating that your inherent right to bear arms must not be infringed. That's the culture they live in. So any attempt to somehow limit access to weaponry is interpreted as an attack on one of their fundamental rights as a human.

>>74508

Yeah even the choice of the title "president" clearly signifies it was meant to be about presiding rather than ruling, it's funny how the title eventually just became to basically mean ruler style figure anyway. Possibly the one positive thing I can say about Shorten's leadership is that it's driving the ALP away from American style "vote for the personality, not the politics" stuff they got a bit too into with Kevin imo.

I get a little bit verged when misidentified as American here just cause I'm white, in kind of a reverse scenario I guess.

>>74509

Great point. You can lobby all the logic against it as we like, but it's just so soaked into the country and the culture I don't see how it can be peacefully altered. As long as something recognisable as the USA exists I think that same culture with guns will exist.

>>74512

To a degree, the MSM expends enormous amounts of effort to make those sort of brand messages to get people to think those sorts of ways anyway. I can see it back home where people vote nats just because we're country types, even though the nats have done absolutely shit all for us.

Ireland isnt as important as the likes of India on the world stage, so Im never going to expect an indian to know about my little island. I dont know much about Indian geography too, I probably should but like, one of my best friends is from Mumbai, and Im not even 100% sure where that is on a map of India. Mumbai is magnitudes bigger than my home city, so it's really a failing on my part.

A lot of countries won't give a fuck about your degree, let alone major, as long as you have one. Others will prefer anything language/communication tangent, like mine. Still others will insist on an actual teaching degree. For most places being a native English speaker from USA/UK/Ireland/Australia/Canada with any 3 or 4 year degree is enough. Depending on the country your race and gender can also be a factor.

With younger kids I do a lot of pronunciation and phonics stuff but with the teenagers it's more debate and writing skills. Conversational stuff with everyone. I teach alone but yeah in some countries and jobs you have a native co-teacher. Knowing the native language is more for your day-to-day convenience, as most places insist on full immersion teaching.

Since the place where I was was pretty close to a voting area I did it on the way home and I had more than enough time before the voting was ceased at 10pm. If I remember correctly, voting booths were open from 8am to 8pm - it doesn't exactly take long to vote, either. 5 minutes at the most, depending on the crowd size. Then again I don't live in a large city, so I'm sure it'd be harder for the more cosmopolitan types.

Would asking what your degree is in be too invasive? It's also possible (for some degrees and countries) to just get hired in your field, but in a different country, it's still a paradigm shift to deal with but worth thinking about. I'd probably try to gun for a job with a coteacher and comparatively lower teaching hours if you wanted to do it purely as a stopgap year, to stave off burnout.

Unironically agree. All of the stuff of Trump and Putin kissing is a free democratic right to protest a form of government, and that's fine. I decided to watch Doctor Who with my mom, as she was curious what it was about and knew I like it. It was ok. She loved the Ninth Doctor and even liked episodes like World War Three. She was hooked. That is, until his regeneration. She said the new actor was awful. Why? Because he was ugly, had weird hair, creepy teeth, silly facial expressions and was being too goofy. He wasnt like her doctor. She complained about David Tennant for like a whole season. She got used to him though. When we had our after episode discussions, she kept going off topic and saying that the actor had cool hair, great white teeth she was jealous of, that she liked how goofy he was, how handsome he was and he was a great actor. It was kind of cringy and ironic that she basically changed her mind about all the things she bashed him for, for no reason. Then another regeneration came. Just the second she saw Matt Smith, she said she hates the actor and refuses to watch the show further. Why? Because he is ugly… She kept crying how much she misses David Tennant because he was sooo handsome and now she will be forced to watch that ugly guy. I kept telling her that appearance doesnt matter and how good he will play matters and that she should watch more episodes to get an opinion. I thought she was just upset, but no. She actually refuses to watch more episodes. Oh, did I mention she never knew of Matt Smith’s existence? She doesnt even know his name, and she keeps insulting him like he killed her dog or spilled her milk. How do I convince her to stop being childish and watch the show? Or I should just give up?
