Maybe Liz shaw had a dream house she wanted to live in, but there were other buyers… until the other buyers were convinced to go elsewhere by a strange little man with an umbrella. Or perhaps Ian and Barbara were worried about the strange gap in thsir employment from their time on the tardis, until an eccentric scottish professor from a university in Bristol gave them impeccable references. Or maybe a woman in a silver raincoat repaired k9 when Sarah Jane was visiting her son Luke, in uni.

I once heard Moff - I think it was in one of the Christel interviews? - describe 9's outfit as the casual, least-showy outfit Dr. Who has ever worn, and that once we get to 10 he's wearing a typical Doctorish outfit again. Pinstripe might be dated and the tightness might not have been 'in' at the time but other than the coat, there was nothing particularly Doctory about it. I guess the biggest argument is the Converse-suit combination, but even that's a stretch imo

hot take: the doctor holding the master as he dies, begging him to regenerate, while the master refuses to so that the doctor must continue to grieve the loss of gallifrey in order for him to "win", is kino and you'd all agree if it were an idea planned for season 27 or used in the VNAs

oh fair enough, maybe it was me being cynical. I do love to think of what each of the companion's lives were like. RTD did a good job of Jo Grant's life when she appeared in SJA imho. And I like to think The Doctor felt a lot of guilt after the S4 finale and made sure to give Donna Noble opportunities for her bedt possible life and experiences. Subtle suggestions that she should travel maybe….? it seemed to be a dream of hers at one point to travel the globe.

Another little headcanon i have is that most companions have met the curator, but very few of them know it's him. They just remember meeting this very nice if eccentric old man, with an air of familiarity around him. Maybe he's had tea with all of them.

oh thats true about the novel. You know i used to like the idea that the curator spends all his time reminiscing about past adventures, but now i like the idea that he doesnt. he meets all his old friends, but he doesnt talk about the past with them. he asks about their present. he talks to Leela about her new life on a planet she doesnt know that well, he talks to the author Amelia Williams about her latest novel, he helps Rose Tyler with her math homework… again.

I like the idea that the curator just takes interest in their lives. He doesnt care about the scifi adventures so much any more. He just wants to know how Tegan's retirement is going, how Martha and Mickey's marraige is. Genuinely interested in their lives outside of himself beyond what we see on the show.

Hi everyone. Been a bit of a lurker of late but today I saw Chris Chibnell live on stage at CBBC Live in Liverpool today and thought I'd share. He was interviewed about the new series and a bit about his thoughts on becoming showrunner. No new footage was shown, just the MOTD trailer. The main points I took from it were that the show will be in a way rebooted. The show is trying to be for "everyone" and new viewers seem to be a priority with him encouraging folk to get friends and family to watch. It was put to the crowd as to "Who will give it a go?" Viewers will watch the series and not need any prior knowledge of Dr Who as all will be explained. As for the current mythology he didn't consider anything as sacred and said there would be little to no mythology of The Doctor in the new series or returning monsters/enemies. He said there would be 10 stand alone episodes, would not give a date (although he stumbled and I felt he nearly gave it) for the start but said Autumn and very much stressed that it will be Fun. He was complementary about the actors and said two of the new companions Jaz being one would accidentally fall into The Doctor's life and then made reference to The Doctor falling towards Earth from the Tardis. The show will cover all aspects of Time Travel, so there may be a historical ( I am reading between the lines on that). He said there was a huge list drawn up for casting the Doctor and said that it was all women. Secrecy was a big deal. He wanted everyone to see and enjoy what happens when it is broadcast, hence the threadbare trailers. He doesn't appear to want to even hint at anything. That's what I got from it. The young mostly teen crowd weren't particularly his audience and didn't seem very interested or responsive, but the fact they were pushing it to them may suggest the direction they want to go in

Um… not to sound ignorant… why do they keep calling her the13th Doctor and when Capaldi was acknowledged as the 13th Doctor during the Time of the Doctor Episode - at least according to Gallifrey. Regardless if a lot of people don't consider John Hurt's War Doctor as part of the "official" lineup, I however, do. I pretty much consider Jodie's Doctor as the 14th Doctor because Tennant was Ten and Eleven (unofficially) when he aborted a total regeneration at the last minute. Smith was the 12th by dint of total regeneration - and Capaldi is the 13th doctor as the FIRST Doctor from a NEW regeneration cycle gifted to him by Gallifrey. SO to make things more confusing… Jodie is basically Doctor number 2 in the new regeneration cycle - but number 14th in the total lineup. Timey whimey indeed…

<Star Trek: Discovery marked a huge tonal change for the long-running franchise, but it’s only the latest in a series of science fiction revival shows that have taken a darker, more serious tone to reinvent themselves for a new era.

<Discovery executive producer Akiva Goldsman explained that the new version was putting an emphasis on its characters. “If Jim Kirk had to deal with Edith Keeler’s death in ‘City on the Edge of Forever’ as if it were real life, it would take a whole series or a season,” Goldsman said. And that’s not a bad thing; Kirk’s ability to fall in love, create a meaningful relationship, lose his partner, and emotionally reset by the beginning of the next episode always made his connections seem shallow, no matter how hard the writers tried to make them real.

And even if Gallifrey didn't have the equivalent, he's still a time traveller. Despite never before seeing him encounter technology like that onscreen, it's still safe to assume he's visited time-zones and planets (i.e. modern day Earth) where such a commonplace concept exists.

>>75736

That one was actually because the timeline-altering business that happened in the Time War managed to delete soup, as a concept, from existence. It got restored to the universe, and the Doctor's memory, much later.

Many of his extended universe stories are a bit darker than the usual you'd see in the show, and although he's not the only Doctor it works for, Eight's pretty good with that format. Of course, it shouldn't be entirely grimdark, because it wouldn't feel very Doctor Who (or very Eight…) without moments of levity too, but that's a given. It definitely would be nice to have two shows running concurrently, with one being a little more mature on the whole. It'd never happen, of course, but it's a nice thought.

I'm not talking about the 8th Doctor spinoff, I'm talking about the overall approach the people in charge of Trek are taking with the franchise

which seems to be that taking the tropes of the old series and making them shinier and edgier, then claiming that they've making the new version "different" and "challenging" as spin to hide how they have no new ideas and would rather coast along on the existing fanbase's obsession with the lore and continuity instead of actually creating something to stand alongside the material that was memorable enough to make Star Trek a cultural touchstone in the first place.

And this "television is so much better now than it was in the old days because it's serialized now, because everyone knows that time-consuming and complicated equals deep, let's fix all the television from the last century with serialized reboots" attitude just pisses me off. Televison seasons should be like albums, and episodes like songs - separate, but coming from the same place and with the same thematic overtones, not a fucking 73-hour-long movie. There's no plot worth filming that can't be done justice to in 3 hours. Fortunately, series 11 doesn't seem much less episodic than RTD or Moffat years so far.

 No.75984

I'm not talking about anything to do with wokeness, just the actual mental and physical processes. There's a phenomenon where men grip their penis a bit harder than they really should while masturbating, for extra stimulation or whatever ((since nobody really teaches you how tight to hold it, and obviously wanking yourself is much less stimulating than someone else stimulating you so applying more pressure is a way to address that), then they slowly do that more and more over time to compensate for ensuing less sensitivity, eventually this can become something called "death grip" where they'll prove unable to perform in actual sexual encounters because the tightness of an actual vagina won't be enough compared to their hand.

It's a whole exchange, not just one line

WATSON: We're with the NYPD; we'd like a word.

INCEL: About?

SHERLOCK: blackpill4u, a site that you operate on the dark web. It's a meeting place for the incel community.

INCEL: The what community?

SHERLOCK: Incel community, short for involuntary celibacy. No point in denying it, we know people who are good with computers, they were able to uinmask you as the site's administrator and ping your location.

INCEL: It's nothing, okay? It's just a place for people to talk about their problems.

SHERLOCK: Their chief problem being the wrongheaded belief that they've been forced into celibacy by an oppressive conspiracy of sexually unavailable women.

WATSON: We've read the posts on your site. It's pretty nasty.

SHERLOCK: Not surprising, given that taking the blackpill is incel slang for embracing the worst kind of misogynistic nihilism. Here's one - this person claims it should be legal to rape any women that has had sex outside of marriage. Or another one - that says any woman who has an abortion should be forced into government-controlled sex slavery.

INCEL: They're joking, obviously.

SHERLOCK: And how do you explain the one of your members who went on a rampage at their college campus, killing twelve people, mostly women? Or the person who opened fire on a group of female engineers in Montreal?

WATSON: Incel boards like yours have been banned from every major internet hosting service for encouraging violence and hate. That's why you went underground, and moved blackpill4u to the dark web.

SHERLOCK: Obviously, you didn't go dark enough.

WATSON: We have questions for you.

I can't find what I was thinking of specifically. The only articles I can find now are about how when it was announced Sue said that if it was too similar to Sherlock they would take legal action, and Moffat was worried that it would ruin the brand for them if it was bad and criticised it for being too different from the source material - modern-day, set in america, and with a female Watson - before it even came out.

In hindsight, Moffat's concerns are pretty funny because of just how catastrophically off the fucking rails Sherlock got in its later seasons.

>So how do you think I feel about it? Annoyed is in there.

>The bigger problem for us with Elementary is, what if it's terrible? What if it's awful? Then it degrades the brand.

>I remember there was a legitimate American version made of Coupling, actually adapted from our version. It was terrible and it was a disaster and it did sort of diminish the original.

>So if there's this completely unrelated rogue version of Sherlock going around and it's bad, it can be bad for us.

>We don't own Sherlock Holmes. We don't even own the idea of updating it. It's been done before. I hope they know their Sherlock Holmes very, very well indeed because we know what's in our show and wasn't in the original.

>So if we did discover our material had made it into somebody else's show we would have a problem with that. If there is no such incidence of that, then there's nothing we can object to.

At the time, they made great assurances about their integrity, so we have to assume that their modernised Sherlock Holmes doesn't resemble ours in any way, as that would be extremely worrying.

>We are very proud of our show and like any proud parent, will protect the interest and wellbeing of our offspring.

You didn't include the end of the scene. Homeland Security shows up to take the Incel away to Guantanamo Bay because in the Elementary universe, Incels are a recognized domestic terror group.

The show can be wild sometimes (pic related) but that was a stand-out episode. They're there to ask him about an Incel who they suspect kidnapped or murdered a Fin-dom. When they finally catch the Incel, he's on his way to shoot up a women's gym with a trunk full of guns and explosives. It turns out the incel didn't kill the findom, in fact he thought he was going to help her by shooting up the gym because they had raised their prices to the point she couldn't work out there anymore. It turns out the findom was actually kidnapped for reasons completely unrelated to financial domination: She's also an etsy steampunk artist and makes things out of springs and wires, and it turns out her and her blacksmith boyfriend were making ghost guns for a biker gang and they were trying to get out of the arrangement, so the bikers kidnapped them to teach some lackeys how to make guns so they could then kill the couple.

In other words, it's Breaking Bad but for the Etsy Steampunk clique.

It does, but that name has stuck pretty hard and they're commonly referred to as "xenomorphs" in most expanded universe material.

so it's sort of like the slitheen then? writers seem to forget that slitheen is the family name, not the race

when was the word "xenomorph" first used? I've always known it but I've never really questioned its origin before. I remember for sure it being mentioned in aliens, but was it used in the first movie too?

"facehuggers" is another interesting one. because that's used commonly amongst fans too but I can't recall if it's actually used in-universe

"Xenomorph" comes from Aliens, referring to any extra-terrestrial. I recall in Alien 3 Ripley uses the word as if she's talking about that creature specifically.

The slitheen thing I'm willing to let slide because they're supposed to be this big crime family and every time we see them it's the same group. And I feel like it's possible they use "Xenomorph" in the computer terminal scene in Alien.

Due to a tragic mix-up, you now have the power to force any Doctor Who writer to write a novelization of one un-adapted television story. However, due to the same mix-up, it cannot be by the writer of the episode.

For the purposes of this challenge, "Doctor Who writer" can mean any living writer, working or not, who's been paid by the BBC to write for the franchise. So, anyone who wrote an official book or an episode of Torchwood is in, but Nicholas Briggs is strictly prohibited.
