 No.77154

TOS, BF have released a brief description of what next year's season of monthly audios will be:

Producer James Goss lets us know what we can expect from the world of Torchwood in 2019, "Jack and Ianto discover domestic bliss, we've Gwen Cowper as you've never seen her before, Dr Owen Harper's in prison and there's something nasty out at sea. We'll meet the person who joined Torchwood at the same time as Tosh (whatever became of him?), Jack Harkness goes down a mine with a national treasure, and there's a town where you have to drink or die. Plus, which Torchwood character is a massive fan of opera?" We can't wait to find out!

My dream Torchwood audio: a timeskipping story that charts the fall of Harriet Jones and rise of Harold Saxon from the perspective of the Prime Minister from Children of Earth, covering the circumstances that saw him come to power. Then go through Children of Earth and cover whatever happened to the PM afterwards. I think RTD set up something really interesting with the procession of Prime Ministers under his run, and BFTW could tell a good story laser focused on that. I've always loved how the more childish DW zany Simm Master stuff naturally led to the sort of PM we see in Children of Earth and his sort of platform; it's an interesting development from Harriet Jones onwards.

The crystals and heavy industrial-looking metal sections just don’t work together at all. What really bugs me is how the TARDIS/Screwdriver and the Doctor's outfit don't have anything in common aesthetically at all.

Tom Baker had a really eclectic aesthetic too, but the detailed and richly textured costume against the stark mechanical mininmalism of the TARDIS interior accentuated his rebellious and improvisational nature while making him the visual focal point of the TARDIS scenes.

The new aesthetic seems to be the opposite of the Baker one-the machinery is richly detailed, while the Doctor has a comparitively minimal outfit. I can't help but imagine that it will make her seem flat and unrealistic against the inside of the TARDIS-and this TARDIS very well might end up looking fake too even with proper photography.

The new interior doesn't really seem to point to any obvious personality traits - although someone else said they think they're going for a "fae" aesthetic, which doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

Remove the obnoxious bendy crystal-metal "fingers" (that serve no visual or structural purpose) entirely, or replace them with organic upright crystals that hog less vertical space and preserve the aesthetic, and we'd be getting somewhere. The layout is begging for a coral-style open plan but those just suffocate it. Looks like a pain to get good angles on as well.

tactile quality of the surface of a work of art is what I'm referring to when I say you're using the word wrong. 10's costume does not have the tactile quality of coral, etc.

You are using texture as if you were referring to a work of music or literature, which is incorrect in this context.

it feels cold and lifeless. not because it lacks the lighting. through edits and other leaks, i can give a good guess at what it looks like all lit up. you could make it bright as anything in there, the warmest colours possible, and it would still feel weird and alien and detached and not quite like the home it's supposed to be for the doctor.

i like it when the show has the doctor seeming a bit more alien, but not in this way; i prefer the idea that the doctor appears human at first glance, but it becomes clear through their actions they're not. the interior almost makes it too obvious. plus, the console room is always at its best when it's comfy, and the new interior is not comfy. it looks like it could rip your skin off if you bumped into one of the crystals too hard

>i like it when the show has the doctor seeming a bit more alien, but not in this way; i prefer the idea that the doctor appears human at first glance, but it becomes clear through their actions they're not. the interior almost makes it too obvious

I think it adds to that, rather than detracts from it. She appears human at first, or almost human, and then you get inside her ship and it's freaky as fuck.

I agree that "comfy" TARDISes are good designs but it would be boring if that was the goal every single time. There's nothing wrong with trying something new and bold. It's like the coral design but more alien and less grim.

After trying to kill her off at the end of the christmas special the TARDIS is still having issues with the idea of a female Doctor, and the ugly mismatched interior is its way of making a statement. The hard brushed metal and strong shapes of the walls represent the powerful, dominant masculinity which the TARDIS sees as the natural order of things, whilst the tacky pink crystals forcing through the floor are a metaphor for its view of the feminist agenda being forced into the show. The series arc will be the TARDIS coming to terms with its own internalised misogyny, and in the final episode a new harmonious interior will be unveiled, full of rainbow motifs to match the Doctor’s costume.

I was at Starbucks with my friend doing some work on my computer with headphones in minding my own business. I thought I’d done enough work for a steady amount of time so I decided to make a meme for my group chat.

It was quite a cringey meme and probably wouldn’t make sense to anyone who isn’t part of my squad. There were these two girls sitting behind me and they started to get kinda whispery. I couldn’t hear what they were saying because of my headphones but I understood that they were being secretive.

Anyway, I was in the middle of making the meme when I saw the reflection of a camera flash on my screen, it was very brief and almost hid as if they had moved the camera. I assume they didn’t know flash was on. But anyway they started laughing and shushing each other and I just froze up. I pretended not to notice.

One of them ran to the bathroom with their face in their hands. I told my friend we should leave and very awkwardly packed up my computer and walked out of the cafe.

I can’t stop thinking about it and I wanna die. Cringiest thing that’s happened to me in a while. I've attached the meme for reference.

So I've finally finished the first story of DWInfinity.

It's complicated to talk about this.

The game is essentially a motion comic with voiceovers intercut with gameplay puzzle bits. Those are not candy crush at all by the way, gemstone mechanic is used to make up complicated puzzles of different kinds (some levels can be described as "checkers with daleks"). It's obviously aimed at casual audience but some puzzles are unironically challenging, devs even added the option to "skip level" so that casual players can progress through story. It's alright.

Why I actually bothered to follow this game is the story. The first one is written by George Mann who specialises in writing Time War stuff. This story definitely has a time war vibe, and it's surprisingly dark at times. It doesn't feel like a proper Briggs Finish story (which I thought it would be desu) but it's decent. Sound design and voice work are great.

What is more divisive IMO is animation in cutscenes and the whole "motion" aspect of comic. It's very simple and sometimes its straight up shite. It's pretty obvious that it's a very small indie studio who does this and there's no budget to do it properly, but it looks cheap. Very cheap.

This is not quite what I expected to be - it's story driven, but it's not visual novel level of storytelling.

I can see the effort devs put in this, sometimes it's sloppy and not very good-looking, but it's a real attempt at doing a good Dr Who game.

They market themselves as a "platform for telling stories", there's hope they'll find more ways to make gameplay and story bits integrate more smoothly. Maybe some of the bigger authors will eventually give it a try if it gets successfull enough (but seeing the level of excitement around it right now this feels like a total flop, hope im wrong)
