Waris Hussein, a director of a number of the old serials and an Indian says he wasn't racist. Carole Ann Ford and Verity Lambert (both Jewish) also agree with Waris that he wasn't racist. Also the guy who plays the black astronaut in The Tenth Planet had nothing but kind words for Hartnell in the DVD commentary.

If I recall correctly the only one to claim he was racist was the girl who played Polly I think and of course she's white.

And, of course, all the articles on the subject do not have their information cited. So it's very possible they're putting words in the mouths of others to slander Hartnell.

The First Doctor being a starting of as self-centered a slightly murderous was one of those early show things that fits in so good with the stuff that came later. It's always seemed very poignant to me that the Doctor never seems to go anywhere without a companion and remains heroic, while other Time Lords like The Master travel alone and remain in villainy.
