What upcoming shows in the near future are you excited about? I'm looking forward to the BBC's War of the Worlds adaptation, Good Omens, Luther, obviously Doctor Who (im a bit hesitant about Chibnall as showrunner, but looking forward to finding out what his take will be), and unironically I wanna check out that edgy grimdark version of Sabrina the teenage witch that Netflix is making. It might be garbage, but I used to watch Sabrina as a kid, so I'm still looking forward to what Netflix has done to it.

Watch The Venture Bros.. Completely different wheelhouse I know, but fuck it's great. Pantheon of characters that rival the MCU, lore, worldbuilding and David Bowie as a supervillian. The first season's animation is a bit shit, particularly the pilot but it gets better. Probably the most beautiful western animation modern on tv right now and the past 10 years.

I think there's been 2 seasons in that time. This seasons opening three parter was pretty great by the end of it and had a bit of a bombshell that everyone who's watch the show probably kinda expected. I think they maybe tieing up some loose strings now winding it down or starting to wrap it up. There's so much back story though they could easily spin it off into 3 or 4 different shows.

WOOOOOO! ITS NACHO WEEK!

Though technically not yet where I am. Ill talk a bit about the season first.

First things first: 2.5 was a time of a lot of experimentation and expanding for me. I interject a lot of character as a narrator and allow a few jokes at myself by making myself (as a narrator) seem vain. I did that on purpose knowing I'd be here doing commentary and seeming vain to you guys.

This is the first time ever I experimented with writing an arc, but to be fair its more a thematic arc than anything: each line of the doctor that goes into the three-ish doctors is a deconstruction on a question. For exile, each time she shows up the driving question of the story is "Can 'I' be The Doctor?" which is super important in the context of Exile. For the Shalka doctor I ask "Where should I be The Doctor", where and when are the right times, and is it important for the doctor to recognize boundaries and where he needs to step in? For the Nacho line the driving question is "why does the doctor do it?", which is thematically answered in the context of his lives different ways and by different authors!

And so knowing I wanted to do an arc for the first time and knowing that i had a lot of building to do, I did what anyone who's as lazy as me would do, I welded a bunch of past stuff together to give myself legitimacy(hey, it works for shit trips as a concept…)

So to me, a lot of st1 and 2 stories are canon to this universe of stories-snoozefest, the st2 framing story, k-9 gets really goddamned buff, farewell to friends, my meta crisis 10 stories, and more. Some happened explicitly in the continuity of the stories being told, some are stuff that could be happening while my stuff is going on, some of it is canon via them being stories told in st2. Some of the gross-out stuff is the only stuff id strike out explicitly, but i do appreciate them for what they try to do. Besides, we have alt universe jumping doctors; as long as they're jumping to a new universe what's the harm?(senpaious last words…)

The original core of the stories was Stalemate, Time Trap, Threeish Doctors and Giants(in that order) and for the clearest indication of my intent with the arc as a concept those 4 stories side by side are the clearest indication. The original intent was to be as kind to neo and imm(i didnt know who'd be arranging when i started writing). So I assumed the stories would be separated; so to have a crossover event with book club I planned around that: if you missed the first story you could go into the crossover from the second story with the shalka doctor and follow him into it; if you missed both I introduced a new doctor to follow into it and you could be introduced and keep pace! I wanted to make this as easy for /who/ as possible because I didnt know how many of you would be reading along and investing time. The only one that you can't read first is Giants, and that was originally the finale as a way of subverting the "high stakes, high adventure!" Trope of nuwho. Here I chose small, personal drama as an ending in giants because i wanted to make an impact with you all.

And the important thing to remember is those 4 stories were written as a group while we were still a 4chan general. On the flip side of things the other stories(morph's revolution games, imm's story and the others) all got written as we were trying to find our identity outside of 4chan between discord and mcgannchan.

So in the surrounding stories things get more experimental; the theming is still there, albeit more unintentionally, as I never planned for the rest of it to be a season; but that said ive come to terms and now love it(THANK YOU NEO!) . So the style gets super wonky- a porn doctor gets a real life historical story with a 4thwall breaking hard scifi explanation(a la before the flood), a character from 80s who gets a new interpretation to give her new meaning, and after years of bitching about the how much I hate the ever loving piss out of Rise of the Cybermen I decided to show how it's fucking done(which is an idea i had back in july last year right before fuckin moffat of all people one upped me and ALSO showed Rise how it's fucking done). But strangely the themes still fit and the ideas still work, so I love that with 9 stories Ive written Doctor Who the way I would(smirking, sarcastic, and occasionally depressing the ever loving shit out of you)

And I want to thank /who/ for the opportunity to do so. Thanks all! Ill wake up tomorrow and try to talk about Course Correction and why a lesbian porn star with a foot fetish is explaining einstein to you all.

chibs is big on representation, but he does it in a subtle way where it's never artificially brought up.

In the entirety of broadchurch I don't think there's a single male in a position of higher authority, but it's never brought to your attention with any condescending to men or 'girl power' message. I would say that it's a feminist show done right.

Alice Morgan as a character is kinda similar to Missy, and her relationship with Luther reminds me of the Doctor / Master relationship. Especially when Luther's conscience gets people killed, or when Alice trys to put him into those tricky situations.

Just finished TWD S4E1

I think it's the first time since S1 I've legitimately cared about the story. S2 was clem against a cast of fuckups who left the child to be the adult in the room, and S3 threw you into senpaiily drama that I wanted no part of. I like the parallels they're drawing between lee/clem and clem/AJ - but that does make me cautious of what they might be planning for clem's fate

I've always hated AJ as a concept but now that he's an actual character I like how he's being handled. It's interesting seeing a kid who only knows of the zombie times, brought up to act like an adult from the start but still having some childhood immaturity. It'll be really interesting to see where they go with it next considering that AJ just shot marlon in the head in my playthrough, right after I had defused the conflict.

It feels like the purpose of the high school setting is to give clem a harem so you pick her endgame

Based on first episodes I would say 1 > 4 > 2 > 3

**It's a weird position to be in. On one hand, Marlon is absolutely FUCKED for choice - if he doesn't go through with the only option he really can take (selling the two sisters into potential sex-slavery/rape/ cannibalization) all of them will die. On the other, he's only postponing the inevitable because once the (potential) slavers leave they'll know they have a good thing going w/ the School so they'll be back.

Marlon 100% did the worst thing possible, but he literally has no other options available. He mentions that he wanted to plan a rescue but pussied out, so he mustn't have really cared enough about them that much. Even if you can get over the fact that Marlon is possibly selling these kids into slavery, you can't deny that he murdered Brody in cold blood. He regretted it instantly afterwards, but it still doesn't get over the fact that he murdered someone. Brody's just as bad as Marlon because she knew about it all and didn't say anything for a year. The fact that she spilled the beans before dying doesn't redeem her at all IMO**.

lady dynamite is criminally underrated and doesn't get anywhere near as much appreciation as it deserves

the premise of a semiautobiographical comedy about a woman with bipolar trying to recover from a mental breakdown is too uncomfortable to appeal to the normie masses but mitch hurwitz and pam brady do a really good job of mixing batshit insanity with more serious themes

it's a shame netflix don't want to make any more but it also works neatly as a two season story so there are much worse fates it could have had

All of 30 Rock is pretty good, it waxes and wanes but it's not like it starts bad and gets good or starts good and gets bad, it goes up and down through the years but overall is more consistent than something like the (US) Office or Community. It's more like the Simpsons than anything else imo, just an absolute machine of how many jokes can be fitted into a minute. The last season was really nice which always makes you remember a show fondly. Kimmy is very similar but I feel like Kimmy's cast is kind of cramped, not many characters, the actors are all good though.

-Course Correction

Not many people realize this, but the title is a meta-reference. When you get to the three-ish doctors the third one claims to be a universe jumper, and so for that to happen it has to be established somewhere in their line.

In my original sketching we had the Nacho doctor here, but honestly it wasn't working. I needed to establish a companion for the 4th wall sketch, establish a major continuity point for the arc AND tell a decent story, none of which was working right.

The first solution came as I heard Imm was dropping doing a Diamond Doc story. I thought, "well that kind of wrenches people remembering her easily" so I spent an hour thinking about what I'd do if I sketched out her own story. Nothing came out of that, and i started reworking on this before it came to me.

Side note: this one establishes that other st stories are canon, starting with the framing story from st2 being referenced.

The einstein theory came to me because I went to university at a school with a prestigious engineering program and a lot of my friends were engineers who were(sometimes annoyingly) obsessed with science. Its one of those things that just filters into your head as people put up sheets of paper on the walls and do formulas and talk about science history in the common area of your dorm. And so what I wanted to do was portray skin diamond's doctor with a lot of innate intelligence, and drawing on that culture helped me interpret how to give her that.

And so to write this I had to go back and read Imm's first story, working out details, asking the man himself("how's she do under stress" i asked him, and he said something like "she gets overwhelmed and frustrated" so that was big to establish that I went with it twice). So having her in the main Doctor slot fixed so many problems-established relationship, more open timeline. But could it be taken seriously, having a porn star explain theoretical physics to Nilso, for example?

Id like to think so. Key to that is Immigrant's establishment that Diamond still has Clara's picture up. With that being the case I was free to establish references to before the flood and sponge that credibility.

But once that was applied and I had my scifi twist in place it ironically made things even harder- now I needed a plot! And that was agonizingly slow: if im telling parallel universes do I tell the whole story from a 1 side-rewind- other side approach? Nah that would be too long. So do I chop it up, tell events concurrently? That seemed harder. Eventually I decided to focus on the events themselves and the character's reactions to them, which is why patty gets treated nicely and the doctor doesnt get approached by anyone on their own.

The actual plot ended up being 2 or 3 things that just didnt work: killing franz ferdinand, 9/11 being stopped-wew lad, and finally a school burning down-that one required a stupid amount of coincidences. i finally just tvtropes'd "disaster dominos" to see if i could get a real life example to make it seem more organic. Surprise, I went with one of the actual examples-a russian plane crash caused by children. Before I got there I actually put the story down while getting frustrated and wrote a whole first draft of Train of Thought in between the meta section and actually writing the plot!

I drafted that, and then key to it was Imm and Morphant's contributions-a rough sketch on who Morph was making the Swinton doctor into made her a cameo here, Immigrant giving pointers on who he pictured Diamond was and what her arc should be informed me a little more of her character and gave it a sense of an arc that Imm will eventually write.

The mind universe was to give the Diamond Doc a place to think with unlimited time in a crisis, that helped the character have an unlimited amount of time to think and make it so that I had a visual representation of why she got overwhelmed. Key to that was turning knowledge into sensations: touch, sight, sound… And so when she truly sees no way out of it the entire universe crunches back into a big bang state, analogous to that scene in Inside Out where they can't get out the lightbulb.

I think it's key to remember your audience in these scenarios:I wanted to respect the intelligence of /who/ because this was the story of a doctor from shit trips 1. The first story, infact! That meant I was more apt to drop references and be less inclined to dumb down ideas. I truly hope anyone who reads it enjoys the ride, it was a lot of fun to write once I knew where the course was going!

-Stalemate Commentary

This VERY nearly was a completely different story. I had two different stories going down the barrel where this could come out, and ended up writing a full page of both before I made my decision. What it came down to was the decision to make the Three-ish Doctors. I will say that in my head, the other story sounds like a heck of a good one, there's just nowhere to go from it:

It would have been a series of events where Exile wakes up to find the console has been destroyed. She goes through and pieces it together, only for the tardis console to explode in her face and reset. She would keep doing this time and again until she got to the end where- SURPRISE! she would realize upon opening the tardis door that she dematerialized herself and now is basically dead and trapped inside her tardis-like a Heaven Sent where the Doctor loses.

The thing is Exile is depressing as heck of an ending-she owns up and reclaims her identity only to get punished! That isn't right. But in my story she's made peace with that because she's accepted she's the doctor, she has self-fulfillment to tide herself over for now!

Much like I did to Diamond I was determined to tell proper doctor who by smoothing out the edges without completely getting rid of the funny quirks. Much the same as Miyazaki did to Lupin the 3rd in Castle of Cagliostro(one of my favorite movies of all time. Shut up.) She still drinks and gets bossy, but now that she doesn't have to hide herself I just didnt see the point of getting her so totally wasted that she'd be vomiting everywhere: after all, best behavior she's on a real adventure now!

A lot of the thought that went into the plot here is trying to make the bigger idea of Exile's themes work in an askew way that benefits the protagonist: there's no monster or enemy here, and instead we're focusing on why; "The Doctor" as a legend or hero or spanner in the works isn't a thing in this universe to believe in since we're in a pre-third doctor incarnation, so why should people believe in her and her fighting monsters? For what its worth, its an important question to the validity of 2's response in The War Games that there IS a CIA and a Matrix to tell them where to step in in later continuity, so why does The Doctor need to be the one who fights them?

The answer is in the three-ish doctors, and that's because the Doctor's mind is unlike that of other time lords.

You'll notice I heavily relied on the idea that people drink to give themselves courage as a trope. I also do that sometimes so it was like a visual cue that something heavy or plot relevant was going to happen.

You'll forgive me for rushing the ending a bit, but wandering around an empty CIA hq is dull as fuck, so I had no intention of retreading the skaro scene.

Also: Im picturing Tennant doing his scottish "scrooge mcduck" voice here instead of his usual tennant voice. Ah woul'a writ eh da whey but ah dun think yeed ha got wha ah was sayin' lahdee.

One last quick note:the ending song changed in every draft of this story. In draft 1 it was Champagne Supernova to contrast Blur vs. Oasis, but then decided she shouldnt switch bands so I went with under the westway because I wanted a later blur song before settling on Falling from Graham Coxon because under the westway is actually sad as fuck and not really fitting the hopeful theme of the end of the story. Still a great song.

I'm also really proud of that stinger at the end of the story. It makes the smaller one that comes next mean so much more because of building ontop of it. Cheers, /who/

Executive Producer and one of the founding members of Briggs Finish, Nicholas Briggs told us about this exciting new release: “The Legacy of Time will probably go down in Briggs Finish history as our biggest, most exciting production, ever! Celebrating 20 years of Doctor Who at Briggs Finish, it expertly pulls together all the strands from our many and varied Doctor Who ranges.

“This is down to the brilliance of script editor Matt Fitton and producer David Richardson. They epitomise the creative strength, organisational expertise and leadership of the company. Quite simply, this is going to blow people’s minds! It’s got everything!”

“How do you celebrate 20 years of Doctor Who at Briggs Finish?” questions the producer assigned this epic task, David Richardson. “How do you celebrate something that has meant so much to all of us who work here – the friendships, the freedom to be creative, the glory that is Doctor Who itself? That was the challenge facing myself and Matt Fitton, but once I’d had an idea for what this six-hour epic would be about (spoilers!) it was then relatively easy to start assembling the huge team of characters and actors who would take us on the journey.

That and they're talking about the overall tone Chibbers wants, which sounds to me like a return to RTD-populism but with all the dark, witty bits that made it popular in the first place replaced with completely sincere schmaltz.

Sandifer's latest takedown of Briggs Finish:

http://www.eruditorumpress.com/blog/you-were-expecting-someone-else-unit-assembled/

I quibble with a few of the specifics (saying BF has fallen prey to "burnt out mediocrities of the wilderness years" doesn't square with the actual reality that it is post-wilderness hacks who write the absurd amount of hundreds of hours of content, not the few remaining wilderness holdouts like Briggs) and not addressing how BF have handled spinning-off spin-offs themselves, but I agree with the thrust of the entry. I'd go further on the moral point even. N8 will be happy with the last paragraph.

Basically the ruling party in Australia randomly gave around half a billion dollars to a dubious organisation (headed by a fossil fuel CEO) of literally 6 fulltime people, with 0 tender process and said organisation literally having 0 plans for how to utilise the money. This isn't a case of the government saying "we have ~400million dollars, everyone make your case for how you'd use this to save the reef", then the government giving it to the nonprofit full of ex big money types that pollies can comfily retire into after their careers and enjoy the payout, no, it's naked corruption in comparison to regular corruption, because the government literally just gave nearly half a billion in taxpayer dollars away without folks like the CSIRO who might actually use it for the stated purpose of the reef even getting a look in. Turnbull's been involved in plenty of corruption shit like this before (including the fucking Panama Papers), but this was so naked and obvious that it seemed to cross a line for the MSM at least.

this is a stupid argument. conservatives love to point out that in the past we had 'different' (i.e. lower) moral standards. therefore, they say, we have to cut the past a little slack when it comes to oppression. however any historian will tell you that people of the past were just as wise as modern people. therefore there was no excuse for slavery in the 1700s, segregation in the 1960s, or creating casually racist media in the 1970s. we could've - and should've - done better. these things have always been wrong.

Talons isn't that good of a story and I'm not gonna defend its terrible mishandlings at all. Greel's an interesting villain but he'd have been better served in another story. Masquerading as a god while being from the future is a thing that's done quite often in Who and it's done relatively well in ToWC. Jago and Litefoot are pretty neat (although it beggars belief as to why they came back in audios). Quite a few of the sets are gorgeous, especially the Dragon Laser Cannon (Zygmariser or something similar) set. It's also weird that they stretched to casting Asian actors for the minor villains but they couldn't cast an Asian actor for Li H'sen Chang, one of the more important characters in the story.

Definitely Robert Holmes' worst hour other than The Space Pirates and The Power of Kroll.
